The 4th Annual High Country Charity Golf Outing benefitting the “Wounded Warrior
Project” was a great success and achieved the highest amount of money raised in northern
Arizona for the Wounded Warrior Project. The festivities were kicked off on Friday night,
August 8th at High Country Home & Garden with live music by the band, Thomas Oliver
and Hot Foot. There were over 300+ Munds Park community members who came and
showed their support in the fundraising event. A BIG THANK YOU to the community who
provided enormous amounts of food and generously donated items for the Raffle and Silent
Auction. A lucky raffle ticket holder won a big screen T.V.!
On Saturday, August 9th the golf tournament was held and again, a community effort
made for a wonderful day of golf, food, refreshments and music. A $12,000 trip was won by
one of the lucky golfers.
Moose Walsh was overwhelmed with pride and appreciation said, “To all the sponsors,
golfers, volunteers and supporters who participated in this years golf outing on August 9th in
Munds Park, AZ give yourself a standing ovation because the final number is in. I am proud
to announce that we raised $70,500 and it is being sent to the Wounded Warrior Project
today. I am humbled and overjoyed by the generosity of so many people coming together to
help the men and women of our military.”

Foodie's Paradise on Old Route 66

What's all the foodie buzz about the Turquoise Room
Restaurant on old Route 66 in Winslow, Arizona?
Arizona Highways, the New York Times, and the
Seasonal Chef are applauding the success of Chef John Sharpe in the remote high desert of
Northern Arizona. One of my friends and her husband recently traveled over 100 miles to
celebrate her 35th wedding anniversary there. Retired folk groups from local churches are
filling vans with patrons on a pilgrimage to the Turquoise Room.
They are all raving about the food, service and
ambiance. I shouldn't be surprised about all the accolades
when I look at Chef Sharpe's resume.
John Sharpe and his wife Patricia opened the
Turquoise Room in fall 2000 after owning four restaurants and a catering business in southern California for
many years. His career began in England as an apprentice
chef in a five-star hotel. Graduating from the Westminster
Hotel School, he moved to Switzerland, where he worked
and studied for three more years. Sharpe spent another
two years cooking in other European countries before
moving to Los Angeles in the mid 1970s.

A contributing and defining part of his latest restaurant
in Winslow is the Churro lamb cassoulet. Churro lamb is
totally and completely unique to the Northern Arizona high desert. From a foodie point of
view, savoring Churro lamb in the southwest is tantamount to experiencing Brest chicken in
Brest, France. The meat expresses the soil, climate, culture of the Navajo region for which
Churro was bred.
Other place-based items on the menu include certified Angus Choice Prime Rib Roast au
jus (“Best end-cut I’ve had in years,” proclaims one well-heeled traveler), traditional Hopi
Piki bread and elk medallions.

foods that are both important food sources and also
important to the ritual and spiritual and symbolic
lives of the Native Americans of the region. “I’m
not limited anymore to simply southwest cuisine... I
try to be a bit more local-foods focused with the
restaurant now,” reveals Chef Sharpe. As a member
of Chef’s Collaborative he works to encourage local
growers to provide the restaurant with sustainablygrown foods of all kinds.

healthy, sustainable food service businesses. Chef Sharpe is also involved with Slow Food
USA which envisions a future food system that is based on
the principles of high quality and taste, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
In keeping with those values, Chef Sharpe buys Churro
lamb from nearby Navajo herders, traditional Piki corn
bread from Hopi pueblo women, and goat cheese from
local farmers. Squash blossoms come from Phoenix and
there’s “halibut caught by Native Americans from Alaska
in the kitchen now,” said Chef Sharpe when I was there.

R.I.P. CAREY WHITE
I had some bad news last week… a friend and former volunteer passed away unexpectedly and
much too early. Carey White was the Pastor at Munds Park Community Church, a volunteer firefighter/EMT and a friend. He helped my mother through her fight with cancer, even visiting her when she
went to Phoenix. He stopped by to see my mother the day after she died, he had tears in his eyes
when I told him. He had planned to get there a couple of days earlier but life had gotten in his way. I
hope I made him understand how much his visits had meant to my mother.
Carey went out of his way to help the community and its residents during any type of family emergency. When a death occurred, he often stayed with spouses until family could make the 2-3 hour
drive up the hill. He was always at the hospital visiting his parishioners and any other Pinewood residents who might be in the hospital. I don’t remember the exact years he was part of our department
and community, but he was a truly caring and giving man as long as I knew him.
He always had a smile and a hardy laugh. He was “harassed” by the female department members
during training. He became our “training mannequin” and we often swung him upside down in the
Evac-U-Splint, made him blush when he had to strap Gina onto the backboard and when someone
unobtrusively stuck a foam nozzle down the back of his turnouts. He took this all with a smile, a
laugh and a sense of humor. He only asked that we not use the Lord’s name in vain… a tall order for
some of us, but we tried.
Back in the day…. As today, our department was filled with caring, dedicated and, at that time,
well trained volunteers. Carey was one of them. I missed him when he left Munds Park, and I miss
him now that he has gone home to the Lord he loved and in whose image he existed.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS…. What ever happened to them? I remember when we used to sit quietly
by the radio every morning at 8 a.m. waiting for the trivia question of the day on KOLT radio I think
it was. Between all of us, we were pretty good at trivia. We got through more often than not, in fact,
the DJ’s began to recognize my voice and call me by name. Pete told them that we were NACFUI
(nac-fu-e) Northern Arizona Center for Useless Information. We prided ourselves on that name. I got
through on a question of what groups of animals were called… I got it right… They asked me how I
knew and I told them I had the list in my file cabinet. Pete used it in his EMT class. The first time I
ever got through on the trivia line was the Monday before my Paramedic written test and I was sitting
home in my pajamas with my medical dictionary on my lap. The question was related to a type of
phobia which were all listed in the back of the medical dictionary. I am willing to bet I was the only
person sitting with a medical dictionary on their lap next to a phone! I won a tape of Faith Hill. The
DJ, who happened to live out here, brought it to me at the fire station.

