IRONBRIDGE WEEKEND REGATTAS
SATURDAY 25th & SUNDAY 26th JUNE 2016
Notes for Clubs and Competitors
Thank you for choosing to race at Ironbridge Regattas. Our aim is to make the event enjoyable and
safe for all, and therefore we ask that you read and understand the following notes.
Competitors
These notes should be read by every crew and sculler racing at Ironbridge Regattas over the weekend.
Whilst Ironbridge Rowing Club will do its best to ensure the safety of all competitors during racing, this does
not absolve individuals from exercising a duty of care to third parties and to themselves. Please take the time
to read the following guidance notes:

Competitors are required to report to Registration before they race, to collect their number. If you have
any changes to the BROE entry submitted, these must be declared before collecting your number.
Remember that you cannot change more than 50% of the original crew you entered. In the case of single
scullers, the sculler named on the entry form cannot be substituted. Numbers will only be issued when all
fees are paid. Please ensure that plenty of time is allowed to undertake the above, especially first thing
in the morning, although extra effort will be provided to make sure you can boat on time. Random checks
may be made on Racing Licences at registration. YOU MUST ALWAYS BRING YOUR RACING
LICENCE OR OTHER PHOTO ID TO A REGATTA IF YOU ARE RACING. Random checks of
the crew in the boat against photo ID will also be performed throughout the day.

Crews should report to the Boat Marshal, 30 minutes before the start of their race. Here, their boats will
be checked for compliance with the British Rowing Rules of Racing and ‘Row Safe’ and they will be
paired with their opposition before going afloat. Crews should pair up with their opposition before they
proceed to Boat Marshalling.

Please note that due to the level of entries, no row-overs will be allowed to avoid unnecessary
congestion on the river.

If a boat fails a safety check, the Control Commission Umpire will complete a failure form. A copy of
this will be given to you on request.

Coxswains will be weighed in at the boat marshalling point each day and given a weight certificate that
must be carried at all times. They should have with them any dead weight required (which must comply
with the BR Rules of Racing). Random checks may be performed on crews coming into the landing
stage after racing.

All competitors are required to boat-on at the upstream steps. All crews are asked to boat-on as quickly
as possible to prevent a backlog of waiting crews. Please be careful and ensure that when boating-on
and pushing off you do not impede a race coming down the course.

The first named crew is to row on the Power Station side of the river.

Crews are to proceed to the start on the Power Station side of the river. Practice starts are
NOT permitted on the course.

At the conclusion of the race, all crews must turn at the buoy as soon as it is safe and practical to do so
and then proceed to the downstream steps on the Regatta side of the river . DO NOT ROW AROUND
THE BEND. The operator of the river trips boat has very generously agreed not to run trips up the
Regatta course but will be operating up as far as the bend after the finish. As a reciprocal gesture, the
Regatta committee have agreed to stop crews rowing too far below the finish. Failure of crews to comply
with this instruction will jeopardise the agreement for future Regattas. Please stay out of the way of
the river trips boat and allow it time to turn in the centre of the river where the channel is deeper.

If the river level is above Summer Level, the central landing stage linking both sets of steps is
underwater. Crews should be prepared to wade and should be equipped with Wellington boots.
Ironbridge Weekend Regattas


Please ensure all competitors are familiar with the map of the course.

Crew numbers are to be worn on the backs of Scullers, Bows and Coxswains where they can be clearly
seen. Please be sure to wear the correct number for the event you are racing in.

Winning crews should report to Registration. Crews will need to present their racing licenses before they
can collect their prizes.

Safety Boat cover is only provided during the hours of racing and whilst crews are welcome to practice
outside of these hours they do so at their own risk. Please stay within the confines of the Regatta course
when practising out of hours and see the attached map for obstacles and shallow water.

The Regatta Committee reserve the right to amend the course distance as required by river conditions. If
river conditions are deemed too hazardous for inexperienced rowers we reserve the right to withdraw
some novice and junior categories in the interests of safety on the day of the event.

In the interest of safety, any competitor that falls into the river, under any circumstances, will not be
allowed to race again until BR’s capsize procedure has been followed (showering, dry kit has been
obtained) and the First Aid representative (SARA) has authorised it.
GENERAL NOTICES

The Organising Committee accepts no responsibility for competitors’ or spectators’ personal property.
We would remind anyone camping not to leave valuable items in their tents.

Please note that the access road and fire lane on the camping/Regatta field is to be kept clear for
emergency access at all times.

No camping or alcohol is permitted in Dale End Park; this is a restriction imposed by Telford & Wrekin
Council. Please take care when driving through the park; access will be allowed only for trailers and
towing vehicles CANNOT be left in the trailer park. All vehicles and tents are to be parked / pitched on
the Regatta Field located behind the Clubhouse. For safety reasons, please ensure that a sensible
distance is left between tents and please remember to park vehicles sensibly without taking up too much
space; the field car park can get very crowded.

