The skills of our Board Members include Business, Construction, Electrical, Telecommunication and Management. Our Board of Directors paves a strategic vision for Cabramatta Golf Club direction and ensures the club success meets the expectations of our members. Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:42 From the GM Well the Clubs Annual General Meeting has been held and the Election of Board Members has taken place. Not quite ”an old fashioned Cabramatta Chainsaw Massacre” as one long serving member described it, but some significant changes none the less. The new committee consists of: President Peter Mahoney, Vice President Ray Wilson, Treasurer Willie Kourieh (UNOPPOSED), Captain Andrew Marsh, Director Brendan Hardy, Director Phil Whybro, Director Dennis Krilich, Director Scott Sullivan, Director John Ward. A healthy 114 Full Playing Members voted which equates to just on a 20% turnout. Whilst congratulating the incoming Board I must thank the previous Captain John Dunkin & the previous Vice President Chris Zouroudis for their tireless efforts over many years. I would like to personally thank each of these gentlemen as both were often my first call option over my 6 ½ years as General Manager and the two that I worked closest with. A number of significant changes have been implemented in the past couple of weeks. * * The first being that the first round of the Club Championships no longer fall on the October long weekend or NRL Grand Final weekend. A & B grade now commence on Saturday 11th October, this is followed by C Grade on Sunday 12th October. The second significant change is that it is now not compulsory to be a Director to manage one of our representative teams. Thus as the appropriate representative eason approaches the Club will call for interested applicants. For members who like following our Monthly Financial Statement displayed each month, I am pleased to advise that after four months of this financial year ( April 2014 thru July 2014 ) the Club is currently up $135,081 on the corresponding period last year, this is attributed to income being up $93,967 and expenses being down $42,714. We all hope this trend can continue for the remaining eight months, fingers crossed. When we talk Club Championships we also start talking Presentation Night, this date is set down for Saturday 29th November. The entertainment will be great and I would also like to remind you that on that night we conduct both the Men’s and Ladies Presentations and you can’t beat the price…. ”free for member & partner”, so make sure you book!!! Until next month, swing slow! Bill Basan General Manager 2 Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:42 From the Captain Hello Fellow Golfers Firstly I would like to acknowledge John Dunkin for his efforts for the past 9 years as Club Captain. Thank you John. As your newly elected Club Captain I would like to advise that Brendan Hardy will be the club’s Vice Captain. I would also like to congratulate our new Board of Directors for the 2014/16 season and I look forward to working together. The Eric Apperly Pennant team has represented Cabra with pride but were unfortunate in not progressing to the next stage. Well done Boys! The Warren and Gibson Trophy team likewise failed to make it to the final this year On behalf of the club and myself I would like to congratulate Geoff Gerard and Ed Sulkowicz in representing Cabra at the 2014 State Men’s Fourball Championships held 7 th – 10th October at Bonville Golf Club and Barry & Gaynor Maloney representing Cabra at the 2014 State Mixed Fourball Championships. Good luck to all and do Cabra proud. There has been a change of date to the start of the Club Championships. It will start 1 week after the long weekend in October . Round 1 Round 1 A&B Grades C Grade 11th October 2014 12th October 2014 Round 2 Round 2 A&B Grades C Grade 18th October 2014 19th October 2014 Round 3 Round 4 A, B & C Grades A, B & C Grades 25th October 2014 26th October 2014 Top 32 seeded - from each grade Top 16 seeded - from each grade All competitors are eligible to complete in the 4 rounds. (There is NO cut) Good Luck to all Due to a lack of Juniors there will be no Encourage Shield this year which is unfortunate. There is a voluntary working bee on the course on the 16th September starting at 12pm. Anyone who can spare an afternoon come on down , many hands make light work for all. We will be focusing on picking up sticks on the course. All to meet at the greenkeepers shed at 12pm, there will be a BBQ & drinks at the shed afterwards. Look forward to seeing everybody around the club, so come up and say good day. Andrew Marsh Captain 3 Hi all, Welcome to spring! As we move into the warmer periods I would like you to take stock of the clothing you wear on the course. I notice that a lot of golfers are wearing old shirts not appropriate to the months ahead. I invite you to take a good look around the pro shop in the coming months and check out the Amazing materials