The first fall I was here, when the roads were still dirt, we had a party in a cul-de-sac that Brad
lived on. We all brought food and beverages and we built a huge bon fire in the middle of the cul-desac. The next year they paved the roads so we had to take the “Flatlanders” party outside the Park. We
moved it a couple times and finally settled on the opening on the right about one mile out on FS 240.
It was close enough that everyone could come out for food and we still were able to respond quickly
to emergency calls. We had snow one year and had to move it into Bill and Gina’s garage. One year
we all (at least those not on duty) decided to make it an overnight camp out. I slept in the back of my
car in a sleeping bag, some had tents, some had campers and one even slept on a boat. One year we
had Uncle George and his little green tractor dig a hole and we buried a pig and turkeys! Most of the
time we had brats, hot dogs, and hamburgers with all the side dishes and fixings. The parties started at
11 a.m. and went to 2 and 3 a.m. but they got much shorter as we got older. Like 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Brad always took care of fire wood for the bon fires and we had huge bon fires. Most of the time
several of us sat around until it went out and covered it with dirt. But one year it was so big we had to
go back and get a fire truck to put it out. There was a lot of friendship, comraderie and just plain fun.
Not to say the new generation isn’t fun, we just all have different tastes and we’re in a different
world.
But the good old days are fond memories!

The Quick Cook
Who Doesn’t Like Dessert?

You know how it is. You’re tired, busy. You
throw something together for dinner that is
quite adequate.
But you don’t like to do adequate, so step up
your game with an array of single serving
dessert options that took almost no time to do
but look as if you run a five-star restaurant.
(Not really. I made that last part up. But an
array of dessert options will improve your diners’ memory of dinner.) Thus, Quick Cook
Tip #9:

Wow ‘em with dessert if dinner is ordinary.
Okay, sounds good right? But three dessert
options? Seriously?
Yep! People like options. Makes them think
they’re at a fine eatery. And these are easypeasy. All it takes is a little prep, and you’re
good to go. Put them on a tray or buffet table
and let people choose one or more.
And these desserts are soooo good, I am
including them in an upcoming culinary mystery book I’ve tentatively titled it Devil’s
Food Wake (a witch story with the murder of
a coven member). That should be a good book
for dessert recipes.
Now who doesn’t like dessert? My husband is
mad for chocolate. Even more than my
women friends, so I make lots of chocolate
desserts. Given how hot summer can be, even
in Munds Park, I especially appreciate
desserts that don’t heat up the kitchen.
Here are three for you! The first uses avocados as the base for pudding. Weird? Maybe,
but it is tasty! The second is a one-minute
microwave cake that is too easy! And the third
is a dessert that is actually good for you,
almost a health food.

You know me, I’m not much on pre-packaged
food stuffs, but I have made an exception for
this too-easy microwave cake recipe for when
I need a dessert in a minute--literally a minute.
I also do sometimes make my own cake mixes
for microwave cake, just so you know. But for
quicker and easier, try:
One-Minute Chocolate Microwave Cake
1 box Angel Food Cake Mix
1 box chocolate cake mix
Thoroughly combine the two cake mixes and
store in a gallon zipper plastic bag.
To make a single serving:
5 heaping tablespoons cake mixture
3 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon mini-chocolate chips
1 teaspoon finely chopped nuts
In a 12-ounce mug, thoroughly mix cake mixture with water. Stir in chocolate chips and
nuts.
Microwave on high for one minute. Let sit for
five minutes.
Serve as is or top with more mini-chocolate
chips, ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh
berries.
Eat from the cup or up-end onto a plate by
running a table knife around the cake edge.
The final recipe one has made the Internet
rounds, so you might have seen it. No real
recipe, but simple to replicate:
Cut banana into four equal sections crosswise.
Beat until smooth. Refrigerate in mixing bowl
or individual dishes for an hour.
Wrap in foil and freeze for a 3-5 hours until
solid.
Imagine what else you could put in to modify
the basic recipe. I’m going to use Greek
Honey Yogurt next time instead of the cocoa
powder. I’ll leave off the caramel and sea salt
but add chopped pistachios (since it will be
greenish). It will serve more people and

1 very ripe banana
Mini-chocolate chips (maybe 1/2 cup)
Finely chopped nuts (maybe 1/2 cup)
Salted Caramel Dark Chocolate Avocado
Pudding (4-6 servings)
3 ripe avocados, in food processor
1/2 cup honey
6 tablespoons dark chocolate cocoa powder
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 tablespoon caramel syrup per serving
Sea salt to taste
Put into serving dishes (if not already), top
with caramel and sprinkle with sea salt.

chosen from a candidate field of six finalists.
“Chuck is a very persistent and focused man,” said Dick Drinen, President of the
PPOA Board. “In his good natured way, he doesn’t let road blocks stop him from
achieving the ultimate goal,” added Drinen, “Which is a major reason why we
were successful in implementing the siren safety program. He found many innovative ways to make the installation happen in a reasonable and cost effective
manner,” commented Drinen.

