School District News May 8, 2014 ~ Vol. 9, Issue 17 Visit Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Community School’s Website at: www.rocketsk12.org From the desk of Dr. Dean A. Cook April 23, 2014 Update Regarding Facilities Upgrades This is the first of many updates which I plan on featuring in The Rocket to highlight the planned facilities’ upgrades. Over the past ten years, we have updated our concession stands, restrooms, and dugouts, as well as installed new lighting and sound systems on all of the athletic fields. All of the buildings have had changes made to them, with the exception of the high school. The Blakesburg elementary building has had work completed on the windows and interior, which has provided for an attractive, safe, and efficient learning environment. The Eddyville elementary building has had new carpet installed (approximately eight years ago), a new roof replaced over the gym, painting of the interior, and lockers repainted. The Fremont elementary building has had new air units installed and had a roof replacement. The next building which is slated for upgrades is the junior-senior high school building. Over the next several years, the identified upgrades include replacing the gym floor, upgrading the lighting, and installing new windows and exterior doors/entrances. In order to complete these necessary upgrades, I am recommending the use of our SAVE funds (the 1 cent sales tax) which will allow the Board of Education flexibility in completing the projects over the next ten years, so as to keep within the natural occurring funding that comes into the district - which eliminates the need to consider other funding mechanisms that might have raised taxes. The first priority for the district will be to make our buildings as safe as possible for students. This means reconfiguring our building entrances for a safer entrance into each building and installing classroom doors which lock from the inside. There will be much discussion and prioritization of projects yet to come, but this is a great start to keeping our school campuses safe, as well as providing for attractive and efficient learning environments for many years to come. (more photos next page) Summer Reading Program to Offer Opportunity to Advance Reading Skills In the area of reading curriculum, we are refocusing the summer reading program on K-3 literacy and strengthening the foundational skills some students have missed throughout their education. Research has been very compelling regarding the importance of this particular age group of students, and the need to be on target for mastering the content identified at each grade level. Researchers have found that if children are reading at grade level by the time they leave third grade, they will continue to be a strong reader the rest of their educational years and beyond. That is the reason we are focusing on students who are not yet proficient in reading at grade level in Kindergarten through third grade. This summer we are offering a reading program for those students who are in need of some additional direct and specific instruction to build foundational skills necessary to be successful readers. They will be invited to attend the summer reading program and work with certified teachers to catch up on foundational skills and also combat the summer loss which often takes place with students who are not yet reading at grade level. If you are contacted by your child’s teacher and the summer reading teachers, please consider making the commitment to send your child to summer reading, as it will help them build strong reading skills and bridge that summer reading loss which we know occurs. If you have any questions about the summer reading program, contact your child’s teacher and ask if your child qualifies for the summer reading program. Farm Ag Day Enjoyed by Fremont Students! ~ Letter and Photos by Lindy Hammes, 3rd Grade Teacher, Fremont Elementary The Fremont Elementary third graders went to Farm Ag Day on April 11th, 2014. We made two stops to learn about and enjoy farm life. Our first stop was at the Jay and Phyllis Fox peacock farm, where we enjoyed watching and learning about their peacocks. Mrs. Fox shared three different colors of peacocks - white, opal and India Blue. We learned that the male is the most colorful and that he loses his long tail feathers every year during June and July. After this stop we were off to the Jim Jager Farm where we were served lunch by the Mahaska Co. Cattle Association. From there, we started our afternoon learning about the many different things that the farm has to offer. We learned many things from cows to pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, honey bees, and soybeans. The Vet (from Mahaska Veterinary Clinic) was there to explain how he helps sick animals, and Rural Water taught us about the safety of water and demonstrated how some chemicals can keep us safe from bacteria. We also spent time working on vehicle safety, which included four wheeler, gravity flow wagons and tractors. As one can imagine, the pig bus was a great hit. We have been writing about our favorite station, and several of my students have written that the pigs were their favorite; I think that getting to hold a baby pig was the key. We had a great day learning from everyone involved. Thank you to all who took time from their busy schedule to teach us the important things farms do for us. 4 Congrats To the Class Of 2014! Kathy Street Rocket Chorale Travels to Kansas City Article submitted by Christopher Ellerston During the weekend of April 12-13, twenty of the twenty-five members of the EBF Rocket Chorale (see below) traveled to Kansas City, MO. While there, they visited the Kansas City Zoo, enjoyed pizza and the pool at their hotel, and spent Sunday at Worlds of Fun. At Worlds of Fun they participated in the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music. They performed two selections for three college professors and composers in preparation for large group contest in May. They did a marvelous job singing, eliciting this response from Bradley Ellingboe, American composer and college professor: "I'm happily surprised at the sound you are able to get from, not a very big choir, but it's a rich, robust sound!" The choir performance can be heard in the choral archives at www.ebfchoir.weebly.com , with pictures from the trip, as well. Due to torrential storms, the students returned early but had a successful and enjoyable weekend. The Rocket Chorale will present its final concert of the year, alongside the band on May 6. 