Anniversary is the theme of this month! As I write my report,
Mrs. Commodore, Amy, and I are celebrating our 19th
Anniversary. What is the significance to this to RYC you ask?
Nineteen years ago, Past Commodore Mark Rode and Vice
Commodore John Stanley, took me out sailing on March 22,
1997 out of Racine and later that day I was married to Amy
Lynn. Mark was our best man for our wedding and who
would have known that 19 years later I would also be
Commodore of RYC. I would say that is a pretty good
recruiting technique.
Another anniversary that needs mentioning is RYC’s 100th! If
you are not aware by now, Racine Yacht Club is celebrating
our 100th Anniversary this year! Friday, April 1st and
Saturday, 2nd will be a two-day party to celebrate our
birthday! Kurt has some special things planned so stay tuned!
Our 100th Anniversary Gala is scheduled for Saturday, May
28th. This will be our formal celebration to mark this historic
time in RYC’s history, so dust off your fancy clothes and
dancing shoes!
RYC’s St. Paddy’s Day celebration was a hit as usual. Put
together a packed house, corned beef and cabbage, Irish
music and a few drinks and what do you have…..another epic
party at the Club. That reminds me of one of my favorite
jokes. Two Irishmen walk out of a bar…what? It could
happen! Oh and apparently, don’t wear a tie around Jim
Rooney on St. Patrick’s Day!
Launch Day is approaching quickly! Plan accordingly and get
that boat work done because come Saturday, April 30th your
boat is getting wet! Please plan to come down and assist those
launching their boats that day as work or pay hours are
available.
If you have not been down to the Club recently, you may not
have noticed that all the trees in the parking lot are gone. Jack
Landwehr and crew removed the dying trees and are now
looking for direction on if we would like to replace them or
just refresh some of the bushes in the lot. Please let him know
your thoughts soon so we can have a fresh looking Club for
our gala! Yard and Dock Day is scheduled for May 14th.
Phones ミ General: (262) 634-8585
Frank Gall can use some assistance on the pier, fixing some of
the winter damage and adjusting piers. Contact him if you are
able to assist in this endeavor.
Don’t make too many plans on being out of town this
summer. You don’t want to miss all the fun that will be going
on at RYC.
Spring is here, put your shorts on, keep positive vibes and
summer will be here sooner than you think!
Remember it is always tropical in your mind!

RYC News in Brief
From the March Board meeting minutes:
Treasurer Frank Randall reported:
• 2015 Financial Summary
- Adjusted income $23,500 vs $6,900 budget
and $15,700 last year.
- House maintenance well above budget
due to unbudgeted sewer repair.
- Benefited from unbudgeted income from
100th Anniversary event sales (including
a substantial amount from the Denis
Sullivan event.)
- Gross sales for bar and food increased
substantially with Pink Magnolia.
- Dues income is up partly resulting from
4% dues increase.
- Club savings are up from last year.
•2016 Budget (February 1, 2017 thru
January 31, 2017)
- Adjusted income budgeted at $10,100.
- Large budgeted projects include: Main
Pier Electric, Point of Sale (aka POS)
software and house shutdown.
- This is the last year of the 4% dues
increase.
•Good month for February, well over
budget.
•Lake Michigan water level is forecast to
increase 2-6” in March.
•Financial results for the fiscal year
ending January 31, 2016 are issued and
posted..
From Commodore Gregg Henning:
•Gregg thanked Frank for his updated
spreadsheet comparing our dues and
slip fees with other clubs and marinas.
RYC seems to be reasonably positioned
cost-wise.
•Gregg thanked Kim for her work
evaluating different POS packages.
From Office Manager Kim Shortess:
•POS (Point of Sale) software replacement:
Kim and Eddie have looked at many
different systems and recommend we
purchase Microsales. It interfaces with
Quickbooks but will require manual entry
for dues, slip fees and minimum spending.
Kim believes this extra work on her part
will be offset by tasks that will be
automated. All in one workstations are
$1599/each. First license is $900 and each
additional work station will be $700. The
Quote for new two stations, a third license
for the office and initial set up and training
is $6778. Maintenance will be $600/year.
Jim McBain asked Kim to make sure data
backup is in place from day one. The board
supports this previously approved and
budgeted purchase, with option to add a
second workstation behind the bar if
needed.
•Frank Randall moved that we authorize
unbudgeted payment of $600/year for
POS software support which includes
access to a help desk and software updates.
Jim McBain seconded. The motion passed.
•POS timing: Will implement ASAP,
probably in April.
Vice Commodore John Stanley:
•Excused, racing J-70s in Miami.
Rear Commodore Amy Cermak:
•No report.
From Membership Secretary Pam Jobson:
•Active member Charles Perkins passed
away.
•Status changes: Bonnie Smith requested
a status change from social to active.
Mike and Janet Pobar requested a status
change from active to senior. Pam moved
that we approve these requests. Jack
Landwehr seconded and the motion
passed.
•New member, active over 30: Pam
moved that we accept Ellie & Jerry Smith
as active over 30 members. Jack
seconded. The motion passed. Welcome
Ellie & Jerry!
•New members, associate: Pam moved
that we accept Stanley & Dorothy Pate as
associate members. Jack seconded. The
motion passed. Welcome Stanley &
Dorothy!
•Total membership stands at 260 with
68% in-county.
•Pam thanked Kim for a great cover letter
going to our boat show mailing list.
House Director Jim Mc Bain reported:
•Jim submitted a written report. Shut
down went well and as planned:
a.The Club has a fresh coat of paint in the

