August 2013 2013 OFFICERS MEMBER OF THE MONTH Dana Cook 2005 Mustang GT Race Car owned by Don and Dana Cook Driver – Dana Cook PRESIDENT JEFF MINX 480-748-8185 [email protected] VICE PRESIDENT Don Cook 480-201-2158 [email protected] SECRETARY Sharon Maloley 602-448-8138 [email protected] TREASURER Doris Minx Pending e-mail SGT. AT ARMS Andy Sievers 602-544-0192 The car was bought from a Ford dealership in November 2004 in Simi Valley, CA but its destiny was to be one of the fastest modular motor race cars in the US. Once torn apart, the car started out with a 5.4L modular motor with twin 74mm turbos. One cloudy day at a car show a Berge, a friend of ours asked if we would like to buy a race car together. We looked at each other and Don saw the spark in my eye. We looked over a few cars and talked at length at what this was going to mean…for all of us. We decided on one and in December 2008, headed to Ventura, CA to look at an 8 second, 170 mph race car. We were all still unsure what we were going to do with this car, but decided to go ahead and buy it anyway. We were banking on the fact that we were all competent adults that had specific skills and together we would figure it out. Sharon Maloley 2013 Secretary Member of the Month Cont. In January of 2009, off I go to Gainesville, FL to attend the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School where I earn my competition drag racing license. As soon as I got back it was time to get in the car and take her for a spin. My first “attempt” at launching was about as scary as they come. People said they could hear me screaming in the stands yet I’m not sure I recall screaming...well, maybe a little. I spent the majority of 2009 learning how to drive and proving that I was a capable driver here for the long haul. I did compete in one local race in which I was awarded the quickest elapsed time (ET) for the year for Arizona’s Fastest Street Cars (AFSC). By the end of 2009, I had set a new record for the car putting it into the 7.9X range and putting myself on the short list of fastest modular motors. In 2010, I competed in local and west coast races and earned the quickest and fastest (ET and MPH) car for the year in AFSC. In 2011, due to extenuating circumstances, we bought out the other owner’s of the car. We were now on own to make the decisions in what direction we wanted to go. We updated the car with bigger turbos and went to a 3 speed transmission. The car was down most of the season but we still managed to make a couple races. We spent 2012 trying for a championship and accomplished that. We made every race and won the 2012 Outlaw Champion for Arizona’s Fastest Street Cars. It was a very proud moment for me and my team. At the last race we (probably more like I) blew up the motor but still won the round. At the point, I had already clinched the championship so we loaded it back on the trailer and celebrated our championship season. In January of this year we pulled the motor and sent it back to the builder, Modular Motorsports Racing, in Camarillo, CA. With two other cars in the team, there are plenty of opportunities to learn what works and what doesn’t on these motors. After many discussions, we decided to once again update the car so we can be competitive among the ever evolving class. Currently we are building one of the 2013 5.8L modular motors to go with our pair of 80mm turbos. We still have the 3 speed transmission and will also be transitioning to alcohol (methanol)l as a fuel instead of the racing gas we have been running all these years. We will also be updating the chassis to become a “backhalf” car as well as lightening up the total package to include lexan windows. We are confident these changes will enable us to be competitive in our True Ten 5/XDR class and hopefully even enable us to win a few races this year. Looking back, I reflect on all the good times, good people and all around fun we’ve had in the last five years. It has been something we’ve been able to do with the family. And of course, we could not have gotten this far without sponsors that have helped us over the years. Modular Motorsports Racing had been our primary sponsor all these years and continues to support and believe in what we do. They have also contributed to the Copperstate Mustang Club. I can’t end without thanking my husband Don for everything he has done for me in helping me live my dream of driving one of these cars. How many husbands can say their wife drives a race car at 200mph in the quarter mile? Signature: _______________________________________________________________ Date:____________________________________ Proposed 1966 Taillights I know I shared a picture in the June newsletter but new pictures have surfaced of the proposed 1966 taillights that never were. Think about how cool these would have been, plus adding a sequential taillight wiring harness. But unfortunately they weren’t cost effective. Proposed 1966 Taillights They did make at least three prototype models with the proposed taillights. Wonder where they are today.