now used to make golf clothing. We do our best to hunt down the best deals for our members to get the best names in golf into our shop so you won’t pay anywhere near the retail price elsewhere. So have a look at your favorite golf shirt and compare it to what we have for you in the shop, I promise your golf will be far more comfortable. Along the same lines, check your grips. As it gets warmer and your hands start to sweat, check to see if your grips have hardened, if they have its time to regrip. We have grips to try in different thicknesses from $10 a club fitted professionally and backed up by warranty. We back all of our work to be done quickly and correctly, don’t trust a backyard hack that is buying cheap copies off the net to fit your clubs. We have also been fitting a number of fat putter grips of late. The advantage of having a fatter grip when putting is it stops your hands from overworking in the stroke, our Wynn pro grips will change the way you put, starting at $24.95. We also have the standard putting grips from $15, if you come in 15 minutes before your tee time we can have one ready before you go! 4 Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:42 The new club in the shop already purchased by some of our customers is the G30 ping model. We have demo product available but be warned it’s a major improvement for golf club engineering and is hard to give back! I have been testing the product and I can tell you it is putting yards on my drives (I can now hit it 190!) so if it can help me I suggest you try it. We have available for demo at the moment not only the new metals but also, ping karsten irons graph, ping g30 reg steel, ping I 25 stiff steel. Taylor made sldr irons in reg steel, Titleist ap1 steel reg and Titleist ap2 irons. All in a full set for you to try on your course not into a net in a shop! Lesson time? I now do lessons at three locations to suit my clients. Cabramatta G.C. when possible, Fairfield Golf Course driving range and Sharks driving range. When you have the time I’ll make the time to suit you. Give it a go you might be surprised that I don’t just sell coke and mars bars for a career! Over the years I have been to P.G.A coaching seminars by the likes of Chuck Cook, Butch Harmon, Hank Haney, Ian Triggs and many more. I have a lot of knowledge on the golf swing from listening to great teachers such as these and blended it with my own philosophies to help you improve your golf. I always look forward to new challenges so if you think you have the unfixable slice give me a go. Junior golf, I have started to take the first small steps in growing our junior base again. I have allocated half an hour every Saturday from 10-10.30 at Fairfield driving range, to teach and greet all new comers, so if you child or grandchild would like to learn how to swing a club, come down. I teach the kids for free but you may need to buy balls for the range. If you have any old clubs you would like me to cut down for your kids bring them in and I will do them for free with a new grip until grip stocks last. Congratulations to all who have given their time to be appointed to the Board for the next two years, I know together we can move forward and keep improving our club. All the best in golfing, Matt and the pro shop staff. 5 News from the Green Staff September is an exciting time of year for us, as we start to see the course change after winter, as it blossoms into spring and summer. This is, as always our time to renovate greens and prepare them for the season ahead. We have hollow tined greens with a 16mm tine, at 50mm spacing and to a depth of 60mm. This relieves the compaction created through general play, cutting and rolling. We then top dress with sand, and rub this in, with the goal being to fill the holes and leave a minimal amount of sand on the surface. The sand filled cores create channels for the roots to penetrate deeper than otherwise. We were lucky enough to loan a broom that is relatively new to the industry. The advantage of the broom is that it fills the core holes with sand and at the same time brushes the sand out of the grass canopy, leaving minimal sand on the green surface, and it is also very gentle on the turf which allows the greens to recover from the operation more quickly. Now is the time for us to promote the best root system possible, and in doing so, allow the greens to survive the harsh, hot conditions from December to March. This process is a key factor in our preparations for summer and maintaining the best possible greens surface we can, week after week. I would also like to take the opportunity, from not only myself, but on behalf of all of my staff, to thank John Dunkin for his time and efforts in working together with us on improving not only the golf course but our facilities and machinery, in his time as Captain. My first 3 years as Course Superintendent have been very enjoyable and John has been a big part of that. The golf course is progressing well in the