March 2016 Volume 23, Issue 02 Special Interest Information: NEW MEETING LOCATION! Remember, we are meeting at Lakeland Ford on Memorial Blvd. for all of our 2016 meetings! Who wants to be a Member Spotlight? We could use a volunteer to step up at the March meeting! We could use some member submissions for the club’s email blast. Please forward any funny Mustang stuff or videos to your editor ASAP! The Saddle Bags The official newsletter of the Imperial Mustangs of Polk County A Regional Group of the Mustang Club of America Hoofbeats by Terry Blakely I want to thank everyone who worked the show and made it so very successful. I must admit I was nervous this year having changed venues and dates, but the show was great. I have received feedback from a number of participants who were very happy with the venue and look forward to next year. If you were at the show, you heard my announcement regarding the surgery I was having Monday, February 29th. I have been having problems with heartburn and gas for about three years. I had a stress test in 2014 and they found nothing to be concerned about. I had been to a lung doctor, a gastroenterologist, been to the University of South Florida in Tampa for special tests and still no definitive diagnosis. Yet, the heartburn and gas continued with much pain and discomfort. In January, I went back to my primary doctor and he decided another stress test was in order. This stress test showed an area of concern so it was off to have a cardiac catheterization on Feb. 16th with the idea that I might need a stent or two. That was far from what I needed. They found multiple blockages too severe for any stent. On Monday, Feb. 29th, I had quintuple by-pass surgery. The doctors said they would fix everything they could find and apparently they were serious. Because I have not had a previous heart attack, my heart muscle was good. If my heart had been damaged in any way, the number of bypasses would have been (Continued on Page 6) Pony Tales by Mark Houlahan Wow! What a show we had two weeks ago! I must say, for the first time at a new venue I think things went extremely well. Registration, photos, parking, and even judging seemed to go off without a hitch. I know we were a little light on judges this year, and with the expected increase in car count next year, as our show date will not fall on the same weekend as the Mid-Florida Mustang show, we’ll need more judging help. Something to keep in mind for sure. Otherwise the only complaints I heard were out of our control, and that’s food availability within our show, and the so called “tram” that was nothing more than a glorified six-passenger golf cart. Hopefully we can get some food trucks into our show area for the day and possibly see to it that Carlisle Events is able to use a larger transport, possibly something from Sun-n-Fun. I want to thank all those that pitched in to help on the day of show, as these people are what make the day work without issue and help our guest. Most of all though I want to thank Terry & Mary Ann for taking the monumental task of registration and all of the other “behind the scenes” show prep that takes several months of their time leading up to the show itself. Without the Blakelys laying the ground work our annual show would not be continuing on. I know last month I said we had planned to look at replacing Dawn’s Explorer Sport Trac with a Fusion in the coming months now that she’s (Continued on Page 6) The Saddle Bags Page 2 of 6 Secretary’s Report by Robin Van Gilder Call to Order: President Terry Blakely called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. The Mustang had been released in April 1964, barely two years prior, and Ford had already sold one million Mustangs! Ford built a commemorative one millionth Mustang, a white convertible, with “Millionth Mustang” lettering on its sides for assembly line photos. Ford would later build a limited run of Anniversary Gold Mustang hardtops to celebrate (my car is a replica of one). Some people have had more if you can imagine that. Tuesday morning I was moved to the cardiac unit where I remained until Friday. The operation went well and the doctors expect a full recovery. The doctor told me my heart is in better shape than when I came in and I should be able to do all and more than what I was doing. Having said that, I still have a way to go. There will be home health care for a while as well as physical therapy. Winter Haven Hospital has a gym that I can go to and exercise (after a couple of weeks at home) with supervision. Right now I will have good days and not so good days. I am not up to visits or even phone calls for a while. I am reading emails. Your prayers and good wishes are appreciated. We can't say enough good things about the cardiac program at Winter Haven Hospital. The staff—doctors, nurses, technicians, housekeeping, business— have all been outstanding. Winter Haven Hospital is home to the Bostick Heart Center and has been focusing on cardiac care for about 10 years. My operation took only 3 hours instead of the average of 5-6 hours. This reduced the amount of time I was on the heartlung machine which is a good thing. Everyone took time to explain things, sometimes more than once, and answered all of our questions. If I had to do this, and apparently I did, I am glad this hospital is so close and so good at this. Our son, Rob, and daughter, Denise, flew in on Saturday before the surgery and stayed until Tuesday. It meant a lot to have them here with us for the surgery. So, March is pretty much booked at home. However, I am still planning to attend the National Mustang show in St. Augustine the middle of April. Life goes on. April 15th-17th brings the MCA National show to St. Augustine. You must be an MCA member to participate in this show but it a great opportunity to enter an MCA show without having to leave the state. And in May, the love bugs put the cars away for a couple of weeks. If you have any ideas for other club activities, bring them up at the meeting. working, but she’s since been notified her position, though still a temporary one, has been extended to an eight to ten month assignment with the ability for it to become permanent an even higher chance. Couple that with the Explorer hitting 241K miles we decided to consider a replacement a little sooner. I was thinking possibly in May or June, but just doing some online window shopping I found a private one-owner lease return 2014 Fusion Titanium with just 18K on it with all the options we wanted (save for one) and the rarely optioned 19inch wheel package. We got a great deal on it and it came home last Wednesday. To say the least: Happy Wife, Happy Life. Right? See you at the meeting! Mark
