MISC020_UK-bat.indd 2 To improve the reliability of the 9000 Series printheads (9020, 9030 and 9040), Markem-Imaje has implemented the Six Sigma process. The objective of the process is to homogenize the level of performance throughout the entire product line. Based on the American DMAIC method, the process is based on five steps: defining, measuring, analyzing, improving and controlling. In other words, customer needs are defined via surveys; printhead reliability is measured in the field; results are then analyzed; important parameters are improved and finally controlled. Started in April 2007, the implementation process was ended in June 2008 and has allowed Markem-Imaje to increase the overall reliability of its printers. 17/10/08 7:59:13 8)"5μ4/&8 4NBSU%BUF "$PEFS(PFT'BSBOE8JEF The latest arrival in the SmartDate® product line, the 5 128 thermal transfer coder prints large amounts of complex information on flexible packaging films. Its main advantage is the extended print area; up to 128 mm wide and 75 mm long on intermittent filling machines, and up to 200 mm long in a continuous mode. These new properties allow for product packaging personalization with barcodes, multilingual ingredient lists, etc. In addition to the existing SmartDate ® 5 generation coder properties, the new 5 128 coder offers up to 300 dpi print quality. Also, its color touch-screen interface increases operator ease-of-use and its USB connectivity simplifies data changes. Messages can therefore be prepared offline and uploaded to the coder. The increased consumption of dairy products across the world comes from new consumer trends and increasingly uniform eating habits. NEW MARKETS … On emerging markets such as India and China, advances in standard of living have led to increased consumption of animal protein, and in particular, of dairy products. In the developed countries, where the dairy product market is more mature, new consumer trends are driving consumption. New shapes and types of packaging deliver new products targeting health, children, snacking and convenient food sectors. … SUBJECT TO STRONG PROFITABILITY PRESSURE The dairy sector produces huge volumes at high production rates. When it comes to marking and coding, the challenge is to optimize profitability of packaging lines by keeping shutdowns to the strict minimum, especially for low-margin products such as bottles and brick packs of milk. Leading-edge traceability marking maximum information saves time and productivity in MISC020_UK-bat.indd 5 the event of a problem. For by-products, such as cheese and yogurt, the objective is to personalize marking and adapt it to the different types of packaging. The facility, which makes microwave popcorn packaged in bags and buckets on 18 production lines, operates round the clock, 7 days a week. Each package is coded with the following information: the plant and time code, the expiration date and the product description. The type of ink used is very important, as it is imperative that the various codes are not erased or damaged when the bags are put in the microwave. “We were no longer satisfied with our inkjet equipment. We realized we needed new inkjet printers using less consumables, capable of marking 150 popcorn bags a minute and operating as part of a network,” explains the factory’s engineering manager, Scott Gerig. The site managers, already satisfied with Markem coders used for other applications, got in touch with Markem. With Markem and Imaje joining forces, they presented the 9040, a small character inkjet printer that meets ConAgra’s needs. In addition to the high quality and easeof-use of the equipment, the 9040 inkjet printers had an excellent reputation among other ConAgra popcorn facilities which helped convince ConAgra Rensselaer to place an order. $PNQBOZ QSP¾MF Name: ConAgra Rensselaer Location: Rensselaer, Indiana, USA Business: production of microwave popcorn bags and tubs (ACTII and Orville Redenbacher brands) Annual