Katherine Quartz:
Native American Flute and Storytelling
Wednesday, June 25th
1:30 pm in the Party Room
Ha'u mi nug' wa! Please
join us on Wednesday,
June 25th at 1:30pm in
the Party Room for an
afternoon of songs and
storytelling, Native
American style! Using
Native American flutes
and drums, Ms. Katherine
Quartz will share music, songs, and stories from her
native Northern Paiute Tribe.
Join Volunteer Coordinator
of Bonnie Hayes, Shirley
Toth, at Cornell Estates on
June 18th at 1:30pm in the
Party Room as she shares
information on the shelter,
the adoption process, community care of the animals,
and some heartwarming adoption stories.
Bonnie L. Hayes cared for over 4, 000 stray, neglected and abandoned animals in the past year. Although it seems that working with stray and abandoned animals is an impossible task, Bonnie Hayes
is part of thousands of success stories every year.
Before the arrival of European settlers, the Northern
Piaute Tribe made their home in eastern California,
western Nevada, and southeastern Oregon. Like many
Native American cultures, the Northern Paiute use stories and songs to pass on their legends from one generation to the next.
They make it their mission to find a home for each
animal by working with a network of shelters and
rescue groups in Oregon and Southwest Washington
that may be able to help. Last year Bonnie Hayes
reunited over 1,200 dogs and cats with their worried
families and found new homes for the animals that
were not claimed by their owners.
A music therapist, Ms. Katherine Quartz uses both
music and her talent as a Native American flutist to
heal, entertain, and teach.

Tie Day!
Monday, June 16th
Judging During Dinner 11am - 12:30pm
Fun with the Wahlbergs!
Every 2nd and 4th Friday
3:00 pm in the Cascade Room
Cornell Estates is honoring
Fathers everywhere by having a Tie Day! Choose your
favorite tie, whether it is
silly, wacky, or stylish, and
wear it to dinner on Monday, June 16th. There will
be prizes for some of the most unique ties – so do
your best to impress! Both men and women can participate in this fun event!
Meet the Wahlbergs! Tracy, Ryan (10), and Grant (13)
are here every 2nd and 4th Friday to do crafts and play
games! They are also interested in socializing and getting to know the residents here at Cornell Estates!
Father's Day was founded in Spokane Washington at
the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was
born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the
Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the
Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After
hearing a sermon about Mother's Day in 1909, she
told her pastor that fathers should have a similar
holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did
not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and
the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of
June.
If you have any ideas of what types of activities you
would like to see when the Wahlbergs are here, please
let Amanda or Diana in Community Programs know.
Don’t miss this chance to have some fun with a great
family!

Hollywood playing for many movie stars. You will be
entertained by both his music and stories.
Join Stan on June 3rd at 10:00 in the Main Living

Community Gardening
Every Tuesday
10:00 am
Now that the weather is warmer, there is plenty gardening to be done outside! Join master gardener, Arden Sheets and your neighbors to satisfy your green
thumb! Even if you aren’t a gardening expert, there
are many simple tasks for you to do.
The rhododendrons are
in bloom! Come see a
beautiful display of
color at the Lloyd
Baron Rhododendron
Garden. During the
spring and summer this
magnificent display of
flowers gives visitors
the opportunity to see many varieties of flowers
rarely seen in the Pacific Northwest.
The Community Gardening Club helps with general
maintenance of the outside courtyards at Cornell Estates. Tasks include watering, deadheading, planting,
and even the occasional tasting of a strawberry or tomato!
This club is a great way to get to know other residents, or to just enjoy some time outside in the fresh
air. If you would like to know more about Community Gardening, or are interested in joining, please
talk to Diana in Community Programs.
As you enter, the welcome sign reads, “This garden
was created as a place for you to enjoy and learn
more about rhododendrons, Hillsboro’s official city
flower.” The Lloyd Baron Rhododendron Garden
holds lots of history for Hillsboro as it is dedicated
to Lloyd Baron for all of his time and dedication to
making Hillsboro a beautiful place full of Rhododendrons.

A picnic lunch at Rood Bridge Park is also included
in this trip. Enjoy the delicious food the kitchen has
prepared surrounded by nature before exploring the

so sign up at the front desk to reserve your seat!
Did you know that in proper tea etiquette, in order for
one to not spill the hot liquid onto oneself, the proper
way to hold the vessel of a cup with no handle is to
place one’s thumb at the six o’clock position and
one’s index and middle fingers at the twelve o’ clock
position, while gently raising one’s pinkie up for balance?
Word Game: Words in a Word
See how many words you can create from the letters
in VACATION . Compare your list to ours in next
month’s newsletter!
While our tea may not be a s proper, it is a social
gathering you won’t want to miss. This is a great
time to catch up with friends while enjoying a cup of
tea and a scone. Each month, you will have the
pleasure of being accompanied by a guest staff member. Join us this month to find out who that will be!