company that manufactures the siren
located above the Pinewood Fire Station
along with the Fire Chief to install the
safety device. He overcame one road
block after another to make the multiyear process become a reality. The siren
effectively notifies Munds Park residents of possible lightning danger as well as
other possible emergency scenarios including threat of fire or attack. The safety
device was installed in 2012 replacing an antiquated system that was difficult to
hear.
Lightning caused 23 deaths nationwide in 2013 with Arizona and Florida having

the raising of funds and reducing of costs associated with the program, Chuck
also served in a variety of ways for the benefit of the community. He was a
very active member of the PPOA Board for ten years and served as the
Communications Chair, initiating the “Happenings Column.” He was Roster
Chair and also participated in Community Relations, Park and Rec and the
Environment Committees. Chuck was instrumental in the initiation of the Park
Bench seating that is placed all along Pinewood Blvd. for the use of the local
community. Chuck involved himself in a lot of the smaller details that others
were not interested in but the community benefits from.
Chuck Steen has been a Captain in the Neighborhood Watch Program for Unit
10 A for several years. He was instrumental in the development of the Sanitary
District Advisory Committee who was responsible for the recruitment and
selection of Jim Wilson, our current sanitary district manager. Chuck even
developed the employment contract pertinent to Jim’s hiring. He has owned
property here with his lovely wife, Dee, since 1979, originally living on Wildcat
off Mustang until building his log cabin dream home “On Golden Pond.” The
Steen’s hosted the PPOA annual year-end party for nine years before retiring
from the PPOA board a few years ago. Dee and Chuck have been married for
44 years and have two children and two grand-children with another one on
the way expected in September. Chuck founded a mini-storage business back
in 1977 when only twenty of them existed. He enjoys wood-working and making fine craftsman furniture and riding ATV’s with friends in the surrounding
forest near Munds Park.

Park have brought lightning deaths to the lowest level ever in 2013. The high
point of lightning deaths occurred in 1943 with 432 deaths nationwide. Arizona
has always been one of the highest lightning strike areas in the country.
The idea of getting struck by lightning has always been equated to something
rare and unlikely, but records show dying from a strike is more common than
from other natural phenomena. Since records began in 1940, more than 9,200
people have been killed in the U.S. by lightning. This compares to around 7,400
killed by tornadoes, 7,500 killed by floods and 3,300 killedby hurricanes.
The individuals selected to receive the PPOA Citizenship Award receive a gift
certificate for $100 from the organization in recognition of their efforts. More
importantly, the award winners, who represent the best in volunteerism, both
civic and philanthropic, are recognized by their peers and constituents as setting an example and tone for inclusiveness, helpfulness and caring for others.
These leaders give back to the community in a kind, generous and selfless
manner…without an agenda and for long periods of time. Chuck Steen is a
true example of this kind of leader and is missed by those he shared time and
talents with on the Pinewood Property Owners Association Board.

decade, I know the features and benefits of
Pinewood whether you’re buying or selling.”
We single people have to help each other, especially when one of us is sick
or has surgery. A friend of mine had a gastric bypass last week. That’s an elective
surgery, but she felt it was necessary and I supported her. She has diabetes, high
blood pressure and bad sleep apnea. She did a sleep study earlier this year and they
stopped it because she stopped breathing fifty-six times in one hour! She’s claustrophobic and couldn’t get used to the mask of the breathing machine. I checked on
her every morning from February until I moved up to Munds Park in May. We usually read the paper together and have tea and coffee. If she didn’t call me, I was
worried she had expired from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.) Many peo-

it for health, not her looks.
Her son, among others, couldn’t figure out why she was taking such drastic
means. Why couldn’t she just lose weight on her own?
She’d tried: twenty years of seeing a fat doctor and getting weekly B12
shots, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. You name it, she, tried it. The weight
always came back. She calls her weight “super glue fat” because it refuses to let go.

The month leading up to her surgery she gained fourteen pounds by simply
not monitoring what she ate. She had to go on a liquid diet the week before surgery
and lost five pounds.

I took her to the hospital early and the surgery went well. All of this doctor’s patients go to ICU after recovery. I thought the care would be outstanding but
I was wrong. I was the one who disconnected her many attachments and accompanied her on her mandatory hourly walks. I’m sure if you’ve had a loved one seriously ill in the hospital in the last ten years, you know that a friend or family member needs to be there to make sure care is delivered.
My friend looked healthy right after her surgery, but then she has rosacea.
She’s an assertive person, but refused to make a fuss. She had major water retention but they sent her home at 8:30 pm on Sunday night, of which she was delighted. She had to have oxygen. It was quite challenging for me to set up the condenser
and all the paraphernalia as I am mechanically deficient. I gave her pain med and
she slept all night first time in years.
She was still on a liquid diet so I stayed on one too, in solidarity, although I
do admit to eating ice cream bars when I went across the way to my house.
The next morning we looked for medication instructions. The hospital ha d insisted
that the doctor had given them to her in an appointment the week before. When she
called the surgeon’s office, the nurse said she would email the instructions but
never did.
We took our dogs for a walk and she pointed out to me that her belly looked nine
months pregnant. I suggested she weigh herself. We were both shocked that she’d
gained twenty pounds! I’d never heard of anyone gaining weight after bypass
surgery. I know she stayed on her liquid diet since there was nothing else in the
house. How could this be?
As a former nurse, she explained to me fancy terms for water
retention. She took a diuretic, but only lost five pounds. A
friend, who had the surgery and lost and kept off two hundred
pounds, came over. She was shocked at my friend’s water
retention. We took pictures of her feet. Her poor little toes
looked like sausages.
The good news is that she no longer has to take medications
for high blood pressure or diabetes. As of this writing, a week
after surgery, she still is seven pounds heavier than when she went in for the operation. It must be that superglue fat refusing to give up.