right direction, and I’m sure we can continue to improve and provide the best facilities in this region. Steve Kazurinsky Course Superintendent. If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death. ~Sam Snead 6 Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:42 Rules questions (see below for correct answers) 1. Debbie Carrier Associates President 10 From the Archives 1957—1958 President………… E. N. Brodie Captain ………… R. M. Watson This year the Club recorded its second largest operating surplus in it’s history with an annual result of £3,164. This was the result of increases across most revenue items, but particularly Public Green fees which increased £1,500. An increased overdraft has been arranged to enable extensions to be carried out to the clubhouse. Tenders were accepted and work would commence early in the next financial period. The introduction of water restrictions limited watering of greens to hand watering at very restricted hours. Because of the water tank installed in 1956 with it the club’s ability to obtain supplies from Cabramatta Creek, the course came through the period better than most. The 1957 Pennant Team was successful in winning it’s Division, but were beaten by Bankstown in the semi-final. Bankstown went on to win the pennant. Barry Warren won the Australian Amateur Championship. He defeated Bruce Devlin in the final. What can I do for you? Is there a problem?' 'Um, I am just calling to advise you, Senor Rod, that your parrot, he is dead' 'My parrot? Dead? The one that won the International competition?' 'Si, Senor, that's the one.' 'Damn! That's a pity! I spent a small fortune on that bird. What did he die from?' 'From eating the rotten meat, Senor Rod.' 'Rotten meat? Who the hell fed him rotten meat?' 'Nobody, Senor. He ate the meat of the dead horse.' 'Dead horse? What dead horse?' 'The thoroughbred, Senor Rod.' 'My prize thoroughbred is dead?' 'Yes Senor Rod, he died from all that work pulling the water cart.' 'Are you insane?? What water cart?' 'The one we used to put out the fire, Senor.' 'Good Lord!! What fire are you talking about, man??' 'The one at your house, Senor! A candle fell and the curtains caught on fire.' 'What the hell?? Are you saying that my mansion is destroyed because of a candle? !!' 'Yes, Senor Rod.' 'But there's electricity at the house! What was the candle for?' 'For the funeral, Senor Rod.' 'WHAT BLOODY FUNERAL??!!' 'Your wife's, Senor Rod', she showed up very late one night and I thought she was a thief, so I hit her with your new tailor-made R580 XD golf club.' Congratulations to Harrison Glenday who won the Overall and Division 2 Nett Cameron Glenday won the Division 1 nett 13 Barry & Gaynor Maloney 14 Barry & Gaynor Maloney represented Cabramatta in the State Final of the Keno NSW Mixed Fourball Championship which was conducted at Bonville Golf Resort during 9 – 12 September. Bonville is located on the Mid North Coast of NSW, just south of Coffs Harbour These finals were contested between 40 pairs - 20 from Sydney Metropolitan, & 20 from the Country Areas of NSW. To qualify, Barry & Gaynor won a mixed event at Cabramatta last February, and then had to finish in the top 20, in a game against some 60 other teams from the Sydney Area in July. Having achieved this they were entitled to compete at Bonville, where they were provided with:* 3 nights’ accommodation, including breakfast. * 2 rounds of Golf at Bonville – i.e.: the 36 hole competition of the Final. * A welcome barbeque dinner, (including drinks), on the first night – & here they were provided complimentary shirts & caps. * A three-course presentation dinner, (again with drinks included), following the final round. During the welcome presentation the contestants were rightfully advised by the hosts, that the prize for being in the tournament was not winning the final event, but just qualifying – probably a true statement, as having the opportunity of playing on the Bonville course, and meeting people from other clubs provides some insight as to problems or solutions they have in the management of their course Bonville is a beautiful, but testing course – the fourball winners finished with a 36 hole score of 83 points – Barry & Gaynor were 7th – their score 77. Keno also hold a Members fourball event at Bonville – Geoff Gerard & Ed Sulkowicz have be successful in reaching the finals & will be attending in October. We will probably be hearing stories of the exploits soon after. Members should keep their eye opened for the 2015 qualifying events, the three days at Bonville is a wonderful experience, but note – you do have to be over 18 years of age to be eligible. 15 See Matt in the Pro shop for getting an entry to this great day on the 24th October 16 Issue No:42 Cabramatta Confidential Cabramatta Golf Club PO Box 8063 Mt Pritchard NSW 2170 Club Phone: 02-96028283 Pro shop 02-96021516 Fax: 02-96013216 E-mail: [email protected] Cabra Confidential Editor [email protected] www.cabragolf.com.au 17
