Along with three colleagues--Professor Raul Prezas, Visiting Professor George Labercane, and doctoral student Deborah Crowder--he collected stories from young men of Latin descent and Hispanic women of courage and used those narratives as the basis for several articles. These articles have appeared in International Journal of Humanities, Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, Curriculum and Teaching, Journal of Border Educational Research, as well as other national and international journals. Dr. Bryant Griffith PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION University Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activity Award Recipient 2009 Canadian by birth, Dr. Griffith has spent much of his life and pursued much of his academic work in Canada. His Ph.D. and M.A., which were both in Educational Theory, are from the University of Toronto, where he also earned a B. Ed. He also has a B.A. from York University. He has served on the faculty of University of Calgary, where he was Coordinator of Graduate Programs and also Associate Dean, and also on the faculty of Acadia University, where he was Director of the School of Education as well as Professor of Education. His professional experience includes a number of years teaching in Canadian elementary and secondary education and a Montessori school in Toronto. He has been a visiting scholar in the United Kingdom at both Cambridge University and Oxford University. In 2007, five years after he came to Corpus Christi for his position at this university, he became a naturalized American citizen. At TAMU-CC Dr. Griffith is well known for his ability to integrate his scholarship with his teaching in graduate courses on curriculum theory, educational philosophy, and critical pedagogy. He also serves as a mentor for doctoral students as they pursue their own research projects, and he collaborates on scholarly work with colleagues in Educational Leadership as well as in Curriculum and Instruction. Professor Bryant Griffith focuses his scholarship on social, cultural, and technological issues in education. During the past three years he has published three books, a trilogy that includes A Philosophy of Curriculum, Cultural Narration, and In the Borderlands of Teaching and Learning (all published by Sense Press, Rotterdam). He argues: “The craft of teaching and learning is like playing in a symphony orchestra; every instrument has a voice and every voice is integral to the whole. For ten years, Professor Griffith has pursued cultural issues through narrative as well as the issues that people address as they tell their tales. An early book Where Do We Start? (Indulgence Press, Minneapolis), a collaboration with Thomas Rose, Professor of Art at the University of Minnesota, is an art form as well as a book and presents stories told by men over forty years of age who recall and share their feelings about "the mysteries, vagaries and confusion of systematized education" and reveal their "fears, insecurities and self doubt.” Housed in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum in New York and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the volume provides a unique portrayal of American education. 13 SPONSORED PROJECTS ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2009 Photo by Virginia Hopkins APPENDIX I PI Name FISCAL YEAR 2009 AWARDS Sponsor UT Marine Science Institute Port of Corpus Christi National Park Services Admin Unit CBI CBI CBI College S&T S&T S&T Awarded $6,998.00 $25,470.00 $30,106.00 City of Corpus Christi Guadalupe Blanco River Authority CBBEP THECB NSF THECB Nueces County Del Mar College/USDA UT-Medical Branch at Galveston NIH THECB THECB US Dept. of Education CBI CBI CBI PALS PALS PALS KNSY LSCI LSCI LSCI Title V Title V TRIO / Title V S&T S&T S&T S&T S&T S&T EDU S&T S&T S&T ADMIN ADMIN ADMIN $116,719.00 $21,300.00 $40,000.00 $11,204.00 $599,952.00 $3,000.00 $6,000.00 $46,989.00 $77,544.00 $48,000.00 $100,000.00 $25,000.00 $1,773,092.00 SUPPLEMENT A-The College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) Grant Program Year 2 TX Nuclear Power Institute (Yr. 2) BPC-AE CAHSI: Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions Attacking the Gathering Storm in Computer Science and Mathematics US Dept. of Education TWC/TEES UT El Paso NSF TRIO/TITLE V CSCI CSCI CSCI ADMIN S&T S&T S&T $62,316.00 $25,000.00 $164,824.00 $599,599.00 Special Education Recruitment and Retention CAPICITY Grant Special Education and Recruitment and Retention Grant Stars Project FY 2009 Coastal Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Research Coastal Erosion Prevention and Response Act (CERPA) Master Agreement Coastal Erosion Prevention and Response Act (CERPA) Master Agreement Geohazards Mapping of South Padre Island Evaluation of Ecosystem Services of Coastal Habitats Gulf of Mexico Alliance: Identification and Characterization of Gulf Habitats Priority Team TAMU Texarkana / US Dept. of ED TAMU Texarkana / TEA OJJDP Suemaur E&P, LLC HDR UT/Bureau of Economic Geology TGLO EPA NOAA EDU EDU EDU CWSS HRI HRI HRI HRI HRI EDU EDU EDU S&T S&T S&T S&T S&T S&T Hamilton, Mary Jane Hamilton, Mary Jane Hamilton, Mary Jane Hauger, Greg Hay, Richard Hernandez, Art / Guffy, Ted Hernandez, Art Nursing Education Performance Initiative Grant MHMR Community-Based Services Agreement Professional Nursing Shortage Reduction The Texas Statewide Geodetic Control Project Winn Exploration Research Contract College and Career Readiness Initiative Studies to Treat or Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes STOPP-T2D NSNG NSNG NSNG CBI CWSS EDU EDU NSNG NSNG NSNG S&T S&T EDU EDU $25,000.00 $50,000.00 $266,942.00 $75,000.00 $30,000.00 $715,000.00 $22,929.00 Hill, Denise Hopkins, Dee / Garcia, Robert THECB Mathematics Science Technology Academy SUPPLEMENT C-Stars Project FY 2009 THECB MHMR THECB TWDB Winn Exploration THECB National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases GWU/UTHSCSA THECB OJJDP EDU EDU EDU EDU $477,680.60 $178,870.00 Adams, John Adams, John Adams, John Adams, John Adams, John Adams, John Billiot, Eugene Billiot, Eugene Billiot, Fereshteh Bonnette, Randy / Munoz, Raul Cammarata, Kirk Chopin, Suzzette Chopin, Suzzette Davila, Victor Davila, Victor Davila, Victor Davila, Victor Fernandez, John Fernandez, John Fernandez, John / Hill, Patricia / Giraldo, Jose / Gage, Jeannie / Wisner, Liza Garcia, O.B.