The spring season is fully behind us now and the results were
encouraging. Although sales were adversely affected by the wildfires of May and June, the overall results were the best the Park
has seen in many years. In analyzing the “CMA” (Comparative
Market Analysis) overall sales for Munds Park for 2014 versus
2013, the Park had a 52.6% increase over the prior year in total
volume. 2014 sales totaled $15,743,450 in total sales for zone
7340, Munds Park versus the previous year of $10,322,349.
Eighty-five transactions closed in the spring season in 2014 versus
fifty-nine in 2013
Interestingly, the sales volume statistics also reflected that the
high sale in 2014 thus far was a new build sale of a 2700 square
foot home off Krolak Way which sold for $520,000. Last year’s
high was also off Krolak way and was $469,500. The low sale was
a lot for $56,500 this year versus one last year for $40,000.
Average sale price increased from $174,975 last year to $185,217
in 2014…. A 5.8% increase.
Pending Sales, Pending Taking Back-ups and Active with
Contingency have hit a year-long high of thirty transactions in the
hopper as of this article’s writing. More importantly, they total
more than $6,206,300 in listing volume which is a huge number
for one month. The only components showing a decrease this year
to last year is percentage of list price being attained. Last year
total properties were selling for .94% of asking price and this year
that percentage has fallen to .92%. This may be a factor of owners
over-pricing their properties earlier in the season and having to
reduce their asking price in order to elicit an offer.
It is encouraging to see the market rebound so quickly from the
awful June performance. Based on the current trends it is highly
likely that a strong sales performance could continue through the
third quarter poising this year to end on a very successful note! If

MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY
EMERGENCY SHELTER
Around three years ago Munds Park experienced a storm severe enough that
Interstate 17 was closed. One of the results of that action was a group of
stranded motorists needing food and lodging in our area. So our community
residents sprung into action opening the Church giving shelter to those in need.
Due to this incident, the MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY EMERGENCY
SHELTER was established. With some assistance from Red Cross, the Munds
Park Community Church was officially designated as a shelter in case of any
type of disaster that could occur in our area.
As of today, we have a supply of food, toiletries, blankets, cots and a group of
volunteers along with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
dedicated to help sustain 100 people for three days. Several issues that come
with an emergency shelter have been addressed in order to keep the shelter
running in an efficient manner, but it doesn’t mean that we couldn’t use the help
of additional volunteers who live in Munds Park full-time or part-time. For
example, some of those coming to the emergency shelter may have a pet travelling with them and the shelter cannot have pets; it would be of great service if
members of our community could take a pet to their home temporarily.
Residents who can play an instrument or enjoy organizing games to entertain a
group are a valuable asset. Even if you could just come down for a couple of
hours to give the core group of volunteers a little break. That would be appreciated. If you would like to be on our list of helpers, please contact our
Emergency Shelter Manager at 602-828-3272.
Our wish is that we never have to activate the emergency shelter again, but it
never hurts to be prepared!

After four years of working to establish a method to enhance the front entrances to Munds Park on both the East and West side of the frontage road embankment, the MPBA Beautification Project is one step closer to being able to initiate the project. In June the group met with local county officials and
the Arizona Department of Transportation as well as representatives from several local philanthropic agencies (Munds Park Business Alliance, Pinewood
Property Owner’s Association and, Pinewood Sanitary District) and businesses to explain the required process in order for the group to move forward with
the Beautification Project.
A Road Maintenance District is being developed to include the entire commercial district of Munds Park. The area will include all of the properties adjoining the freeway on the West side of the I-17 and all of the commercial properties that adjoin or abut the area to the East side of the freeway. Polling ballots were distributed to all property owners either via US Mail or in person. Each parcel owner was asked to participate in the initial balloting so that we
would know whether or not we have the required 51% participation to initiate the RMD.
Lucinda Andreani, Deputy Director of Public Works for Coconino County agreed to have the county have the petition drafted if 51% agree beforehand and
that the county will pay the legal expenses with 70% participation. By July 25th, which was the requested reply date, more than 51% of the parcel owners
had agreed to participate so the RMD will be moving forward. It is the committees hope that more than 70% of the parcel owners will participate which
will allow all monies raised to date to be spent on Beautification…trees, bushes and water and not on legal expenses.
Businesses and property Parcel owners adjacent to the entrance are being asked to support a Road Maintenance District so that the Beautification project can be accomplished within the county and ADOT guidelines.
The funds raised and grants received will be deposited with the county under the new RMD, then the Beautification Project would be completed. Once completed, the Road Maintenance District would be dissolved by the
inaugural directors appointed to the board. No cost to Taxpayers….no tax implication because of the immediate
dissolution of the district once the work was completed. A Win-Win for all Munds Park Property Owners!
All Commercial District Property owners are invited to attend the Garden Party on September 3, 2014 from 4:00-6:00 pm at 17825 Golden Pond. There
will be renderings of the proposed Road Maintenance District (RMD) as well as representatives from MPBA, PPOA, PSD and the three appointees to the
board, Dan Hellman, president of Pinewood Country Club, Dick Drinen, Chairman of the Pinewood Sanitary District Board and Len Friedlund, PresidentElect of the Munds Park Business Alliance.

