PLEASE COME TO ME, SHEEP
by Yoko Ikenoya
A little girl visited a stock farm one day with her
father. She saw the sheep wishing to give them a
pat. Their coat seemed so soft and fluffy. “Please
come to me.” she called out approaching them.
But what do you know, all of them turned around
and walked away from her.
She squatted down wondering what she had done
wrong when one sheep looked her in the eye. It
came closer to her and……?
CAMELLIA, A RESTAURANT FOR BIRDS
by Mari Otaguro
One cold winter day, the camellias came into
bloom. Now here we are, the Camellias’ Restaurant is open! There’s only one dish on the menu,
delicious nectar that is. Little birds and big birds
arrive chirping merrily.
Another camellia comes into bloom shortly after a
snowfall. Now there are two restaurants next to
each other. A mischievous boy samples some nectar,
too, promising not to tell others, as the restaurant was exclusively for birds! *TWN
A SPRING WALK IN MUDDY
FIELDS
by Nobuko Akashi
“Get your rubber boots on.” Grandpa calls. And
off they are to the fields. Spring has come. The soil
is showing now. The boy steps on the mud, then
the slushy mud. What a feeling! Listen to those
sounds! He walks foot by foot on the lingering
snow making crunching sounds. Splashing puddles and standing on dry grass barefooted, he feels
the long-awaited spring is there under his feet.
SHOW ME YOUR BELLY,
PLEASE!
A HUNGRY BUTTERFLY IN
THE SUMMER FOREST
Let’s take a look at the side we usually don’t see:
the belly-side of some creatures. It starts with a
ladybug. She has a beautiful red-colored back, but
her belly? Well, it is pitch black! So we go around
asking some creatures to show us their bellies.
Bellies are delicate, therefore we have to be ever so
gentle with them. Wouldn’t it be fun to find surprises?
In the dense green of a summer forest, a sweetand-sour aroma was in the air. A hungry butterfly
fluttered to locate the source. Soon enough it
found the spot. It was the smell of sap! Already
thronged with visitors, there was no space to get
in. It carried on to the next spot which was also
crowded. Even a fight started in front of his eyes.
Will the poor butterfly get any sap?
PLAY WITH A STRAW IN
THE BATH
MYSTERY OF MT. SAW
Here is one of the things most children adore; playing with a straw! They do it all the time with their
drinks. Blowing into it and spilling the contents,
sounds familiar? How would it be if we did it in the
bath? A little girl rushes to the bathroom and her
baby brother follows. With all their hearts, they
play with a straw blowing bubbles, inflating them,
connecting them, experimenting and giggling.
Mt. Saw was a grand mountain with four zigzags
on the summit, hence the name. The skirts spread
out gracefully. My brother and I adored this mountain. One day we drove to our cousin’s. My brother
was the first to spot the strange change. Mt. Saw
now only had three zigzags. The car continued and
eventually she lost all of her zigzags. No ‘saw’ on
the summit anymore! How could that be?
TAKE OFF, DRAGONFLY!
HELLO, SEE YOU TOMORROW
by Kazuko Shimazu
by Yuko Onari
by Tatsuhide Matsuoka
Dragonflies are aquatic when they are young. The
larva comes out of the water to emerge and becomes mature in the fullness of time. It chooses a
night to crawl up a stem of marsh. A subtle yet
bold force of nature unfolds. Let’s observe the
breathtaking process of a Lesser Emperor’s birth
and celebrate its take off.
by Hiroshi Tateno
by Masahito Ohashi
illustrated by Hideo Ito
by Naoko Kudo
illustrated by Koshiro Hata
A little girl is out with her father. He always greets
his fields before working. “Hello.” he says and the
girl follows suit. She spots a round, smooth rock
and greets it, then some ants, some wood louses, a
lizard and a grasshopper, all her new friends appear. As the dusk closes in, she asks the rock if it
might want to come for a sleep over. They return
together calling out “See you all tomorrow!”
TURNING ON A FLASHLIGHT
by Akiko Miyakoshi
I’ m not afraid of the dark because I have something special! A little boy holds out his flashlight
waking his brother to explore the obscurity.
Doesn’ t the room look so different from the day
time? The round-shaped light illuminates the
things in the room. Wriggle the flashlight and the
shadows dance! What about our yard from the
window? Will this beam reach the stars?
ZOO IN THE FIRST SNOW
by Misako Namiki
illustrated by Yasuko Ikeda
I TICKLED FLOWERS!
by Taeko Tada illustrated by Eriko Hirano
Flowers look up to you in a big smile. How charming they are!
You want them to smile even more and tickle them gently. Oh?
Some kind of powder sticks to your finger? Turn the pages and
meet various flowers in different hues. The encounter with pollen
introduces botany to young children. They discover that bees and
butterflies seem to tickle the flowers, too.

The first snowfall for the season has arrived. We
wonder how the animals in the zoo are doing. The
lions gaze into the air watching the crystals. The
Japanese Monkeys huddle together to keep warm.
The elephants start making snow balls and…wow,
one ate it up! Naturally the Polar bear jumps
around in joy. Have you ever been to the zoo on a
snowy day?

There are times in life when you have to make a
choice. Choosing can be filled with expectations
as well as anxiety. Each facing pages offer such a
situation, daring you to make a choice of your
own. Which route should we take to the summit?
To eat or not to eat the weird-looking pastries?
Can we rescue the poor puppy, but how? The bold
and clear illustrations surely enhance the choices!

