The committee is dedicated to modernizing the parks for children, grandchildren and visitors to the community. It is believed that the current equipment is over thirty years old. Although it is safe, it looks worn and does not encourage children to play on it. The city has parameters in which they must abide, for example, they can sandblast the merry go round and repaint it; however, it has been confirmed that equipment, such as swing-sets and slides, cannot be moved around on city property, as once it is moved - it can no longer be insured. New equipment will provide children, for years to come, with the opportunity to grow stronger and healthier when engaged in play activity. The two parks located on South Miles and North Walnut are divided by Highway 23. Most of the grade school children are not allowed to cross the highway, so for safety reasons it is important to upgrade both parks. Volunteers will be relied on throughout 2016/2017 to reach the goal. One plan in the works is scheduled for June 11, in correlation with Fremont’s City-Wide Garage Sales; on this day, the community center will be the site of a garage sale to raise money for the Fremont Playground Project (prior to this date, donations for this cause can be brought to City hall between 9:30-3:00, M-F). Shoppers can also take a break and get lunch at Fremont’s Community Center on June 11, with proceeds going to the Fremont Playground Project! The committee’s goal is to raise $75,000.00. In addition to fundraisers, monies will need to be obtained through grants and donations. Sponsors will be sent a receipt for donations. If you can help, know someone who can, or would like more information on the Fremont Playground Rehabilitation Project, please call 641-933-4317, or contact - Fremont Playground Committee, P.O. On Friday the 11th, both alumni and chapter members were present to help set up and prep for the auction. The members helped people unload, tag, and park their machinery, implements, and other items. The alumni helped greatly with check-in and other ways to keep us organized. On Saturday the 12th, everyone prepared for what the day might bring; we were grateful that the weather held up. We had a huge turnout of about 380 people present at the auction that day, with an estimated amount of about 500 items to be sold. This year we had twice as much consigned, as the years before. TJ Sinnif quoted, “I thought the sale went pretty well. We had a lot of people and a lot of equipment. I noticed a lot of people looked very interested in all of our items. I am very pleased with how the sale went.” The auction would not have been as organized, if it weren’t for the Doyle family. Each year they help us extremely, by keeping all the records organized. Justin Doyle took charge with setup, and on auction day, he also took in all the consignment. The Sinnif Auction Services and Al Martin Real Estate also played a big part in auctioning all items off. Also thanks to Randy Sieren and Mike Stewart for helping. Current Chapter President Tayler Jones stated “The sale went really well, many people showed up and it was very, very organized. We have the Doyle’s to thank for that, especially Justin Doyle; he put this whole thing together.” We would like to thank all of the consigners and people who have purchased items this year. Also a special thanks to the Doyle Family, entire FFA Alumni Chapter, and Burl and Deb Newell. Ryan Richmond and Alan Angle checking consigners tickets as they leave. Egg Hiding at Homestead ~Submitted by FFA Reporters On March 24th, a few FFA students traveled to Homestead, a retirement home in Oskaloosa, to hide eggs for the children and grandchildren of the employees and residents. The students hid eggs down every hallway, the café, the game area, library, and the living area. The hunt took place later that evening. The residents in the home seemed very pleased to see young members getting involved in their community. Sandy Roe stated “It’s great to see all these kids here preparing for the hunt, because we enjoy talking to and watching other children enjoy the Easter festivities.” As the kids walked around, they were greeted with smiles and pleasantries from the staff and people staying there. The treats hidden included decorated eggs, eggs with candy inside, and special prize eggs. There was alot of help and things were completed quickly. “I had a lot of fun at this event, and really liked interacting with the residents at the home,” said member Morgan Wells. It was a wonderful experience and got the FFA members more involved in their surrounding communities. On Saturday, March 5, the Junior High Rocket Archery Team qualified for national competition in Louisville, Kentucky! How exciting for these young archers who also represented EddyvilleBlakesburg-Fremont School at the state qualifiers and ended their regular season, with a third place finish at the 2016 NASP Iowa State Championships. This will be the second consecutive year at National Competition. In addition to sending a team to 2015 Nationals, EBF was also represented at World Championships by archer Alex Brittain. It would be an honor to be seen at World again this year. This team achieved some personal best scores this year, as they’ve developed their shooting skills over the last four years. Several of them began archery when the team was first started and have dedicated themselves to a sport that isn’t a typical school sport, but rather an individual commitment that ultimately leads to a team reward. The coaches are positive that these kids will have a great experience that they’ll never forget, as they take these kids to a bigger, more competitive archery arena. Donations are being accepted to help fund the trip scheduled for May 12-14. Donations will be used for gas, hotel, entrance fees and miscellaneous travel expenses; money will be used wisely and the archers will be supported fully throughout this trip. Monies left over will be saved for next year’s archery season. Donation levels: Platinum - $100; Gold - $50; Bronze - $25. These donations will be mentioned on the back of the National t-shirts. You can specify your personal name or a business name. Cash or checks are accepted. If you would like to claim this donation on your tax return, you may use the following information: Eddyville Community Foundation, Inc., DDA #645543, Tax ID 42-1364386. Horticulture Class Visits Tassel Ridge Winery Written by reporters: Adlynn Eveland, Morgan Wells, & Randie Richmond March 3rd was a busy day for the EBF horticulture class. They traveled to Tassel Ridge Winery in Leighton, where they were given a tour. The students learned many things, including the types of grapes grown and where they are located in the vineyard. After that, everyone went through the "Tank Farm", or the facility tour, and were shown the process of making wine. Employees