9 Thank You Conne! The staff surprised Conne Replogle with a potluck, flowers, and gifts in honor of Administrative Assistant Day. These were just small tokens of our great appreciation for everything she does for the students and staff at BAC. ~ Submitted by Sheryl Friedman Two Fremont residents selected for Indian Hills Community College Academy 4/21/14 OTTUMWA, IOWA --- Tyler Archer (pictured) and Hayley McKay, both of Fremont, have been inducted into the Academy at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. Could it be that every young woman or girl’s fancy turns to fluffy, billowing, sleek or shimmering dresses when spring arrives? Even decades-old dresses worn at prom, and beautiful wedding dresses have that unique quality of pretty colors, special fabric and brocade accents. Come to the Eddyville Historical Museum, beginning May 14, and view some of the dresses that will be on display. You will see the history of the different times unfold with the different fabrics used. You will be aware of how the Depression, and the effects that the World Wars and the Korean Conflict had, not only on the lives and times of the young people, but also the types of material and dresses that were available. Hours for the display will be: Wednesdays May 14th and May 21st, 1:005:00pm, and Saturdays May 17th and May 24th, 9:00 am-12:00 pm. DES MOINES – Iowa’s Blank Park Zoo is teaming up with 10 organizations to introduce Plant.Grow.Fly., a conservation initiative to bring back native pollinators. This project encourages community members to plant pollinator habitat in yards, schools and businesses. This initiative is backed by several organizations including: Iowa State University’s Reiman Gardens, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Science Center of Iowa, Drake University, Polk County Conservation, Warren County Conservation, Madison County Conservation, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and DMACC West Campus as well as a national program, Monarch Joint Venture. “One-third of our global food supply depends on pollinators and much of our world's biodiversity relies on the services they provide. Pollinators, like butterflies and bees, are declining at an alarming rate in our rapidly changing environment,” said Jessie Lowry, Blank Park Zoo’s Conservation Coordinator. Lowry said the Plant.Grow.Fly. project is developing a gardening how-to guide that can be found at www.plantgrowfly.com. “Insects are an integral part of our environment, making more resources available will help to insure the survival of these amazing animals,” said Nathan Brockman, Butterfly Wing Curator at Reiman Gardens. “Using region-specific garden recipes, you can plant the flowers and grasses that benefit our local species the most,” said Lowry. “We believe that no effort is too small and that each of us can do our part to preserve the biodiversity around us - just by planning gardens in our yards.” Sports Physicals at Eddyville Clinic during July and August for just $25. The adage holds true once again for the students at EBF Horticulture class this year. The greenhouse suffered a power failure back in January, of roughly five hours. Over 95% of the house plants that were in the greenhouse died, due to cold temperatures. Fortunately, all the nasty horticultural insects that enjoy the warm climate perished as well. This allowed Ag instructor Patrick Powers to start with a clean slate. This year’s growing season started out extremely cold. Powers used his experience of 31 years to start the flowers in the school’s ag classroom where they had a southern exposure to the sun. Seed germination was fantastic and the kids were able to transplant the flowers successfully into the 6 packs. The marigold is known to be a hardy plant, and it provided its worth once again this late winter into early spring; three different varieties have been grown this year which include Giants and Petite Cracker Jacks. The class also had the opportunity to raise wave petunias, as well as some peppers and tomato varieties. The greenhouse is located on the south side of the EBF HS campus. Hours are during the school day from 8-3:30 or by appointment, through contact with Mr. Powers. FFA member Mitchel Scholtus indicated the class gives kids a chance to experience new opportunities in school. “I really enjoyed watching the plant grow and how it evolves from a seed, to a young seedling and then a mature plant that will be sold. I was surprised that it really doesn’t take that long for them to grow to selling size,” Scholtus said. Other FFA members voiced their opinions as well. Ethan Jensen mentioned that he was impressed with himself in how many seeds germinated from his packets. “I never really had planted a garden or flowers before. I was kinda surprised how many seeds actually grew from the flat I had planted,” Jensen said. Ag Ed and FFA allows students to learn skills by doing hands on activities. Students can easily utilize these flowers as part of their Supervised Agricultural Experience(SAE) program and take them to the Iowa State Fair in August.