Pinewood Players Announces Auditions for 2015 Season
By Bill Kane, Lynn Rouyer and Marsha Propps
Auditions will be held Saturday, August 30 at Noon for the three adult plays to be done next summer at the Pinewood Country Club
Library, located in the Pinewood Country Club. The plays will be in June and August of 2015. Plays selected are:
1st Play – Hallelujah Girls, directed by Lynn Rouyer
2nd Play – Be My Baby, directed by Bill Kane
3rd Play – Whose Wives Are They Anyway, directed by Marsha Propps
Below are synopsis’ and character descriptions for the three plays. Please join us on August 30 if you are interested in auditioning for any of these plays.
Hallelujah Girls – by Lynn Rouyer
Do you have a bucket list? Or are you putting off til tomorrow what you would love to do? Well, time is precious and the girls of Eden Falls, GA realize this
after their dear friend's funeral. The action in this rollicking Southern comedy takes place in SPA-DEE-DAH!, the abandoned church-turned day spa where
this group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. If they are going to change their lives and achieve their dreams they have to get on it NOW! But Sugar
Lee, their high-spirited, determined leader, has her hands full keeping the women motivated. Carlene's given up on romance, having buried three husbands. Nita's a nervous wreck from running interference between her problematic son and his probation officer. Mavis' marriage is so stagnant she's wondering how she can fake her own death to get out of it. And sweet, simple Crystal entertains them all, singing Christmas carols with her own, hilarious lyrics.
The comic tension mounts when a sexy, ex-boyfriend shows up unexpectedly, a marriage proposal comes from an unlikely suitor and Sugar Lee's arch rival,
Bunny, vows she'll stop at nothing to steal the spa away from her. By the time the wo9men rally together to overcome these obstacles and launch their new,
improved lives, you've got a side-splitting, joyful comedy that will make you laugh out loud and shout “Hallelujah”.
The Cast: The characters should be portrayed as real people, not Southern caricatures.
Carlene Travis: (50's) A no-nonsense gal with dry wit. Married three times, Carlene says she's been branded the “Black Widow of Eden, Falls” and that her
'romantic life is history'. She's convinced by Sugar Lee to take a chance on Porter. Carlene is Crystal's sister.
Nita Mooney: (50's) A very sweet, simple country woman. Nita works for the county, but really lives vicariously through romance novels and their storylines
(which she has memorized). She h as a freeloading, lawbreaking son. Nita is a glass MORE than half full kind of person.
Crystal Hart: (50's) Daffy and loveable. Very creative, extroverted, and undaunted. Crystal regularly dresses in costume and sings her own lyrics to popular
Christmas songs. Crystal is Carlene's sister. Actress should be able to sing confidently, but not necessarily perfectly.
Sugar Lee Thompkins: (50's) The ideal of a Southern woman. Dramatically attired in an explosion of color, Sugar Lee is vivacious, strong and smart. It is
her idea to turn the old church into a day spa-as she says, “a place where women can come and shed their worries, refocus their lives, and walk out feeling
like they're on top of the world”. She doesn't comprehend that her past may be the on obstacle that she cannot overcome to save her small
business.
Bunny Southerland: (50's) Upbeat and seemingly pleasant, Bunny wears an ever ready sunny smile all the while being deliciously judgmental and passive
aggressive. The self-proclaimed social arbiter of Eden Falls, Bunny feels status is all important. She wants to take the church from Sugar to open a museum
in her name.
Bobby Dwayne Dillahunt: (50's): Unaware of his rugged good looks, Bobby has a self-depreciating sense of humor and a charming manner. He dated
Sugar in high school and wanted to marry her. Since then, he describes his life as a 'couple of failed marriages, couple of failed businesses, and a couple of
knee operations'. Bobby is now in construction and Sugar reluctantly hires him.
Porter Padgett: (50's) A good hearted, gregarious blowhard. Porter doesn't know when to shut up and tends to talk louder than most people. He really enjoys his own humor and has a big 'horsey laugh'. Porter works for the post office and lives with his mother.
There is the potential for another male role that is the chauffeur, whipping boy for Bunny. And of course, there may be a woman or two that visit the SPADEE-DAH.
Be My Baby – By Bill Kane
This is the newest play by Ken Ludwig, who wrote several of the very funny plays we have done recently: Lend Me A Tenor and Leading Ladies, for example. Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter as they two leads evoked cheers and a standing ovation every single night of its world premiere in 2005. The press described it as “a funny, feel-good kind of show that makes you warm all over.”
The play tells the story of John, an irascible older “country boy” and an uptight “city” woman, Maude, who take on the journey of a lifetime. They are brought
together when his ward marries her niece. Then, when the young couple decides to adopt a newborn baby, the older couple has to travel thousands of miles
to California to pick up the child and bring her safely home. The problem is, John and Maude despise each other. To make matters worse, they get stranded
in San Francisco for several weeks and are expected to jointly care for the helpless newborn. There they form a new partnership and learn some startling
lessons about life and love.
Besides the two older leads, there are good supporting roles for the young couple. In addition, there are half a dozen small roles (doctor, nurse, judge, waitress, housekeeper, etc.) that are ideal for some first time actors to give a try.
Whose Wives Are They Anyway – By Marsha Propps
The cosmetics company has been sold and two of its Vice Presidents, David and John have planned a weekend off before the new CEO arrives
on Monday. With their wives safely off to New York on a shopping spree they check into the Oakfield Golf and Country Club intending to "golf
their brains out". The unexpected encounter with their new boss (who they were shocked to learn is a woman) turns their plans upside down.
She insists on meeting their wives, stating blithely " no one who went golfing for a weekend without their wife would ever work for me". Now
John and David have to produce wives and the hilarity begins. The cast of 3 men and 5 women will create non-stop laughter!

confined within the boundaries of the owner’s property.

A concerned community member called The Pinewood News inquiring about the dog leash law. The caller said there had numerous
large dogs wandering the area with no owners in sight.

We were visiting family in San Diego a couple of weeks ago and in the middle of
the at-home happy hour there, I received a text and photo from Andy: “We found
this feather while hiking in Munds Park. What bird is it from?” At first glance I
didn’t know, so I showed the photo on my phone to Andrew, our niece’s husband,
who (conveniently for me) works in one of the bird departments of the San Diego
Safari Park, previously called the Wild Animal Park. Andrew was sitting in front
of the television with the rest of the men watching pre-season football. He manages a department that handles rare bird egg incubation and raising chicks and has
cool projects like transporting captivity- bred California Condors for release into
the wild in Idaho.

