Director’s Message
This April and May, we are paying tribute to a number of artists.
Local contemporary dance company ECNAD, one of the oldest in
Singapore, is closing down after 17 years. The Arts House has had
a long and fruitful collaboration with ECNAD since we opened in
2004. We pay tribute to ECNAD and its two co-founders Lim Chin
Huat and Tan How Choon with a double-bill farewell performance,
Reborn.Fullstop... (page 15).
One of the reasons for ECNAD’s closing is the perennially vexing
problem of funding. While state grants have increased over the
years, arts sponsorship and donation have stayed largely stagnant
over the last decade. Another sobering fact: Donating to the cultural
sector stands at about $7 a person on a per capita basis, compared
to $13 in Australia, $14 in Britain and $35 in the US. We do have
a long way to go.
But there is cause for cautious optimism, as the government recently
announced a $200 million Cultural Donation Matching Fund,
in which the state will match private sector donations to arts and
heritage groups, museums and institutions. This initiative would
hopefully spur more arts philanthropy, and more support for artists
and organisations on the whole.
ECNAD has contributed a lot to the dance industry as well as its
education and outreach effort. Please join us in cheering them for
their last performance!
The year 2013 also marks two milestones: The 100th year of Benjamin
Britten's birth, and the 200th year of the publication of Pride and
Prejudice by Jane Austen. A little known fact about Britten: He made
several stops in Singapore between 1955 and 1957, and even gave
a short concert at the then Victoria Memorial Hall. A weekend of
vocal recitals of Britten at The Old Parliament House would thus
seem a most fitting tribute (Britten 100, page 28).
To say fan favourite Austen has enduring power is an understatement.
We shall attempt to dissect Austen Power through the screenings of
some of the best film adaptations of her books, as well as a panel
discussion to apprehend her universal appeal (Austen Power, page
8 – 10).
See you at The Arts House!

The first of its kind in Singapore, But Is The Book Better? is a monthly

adaptation, and to spark off a discussion or just good-humoured
debate about the theme, writer or genre of the month.
AUSTEN POWER
On the 200th Anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice,
we pay tribute to Jane Austen with a two-month focus on the film
adaptations of her most famous works. Revered as a timeless literary
figure, Austen’s power lies in her witty and clever dialogue as well as
her keen observations of gender and class.
Austen Power - Panel discussion ON Jane Austen
4 May, 6pm
Join us for a panel discussion of all things Austen. We will be
exploring the universal allure of Jane Austen’s works and the themes
that appears in her novels.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Pride and Prejudice is the most adapted of all Austen's novels, from
the 1995 BBC series which catapulted Colin Firth to fame to the
Bollywood-style adaptation Bride and Prejudice. The original title of
the novel was First Impressions. It was most likely changed due to two
other works having the same title that were published previously — a
novel by Margaret Holford and a comedy by Horace Smith. In 2003
the BBC conducted a poll for the UK's Best Loved Book. Pride and
Prejudice came in second after The Lord of The Rings.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1940)
Not only was Austen's novel used as the source material for the
adaptation but also Helen Jerome's 1935 stage adaptation of the novel.
The film was set in the 1820s and 30s to allow for the use of more
elaborate costumes than the Regency style to which the novel is set.
15 & 21 Apr, 7.30pm \ Director: Robert Z. Leonard \ Writers: Aldous Huxley,
Helen Jerome, Jane Murfin \ Cast: Laurence Olivier, Greer Garson, Maureen
O'Sullivan \ 1940 \ US \ 118min \ PG
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2005)
This film is the first adaptation of the novel for screen since the 1940
version. While the latter focuses much more on the romance between
the two central characters, this version is more in keeping with the
novel as it is told through Elizabeth's perspective and focuses not just
on her relationship with Darcy but also with her family.

EMMA
The casting of Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse received
mixed reviews. Austenites found the Hollywood actress' portrayal
of Emma did not evolve from haughty to humble as the character
in Austen's novel does. However, critics generally praised her
performance. Mick LaSalle from The San Francisco Chronicle felt
Paltrow had "wit, timing and a to-the-manor-born graciousness".
16 & 19 Apr, 7.30pm
Director/Writer: Douglas McGrath
Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam, Alan Cumming
1996 \ US \ 121min \ PG
PERSUASION
Persuasion was the last novel written by Austen before she passed
away. In this adaptation, theatre actors Amanda Root and Ciaran
Hinds shine in their roles as lovers Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick
Wentworth. Caryn James from The New York Times lauded both
actors for "form(ing) the powerful centre of the film".

Cast: Amanda Root, Ciarán Hinds, Susan Fleetwood

MANSFIELD PARK
Patricia Rozema’s adaptation of Mansfield Park varied greatly from
the novel in her interpretation of Fanny Price from shy and timid to
extroverted and outspoken. This in addition to eliminating characters
such as Fanny’s brother, William, altered the course of the story. In
his review, film critic Roger Ebert said the director, “makes no claim
to be a faithful telling of Jane Austen’s novel and achieves something
more interesting instead.”

