The weather was a little hot and humid with a slight overcast and a temperature in the high eighties. The gentle breezes caused by the passing train were just as refreshing as a cool drink. Between 75 to 80 visitors came to the Depot to enjoy the activities and watch numerous freight trains passing the historical building in the midst of like railroad enthusiasts. The Depot provided a modest Bill of Fare for the guests that came hungry. Terry Mawery manned the 8-12 grill and Steve Bolyard took care of the sales. Donuts and no coffee, Dah? Many of the guests were surprised by the changes since their last visit especially the work done around the caboose. If you missed this fun event, there are still two more on the calendar for the year. On Saturday September 10th, 2016 the theme will be “Corn Roast” and the last Railfanning Day of the 2016 season will be on Saturday October 15th, 2016. The theme of the last Rail fanning Day will be “Oktoberfest” and there will be plenty of kraut and brats on the grill. So come and enjoy one or more of our events with our many other supporters while reliving the nostalgia of an outstanding railroad era. The Depot membership is open, growing and we signed our 63rd member at this event, Mr. Dan Chuppa. Welcome aboard Dan and join in on the fun. The Painesville Railroad Museum set up a booth and partook in the revelries. Every year the city of Painesville closes all the streets into and around the public square for three days to accommodate this Gala event. Most stores, businesses, services and contrac- tors set up a booth to display their wares and meet one on one with the residents of Lake County. It was the intent of the Painesville Depot to let the people of Painesville, Lake and adjoining counties that we are alive and well and an active member of the Painesville Community. There was plenty to do for kids of all ages. There were dozens of fast food booths, several carnival rides and games, give-a-ways and an endless line of musicians and bands waiting for their turn to get up on the stage and fill the air with their music. Spanky was there with his brilliant outfit of royal blue and golden feathers willing to pose for pictures with people in the park. It was estimated that 30-40 thousand people enjoyed the festivities of this annual event. Quaker Steak and Lube -7834 Reynolds Road, Mentor, Ohio T his year the Painesville Depot volunteers will be at Quaker Steak and Lube, Rt. 306 in Mentor for their Bike Night. We will be selling beer as a fundraiser for the Depot. The next Bike Night will be on August 11, 2016 from 5 pm to 10 pm. It is on a Thursday and it will be our last of the year. Stop by and have a beer with us and show your support! The Depot Dispatch Volume II Issue 5 Page 4 Something Completely Different F or the first time, the Painesville Railroad Museum hosted a “Paint & Sip” event on Wednesday August 27th, 2016. Our resident Energizer Bunnies, Lisa Cummings and Julie Rhodes made all of the arrangements with Stella’s Art Gallery. Dani Klein and Carol Pitts, a mother-daughter team from the gallery, provided individual canvases, watercolor paints, brushes and most importantly, their expertise as instructors. Julie and Lisa prepared an array of crackers and cheeses, champagnegria along with a variety of donated wines for the participants. The cost of this event was a modest $30.00 for three hours of a calming and therapeutic experience that ends with your own piece of art suitable to be framed or just hung on a wall. As an outside observer, I was very impressed and would seriously consider joining this group should they have a railroad theme to paint. Word is out on Facebook and there were many favorable reviews. I hear that there are plans already in the offing to have another Paint & Sip event in the near future at the Depot. Check our web page and future newsletters for upcoming information on all events planned at the Depot. The Depot Dispatch Volume II Issue 5 Page 5 Bike Night @ the Lube x 2 O n Thursday July 28th, 2016 the Painesville Railroad Museum sponsored its second Bike Night at the Quaker Steak and Lube in Mentor, Ohio. There was a roped of section of the parking that had well over 100 motorcycles of all shapes, sizes and manufactures that appeared during the evening. Folks that like to ride bikes, meet with likeminded friends, have something to eat and drink and be entertained by a live band that took a little break after each set. While still being a little loud, the band (Street Wiz.) played songs that one could recognize. It was nice to actually hear specific words. Spanky was there in his bright brilliant blue and gold attire and still wowed the crowd. Julie Rhodes was also there with as much enthusiasm as the first time, covering the grounds many times over selling 50/50 raffle tickets. The weather was warm, and very favorable to a cold beer. The Lube had a grill set up right next to us and had a great cheeseburger for around $5.00. The whole object of these fundraisers is to sell beer. Our sales of beer this time, were much better, but there was still room for improvement. So if you like beer, make it your beverage of choice for the evening and come down to the Lube for a beer, camaraderie, a great cheeseburger and a chance to show you support the Painesville Depot and br ing a friend. If a live band is not your bag, come early around 5 pm and we will have a chance to chat. You will be able to find us under the beer tent in the parking lot on Thursday August 11th, 2016.