Yacht Club extends its sincere sympathies to the
families of both who have left us.

h.Ceiling tiles and vents were cleaned;
i.
Windows and trophy cabinets were
cleaned;
j.More efficient lighting installed.
-We still need to replace the cooler gaskets
behind the bar.
We had a great showing of members
coming down to help with this annual
project – thanks for your participation. A
big thank you to Mike Fox and Joe
McGauran; they were down there every
day – working and coordinating the
activities. Special thanks to Terry Halkowitz
for providing her interior design skills.
Jack Landwehr raised the issue of fruit flies.
Our Orkin man says foam must be applied
nightly. Housekeeping was discussed.
ACTION: Jim will follow up with Eddie.
From Pier Director Frank Gall:
•Frank is still adding to his winter repair
punch list. Ice damage is less than last
year.
•There is some plumbing damage
including broken hangers for the fire
system.
•We’ll need to repair stairs and replace
pins.
•Ice eaters are out of the water. Lots of
plastic shopping bags wrapped around
props. One 115V unit is tripping GFI and
needs to be checked out.
•One of two floaters has been repaired
and the second is underway.
•Frank plan to raise finger piers on West
Pier after floaters are repaired.
From Yard Director Jack Landwehr:
•Jack questioned whether or not we
should replace recently removed trees in
the parking lot. Jack likes the clean look
and improved view of the lake. Barren
spots need to be filled with something.
Planters, bushes, and rented palm trees
were discussed. Jack will solicit member
feedback at the March general
membership meeting.
Jack submitted a written report which has
been posted on the Club bulletin board.
Highlights include:
• Ice-Out contest cancelled due to El Nino.
•RYC mast is scheduled to be raised
April 30th.
•Contracts for dry sail and dinghy storage
are available. Prices are the same as 2015.
Dry sail area will open on Sunday,
May 8th.
•Launch day has been moved to Saturday,
April 30th. Boats must be ready to launch
by April 30th. Each skipper is expected
to have at least one crew member present
to help. Work or pay is available for nonskipper/crew volunteers. Skippers, crew
and volunteers must attend 8AM safety
meeting. Skippers and crew are expected
to remain on-site until all boats are
launched and all equipment put away.
•Jack’s bird abatement program is
underway. Jack invites members to walk
their dogs along the shoreline to
discourage geese from nesting.
•Volunteers are needed to help sandblast
and paint the white chain on the patio.
•Dock & Yard day is scheduled May 14th,
with additional work planned for May
7th. A job and project list is posted on the
work or pay board.
Over my years as RYC Yard Director, I have
heard many members and visitors
comment on the great conditions of the
RYC grounds and dock system. RYC is a
diamond on the shores of Lake Michigan
that cannot shine without the volunteer
help of ALL RYC Members. We cannot
have a great summer without spending
time in the spring cleaning off winter’s dirt.
Volunteer as often as you can.
From Race Director Bob Sample:
Pam Jobson led the Board in a round of
applause thanking Bob for an awesome
awards dinner. Bob provided the following
written report: “I would like to report the
following activity and functional items
relating to the RYC Race Director and the
Race Committee:
1.F-16 Nationals/BNCA Nationals Aug. 8-14:
I have been having weekly planning
meetings with CRAW and a joint
meeting with the Kenosha BNAC
Committee. Both groups are working
together to make this a great event.
There is a possibility we will have a 100+
boats for August events. The first week
of Aug. Craw will have a 3-day Robbie
Training program, some Cats will join
our RYC Regatta. We have the Blue Star
Championship Aug. 5-7.
2.Youth Sailing Day Aug. 8:
CRAW members will have CATS
available to take interested parties for a
ride and will have BICS and Hobies for
the program.
3.Wind Surfing Competition Sept. 10-11:
RYC will be hosting our 1st Wind Surfing
and Kiting Competition.
4.Foundation for the Youth Sailing
Program
I will have an announcement at the
Board Meeting regarding the
establishment of a Foundation for our
Youth Sailing Program.
5. Projects
Work continues on several initiatives for
our RYC Race and Youth Programs for
2016 including a revamp design for our
launching dock areas so we can
accommodate the Bemis-Smythe
participants. Additional events are being
evaluated along with our Park District
program.
6.2017 Big Event
In September of 2017 Racine will be host
to the 42nd Annual Antique and Classic
Boat Society International Meeting and
Boat Show. 300+ boats expected.
•Blue Nose/Shrimp boil timing discussed.
Feedback from members is to get
Bluenose and shrimp boil on the same
weekend but schedule is constrained.
•Youth Foundations: Bob has benchmarked other Yacht Clubs with successful youth programs and concludes
that RYC needs a youth foundation to
fulfill our mission and assure our
sustainability. Bob is exploring options to
create a youth foundation with Charlie
Manning.
•Park district: Bob met with city park
people on March 10. He reports the city
is working on upgrades and new
buildings for North Beach. Bob has
forms for reserving city parking lots.
•Bob reported on a new YMCA sailing
program.
•Bob reported he may need to clear out
Richter Bldg. to measure sails for the
Bemis Smythe event.
From Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson:
•Thoughts for Food went well, 3-4 times
last year’s attendance. .
