OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH
TAMUCC has reached a new level for sponsored projects. Awards for two of the last three years have exceeded $19M
and exceeded $20M in FY 2009. The potential for 2010 is great as well with the FY09 submissions reaching $74.8M;
much greater than the $40 – 50M of the last 4 years and the number of submissions at 241 exceeded 200 for the first time.
The work with the private sector has increased, the number of intellectual property communications is growing and IRB
protocols are up as well.
The publication, grant and contract work reported herein documents the increased educational, research and creative
work; all of which creates opportunities for students. The extensive and greater than ever publications, presentations,
shows and performances is exemplary. Congratulations to the fantastic faculty and staff of TAMUCC!
The ultimate outcome for university research is immersing students and then having the students
share the results with peers!

Texas Research Development Fund (TRDF), which is
distributed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board, provides awards to eligible Texas universities
based on the restricted research expenditures. Total
expenditures at TAMUCC for FY’09 were $19.10M with
“restricted” expenditures totaling over $10.77M. The
amount of TRDF funding is based on research
expenditures from the prior three years.

Awards from the Research Enhancement Fund
Research Enhancement is an internal award that is granted to applicants whose proposals are reviewed by a committee and recommended
for funding. The monies allocated to this award total $110K per year. From this total, $44K is distributed at the College Level by the College
Deans. The remaining $66K is distributed through the Office of Graduate Studies and Research as recommended by the Research

INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB)
The Office of Human Research Protections, which is within the US
Department of Health and Human Services, regulates research being
conducted using human subjects. This research could be as minimal as
survey/interview research or as intense as clinical trial research. At
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, our IRB committee reviews
primarily educational research which involves surveys, interviews, and
focus groups utilizing children from area school districts. The committee
does review various other forms of research protocols throughout the
year. The full committee meets on the first Friday of each month to
review protocols. Committee members are also asked to review
protocols within the “Expedited” category on an as need basis. The chart
shown below reflects the activity of research involving human subjects
that is conducted by TAMU-CC faculty, staff & students. For more

INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE
AND USE COMMITTEE (IACUC)
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is
responsible for approving research that is conducted using animals.
The committee reviews protocols to ensure proper procedures are in
place.
On a bi-annual basis, the committee conducts facility
inspections to ensure that feeding logs are maintained, animal housing
is safe and appropriate for the animals, and that all animals are
receiving proper care.

FEATURING THE 2009 OUTSTANDING RESEARCH SCHOLAR
During his seven years at TAMU-CC, Professor Griffith has continued to analyze
individuals' life stories. Along with three colleagues--Professor Raul Prezas, Visiting
Professor George Labercane, and doctoral student Deborah Crowder--he collected
stories from young men of Latin descent and Hispanic women of courage and used
those narratives as the basis for several articles. These articles have appeared in
International Journal of Humanities, Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, Curriculum
and Teaching, Journal of Border Educational Research, as well as other national and
international journals.
Dr. Bryant Griffith
PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION
University Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activity Award Recipient 2009
Canadian by birth, Dr. Griffith has spent much of his life and pursued much of his
academic work in Canada. His Ph.D. and M.A., which were both in Educational Theory,
are from the University of Toronto, where he also earned a B. Ed. He also has a B.A.
from York University. He has served on the faculty of University of Calgary, where he
was Coordinator of Graduate Programs and also Associate Dean, and also on the
faculty of Acadia University, where he was Director of the School of Education as well
as Professor of Education. His professional experience includes a number of years
teaching in Canadian elementary and secondary education and a Montessori school in
Toronto. He has been a visiting scholar in the United Kingdom at both Cambridge
University and Oxford University. In 2007, five years after he came to Corpus Christi
for his position at this university, he became a naturalized American citizen.
At TAMU-CC Dr. Griffith is well known for his ability to integrate his scholarship with
his teaching in graduate courses on curriculum theory, educational philosophy, and
critical pedagogy. He also serves as a mentor for doctoral students as they pursue their
own research projects, and he collaborates on scholarly work with colleagues in
Educational Leadership as well as in Curriculum and Instruction.
Professor Bryant Griffith focuses his scholarship on social, cultural, and technological issues in
education. During the past three years he has published three books, a trilogy that includes A
Philosophy of Curriculum, Cultural Narration, and In the Borderlands of Teaching and Learning
(all published by Sense Press, Rotterdam). He argues: “The craft of teaching and learning is
like playing in a symphony orchestra; every instrument has a voice and every voice is integral
to the whole. For ten years, Professor Griffith has pursued cultural issues through narrative as
well as the issues that people address as they tell their tales.
An early book Where Do We Start? (Indulgence Press, Minneapolis), a collaboration with
Thomas Rose, Professor of Art at the University of Minnesota, is an art form as well as a book
and presents stories told by men over forty years of age who recall and share their feelings
about "the mysteries, vagaries and confusion of systematized education" and reveal their
"fears, insecurities and self doubt.” Housed in the permanent collections of the Whitney
Museum in New York and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the volume provides a unique
portrayal of American education.