The Fallen Feather episode really makes me appreciate again the many forms of
technology we have at our fingertips. It probably was entertaining watching Andrew and me excitedly solve the mystery of the feather by texting, surfing the internet, scrolling through our bird guides, and sending photos using just our cell
phones. My favorite birding app is iBird Plus and it quickly seems to be replacing
my books. However, I still treasure the very large Audubon’s “Birds of America”
volume my parents bought me when I was 11 years old. Not only does it have extensive information in it, but it also takes me back to happy times pouring over the
pages and first discovering the many species of birds we have here in the States
and their unique characteristics.

easy to apply such as compost tea. Many might associate natural fertilizers with the pungent smell of a horse stall or chicken coop however a
well matured compost pile smells like nothing but healthy dirt. Compost and worm castings also provide optimal soil structure. Here we are
surrounded by nothing but compact clay and rocks so soil structure is
just as if not more critical than fertilizing nutrients. Soil structure refers
to the drainage and moisture retention characteristics of soil. So although the synthetic fertilizers might be on sale at Home Depot, trust
me, a good natural fertilizer is much more of a bang for your buck. Stay
informed, your plants will thank you.

The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its origins stem from the desire
of the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. It became
a federal holiday in 1894. It was originally intended that the day
would be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciate
the work of the trade and labor organizations. After the parade, a
festival was to be held to amuse local workers and their families. In
later years, prominent men and women held speeches. This is less
common now, but is sometimes seen in election years. One of the
reasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in September was to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day
and Thanksgiving.

Cabaret Nights, Reader’s Theatre will close the 2014 Season
Join us for another fun-filled Cabaret Nights, Reader’s Theatre production! A
whole new set of hilarious skits are on tap! The final performances of the 2014
season will be presented on Thursday, September 4 at 7pm and Sunday, September 7 at 2:30pm in the Pinewood Country Club Show Room. If you thought
the previous productions were fun, “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” Warning: Uncontrolled laughter will abound while watching "Sorry About That Lord" directed by Doug Pusateri, "Surprise” directed by Doug Pusateri, "Brownies"
directed by Annie Weissman, "Chocolate" directed by Doug Pusateri and "A
Slight Misunderstanding" directed by Jackie Wolff. There have been six consecutive sell-outs for the Cabaret Nights shows so buy your tickets now or run the
risk of missing the fun of seeing these highly entertaining vignettes performed

These are some of the remarkable cast of Pinewood Players final play of the
season, "Cactus Flower." You will watch the transformation of a "Prickly Old
Maid Dental Nurse" Stephanie Dickinson, played by Melanie Westmark, into
an outgoing lovely delicious flower! You'll awwww, as womanizer and expert
liar, Dr. Julian Winston, played by Bill Gibney, discovers what he had and almost lost. You'll empathize as the silly and naive Toni Simmons, played by
Cheryl Parker, discovers just how she has been played by her "married" lover.
You'll be surprised when Igor Sullivan, played by Bill Spain, shows up in
Toni's apartment dressed in only a towel and a smile! Harvey Greenfield, the
seedy, conniving friend of Dr. Winston, played by Lee Henry, will keep you
laughing as he tries to keep getting free dental care for all his girl friends.
Mrs. Dixon Durant, "Ms. Frozen Foods," played by Phyllis Schurz, will amaze
you when you discover what is more important to her than dental health.
Your heart will pound along with Sr. Arturo Sanchez, South American U.N.
Delegate, played by Carlos Navarrete, as he woos the delicate Nurse Dickinson. You'll share the disgust of Angie, one of Harvey's dentally challenged
girlfriends, played by Sunnie Saperstein, as she watches the playful shenanigans of all the other characters. You'll be entertained by Stanley the
Waiter/Stanley the Music Lover, played by Stan Debber, as he bumbles
through life in the '70's.
"Cactus Flower" may be the final play of the season, but it may prove to be
the funniest journey back in time you will experience this year! It has been
an amazing experience working with the talented cast of the Pinewood Players and also working in and around many others in the Pinewood Players
community. My Producer, (Candy, my wife) and I have been amazed at the
contributions by members, and the willingness to part with some of their belongings to be used as props and scene dressings. The incredibly talented
construction crew that brought the sets and some of our larger props to life,
Stage Manager, Georgia Osborne, who is responsible for the play once we hit
the stage, her assistant Candy Miller, Phyllis Schurz, who is coordinating the
Cast Party afterward, the behind the stage crew, including Phyllis, Carlos, and
Sunnie as well as Pam Uveges, Rosie Martin and others that haven't been recruited yet, have made this production of "Cactus Flower" something that
will be remembered for a very long time. Hurry online, or to the ticket office

The Girl You Left Behind

A true story made headlines November 4, 2013. A trove of approximately 1500 works of art confiscated by the Nazis in WWII were
seized in a Munich apartment. The value was estimated to be $1.3 billion by artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. The news went
on to say that determining the rightful owners of the works decades
after they were either sold under duress or seized could take years.

