Please join us on Wednesday, June 25th at 1:30pm in the Party Room for an afternoon of songs and storytelling, Native American style! Using Native American flutes and drums, Ms. Katherine Quartz will share music, songs, and stories from her native Northern Paiute Tribe. Join Volunteer Coordinator of Bonnie Hayes, Shirley Toth, at Cornell Estates on June 18th at 1:30pm in the Party Room as she shares information on the shelter, the adoption process, community care of the animals, and some heartwarming adoption stories. Bonnie L. Hayes cared for over 4, 000 stray, neglected and abandoned animals in the past year. Although it seems that working with stray and abandoned animals is an impossible task, Bonnie Hayes is part of thousands of success stories every year. Before the arrival of European settlers, the Northern Piaute Tribe made their home in eastern California, western Nevada, and southeastern Oregon. Like many Native American cultures, the Northern Paiute use stories and songs to pass on their legends from one generation to the next. They make it their mission to find a home for each animal by working with a network of shelters and rescue groups in Oregon and Southwest Washington that may be able to help. Last year Bonnie Hayes reunited over 1,200 dogs and cats with their worried families and found new homes for the animals that were not claimed by their owners. A music therapist, Ms. Katherine Quartz uses both music and her talent as a Native American flutist to heal, entertain, and teach. “Better Hearing Health” Friday, June 20th 1:30 pm in the Cascade Room If you wish to donate to Bonnie Hayes Animal Shelter, please contact them at (503) 846-7041 to make a financial contribution or request their current wish list. Father's Day was founded in Spokane Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. If you have any ideas of what types of activities you would like to see when the Wahlbergs are here, please let Amanda or Diana in Community Programs know. Don’t miss this chance to have some fun with a great family! Stan Lasley is Back!
