I would like to start out by saying it is an honor to be MOCSEM’s President! This is something I could have never imagined happening five years ago when I joined the club! I met Mark Berk, Neil Holcomb and Jerry Holmes at the Church of Christ car show. I talked with them for almost the whole show and joined MOCSEM that day on the spot! But never in my wildest dreams did I expect to EVER be President of this club! Over the years I have worked with many different Boards of Directors and met many members, old and new. It has come along with a lot of great surprises. I love the fact that some charter members of MOCSEM are still very active! I have recruited many members (including handing people my card at stoplights) and have met many people in the Mustang industry (way too many to name). But it has been a pleasure so far, and I am looking forward to an amazing 2010 show season and year for MOCSEM. Continued on Page 3… Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com Page 2 The Accelerator About the Club The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan (MOCSEM) was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made available. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair of the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the 2005 GT or the 2007 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions. A Word from Our Prez …continued from Page 1 This is my first full year as President after the tragic loss of our former President, Neil Holcomb. I can NEVER fill his shoes as President, I can only hope to come close! I feel I have a great relationship with everyone in the club and on the board, and I feel I have brought a lot of great things to MOCSEM over the past five years. As President I will not change that thought process whatsoever! We have three new board members for 2010, Rich KocanTreasurer, Craig Zygmunt-Editor and Webmaster, and Gary Kohn-Trustee. Gary accepted a board appointment to the Trustee position after Phil Smith voluntarily retired from the position. Additionally, Sam Marra stepped down from his position as MCA Rep and Mike Sove agreed to remain on as MCA Rep for 2010. Please help me welcome them to the club and help them transition into their board positions! Please look for great things from the club in 2010 and only about three months or so until we take our babies out from their winter naps! Craig’s Comments By Craig Zygmunt, MOCSEM Editor Here we are at the beginning of a new year (and a new decade), and I am pleased to be taking on a bigger role within MOCSEM as a board member and Editor of The Accelerator. I want to thank the entire club for their support but especially Ken Janus for his effort as Editor. I’m sure everyone would agree that Ken brought a new level of professionalism to The Accelerator and I’m confident he’ll be an even greater asset to the club as Vice President. Don’t forget to check the web site, www.mocsem.com, for the most up-to-date information about the club and club events. If you haven’t done so already, you should also consider signing up on the web site for club email announcements which gets the latest information sent right to your email box. And definitely try to attend general meetings because you just can’t beat the opportunity to learn and share information about MOCSEM and Mustang in-person with other enthusiasts. If you ever have any comments or suggestions or would like to contribute an article to The Accelerator, I would love to hear from you. My contact info is on Page 2 of this newsletter. In fact, I’ve even heard someone suggest that there was too much on the calendar. I consider this a compliment. Certainly, we don’t expect anyone to attend every event on the calendar, but we want to make sure that no matter who you are there will be something of interest to you. In fact, many of the events listed on the calendar aren’t even MOCSEM events, but are instead area events that may interest club members. Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com Page 4 The Accelerator For the coming year, in addition to the regular assortment of cruises, cruise-ins and shows, we’ll be planning track events, sporting events, nights out and overnight events. Let me know if you have an idea for an event. In January we’ll be attending a Plymouth Whalers hockey game at the Compuware Arena in Plymouth. Whalers’ games offer exceptional hockey for a reasonable price. MOCSEM members can purchase VIP seats for just $13 each. Tickets must be purchased from April Zygmunt prior to January 8th. In February we’re trying something new by having a Valentine Party at Tim & Sally’s Awesome Eats in Canton. This is a chance to have a night out with that special someone for Valentine’s Day. Tim & Sally’s will be open exclusively for MOCSEM and there’ll be music, food, cocktails, 50/50 drawing and more. Cost is $8 per person which includes hors d’oeuvres and soda. A cash bar will also be available. You can buy tickets in advance from April