ENTRANCES
THE 4.5 METERS RULE EFFECTIVE ENTRANCE DESIGN
RECEPTION AREA
/ STAIRCASES
LIFT LOBBIES
A simple rule-of-thumb to design effective matting
applications which reduce the amount of dirt and
moisture transferred into a building.
• 4.5 metres of matting allows each foot to make
contact with matting at least 3 times.
Entrances are the focal point of dirt and moisture
ingress. Most commercial areas will receive heavy
footfall and require protection from the outside
elements. By installing effective matting you
increase the life expectancy and reduce the
maintenance costs of the adjacent floorcoverings.
Combinations of primary and secondary products in
these areas can provide a stylish and highly effective
solution to remove tracked in dirt and moisture.
• 4.5 metres of matting is required to remove the
majority of dirt and moisture from foot traffic.
• 4.5 metres can be divided in 3 mats, each with a
minimum length of 1.5 metres.
Reception areas typically receive higher footfalls
over their lifecycle. These areas are the second
line of defence for protecting the main building
floor coverings. Often located near a main
entrance these areas require heavy contract
protection while still maintaining an attractive
aesthetic and being easy to maintain.
KITCHEN / CANTEEN
Zone 1 - catches the first wave of heavy debris. Up to 40% of
dirt/moisture is removed from shoes in the first 1.5 metres
Often located near main entrances and receptions,
lift lobbies are the gateway to more delicate
floorcoverings in the building. Therefore the lift
lobby must be adequately protected with
secondary matting systems to ensure the final
stage of dirt and moisture is captured rather than
tracked into other areas.
PRODUCTION LINES
Canteens , kitchens and vending areas are prone
to spillages and an ingress of moisture. To
prevent build ups of dirt Mat.Works provides easy
to clean, impervious backed floorcoverings that
also provide excellent anti-slip properties. Many
of our anti-slip products can also withstand acid
and alkali spills.
CORRIDORS & WALKWAYS
Warehouses can be dangerous areas covered in
dirt and moisture. Mat.Works ergonomic matting
can provide safer surfaces to work on which are
engineered to provide anti-fatigue properties as
well ensuring dirt and moisture stays trapped
within the mat, rather than tracked into main
building areas.
Corridors and walkways are the arteries of a
building, they endure high footfall and frequent
wheeled traffic such as wheelchairs and trolleys.
These areas require a secondary entrance matting
product that provides a durable solution while
reducing maintenance costs. Mat.Works
secondary systems also create flowing, attractive
areas that conjoin other floor coverings easily.
ENTRANCE
Zone 2 - scrapes fine debris and absorbs moisture in the indoor
foyer area for up to 70% in the first 3 metres

ECOLINE - TYRE TILE & ECO GRIDMASTER
Mat.Works the Eco Warrior
Tyre Tile
Both mats incorporate recycled tyres as wiper strips within the products. Everyday
100,000 tyres are taken from cars, vans, trucks, buses and bicycles, what
happens to them? Until recently most were either dumped
or burnt, both of which are extremely harmful to the
environment. Tyres that are illegally dumped in the
countryside or in land fills are virtually impossible to break
down due to the synthetic and chemical materials inside
them, and when burnt these cause dense smoke and toxic
fumes, many of which cause a damaging carbon footprint,
we have introduced two new products which have little
impact on the environment and come from a 100% recycled
or recyclable source.
Mat.Works has
developed a
range of
eco-friendly
matting systems
under our new
Eco-Line brand
10
This gives us, the manufacturer, and you the consumer, the
opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint by not using raw
materials from source.

Co-extruded PVC profiles combine the strength of the hard PVC with the soft, flexible and anti-slip profiles.
The PVC profiles are separated by aluminium scraper bars. The unique interlocking system minimises the
components used and enhances the strength and flexibility of the mat.

An open tread design which effectively collects dirt below the surface of the mat, manufactured from
co-extruded PVC with aluminium connector bars. Smartscraper is rollable and reversible which facilitates easy
cleaning and maintenance.
Function:
Smartscraper is an entrance matting system suitable for heavy traffic situations. The surface has soft anti-slip
PVC which scrapes away moisture and dirt. The scraped dirt is then trapped below the walking surface thus
preventing dirt from being carried into the building helping to reduce slip and fall accidents and maintenance
costs. Smartscraper is a rollable and reversible scraper mat for both interior and exterior applications.
Smartscraper is suitable for high heels, wheelchairs and shopping trolleys. For heavy duty areas Mat.Works
recommends the use of floor clips to hold the mat in place.

