Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1: 6 – 8, 13 – 14 Paul writes to Timothy from prison and urges him to continue to spread the gospel without fear or shame. He also tells Timothy to draw upon the strength of the Holy Spirit to help him face the hardships he will encounter while preaching. Gospel: Luke 17: 5 – 10 The disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith. Jesus replies that "faith the size of a mustard seed could transplant a sycamore," indicating that a person either has faith, strong and complete, or none at all. Jesus also explains that a servant will not receive gratitude for simply following his master's orders. In the same way, we are all God's servants doing no more than our duty when we obey God's commands. ©2000 Bon Venture Services, Inc. OCTOBER MONDAY EVENINGS MARIAN DEVOTIONS 7:30 – 8:30 PM EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT, SCRIPTURAL ROSARY & BENEDICTION Last Friday we celebrated the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint chosen by our Holy Father in name and indeed as he was called to ministry as our Chief Shepherd. We know that they have many things in common and share similar concerns for the Church in their times. But we are also aware that our secular society and sometimes our religious communities diminish their significance and almost caricature their teachings. For instance, Saint Francis is pictured as talking to the animals and running about in his habit with his monks. Little recognition is given to the fact that he was a reformer: the church needed to be rebuilt on the foundations of the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. His care for nature was always within the context that we are stewards of God’s creation. Our pope is not merely kissing babies, making surprise phone calls, or driving more modest cars while dwelling in a modest Vatican set of rooms. And he is certainly not calling for a change in the moral landscape. He is challenging all of us to rebuild with him the greatness of the church which lies not in institutional form but in personal outreach. In the interview that is still stirring up many thoughts and emotions he sets the tone not only for his pontificate but for the whole church in these critical times. As first of all believers, he states categorically: “I am a sinner.” He acknowledges that like all of us he has fallen short of the glory of God. He does not seek to excuse himself but admits to a failure to be docile before the Lord. He recalls as a leader of his community he perhaps at times was too authoritarian not acknowledging the contribution of others. As to the issues that were most controversial when misquoted in the media He tells us that when we speak of life issues “we have to talk about them in context. The teaching of the church, for that matter is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time.” In other words, these teachings are firm, the moral life demands that we uphold the dignity of human life in all its stages. On this pro-life Sunday, we must stand with the Pope and Catholic teaching that as Cardinal Cooke told us in his final moments “life is God’s most precious gift” which does not become diminished by infirmity or age. But what is the “context” of which our Holy Father speaks? It is best to let him touch us with his words: “A beautiful homily, a genuine sermon must begin with the first proclamation, with the proclamation of salvation. There is nothing more solid, deep and sure than this proclamation. Then you have to do catechesis. Then you can draw even a moral consequence. But the proclamation of the saving love of God comes before moral and religious imperatives. Today sometimes it seems that the opposite order is prevailing. The homily is the touchstone to measure the pastor’s proximity and ability to meet the people, because those who preach must recognize the heart of their community and must be able to see where the desire for God is ardent and lively. The message of the Gospel, therefore, is not to be reduced to some aspects that, although relevant, on their own do not show the heart of the message of Jesus Christ.” These are sentiments to be prayed over and reflected about with greater care than listening to thirty second sound bites or reading thirty lines of newsprint. Pray to Francis of Assisi for our modern Francis who is walking with us on the journey of faith. (6) Night Prayers should include: making oneself aware of the presence of God, thanking God for the benefits received during the day, an examination of conscience and imploring God’s pardon for sins committed, imploring God’s protection over us during the night, praying for the grace of a holy death, prayer for the Holy Souls in purgatory, and prayer to one’s Guardian Angel. (10) Three indispensable sources of Spiritual Reading are (a) The HOLY BIBLE (especially the Four Gospels and the Book of Psalms for prayer), (b) The Imitation of Christ by Thomas á Kempis, and (3) the lives of the saints. REMEMBER TO PRAY THE ROSARY DAILY! + PARISH MEETINGS + RCIA Session Liturgy Committee Holy Name Society th Oct. 8 7:30 PM FWH-MSR th Oct. 8 7:30 PM Church th Oct. 10 7:30PM FWH A NOTE TO OUR NON-CATHOLIC FRIENDS Although we warmly welcome you to our parish Liturgies, we cannot extend to you an invitation to receive Holy Communion. The reception of Holy Communion is a sign of Unity in Faith, and such unity does not exist between Catholics and those who belong to other Christian groups. That unity is something for which we are to pray. If you would like to explore becoming a Catholic, please speak to one of the Priests. You may find the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION helpful. This document is found printed on the inside cover of Today’s Missal in the pews. +++ CatholicsComeHome.org +++ LOOKING FOR THAT RIGHT PERSON? www.catholicsingles.com A NOTE ABOUT BECOMING SPONSORS FOR BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 yrs of age or older, having received Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Catholic, attending Mass there regularly. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are chosen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or received sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that some are neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members of a parish family and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors. Like all other things in life, individual choices bring consequences.
