Red Fox
(Vulpes vulpes)
Weight: 5 kg
($5,000-$25,000)
Length: 1 m
Foxes are North America’s smallest wild dogs. Though red foxes most commonly
have red coats, their colours vary from red, to mottled buff, dark brown, or
even silver. All, however, have white-tipped, bushy tails.
Like their coyote cousins, foxes have a varied, omnivorous diet, eating anything
from insects, to mice, snakes, birds, and berries. They play a key role in
keeping rodent populations in check.
Badger
(Taxidea taxus)
Weight: 7 kg
($500-$5,000)
Length: 70 cm
The badger’s short, flat body and strong claws are ideal for its subterranean lifestyle.
This grassland weasel hunts mostly at night, catching ground squirrels, pocket gophers,
and other small rodents. On summer mornings, before the day gets too warm, you
may see them sunning themselves above ground.

Badgers do not hibernate but do undergo periods where they lower their metabolism
to conserve energy during the cold months.