CLUELESS
Jane Austen meets Beverly Hills 90210. Clueless is an American
comedy loosely based on Emma. Alicia Silverstone stars as high
school student, Cher. She is rich and spoilt, but underneath that
superficial exterior is a genuine and intelligent girl dealing with the
trials and tribulation of being a teenager.
Clueless is one of the first modern adaptations of Jane Austen's
novels and became a surprise hit in 1995 for its fresh and interesting
take of Austen's Emma.
3 May, 7.30pm & 5 May, 3pm
Director/Writer: Amy Heckerling
Cast: Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd
1995 \ US \ 97min \ PG
SENSE AND
SENSIBILITY
Emma Thompson won her first Academy Award as a screenwriter for
her adaptation. She spent four years working on the screenplay and
felt one of her greatest challenges was "making the male characters
effective... Willoughby is really the only male who springs out in
three dimensions." Her solution was to alter and delete certain
scenes to give them more presence.
Producer Lindsay Doran interviewed over 15 directors and surprised
many with her choice of Ang Lee, including himself. Lee said, "I was
brought up in Taiwan, what do I know about 19th-century England?
...In my films I've been trying to mix social satire and family drama. I
realize that all along that I've been trying to do Jane Austen without
knowing it. Jane Austen was my destiny."

REBORN.FULLSTOP..
A Farewell Performance By ECNAD
Reborn.Fullstop.. marks local dance company ECNAD’s 17th
anniversary celebration as well as farewell performance. This
double bill is a special collaboration with The Arts House, a longtime
partner of ECNAD.
First set up as Dance Dimension Project in 1996 by co-founders Lim
Chin Huat and Tan How Choon, ECNAD renamed itself in 2001
and has been contributing to the Singapore contemporary dance
scene for 17 years. The company is known for its site-specific, crossdisciplinary performances, boasting strong visuals imbued with an
innovative creative spirit. ECNAD has also been dedicating effort to
its education and outreach initiatives to promote dance.
While Reborn.Fullstop.. is ECNAD’s final public performance,
however, a full stop might not necessarily mean the end, but it
instead signals a rebirth and a new beginning. Reborn explores the
journey of new path and metamorphosis of a creative spirit that is
situated in an urban setting, while Fullstop offers a glance into Chin
Huat’s creative world and his process of creating for the stage.
Once again and for the final time, both co-founders Chin Huat and
How Choon have co-created the show and will perform together.
They will be reunited with some associate members and students

ALTERITY: DOUBLE BILL
Alterity Productions
Alterity – the other, the alternate ending.
Alterity is an exciting double-bill that comprises local playwright
Geraldine Song’s Mosaic and Nurhalizah. In addressing issues that
revolve around disability and aging, the voices in these empowering
pieces will hold their own and encourage stimulating discourse
about stereotypes surrounding these issues.
Nurhalizah takes the audience into the life of an uneducated
woman abandoned by both her husband and her three children,
and explores the role of Singaporean youth. Where are her three
children? Will they come back to her, and appreciate the mother
who brought them up single-handedly?
Mosaic explores the life of an undergraduate, Cedric, who has been
diagnosed with ‘Mosaic’ – a variant of Down’s Syndrome that leaves
only a small percentage of his cells affected. So it is not physically

SFS TALKIES @ THE ARTS HOUSE
This Is Not A Film
Watch the Singapore premiere of this award-winning documentary,
shot partially on an iPhone and smuggled into France in a cake for a
last-minute submission to Cannes. This Is Not a Film depicts the dayto-day life of acclaimed director Jafar Panahi, a renowned Iranian
director who received a six-year prison sentence and 20-year ban
from filmmaking and conducting interviews with foreign press, due
to his open support of the opposition party in Iran’s 2009 election.
While appealing his sentence, fellow director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb
visits Panahi at his Tehran apartment and films him talking to his
family and lawyer on the phone, reflecting on the art of filmmaking
as he waits for a decision on his appeal.

With the moonlight as a backdrop, old friends Azam and Ali look back
on their childhood. Returning to the coastal village that he was so eager
to flee as a child, Azam, now a successful musician reconnects with his
friend Ali. Together with Ali's spirited wife, Minah, the three embark on
a lengthy night time fishing expedition and tiptoe around the reasons
for Azam's long absence. Minah's demonstration of holding her breath
underwater leads to Azam's going underwater too and this triggers a
retrospective look at the childhood days of the two friends.
Shot in the Malaysian village where the director Tan Chui Mui was
born, this film weaves myths and stories through the main character.
It captures the reminiscence of childhood friends while portraying
the themes of patience and desire, intertwining fantasy and reality,
past and present.
About Tan Chui Mui
Tan Chui Mui (1978, Kuantan, Malaysia) has worked as a columnist for
local newspapers and magazines. She directed some short films before
making her feature debut Love Conquers All in 2006 that won the Tiger
Award at the 36th International Film Festival Rotterdam. Her second
feature, Year Without A Summer was awarded the Special Mention
(Cinema of the Future) at the 13th Buenos Aires International Festival of
Independent Cinema in 2011.

BRITTEN 100
The Arts House
2013 marks the 100th year of Benjamin Britten's birth, an occasion that
would be marked globally, attesting to the far-reaching influence the
composer has had.
While on the tour to the Far East between 1955 and 1957, Britten made
several stops in Singapore and even gave a short concert with his
partner, British Tenor, Peter Pears, at the then Victoria Memorial Hall.
Presenting a weekend of vocal recitals of Britten at The Old Parliament
House at this time would thus be a most fitting tribute.
On 11 May, we start first with Britten’s Five Canticles for solo voices and
instruments. Written over nearly three decades, the pieces reflect the
inner dialogues of the composer through the years until just before his
death. The intimate setting of the text offers us a glimpse into Britten’s
mind and changing emotions, and would serve as an interesting
memoriam. This would also mark the first time the complete canticles
are presented in Singapore.
On 12 May, a collection of Britten’s famous folk songs for solo
voice and piano, as well as some of his more important choral
arrangements such as the Five Flower Songs and the famous Hymn
to Saint Cecilia will be featured. With Britten born on the feast
day of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, this would make a
delightful ending to our little tribute.
