07 MONDAY 23 MARCH 2015 SPORTS DAY 2015 On Friday 6 March we held our annual Sports Day. It was significant this year as we were also celebrating our schools 50th Anniversary. To acknowledge this, it was decided to give our colour houses their original names – after famous poets and authors: Wright (Red), Gilmore (Yellow), Lawson (Blue) & Thiele (Green). We also awarded the new “Dean Stringer 33,914 House Shield” to the winning house in honour of Dean’s contribution to Modbury High School 28,928 and the community. WEEKLY ATTENDANCE FIGURE Total Possible Classes Total Attendance 85.30% % Attendance 90.56% % Attendance to Date for Year The day started smoothly at 7.30am with lots of colour and excitement. Students made the Our Target - at least 93% day as colourful and exciting as possible. This year it was obvious there were many more different outfits and costumes which added to the fun and spirit of the day. The SRC again supported this by awarding prizes to the best costumes at each year level and for staff. Our traditional opening ceremony, featured the popular “Modbury Flame Relay” with the Year 12 House Captains carrying an Olympic style torch and the symbolic lighting of the cauldron by last year’s winners, Wright. • • • • • • Sports Day 2015 Home Group Championship Year Level Championship House Championship Fun Run 2015 Australian Mathematics Competition Jai and Nicole, captains of last year’s winners, Wright, light the cauldron COMING EVENTS 25 Mar Vista Athletics 3 Apr Good Friday 6 Apr Easter Monday 10 Apr End Term 1 2:35pm Dismissal Term 2 Begins 27 Apr The positive feel from the Opening Ceremony continued throughout the day. There was a great atmosphere with staff, students and parents working together, enjoying a fun and relaxed event. The ideal weather also made the day enjoyable. The feeling of shared energy with an air of competition provided proof of the benefits of days like this. Whilst all who took part can be viewed as winners, special congratulations go to the classes and individuals who won their respective competitions and also Thiele house, which won on the day. After being narrowly beaten by Wright last year, they put together a superb team effort to eventually come out in front in a very even, closely fought contest. This year we not only presented Thiele house with the winning cup, but also awarded the new Dean Stringer Shield which hopefully should last for the next 50 years. We are sending a team to represent us in the Vista Athletics Carnival, which is being held this Wednesday and the State Graded titles in Week 11. We look forward to reporting our successes in those events soon. Finally, a special thank you to all who were involved in helping to make Sports Day a huge success. The support of all sections of the school community - students, parents and staff was fantastic. Believed to be one of the largest annual events on the Australian education calendar, the AMC was the first competition of its kind in Australia and is now one of the largest of its type in the world. More than 40 countries participate each year. The competition aims to be accessible to all students from Years 3 to 12, not just the mathematically gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed to be fun for the student. The categories for MHS students are Junior (Year 8), Intermediate (Years 9 & 10) and Senior (Years 11 & 12) divisions. Time allowed is 75 minutes. All students receive a Certificate of Participation and may qualify to receive a Certificate of High Distinction, Distinction or Credit. This year, the competition will be held on Thursday 30 July, 2015. As a Mathematics faculty, we are encouraging all students, particularly those in advanced classes, to enter the competition. If your child is interested, they can collect a consent form from their Maths teacher and pay the entry fee ($5.45 exc GST) to the Finance Office by Thursday 2 April, 2015. If you require any further information, please contact me at the school.