at Tassel Ridge have to take steps from growing yeast in large tanks, to assembling bottles by filling and labeling them. While on the trip, the students had a marketing and sales discussion with their guide to understand what kinds of skills they need to possess in an agricultural business. To top off the tour, the kids got to relax over some grape juice and local cheese taste-testing. They all seemed to have had a great time on the trip. “Tassel Ridge is a very neat business and helped educate us on how much work it takes to have a successful business,” stated Tayler Jones. Before the class made their way back to the school, they stopped at Stam's Greenhouse. Different plant species were purchased there to start the new project the students were preparing. Once these were brought back, they then created their terrariums by using a large glass jar and their plants. It was a great experience for all of them, as they could see local agricultural operations in action, and possibly get a few future career ideas. Eight students from the EBF horticulture class toured Tassel Ridge winery . 6 District Nurse: Erin Hynick By Kathy Street Getting to know all of the children of the district is Mrs. Erin Hynick. In her new position as the school nurse, Erin is traveling among the buildings, taking care of student needs and record-keeping. Mrs. Hynick lives in Eddyville, with her husband Darin, and two year old daughter, Jessie. This family is anticipating the arrival of their new baby at the end of May. In her home life, Erin enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, golfing with her husband, and cheering for the Cyclones. Carroll, Iowa is where Erin grew up and graduated from high school. She went on to Iowa State and then Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, where she attended nursing school. After becoming a Registered Nurse (RN), she obtained her BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from Iowa Wesleyan. She has been employed with both Ottumwa Regional and Pella Regional Clinic, and her work experience has included ER, Med Surgery Floor, and clinic work. She began working for Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Community School District on February 1, 2016. Her duties include: management of immunization and health records, health plans for students with medical issues, managing medication administration, day-to-day needs of students, keeping the staff up-to-date on pertinent information, and maintaining rapport with the building secretaries who oversee student needs in her absence. She follows a weekly schedule between the district buildings, with Mondays being at Fremont, Tuesdays and Thursdays at Eddyville Elementary, Wednesdays at the high school, and Fridays at Blakesburg. When the opening arose for the EBF District, Mrs. Hynick liked the idea of working in her home community, where her own children will be going to school. Health promotion/education have been some of Erin’s favorite aspects of nursing, thus the teaching side of working with a school district was also appealing. Now that she is here, she finds herself appreciating time spent with and talking to children as they tell about their day. “I am really happy to be here,” Erin states. Currently, she has been orienting herself, getting to know others, and evaluating records. “I am looking forward to next year and doing what I can to help everybody.” Boys’ Basketball Letter Winners The Rocket Boys’ Basketball Team held their awards banquet recently with Coach Travis Stout announcing letter winners as follows: Derek Walker, Peyton Walker, KJ McCrea, Clay Lathen, Jordan Hawk, Trey Moore, Jordan Leffler, Brady Davis, Jaden Scott, Wyatt Klyn, Evan Heinle, Gabe Larkin, Ryan Adams, Jake Taylor. Bands qualify for championships by placing 1st or 2nd at their district jazz festivals or by winning at an independent jazz festival and placing ahead of an automatic qualifier. Although the band didn’t make the trophy class at championships, this has been a great year for the band. Developed by Iowa Student Loan®, the College Funding Forecaster helps students calculate estimated costs, funding gaps and potential student debt. The estimated total cost of college provided in the tool is based on information found in an award packet, which typically only provides financial aid information for one school year, outside scholarships and grants, and family contributions. Created to help students consider how costs, aid and their own contributions will change over the course of their college career, the tool provides users with informational tips to reduce costs and potential debt based on personal circumstances. “Most people wouldn’t order a four-course meal only knowing the price of the appetizer, yet that’s how many families treat the process of financing college,” said Steve McCullough, president and CEO of Iowa Student Loan. “The College Funding Forecaster uses information found in the financial aid award packet provided annually by colleges, and other financial information unique to the student to calculate an estimated college cost for four years. Using results generated by the tool, families have the opportunity to discuss funding options and create a plan for financing the entire degree process.” The College Funding Forecaster is part of a suite of smart borrowing tools offered by Iowa Student Loan on its website, www.IowaStudentLoan.org. Other tools include Student Loan Game PlanSM and ROCI Reality Check and Tool. Since 2010, Student Loan Game Plan has been helping students understand the effects of borrowing too much for college. ROCI Reality Check provides information about the return on college investment, or ROCI, students can expect from degrees in specific majors. Student Loan Game Plan and ROCI Reality Check are required aspects of all Iowa Student Loan scholarship and giveaway program registrations. Student Loan Game Plan is also a required component of any Iowa Student Loan private student loan application. During the past three years, use of Student Loan Game Plan within loan applications has helped more than 1,500 applicants reduce their intended loan amount by approximately $5 million. “Our mission is to provide students and families with the resources necessary to succeed in postsecondary education,” said McCullough. “By developing these smart borrowing tools that encourage students to take a broader view of their college plans, explore their financing options and seek additional methods for funding their education, such as working part-time, we hope they can become less reliant on student loans. If student loans are necessary, these tools will have provided ways for the student to graduate with a manageable amount of student debt.” Learn More: To access the College Funding Forecaster, have your award letter ready and visit www.IowaStudentLoan.org/Forecaster.