Zygmunt or at the door. Our first show event of 2010 will be the Detroit Autorama in February. MOCSEM will be participating with a club display this year. If you are interested in participating, you must submit an entry form along with a check for the entry fee to Mike Rey no later than the January general meeting on January 12th. You can get a form from the web site or by contacting Mike Rey. Mike will send in all the entry forms together and Autorama officials will determine how many and which cars are accepted. If your car is not accepted your check will be returned to you. Contact Mike Rey if you have any questions about Autorama. The Burgers’ Mustang on the Track at MIS MOCSEM’s Charitable December By April Zygmunt, MOCSEM Social Director Christmas is the season for giving and MOCSEM did not disappoint at the December general meeting. The meeting started out with a visit from Santa who had gifts for 21 boys and girls, picked just for them. And club members brought a big pile of toys that were graciously accepted by Marines representing Toys for Tots. For the latest and most detailed information about upcoming club events and other area events, visit www.mocsem.com or contact April Zygmunt. Never too Old to be Young Again By Bob and Judy Burger, MOCSEM Members Our 2004 Mustang is featured on the cover this month’s Accelerator. This Mustang came into our family in September 2007, the result of my turning 70 and watching the movie The Bucket List. The bucket list is a list of unfinished dreams you have not fulfilled in your life. Having a Mustang was at the top of mine. The 2004 6-cylinder Pony package Mustang has had the following modifications made: dual stainless steel Magnaflow mufflers, window tinting, sequential taillights, hood struts, shorty antenna, Mach 1 chin spoiler and grille delete kit, and went from 16 inch to 17 x 9 Mustang Cobra R chrome +24 wheels with new 245/452zr-17 95Y Eagle F1 A/S BW tires. The most memorable event with the Mustang was last July when my wife, Judy, and I attended the Onsted Kiwanis Club Car Show. The highlight was driving our Mustang on the track at Michigan International Speedway. Our Mustang makes me feel young every time I drive it. Marines from Toys for Tots Accept MOCSEM Donation As the result of another successful Mustang Memories show in August, MOCSEM was able to present donations to representatives from several charities at the meeting: The Iacocca Foundation – $1,200 American Cancer Society – $1,000 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - $1,000 American Heart Association – $1,000 Humane Society of Monroe County – $500 Children’s Hospital of Michigan – $500 Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Salvation Army – $500 Angela Hospice – $500 Page 5 The 5.0 is Back! By Craig Zygmunt, MOCSEM Editor Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – $500 It’s the hard work of club members that makes these donations possible. Lee Iacocca Award By Mike Rey, MOCSEM President Lee Iacocca, as you probably know was President of Ford Motor Company, and CEO of Chrysler where he did the impossible and saved the company from bankruptcy. His contribution to the automobile industry spans nearly 50 years. What many people don’t know is Lee Iacocca is also an influential philanthropist. He was instrumental in leading one of the largest public fundraising campaigns raising over $400 million to restore the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. His passion for the last 25 years has been supporting research thru the Iacocca Foundation in order to cure diabetes, the disease responsible for taking his wife, Mary. Diabetes is a disease that is growing at an alarming rate across all demographics here in the US and abroad. In the US alone there are 26 Million people diagnosed with diabetes and an actual health care cost of $175 billion dollars a year and growing. 5.0-Liter 4-Valve Ti-VCT V-8 It appears that all the rumors and speculation were true. Ford has officially announced specifications for the 2011 Mustang and the big news is the 5.0 is back! Plus much more! The GT’s all-new 5.0-liter four-valve V-8 engine produces 412 horsepower and 390 ft-lbs of torque while delivering improved fuel economy (25 mpg highway). It doesn’t get any better than that! The 5.0 features aluminum block and heads, Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT), specially designed tubular exhaust headers, deep-sump stamped steel oil pan with increased capacity, pistoncooling jets and much more. It is because of this important cause; together with his love for “car guys” that Mr. Iacocca agreed to lend his name to an award for car shows and clubs with special people who are worthy of this award! This most prestigious award celebrates auto enthusiasts on multiple levels including character, community involvement, integrity and, of course a level of excellent presentation of their vehicle and most importantly their love and dedication to our hobby. The Lee Iacocca Award has become the most coveted award there is in the whole car show/car club circuit. It is a great pleasure and honor to have a part of MOCSEM recognized by this amazing Award. There are less than 20 Lee Iacocca awards on a yearly basis and an approval process is a big part of it, I want to thank Joe Errante to turning me on to this idea, as it has come as a great honor to be involved with this award and foundation! At our December general meeting, it was a privilege for me to present the Lee Iacocca award to Kathy Holcomb in memory of her husband, the club’s former president and my friend, Neil Holcomb. 