Where in the World
is The Pinewood News?
One might think this would be a great premise for a novel and The
Girl You Left Behind might just be that novel. Published earlier this year, it was obviously written before this news broke. The work of art at the heart of this story is of
course fictional as are the events surrounding it. The painting entitled “The Girl You
Left Behind”, was painted in the year 1915 by a French artist, Eduardo Leferve, and it
resurfaces in the year 2001 in London.
There are actually two girls left behind in this story. The first is Sophie Lefevre whose
artist husband Eduardo goes to war for France in 1916. The second is Liv a young
widow in London whose husband dies prematurely in 2000. Their stories, some eighty
years apart, are connected through a painting of “the girl” who is actually Sophie
painted by her husband. The painting resurfaces in the story in Liv’s bedroom. It was a
gift from her husband on their honeymoon. The two girls are united by a passion for
this painting which represents both their husband’s love and devotion to them.
The dual timeframe storyline almost a century apart flows effortlessly from one to the
other, although Sophie’s historical storyline is, I believe, the stronger of the two. Sophie, struggling to keep the family’s hotel afloat under the German occupation of
France, hangs her portrait in the hotel where it is a daily reminder of the proud self-reliant girl her husband saw. She wants this reminder as the German invasion causes her
to feel that the “glowing girl willful in her confidence” is slipping away due to enemy
oppression and poor nutrition. Although the opening scene would have readers doubt a
lack of confidence when she confronts the German Kommandant’s accusation that she
is harboring livestock. It is my favorite scene in the book.
The risk she takes in hanging the portrait in a public place is that it is also visible to all.
When the German Kommandant notices the painting, his comments reveal that he is a
cultured man. The portrait is the catalyst that causes Sophie to risk everything—reputation, family and her life—in hopes of seeing her Eduardo again.
What follows is a wary connection made between the Kommandant and Sophie that
leads to tragic circumstances
Ninety years later the portrait hangs in Liv’s bedroom, as a cherished memento of her
husband and their honeymoon. On the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death,
Livy meets Paul and his friendship is the first stirring of feeling she’s had for anyone
since the death of her husband. Unfortunately, Paul works for a company specializing
in the return of artworks looted during wartime. I think you can see where this is
headed. Instead of a blossoming relationship, they are now on opposing sides. The tension mounts as the case of rightful ownership goes to court. Documents produced at
the trial take us back in time to Sophie’s ordeal and we discover, as Paul Harvey would
say, “the rest of the story”. Was the portrait stolen from the Lefevre family or was it
gifted?
Liv, like Sophie, takes a great risk as she defends her right to keep the portrait as she
becomes subject to unthinking public hostility. Although the painting disappeared during WWI, she gets hate mail urging her to end the suffering of the Jewish people persecuted in WWII. Return what is rightly theirs. Both heroines are united in their
determination to fight for the thing they love most-- whatever the cost.
As one review, which I totally agree with, says, “JoJo Moyes does a majestic job of
conjuring a cast of characters who are charismatic, credible and utterly compelling.”
Moyes places her characters in extremely difficult situations where the stakes are high
no matter what decision they make.
JoJo Moyes, who lives in London, is a former journalist turned novelist. Her novel Foreign Fruit won the Romantic Novelists’ Association Novel of the Year Award in 2004.
In closing this summer of book reviews in Pinewood, I wish all book lovers time to curl
up with many good books till we meet again next summer.

Pinewood History - Preview
Today you hear a lot about what is Pinewood and what is Munds Park. Some say
Munds Park is the “downtown” area and Pinewood is to the east and north of
where the “arches used to be.” If you don’t know where that is, it’s the corner of
Pinewood Blvd and Fairway or the west end of the golf course. But did you know
that our little community is made up of several subdivisions… the first being
Northern-Aire. Northern-Aire is the property just north of Pinewood Blvd and
South of the golf course.
Did you know that Oakwood, just east of the Country Club, was not named for the
Oak trees here in Munds Park, but a man who owned the property whose name
was Red Oakes!
Northern-Aire Development Company purchased the Lake O’Dell property in
1958. Between 1958 and 1960 the current golf course was constructed. Lake
O’Dell water was used for livestock, wildlife, and vegetables. In the twenties and
early thirties, Henry Burrus purchased the homestead and grew onions, asparagus,
cabbage and carrots as well as alfalfa and grain.

Awhile ago while passing on information to people heading out into the forest,
Gene Riffle saw sheep! Yes, thousands of sheep! It is not an uncommon sight in
the spring and early summer. For many years and even today, sheep were driven
through here from the Casa Grande area to summer grazing in Northern Arizona.
Believe it or not, sheep in Arizona once numbered in the millions. They were
driven from around the Casa Grande area up to the Mogollon rim and South of
Flagstaff for shearing and breeding. I was not able to get any pictures, but I will
keep looking.

When I looked on the internet for sheep ranchers I found that there were a couple
“driveways” to Northern Arizona used extensively by the sheepherders. Two families who still trail their sheep are the Auza and Manterola families. They historically trail their sheep from the winter range in Casa Grande to the summer pastures
in the north. Today, they truck the sheep from Casa Grande to Cordes Junction, and
then trail the sheep north. Trailing the sheep is good for the health of the sheep and
improves lambing in November. The Black Canyon and Beaverhead-Grief Hill
Sheep Driveways have been used for over a century. There is an outdoor exhibit in
Black Canyon City Heritage Park that presents the story of the trails and the two
families. You can also visit Cordes Station which has been owned and operated by
the Cordes family for 125 years. It was once a bustling, hustling stage stop for all
travelers including the sheep herders and now gives you a look into the past.
There is another accessible and interesting part of this history, the Sheep bridge
over the Verde. The road is accessible from two different main roads. FR-24 is an
improved dirt road which runs through the Seven Springs recreation area. This
road starts at the end of the Carefree Highway and is easily passable by passenger
vehicles with 2 wheel drive. The intersection with FR-269 will be evident as they
are the only two main roads in the area.

