MUSTANG MANIA - Emerald Coast Regional Mustang Club
Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 MUSTANG MANIA Official Newsletter of the Emerald Coast Regional Mustang Club Commando Team Commando Cruise – Keeping with the precedent established over the past several years, the ECRMC took home the club participation trophy at this year’s Commando Cruise-In. Hurlburt Services put on their usually great show once again, but they did learn the same lesson we did at our show last April regarding computer scoring. Despite the scoring snag, the show was its traditionally enjoyable experience for all in attendance. Despite the well-rounded show field representing the varied genres of all things gearhead, Mustangs again dominated the show grounds. The decision to move the Commando Cruise to the armament museum three years ago has proven to be an excellent change for the Cruise-In. Thanks to Ken Michelson and Kara Kerwood for the pictures contained within this issue! Page 1 of 16 Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 The Emerald Coast Regional Mustang Club P.O. Beef-O-Brady’s is firing up their grill and ECRMC members need only show their ID cards to get a special discount. The show runs from 10 to 3. While members are welcome to stop in at any time during the show and hang out, join us at the Swamp parking lot on Okaloosa Island at 9:15 – 9:30 for a group cruise into the Market Shops. ECRMC Christmas Party– December 6th at Suds n Cinema on Hwy 98 in downtown Fort Walton Beach, we are having our annual party from noon to 3 PM. All members are invited to come celebrate with us – there will be a “Dirty Santa” gift exchange – please keep all gifts under $25.00. Pizza, soda, and popcorn are provided, but members are encouraged to bring additional snacks. ECRMC Stickers – A new batch of club window stickers has just arrived. If you did not get a sticker when you joined the club, see Brian or Jane at the next club event to get your free sticker. The new stickers are smaller and can be purchased for $1.50 each. Only four of the big version remain, so if you want the bigger sticker, act now! Destin Christmas Parade– The Destin Christmas Parade is scheduled for December 13th. Those interested in driving in the parade, look for more information next month at the meeting and in the Mania. Navarre Homecoming Parade – Navarre High School invited the ECRMC to join this year’s Homecoming parade, so Ray and Jane Grater, Ed Keeney, Will Foster, Bill Curtis, Todd Bonasera, and Tom Guarino heeded the call and represented Ford’s finest in the parade. ECRMC Membership – ECRMC membership has swelled during the recent event schedule resulting in a record setting year for the ECRMC. As this issue is written, we have set the bar at 101 members! We are all witnesses to history as we follow this record setting year with the 20th Anniversary year for the ECRMC – coinciding with the 45th year of the Mustang! Page 4 of 16 Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 Feed the Coast Cruise In – The first annual food drive Show n Shine at the Fort Walton High School resulted in the collection of over 1100 non-perishable food items for Okaloosa Caring and Sharing. The Corvette club had a strong showing and easily dominated the food donations to win the 6 ft trophy and bragging rights. Special thanks go out to the Fort Walton High School Junior ROTC cadets for helping out with the setup, tear-down, and lunch preparations at the Feed the Coast food drive. Among the cadets supporting the food drive were Brad Lingard, Joe Clay, Carl Clay, Matthew Boolas, Megan Semmler, Nancy Dean, Joey Ballard, Chris Linnbaum, Alex Mecom, Ricky Jones, Jermaine Brown, and Spencer Rhodes. Once again, thanks to these cadets for their support of the food drive. In addition to the cars on display at the Feed the Coast Show –n-Shine and food drive, the crowd was entertained by a demonstration from the local American Taekwondo Association (ATA) schools. After the crowd was amazed by the skills of the ATA demo team, the FWB High Drum Corps provided a musical reprieve from the show by showing off their skills with their own demonstration. Page 5 of 16 Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 Additional thanks go out to John Williams for stepping up at quite literally the last minute to provide the sound system and DJ capabilities to keep the music and announcements coming all day long during the food drive. Sound man and Cobra owner, what a combination! Too bad we didn’t the opportunity to hear John play his guitar. Maybe at our show in April! New & Improved Website – Webmaster Jeff has been hard at work updating the ECRMC website. Surf over to www.EmeraldCoastMustangClub.net to see for yourself. Old versions of the e-manias are even now available on the web! While on our site, register for the forums and join in as fellow local stangers discuss just about anything Mustang related – and some things that have nothing to do with cars at all! In the past, many impromptu cruises and hanging outs were organized on the forums. Our website also features many more pictures from all of our events. Charity selections – At the November meeting, club membership voted to donate $500.00 each to Walton Cares, Inc., Silver Sands School for the Handicapped, Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge, and PAWS. Silver Springs Roundup – The January Ocala Mustang Roundup has already reached 1,000 registrants, so the free registrations are gone. Show packages are still available for $21.00 a car. There are still a few rooms remaining in our reserved block, so check with President Kara for details on booking a room. New Sponsor – Due to the ever vigilant member Paul Forakis, Magic Muffler has generously offered ECRMC members a 10% discount on all work when you present your membership card. Page 6 of 16 Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 Remember to support our club’s sponsors. Stop by and thank them for their help in making ECRMC the greatest regional mustang club. Page 7 of 16 Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 Page 8 of 16 Volume 19 Number 11 November 2008 Cruisin the Coast – Gulfport Mississippi held the Cruisin’ the Coast extravaganza in early October, so the ECRMC sent our racing team to represent the Emerald Coast. Here is their story as told by team member Paul “Iron Man” Forakis. Bill, Jeff, Elveta, and I started out at the Fort Walton Target and cruised over to Foley for lunch at Lamberts before driving the scenic route to Biloxi, where we checked into our Casino Resorts rooms. After getting settled into our homes away from home, we were off to Gulfport Dragway’s 1/4 mile track. Bill blasted to a best time of 12.50 on his new slicks while Jeff broke into the13’s with White Lightning. Paul won the second round with a 13.73 – winning a plaque, $75.00, a Bud-lite hat, and a visit from the Bud-lite girls! Paul led the entire third and final round before being beaten on the last run of the round. Throughout the bracket racing rounds, Jeff’s White Lightning and Paul’s Blue Thunder ran neck to neck with Jeff claiming 6 of 8 runs, most by mere inches! The next day, we went to the swap meet at the Coliseum and ran into fellow ECRMC’er Corky. Corky was in need of a ride back to Fort Walton (as explained in a few pages) and since ECRMC membership has its privileges, we gave him a ride home. We club members do have to stick together, after all. Corky purchased this Mustang from its original owner in 1993 near Dallas, Texas. It soon became the first “Classic” Model to join the ECRMC! Corky began the Resto-modding in 1997 and the plain-jane fastback emerged in 2006 with a 5.0 EFI sporting an Explorer GT-40 intake, 73 mm MAF, 65 mm Throttle body, and JBA mid-length headers. The 300 horses are shifted by a Baumann Stalled 4R70W transmission and put o the ground via an 8” (3.25) rear axle. Future additions include a TFS stage 1 cam, fiberglass rear springs, intermittent wipers, and Cobra style front strut rods. This stang is so hot to trot that recently while getting some homegrown maintenance performed, The GT-350C jumped the stands (which are for sale, by the way – see Corky for details) and landed on Karol’s Honda. This car really doesn’t like imports! The Honda wound up the worse for wear while the Mustang suffered only minor damage.