2011 Mustang GT Driving dynamics have also been improved for 2011 with the addition of specially tuned Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS), 13.2-inch front 11.8-inch rear vented disc brakes and an enhanced suspension featuring an improved rear lower control arm and stiffened rear stabilizer bushings. Transmission choices include a 6speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. A Brembo brake upgrade package will be available which includes 14-inch vented front disc brakes from the GT500, 19-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires. Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com Page 6 The Accelerator The look of the GT will benefit from the addition of 5.0 fender badges, a new engine cover, 160 mph speedometer, and three new colors including Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat, Race Red and Ingot Silver. And of course there have been improvements in NVH throughout the car. While the return of the 5.0 is the big news for 2011, it’s not the only news. Even the V-6 Mustang benefits from a huge gain in power. The new all-aluminum 3.7-liter Duratec 24valve V-6 uses Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) to adjust the valve train. Revving to a 7,000 rpm redline, the engine produces 305 hp and 280 ftlbs of torque, a huge improvement over the current model’s 210 hp and 240 ft-lbs of torque. The V-6 also features an all-new dual exhaust system that’s mellow at idle but howls at full throttle. memory. Marty Soushanian from JDRF accepts $1000. Jerry Kovach from the Humane Society of Monroe County accepts $500. Barb Paul from Angela Hospice accepts $500. Sandy Kollinger accepts $500 for the Salvation Army. Peggy Shriver, President and CEO of the Michigan chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society accepts $500.Kelly Landis from Children’s Hospital accepts $500 and will put this toward the patient family support fund which aids families with emergency needs: transportation, taxes, utilities, etc. Linda Rankin brought two Marines with her to accept our donation of toys for Toys for Tots.We also gave $1000 to the American Heart Association, but their rep was unable to attend. THE LEE IACOCCA FOUNDATION AWARD: Mike Rey awarded the Lee Iacocca Foundation Award to Neil Holcomb who was one of about 20 in the country to receive this special award honoring people who have made a contribution in the auto industry and who help preserve the love and history of the automobile. The award was accepted in his memory by his widow, Kathy Holcomb. The $1200 donation to the Lee Iacocca Foundation goes to diabetes research. We thank Joe Errante for encouraging us to nominate Neil for this very special award. MEMBERSHIP: 360 active members 3.7-Liter Ti-VCT V-6 SOCIAL DIRECTOR: We are looking for 7-10 cars of each generation for the Cleveland Auto Show March 19-21, 2010. December 19 is the Christmas party at 6pm--$15 per person. We want to schedule an outing to a Whaler’s game. We get VIP seating and the tickets are $13 each. Thank you to Melissa and Christine for helping April. Power flows from the new V-6 to the pavement through one of two new transmission choices: an all-new 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions offer big gains in fuel economy. The automatic transmission delivers 19 mpg city/30 highway and the manual 18 mpg city/29 highway. The new V-6 model also offers a variety of handling and driving dynamics improvements. Enthusiasts can take it a step up by opting for a new Performance Package that includes a 3.31 gears, firmer GT suspension, 19-inch wheels with summer tires, strut tower brace and recalibrated electronic stability control with sport mode. We are planning a display at the Detroit AutoRama which would be open to any cars in the club. Mike Rey needs your application by the January general meeting. You will need 3 pictures: engine, interior, and exterior. The check must be in by the January meeting. Mike will send them all together. You can send the check to Mike via the MOCEM P.O. box or bring it to the January meeting. The committee for AutoRama will decide which cars will display. The dates are February 26-28 at Cobo. Move-in is on Wednesday and Thursday of that week. Ford has truly raised the bar on performance with the 2011 Mustang and regained the muscle car crown. Giddy up!