FR-269 can also be accessed off of I-17 at the Bloody Basin Rd East exit. As you
pull off the highway you will come to a dirt staging area with a description of the
area. From here just continue heading East through some ranching country and you
will eventually come out at Sheeps Bridge. The bride was built in 1943 and the
walkway is 475 feet long and 3 feet wide. Before the bridge sheep were lost to the
dangerous Verde river crossings. The bridge was entered into the National Registry of Historical places in 1978. Then in 1988 it had to be rebuilt because the
original was in disrepair.
Shortly after the intersection of FR-269 and FR-24 the road becomes somewhat
more bumpy and it would be wise to slow your vehicle down to a near crawl to
avoid breaking loose any of your fillings. A passenger vehicle MAY make it down
to the bridge, but it would be advisable to at least have some clearence between
yourself and the ground.
Sheeps Bridge is located near 34° 5'18.24"N, 111°42'28.04"W.
For the last few years I have talked a lot about a history of the Pinewood Subdivision and have been gathering information and taking notes and now I’m ready to
start getting it together. This is a small preview and I will start next summer with
the story…. Bear with me and contact me if you have any pictures or other early
Pinewood information.

Nature Valley and National Geographic Visitor Center Open New
Arizona National Scenic Trail Exhibit

The Arizona National Scenic Trail will now be celebrated worldwide. The 800-mile-long Arizona Trail is showcased in a brand
new, large-scale exhibit at the National Geographic Visitor Center in Tusayan, near the entrance to the Canyon’s South Rim. The
exhibit, sponsored by Nature Valley, was unveiled to the public during an inspiring grand opening ceremony late in the afternoon
of August 14.
The new Arizona National Scenic Trail Exhibit fills the National Geographic Visitor Center’s interior courtyard and features a large
map of Arizona depicting the entire trail along with wall graphics explaining the Arizona Trail’s diverse terrain, plants and animals.
“It’s like a virtual tour of the Arizona National Scenic Trail,” said Janet Rosener, General Manager, National Geographic Visitor
Center. “The display really captures the natural beauty that exists throughout the state, as well as the diversity of trail users who
find adventure on the Arizona Trail. We are sure that our visitors from around the world will take a great interest in the Arizona
Trail because of this exhibit.”
The Arizona National Scenic Trail Exhibit grand opening was a wonderful and fitting event
with speakers, dignitaries, plus board and staff members of the Arizona Trail Association.
Janet Rosener of the Visitor Center made the opening remarks and served as emcee.
Other speakers included Matthew Nelson, Arizona Trail Association Executive Director; Art
Babbott, Coconino County Supervisor District One; Greg Bryan, Mayor of Tusayan; VIPs
from Pink Jeep Tours and teachers from the nearby Grand Canyon School. In addition to
commemorating the new Trail exhibit, the grand opening also highlighted Nature Valley’s
support and their teamwork with the NGVC to support the Grand Canyon School. Romy
Murphy of Pink Jeep Tours was introduced as the new volunteer maintenance steward for
trail section 37C of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. Dippin' Dots Ice Cream was also on
Arizona Trail Association board members and staff, elected site for the grand opening and they donated proceeds during the event to benefit the Arizona Trail Association.

"We are pleased to be able to provide support both for raising worldwide
awareness of the incredible majesty and diversity of the Arizona National Scenic Trail as well as contributions to our local school and community,” said
Rosener. “This May we co-sponsored a community event supporting Arizona
Trail awareness and stewardship and last year the Grand Canyon School was given $1,300 by collecting Nature Valley granola
bar box tops.”
This May the National Geographic Visitor Center was also a gateway community event sponsor with other Town of Tusayan businesses of The Arizona Trail Trek. Accomplished Arizona hiker, Sirena Dufault, walked the entire Arizona Trail – from Arizona’s
border with Mexico, through the Grand Canyon to the Utah border – during two and half months raising funds for the nonprofit Arizona Trail Association from online crowd funding and from donations at gateway community events.
At the end of the gala grand opening in August, Ms. Dufault read a poem about the Arizona Trail by the late Dale Shewalter, the
father of the Trail. Shewalter first had the dream and the vision and then provided many years’ worth of energy and organizing to
get the Trail built.
“Each year, the Visitor Center receives hundreds of thousands of visitors,” said Matthew Nelson. “And for many it is their introduction to the natural wonders and human history found within Grand Canyon. Now, visitors will be surrounded by inspiring images
and get an informative initial tour of the Arizona Trail the moment they step into the courtyard.”
The National Geographic Visitor Center, located one mile south of the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park South Rim, and
Nature Valley are proud sponsors of the Arizona Trail Association and the Arizona National Scenic Trail Exhibit. An Arizona Trail
segment is only a few steps away from the National Geographic Visitor Center. The Visitor Center also provides visitors with
Grand Canyon information, maps, park passes, Pink Jeep Tours and has an IMAX® Theater, which shows hourly the popular

the teaching (Ray considers himself a teacher not a
preacher) and music were a wonderful way for all

Free Wood Cutting Opportunity to Enhance Wildlife Habitat
FLAGSTAFF —The Arizona Game and Fish Commission has authorized for the first time, by permit only, fuel wood cutting and
removal on the Lamar Haines Wildlife Area (LHWA). The purpose of the wood removal is to decrease the threat of a catastrophic wild fire, protect the area’s unique cultural and
historical value, and to improve the area’s wildlife habitat. The
LHWA is 12 miles northwest of Flagstaff off Snow Bowl Road.
The public can only obtain a permit from the Flagstaff Game and Fish office
starting August 29, with the wood cutting season opening Sept. 1 and running
through Nov. 15, 2014.
* Fuel wood cutting is only for dead and down wood, no live standing or dead
wood may be cut.
* All permit holders must be 18 years or older.
“The department has decided to provide this unique opportunity in an effort to
maintain a healthy wildlife area while giving the public the chance to collect
free firewood”. Says Arizona Game and Fish Department Wildlife Program Manager Carl Lutch. “There is a lot of dead and down wood at Lamar Haines and we
need help removing it to improve the habitat for the wildlife.”
