PREZ SEZ
Hello GMC Truck Chapter Members!
I hope everyone is surviving this crazy
weather that has been moving across
the nation? I know I am ready for
Spring! I will remind everyone of the
POCI and GTOAA co-vention coming
up in July it will be here soon! Hopefully we will get a good showing of
GMC trucks.
Here in Oklahoma our local car club
has already started their car show season by participating in the Darryl Starbird Hot Rod Custom Car Show, we
had nine cars from the club. We usually do the new auto show in March and
the club itself will be hosting the BOP
challenge at the local race track and we
have a car show at the same time. So
we are busy bunch to say the least.
Thanks to Paul for his hard work and
Ron for keeping us straight with the
finances, speaking of remember those
dues I myself need to send Ron some
money! This helps our chapter with the
newsletter expenses etc. I had a few
new people join recently and we welcome them to our chapter hope to see
them this summer at the convention.
Get those GMC trucks ready and show
them off whenever you get a chance!
Take care!
David Bailey,
GTC Prez.
If you are out at any shows please
please get some pictures and share

Subject: 90-91 GMC 454SS pickup?
Good morning Paul,
I’m going back to a short wide box pickup and have been looking at Chev 454 SS
trucks. Someone here in Maui has what they call a 1990 454 SS step side GMC
for sale. I was not aware that GMC made 454s in short box 1/2 ton size. Is it true?
At the right price I could buy and find a short wide box to fight and would be
pleased to have a GMC truck. Have owned two prior GMC 1/2 tons. (Not 454s).
Can you advise please? It’s great to see you have a GMC Truck Chapter--I will
join if I can find or create 454 SS.
L David, Maui, HI
From the “North American Truck Club” website, for 1990-1993 Chevrolet:
“The 1990 Chevrolet 454SS is a high performance full size pickup that mated the
C1500 standard two wheel drive cab with an absolutely killer 454ci 7.4 liter, eight
cylinder engine(V-8), the 3 speed automatic transmission and a 3.73 rear axle ratio helped thrust the 454 beast under the hood, the engine produced a maximum of
230hp, 385 foot pounds of torque, All this power was pushed out to Goodyear tires
on Special 454SS rims. The interior comes equipped with a special plush Garnet
Red cloth interior and high-back reclining sport bucket seats with a Center Console. Only available in Onyx Black.”

Trans Am Traveler
To me, it doesn’t get much better than
when Pontiac and GMC Trucks come
together... 30s panel trucks, Pontiac
V8s in the late 50s GMC pickups, and
how cool is this - in the 1970s, there
was a special GMC Motorhome that
was commissioned to visit racing
events and encourage Pontiac Trans
Am owners to come together, spread
their Firebird wings have a great time!
I have been researching this and plan to share the results with the GMC Truck
Chapter. Let’s get started! On page 9, the history of the “Trans Am Territory” is
from Michael Lamm’s book “The Fabulous Firebird”, 3rd printing, 1998.

The History Behind
“Trans Am
Territory”
Trans Am enthusiasts within Pontiac Motor Division had wanted for some time
to establish special areas near race courses where Firebird owners could park
their cars and socialize. Such meeting grounds had already been set aside at various tracks for other makes of cars: e.g. Corvette Corals, Porsche Parks, Datsun
Z Zones etc.
GM’s then design vice president William L. Mitchell, in talking to “Mr. Trans
Am” John Schinella in 1975, suggested setting up a “Trans Am Teepee” along
the lines of Corvette Corals. Schinella jumped at the opportunity.
Schinella’s assistant designer and fellow T/A enthusiast, Bill Davis, came up
with the name Trans Am Territory. Schinella passed the idea along to Pontiac
general Manager Alex Mair, who felt immediately that a Trans Am Territory program was just what Pontiac needed. Pontiac public relations chief Stan Richards
appointed Jill Rogers to work out the details in conjunction with John Schinella
On June 5-6, 1976, Schinella, Rogers and Dick Henderson launched the first
Trans Am Territory at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisc. This SCCA event
marked part of Pontiac’s 50th anniversary celebration, and the Sports Car Club
of America designated a black-and-gold 1976 Limited Edition Trans Am its official car for the 10-race 1976 Trans American Championship series.
Subsequently, Pontiac acquired a GMC motor home - called the Trans Am Traveler - and soon established Trans Am Territories not only at Road America but
also at Watkins Glen, Mosport, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, Michigan International,
Laguna Seca, Riverside and Pocono Raceways. Each became a greater success
than the one before, sometimes with a many as 325 Trans Ams and other Firebirds in attendance.
Schinella rarely missed one of these events, and Rogers never did. Other regular
visitors included Stu Schuster, Russ Dunbar, Wade Greenisen Jr. and George T.
Reganis. The Type K, Silverbird, Banshee III and various special Firebirds were
usually displayed in roped-off areas. Local Trans Am clubs turned out en masse.
Firebird owners could usually take at least a parade lap around the track.