production: 100,000,00 pounds Number of employees: 230 Group: ConAgra Foods, 90 plants across the USA, 25,000 employees, 65 brand names. .BSLFN*NBKFHBWFVTFYDFMMFOUTFSWJDFGSPN UIFJOJUJBMPSEFSSJHIUUISPVHIUPEFMJWFSZBOE JOTUBMMBUJPOPGUIFFRVJQNFOU³ SCOTT GERIG, engineering manager, ConAgra Rensselaer MISC020_UK-bat2.indd 6 20/10/08 16:12:26 5IF.BSLFN*NBKFXPSME & OWJSPONFOU *OL(PFT(SFFO 5IFFYQFSUμT PQJOJPO© 4c#"45*&/."3$&-© 8IFSFWFSQPTTJCMF.BSLFN*NBKFIBTDPNNJUUFEUP FMJNJOBUJOHTVCTUBODFTGSPNJUTDPOTVNBCMFTXIJDIBSF IB[BSEPVTUPUIFPQFSBUPSBOEUIFFOWJSPONFOU ENVIRONMENTAL INKS After bringing its inks and additives into compliance with the RoHS* directive, Markem-Imaje has continued its environmental path, saying “No” to methanol. In the majority of its alcohol-based consumables, methanol has been replaced by isopropanol, a more environmentally friendly and worker-friendly denaturant. This improvement has no impact on ink stability, drying time or marking quality – the new formulation is “plug & play.” PROACTIVE Markem-Imaje anticipates market expectations, working upstream with its suppliers to find new materials that are more environmentally-friendly. Just one year after the creation of the ISO 14001 certification, Imaje was the first group in the sector to obtain this environmental certification. A 4TH PRODUCTION SITE CERTIFIED SOON After Bourg-lès-Valence (France), Gothenburg (Sweden) and Shanghai (China), the site in MISC020_UK-bat.indd 7 Keene (United States) will soon be certified ISO 14001. WHAT IS THE GROUP’S STRATEGY? As industry leader, our role is to steer the market, always looking beyond the regulations in effect and the current customer requirements. We must constantly be innovating in order to bring the best, both to our customers, and with respect to the environment and working conditions. WHAT ARE THE CURRENT TOP PRIORITIES? Control the environmental impacts of our activities – including transportation – by reducing waste, energy consumption and our carbon footprint. We also focus on developing new products with an eco-design approach, looking at improving the recyclability of our printers, formulating more environmentally-friendly inks, and other important aspects. AND IN THE FUTURE? Environmental awareness must become an integral part of our corporate culture. It needs to be an ongoing commitment at every level, in every decision, with involvement and dedication from all members of Markem-Imaje. SHARP GROWTH IN “ENVIRONMENTAL” INKS Production of alcohol-based standard environmental inks increased by 30% between 2006 and 2007. 17/10/08 8:00:30 "RVJDLMPPL 0VUBOE "CPVU April 2008 - Dusseldorf (Germany) Markem-Imaje was at the Interpack show. Well done! At the Interpack trade show, Markem-Imaje displayed a single product line and put forth a single team. The challenge was met especially from a human perspective. As Heike Martetschläger, sales support manager for Europe in charge of organizing the show, emphasized: “The team effort was very important. Everyone worked together to forge one voice. On the stand, former Markem and former Imaje worked with the customers as a single team.” "(&/%" Asia-Pacific Europe China Sino-Pack 3 to 6 March in Guangzhou Thailand Propak Asia 17 to 20 June in Bangkok Taiwan Taipei Pack 23 to 26 June in Taipei TDPQF MISC020_UK-bat.indd 8 Norway Nef-Dagene 3 to 6 February in Lillestrøm Italy Ipack-Ima 24 to 28 March in Milan Spain Hispack 11 to 15 May in Barcelona The Americas United States Westpack 29 to 31 January in Anaheim (CA) Southpack 11 to 12 March in Charlotte (NC) Interphex 17 to 19 March in New York (NY) Interwire 25 to 30 April in Cleveland (OH) .BSLFN*NBKF(SPVQ$VTUPNFS/FXTMFUUFSSVF(BTQBSE.POHF#1 #PVSHMoT7BMFODF$FEFY'SBODF %JSFDUPSPGQVCMJDBUJPO4FSHF,SBM&EJUPSJODIJFG4ZMWBJO&YBSUJFS%FQVUZ&EJUPSJODIJFG$ISJTUJOF#POOFU 8SJUFST#nBUSJDF$PVSUPJT(nSBMEJOF$PVHFU)nMoOF$IBSCPOOJFS(SBQIJDT7nSPOJRVF#nOn1IPUPT(JOLP"HFODF7V (FUUZ*NBHFT%35SBOTMBUJPO"MMJOHVBGS%FTJHOBOEQSPEVDUJPO 5FM .*4$ 17/10/08 8:00:59