Please note that NO BONFIRES are allowed anywhere, this is in the interests of safety and out of
courtesy to the football club who give up the use of their pitch for the Regatta. A schools sports day is
scheduled for the DAY after the Regatta so please show consideration to other people by not
lighting fires or leaving litter on the pitches.

Please help us to keep Dale End Park clean by using the bins provided or by taking your rubbish to the
nearest skip. Black plastic bags for rubbish are available upon request; please ask at Control. If you see
that bins are overflowing please inform Control.

SARA will be in attendance providing First Aid cover during the weekend and are located to the rear of
the marquee.

A payphone is available in the Clubhouse, which will be open between the hours of 7AM – 8PM each
day. Outside of these hours, the nearest public payphone is situated in the car park next to the Tontine
Hotel which is directly in line with the Iron Bridge itself. (Turn right at the top of the track, follow the road,
go straight on at the mini roundabout and then turn left after the Tontine into the car park). Mobile
coverage is generally poor in Ironbridge Gorge; a better signal for mobiles can be obtained at the top of
the track from the main road down to the club.

Due to bank erosion, the club-side path from the finish up to the 500m point is very narrow, uneven and
hazardous. All competitors and spectators are asked to take extra care should they chose to walk up the
side of the course and are reminded that this is entirely at their own risk. The far side of the river is
Power Station property and is out of bounds.
If you have any queries not covered by this document, please do not hesitate to ask at Registration or
Control.
And finally; any feedback or comments on the Regatta, please email the Regatta Committee on
[email protected]

Ironbridge Regatta Course
Please note that approximately 300m above the Saturday start and the same distance downstream of the steps, the river becomes very shallow. (These areas will be
buoyed). Please therefore stay within the boundaries of this plan both during racing and when practising.
Crews proceeding to the start should do so on the Power Station side, taking care to heed marshalling instructions so as not to impede races in progress. Due to the
restricted nature of the river no practice starts are allowed anywhere on the river. Crews are liable to disqualification if they disobey this instruction.
On the Sunday, to ensure racing is kept to time, please do not proceed beyond the 750m Saturday Umpire point. Should you do this you may be liable to an Official
Warning, as laid down in the British Rowing Rules of Racing

SATURDAY 25th & 26th JUNE 2016
Emergency Instructions for Crews and Officials
In an Emergency:
 Inform Control and the Co-ordinating Umpire immediately, giving the following details:
 Nature of the incident
 Where on the course
 If safety boat/First Aid required
 Race details, who is involved
 Stop all racing; Crews must follow instructions given by Umpires for their own safety and that of their fellow
competitors. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
 The Co-ordinating Umpire is to take charge of the incident in conjunction with the Regatta Safety Adviser.
 Co-ordinating Umpire will notify the appropriate services, i.e. Safety Boat, First Aid, etc.
 Capsized crews should stay with their boat. Crew Captains should take charge until the Safety Boat
arrives.
 All involved in the incident must be checked by a qualified First Aider (SARA)
 Racing will only recommence when the Co-ordinating Umpire/Regatta Safety Adviser are satisfied it is safe
to do so.
 To aid the Co-ordinating Umpire/Regatta Safety Adviser in managing the incident, no one should use the
radio unless requested by the Co-ordinating Umpire/Regatta Safety Adviser.
 Race commentary will be suspended unless it is required to help the emergency situation
 To clear the radio lines for emergency communications radio users will use the call ‘PAN PAN’. Upon
hearing this call, all users must end conversations whilst the emergency messages are communicated to
Control/Co-ordinating Umpire.
In the event of a thunderstorm:
 There may be temporary suspension of racing; the Race Committee and Safety Advisor will take charge.
 Crews must listen out carefully for and obey all instructions given by Umpires and race officials.
General:
 If there is a medical emergency on site during the day/night, the SARA team will be located next to the
refreshment marquee on the car park.
 Safety launch cover will be provided by SARA.
The Regatta Committee endeavour to provide a safe environment in accordance with British Rowing’s ‘Row
Safe’, although competitors, coaches and clubs are specifically reminded that every person attending the regatta,
including those competing, or officiating, do so entirely at their own risk and are solely responsible for:
 Their own safety;
 Ensuring that their equipment is safe and prepared to the standards required by British Rowing’s ‘Row
Safe’ and BR Rules of Racing. Any boats found failing to meet the standards shall be excluded;
 The strict observance of circulation pattern and British Rowing’s ‘Row Safe’;
 Competing crews determining together with their clubs, coaches, whether or not they are competent to
compete in the prevailing weather and stream conditions, and;
 Ensuring ‘a responsible adult’ accompanies each junior competing in the regatta to assist them in ‘loco
parentis’ with their responsibilities and assume responsibility for their welfare.
 In the interest of safety, any competitor that falls into the river, under any circumstances, will not be allowed
to race again until BR’s capsize procedure has been followed (showering, dry kit has been obtained) and
the First Aid representative (SARA) has authorised it.
