Annual Report - Women`s Centre of Calgary
Annual Report 2014 Making a Difference The Women’s Centre gathers feedback from women who use the Centre, volunteers, board members, and staff to inform our work. Feedback was collected throughout the year using a variety of tools. In 2014, we collected input from more than 1,300 women. Here are some of our indicators of success: • • • • • 96% of women reported feeling safe at the Women’s Centre 89% of women reported receiving the support needed when they needed it 89% of women reported feeling at home or a sense of belonging 81% of women reported increasing their community involvement 75% of women reported they knew more about women’s issues In 2014, we responded to: • 65,927 contacts from women: 69% were made in person and 31% by phone and email. Different services were provided to women at the Centre an average of 184 times every day. In addition, women phoned or emailed the Centre 82 times every day. In 2014, we served a diverse community of women: 32% were Aboriginal, First Nations, Inuit or Métis 25% were immigrants or refugees 9% were visible minorities 6% were lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer Many of us experienced the following challenges: 60% were dealing with poverty 36% had a chronic health issue such as mental health, disability, or chronic disease 32% were single mothers 17% were in a violent relationship, or had been previously 2 A New Home and New Possibilities New spaces bring new opportunities, and new responsibilities. Thanks to the amazing support of individuals and businesses from across Calgary, the Women’s Centre was able to open shiny new double doors last April. The Centre is bright, open, and spacious. The changes we felt were immediate. Women have come to the Centre seeking ways to connect with others in their community in greater numbers than ever before. For the very first time, more women came to learn new skills and socialize than to receive direct assistance. This isn’t to say that fewer women are coming in the door for assistance or social issues work. After being closed for nearly six weeks during the move, the last half of the year showed a marked increase of 28% over the same period in 2013. Women’s Centre programming revolves around three areas of work: Connect with Others, Get Assistance, and Work for Change. We offer women the opportunity to socialize and combat isolation by offering over 100 free workshops every year, and by creating a safe space that is accessible. We provide assistance There was a full house for our first Annual General Meeting in the new Women’s Centre space. through front-line services like emergency food hampers, personal care items, referrals, peer support and services such as tax preparation, and Our Mission: Every woman’s place for support, connections and community. legal advice.Volunteers helped women receive personal items such as toothpaste, shampoo and sanitary supplies 8,945 times in 2014, creating an even larger demand for donations of personal care items. Last but not least, we work to educate and advocate on policy and systemic changes that will better the lives of women in our community. In the three areas, an average of 266 contacts are made on a daily basis. Experience tells us that we create the most impact when women can access all three. Many women first come to the Centre to ask for assistance. As their confidence builds and they get to know other women, these same women begin to participate in workshops or volunteer around the Centre. Some may even facilitate a workshop. Volunteers sign up to do peer support and later access services like Legal Advice, or participate in social issues work. The Centre provides an atmosphere where all women are encouraged to participate in all areas of our work, thus empowering women to have new experiences. This builds a stronger, more vibrant community. Thanks to the new space, these services, workshops and committee meetings can all happen at the same time. We are able to focus on our Community Capacity Building Peer Model, and recognize the strengths and experiences of all women. Women can receive help as needed, and give back as they are able. Our goal is to provide a space where women can help other women and build strong communities. This past year has been a great step in accomplishing that. Our Vision: Women supporting communities, communities supporting women. 