The Ebony Jewelwing is a dragonfly with jetblack wings. The female has a black body as well.
The male’s body, however, is a greenish glowing
color. In wetlands, they mate in the shape of a
heart. The female lays her eggs while he stands on
watch. The larva is aquatic and overwinters underwater. It is the following summer that it becomes a dragonfly. A precise observation picture
book on the ecology of Ebony Jewelwings.
I was walking in the woods one late summer when
suddenly a small twig fell on me. It had an acorn
on it. I noticed it was not the only one. There were
lots of them on the ground, all with an acorn.
Who dropped these acorns and why? Looking at
them carefully I spotted a small hole right under
each cap. What’s with these little holes? An experiment starts to find out about acorn weevils.
A TRIP ON A MONORAIL
FAMILIAR MEDICINAL PLANTS
Have you ever been on a monorail train? It is an
elevated railway system with trains suspended
from a single rail. It carries people from a terminal
station to a neighboring town on the shore. You
can view the towns from above as if you were a
bird. The rails are built to fit the landscape below
bending and rolling as needed. During the trip in
this book, you can see how monorails operate and
experience their charm.
Grandma tells us about the medicinal plants
found at the hill and pond in the rear of her
house. She lives harmoniously with them so her
backyard serves her as a medicine cabinet. The
plants come out from spring towards summer.
Takashi and Mitchan learn how effective some
plants can be and that Mother Nature is amazingly strong, abundant and helpful.

it? Stick your index finger in it and turn the pages.

your finger could be with some imagination. This
unique and ingenious book is sure to trigger your

us since ancient times. They are brown and smaller,
inhabiting in the northern regions. They live in
limpid streams feeding on fallen leaves. Let’s find
out about the ecology of Japanese crayfish.
THE LIFE OF INSECTS IN
GRASS
by Yukihisa Tokuda
illustrated by Kiyoshi Takahashi
It is just an ordinary patch of grass. Nothing special about
it, but if you squat down and take a good look you’ll see a
completely different world. Tiny ants you didn’t even notice are heading for something. Your eyes shift to a cocoon
and something is coming out of it. A ladybug is escaping,
a bee nesting….there are so many dramas there. Watercolors with a tender touch sketch each drama carefully.
by Yoshie Takayanagi
illustrated by Koshiro Hata

OUR LIFE ON A LITTLE ISLAND
IN THE PACIFIC
Have you ever thought about what ‘TIME’ is? Defining
this word is not easy. While boring classes and meetings
seem long, time seems to fly when you’re having a great
time or doing something you really enjoy. Why is that?
‘Time’, in the sense of being measured by a clock, is not
the same as ‘time’, in the sense of what our hearts feel.
We’ll find out how differently time flows and why that is.

which has almost nothing to do with money. How do
they get food? Do the children go to school? The author
tells us about the fulfilling life in the Pacific.

by Makoto Ichikawa
illustrated by Akio Yoshino
by Kumi Togawa
illustrated by Jo Yokouchi
The Iriomote Cats are now an endangered species and
exist only on the island of Iriomote which is part of
Okinawa, Japan. About 50 years ago, this phantom wild
cat was captured and a couple came to stay with my
family. My father was a retired journalist and a prominent animal novelist who was an expert on animals.
This is a record of the two years we lived with them.
by Katsuhiko Sakiyama
illustrated by Shigeo Nishimura
by Yusuke Yoshino
Sharks have existed on earth from approximately 400
million years ago. They are nicknamed “the complete
being” as not much change can be found regarding their
appearances. Perhaps there was not much left to evolve
so they stayed as they were. Awesome and dynamic
photographs display a variety of different sharks along
with comments on the characteristics of them.

HOW MANY LEAVES ON A TREE?
TREE-CLIMBING GORILLAS

state since the old days. Freight shipping still plays a
very important role in logistics today. Natural resources
are imported and motor vehicles, electronic devices and
other items are exported by them. Let’s look into the
history of various vessels and each one’s characteristics.
Exquisite cutout pictures explain them in details.
There is a dogwood tree in our garden. It is about 4 meters tall. We count the tiers of the branches learning that
it is about 7 to 8 years old. So just how many leaves does
it carry? During the summer, children gather to join a
counting scheme. What is your wild guess? Beautiful
photographs capture the dogwood tree in four seasons.
Gorillas are the largest extant primates. We all love seeing them in the zoo. But did you know that there are
actually two kinds in the wild? The one in the zoo are

Tokio was not really happy with school life. To
begin with, when he was surrounded by others
and various noises, he felt overwhelmed and perplexed. One day, a classmate teased Tokio, as
usual, about the stuffed tiger he always carried.
That was when a strange ‘something’ emerged
and swallowed the kid down. Taken aback, Tokio
shouted, “Why did you do that?” The ‘something’
turned out to be his ‘imaginary’ friend Miké. Hilarious incidents pop up
one after another to convey an important message.

THE SPIRIT OF ARTS
MESSAGE FROM THE REMINISCENCES
OF PICTURE BOOKS
by Masako Yamaguchi
illustrated by Komako Sakai
As an adult, it is quite difficult to understand how our children accept the picture books we read them. Through five years of research,
the author discovers that even though we think we don’t remember
the picture books read to us, some are, in fact, tucked deep inside
our memories. Sometimes the vivid illustrations or perhaps a certain
phrase suddenly captures our memory. The interesting study covers
this topic from various angles and plenty of examples.
