File N. 41 Picture Object Evening gown and stole Designer Year Gianfranco Ferré 1998-99 Label Season Fall-Winter Collection Ready-to-wear Look Inventory Size 42 (10) Materials Spun silver tulle, silver gray silk satin, mechanical black lace, silver yarn, black yarn, fine silver metal plates, silver scale paillettes (Langlois-Martin, Paris), clear glass beads Working processes Black mechanical lace inserts, hand/machine embroidery of fine metal plates (parallel or zigzag stitching), black thread machine embroidery (Ricami Laura, San Martino del Rio). Hand application of scale paillettes (Boutique del ricamo, Locate di Triulzi). Description Long straight snug fit evening gown in three cuts of tulle. Round neckline, long tight sleeves. Trumpet-train in back. Underneath, a gray satin slip. Raw-edge rectangular tulle stole. The gown features decorative off-center embroidery becoming all the richer on the left thanks to the application of sparkling silver scales, then ramifying on front and cuffs in a star/asymmetric spiral/bow with flaming arrow pattern. The stole has allover embroidery in various designs: suns moons & stars, spirals, a bow with flaming arrow. Inscriptions: “Naomi/626” and “5026/G700” on dress. Remarks A mermaid skin or a storybook sun moon & star dress? This is a gown serving solely as a surface on which to create an extraordinary celestial motif embroidery similar to the one Lesage did in the 1930s. It’s a clear reference to the heyday of haute couture, when flights of fantasy – and creative powers – knew no bounds.