Paragon had a number of their carpet tiles specified on the project including 4 colourways of the new Strobe
product, Lime, Plasma, Spark and Ignite (Lime is a bespoke to the client, lime green), which was used
extensively in breakout zones and meeting rooms. The new vibrant linear patterned carpet features a flash of
lime through the pile, which was exactly what the councils in house team were looking for.
Mat.Works Supplied the main entrance matting areas which incorporated Smart Scraper a unique matting
system, which can be used outside. Following this was Platoon Brush secondary carpet matting
incorporating the councils crest. Andy Gordon National Sales Manager for Mat.Works said “The main
entrance threw up a number of issues in terms of getting the correct amount of matting into the installation,
we brought the smart scraper element outside which meant we didn’t have to encroach onto the inner floor”

MILLBROOK SHOPPING CENTRE
coir-blue
Middlebrook shopping centre required a two stage entrance
system, the first stage to scrape dirt from shoes and the
second to absorb moisture before footfall traffic could
deliver this moisture into potential slip zones. By using
Tyre Tile embedded into the revolving door entrances,
two thirds of dirt is scraped from shoes while a
supplementary installation of Grip-Fit mats in the inner
entrance safeguarded the shopping centre from any
remaining moisture.

MATTING CARE TIPS
Carpet Care Tips
To help you maintain your mats appearance
and usefulness over the longest possible
time, the manufacturer suggests:
Wet Shampooing
When daily care (vacuuming, etc.) fails to
restore colour of carpet surface due to
excessive embedded soil, shampooing is
recommended. Use any neutral synthetic
detergent with tepid water (1/2 cup per gallon
of water). Hand brush method will yield good
results. Use sponge or cloth to remove suds.
If carpet is matted with excessive soil, use
detergent with brushing as described and
follow by rinsing with cool water until soil is
removed. Remove excess water with floor
squeegee and place in an inclined position to
drain dry. If on-site maintenance is not
available, manufacturer recommends mat be
sent to reputable rug cleaner and be
professionally shampooed for a nominal cost.
If professional shampooing is required, use
only flat washing equipment, and temperature
not exceeding 120º F. Manufacturer cannot be
responsible for damage resulting from
cleaning in rotary laundering equipment.

When a spill occurs, absorb as much liquid
as possible with any clean absorbent
material. On oil or grease based stains, use
dry cleaning fluid in small amounts and blot
until stain is removed.
Vacuum or Broom Daily
This is important especially in heavy traffic
areas. Best results are obtained when carpet
surface is dry.
Shedding or Fuzzing
A shedding or fuzzing condition is not a
carpet defect, but rather common to all new
fabrics. This will disappear after the first few
vacuum cleans.
Storage & Handling
Roll carpet in compact roll with pile facing
out. Lay flat. Do not crush. Store in a
moderate temperature and dry area.
CAUTION: If the borders on matting become
broken or curled, the matting should be
removed from service until the tripping
hazard can be corrected.
Under all circumstances regular cleaning is strongly recommended for hygienic/safety reasons and to
reduce the effects of abrasion or aggressive industrial fluids on mats, thereby maintaining their
effectiveness longer.

Matting Systems
Smartscraper and Frameworks
Daily:
Vacuum clean
Weekly:
Removal of grit, etc. and vacuum clean. Removal of
chewing gum
Monthly:
Removal of large grit, etc. and vacuum clean. Cleaning
of matwell: - roll up mat and extract dirt / grid from under
the mat. Check retainer screws at all 4 corners of mat
and replace mat after cleaning making sure retainer
screws are secure.
Periodically: Removal of large grit, etc.+ vacuum
clean. Cleaning of matwell by roll up the mat and extract
dirt grid from under the mat. Check retainer screws and
replace mat after cleaning making sure retainer screws
are secure. Accumulating dirt underneath the mats may
undermine the structure of the mat.
Cleaning frequency is subject to amount of traffic,
surroundings and weather conditions.
Modular Primary Matting Systems
of chewing gum*
Monthly: Remove large grit from the mat well by
vacuum cleaning. Thoroughly clean mat well: - Take
modules up and extract dirt / grit from under the mat.
Replace modules in exact order they came out.