2014 Financials 344,203 66,399 18,424 5,799 5,155 13,608 2,224 2,079 -417 1,901 --2,655 1,790 1,969 -2,185 761,387 $-269,580 258,451 121,718 76,289 19,110 16,230 528,013 394,490 72,994 -13,874 10,649 -6,518 6,722 3,920 5,746 2,020 4,187 3,839 683 1,412 585 374 -- 432,272 432,272 ------- -- 44,569 20,105 12,136 397 2,739 751 -981 734 2,778 495 1,310 1,016 399 115 180 253 180 -- 44,569 ---44,569 ---- AB Law Foundation 196,829 1,041,390 758,798 151,529 18,821 22,412 16,555 13,608 9,723 9,535 6,698 6,658 5,231 5,203 4,238 3,453 3,382 2,807 554 2,185 1,238,219 432,272 269,580 258,451 166,287 76,289 19,110 16,230 2014 175,045 968,376 757,647 71,932 4,945 23,299 23,928 16,661 12,972 3,914 7,582 6,296 8,162 5,560 415 1,713 2,663 18,470 126 2,091 1,143,421 432,272 214,768 262,072 140,773 56,335 9,993 27,208 2013 FCSS Fund 468,808 (95,741) Operating Fund 292,570 Statement of Operations for the Year Ended December 31, 2014 Revenue City of Calgary Family and Community Support Services Donations United Way of Calgary Grants Casino Interest income Fundraising Expenses Salaries, wages and benefits Rent and maintenance Amortization Office supplies Professional fees Emergency fund Utilities Volunteer appreciation Equipment and software Insurance Printing Training Planning Dues and memberships Interest and bank charges Travel Advertising and promotion Fundraising Excess (deficiency) of revenue over expenses Donations and fundraising dollars raised in the current year are budgeted in the following year. Thanks to funding from The Calgary Foundation, we were able to take on a unique community engagement project to connect with BridgelandRiverside, Renfrew and Crescent Heights in 2014. Not long after settling into the new space, we organized a group of volunteers who started door knocking, giving presentations, writing articles for community newsletters and hosting events. Lucinda Proulx, a regular Monday night peer support volunteer, joined the team. She went door-to-door meeting community members and set up a lemonade stand in front of the Centre. “We wanted to go into communities around the Women’s Centre and get the word out,” she says. “I think what struck me the most was how many women feel secluded in their homes. Disconnected. They didn’t know there were free resources, like free yoga classes in their neighbourhood. Women are looking for outlets for engagement.” We wanted to strengthen existing relationships, build new ones, and learn about the community around us. We also wanted to learn about what women are experiencing in their neighbourhoods and what they hope to see at the Centre. We learned a lot. Women told us about sexism in male-dominated Sarah, Lucinda, Jessica and Dorothy gear up for door knocking. industries, stereotypes about women, concerns about safety when walking alone at night, street harassment, and poverty. Common concerns were affordable housing, abuse, mental health concerns, the wage gap, and affordable child care. Many women felt that the Women’s Centre has a role to play in addressing these issues, and we agree. Barriers like transportation and child care prevent women from coming to the Centre, and we’re now working to address these issues. “ ” Every day I walked away with a different story and a different connection. Women asked for more workshops on self-defense, mechanics, drumming, finances, painting and cooking – and we listened. Thanks to the new space, we’ve been able to host more workshops in 2014 than 2013, even with six weeks of closure. Through the project, we were able to connect with 400 people, meet dozens of community partner groups, give 40 tours, and host 20 presentations and meetings. Women, who had never been to the Centre before, signed up to be peer support volunteers, help out at events and sit on committees. We knew a safe, welcoming space was critical to building a community. What we underestimated was how much our old space publicly defined the Women’s Centre. The community engagement project highlighted just how much more potential we have thanks to this new space. Lucinda has plans to set up another lemonade stand during the summer. “We had so many conversations. Every day I walked away with a different story and a different connection.” Get Assistance We completed 4,244 basic needs referrals to other community programs. We provided women with food, personal supplies or bus tickets 8,945 times. Connect With Others We provided 116 workshops with 905 total attendees. Women came to groups such as Community Kitchen and Practice English 550 times. Work For Change Women received services such as legal advice, tax preparation, and ID clinics 703 times. Women came to the Centre to use computers, office equipment and phones 10,653 times. Women dropped in to the Centre to connect with others and build community 11,996 times. We made 24,475 peer support, information and follow-up contacts. We have done 25 presentations on women, poverty, and diversity with 261 women. 4 letters were sent and/or presented to policy makers. There are 33 volunteer members of the Social Issues Commitee. We participated in 5 coalitions involving 28 partner organizations.