dirt / grit from under the mat. Check sub floor is sound
and replace modules in exact place where they were
found. We also recommend that a periodic deep clean
using hot water extraction is used to remove deep set
dirt within the mat. (Specialist cleaning firms can be
recommended just call our sales office on 08456010431
for more information).
Cleaning frequency is subject to amount of traffic,
surroundings and weather conditions.
Gridmaster Matting, if made in a square or rectangular
shape can be reversed from time to time this will double
the life expectancy of the product.
*NB:- removal of chewing gum is best using a
proprietory gum removal gel such as that from fleetlight

Maintenance Specification for Mat.Works Entrance Carpets and Carpet Tiles
To maximise the entrance carpet’s aesthetic appeal, performance and life expectancy, it is imperative to ensure at the
specification stage that:
1. Carpets will be protected from other site activities during installation and thereafter.
2. Clients understand the enclosed information and that they accept responsibility for correct carpet care. (Mat.Works
will provide a copy of the Cleaning and Maintenance guide to the end-users address when requested.)
General Cleaning - Daily vacuuming with a rotary brush vacuum cleaner, preferably with an adjustable head,
is recommended. It is essential to remove all loose soil daily because if left to build up, the particles of dirt are much
harder to remove and are more damaging to the yarn structure, thereby decreasing the life of the carpet.
Entrance Areas are prone to higher traffic levels and higher levels of dirt and moisture. This means that the
maintenance program for entrance matting should be more frequent than for general carpeting areas, a ratio of 2
entrance cleans to 1 carpet clean is a general good guide for preventative periodical maintenance.
Depending on the level of trafficking, the carpet should be periodically deep cleaned using high performance hot
water extraction equipment. In certain circumstances, for instance excessively stained carpet the cleaning
professional may consider a combination between rotary brush and extraction equipment to give improved results.
Rotary brush cleaning by itself is not recommended.
A reputable contract cleaner should be used, preferably NCCA registered (for NCCA details telephone 0116 271
9550). It is important that the carpet is deep cleaned at least once a year.
Stain Removal - It is essential to deal with spillages immediately and any subsequent stains as appropriate.
In the event of a spillage, immediately blot with a clean absorbent cloth until there is no further transfer from
the carpet to the cloth. If any further stain remains or has otherwise been allowed to dry, the method will vary
accordingly.

Cleaning solutions and methods
Daily: Vacuum clean
Weekly: Removal of grit, etc. vacuum clean. Removal
FACT : Mat.Works has achieved ISO9001:
It is recognised that particularly for
contract situations, if stains are not
dealt with immediately, cleaning
staff may not be in a position to
identify the type of stain. A good
quality, multi-purpose stain
remover is therefore very useful,
although it must be understood
that this will not successfully
tackle all types of stains, and
wherever possible the chart
recommendations should be
strictly adhered to (see right). Also
any stains left over a period of
time become increasingly more
difficult to remove and may require
several treatments.

In all cases after stain removal the
carpet should be allowed to dry
completely and then cleaned with
a rotary brush vacuum cleaner.
A
A liquid detergent such as Granwax spot/stain remover, in accordance
with manufacturers instructions.
Granwax tel no: 01773 541177
Solvent cleaning of bitumen
backed tiles should preferably be
avoided. Where this is not
possible, extra caution should be
taken and only very light surface
cleaning should take place.
B
A dry solvent spotter such
as Prochem solvall.
Special Cases Cigarette burns – it is
recommended that these are
punched out and replaced by
a professional carpet fitter.
Major spillages – seek
professional advice from a
member of the NCCA.
If any of the treatment lists are not
successful, seek professional help.
The methods are based upon
experience and are recommended
in good faith. However, we cannot
accept responsibility for their use
in any specific case.
C
Methylated spirits
Method: Moisten a cloth with the
appropriate solvent an dab onto
the stain. Carry on using alternate
moist and dry cloths until no further stain transfer. Finally, cover
the damp area with a thick wad of
dry cloths, cover with something
heavy and leave for several hours
D
A paste made with biological washing powder mixed to use as little water
as possible.
Method: Moisten stain with warm water and cover with the paste. Keep
moist for approximately 2 hours. Sponge with clean warm water and blot
with an absorbent cloth.
E
Scrape off the excess with a blunt edged knife. Use proprietary chewing
gum remover. Contact Granwax for advice.
