SEPTEMBER 2006 Music City Mustang Club, Inc. Wes Duenkel, Newsletter Editor 702 Crief Drive Goodlettsville, TN 37072 SKID MARKS NEXT CLUB MEETING Message from the President The summer car show season here in middle Tennessee is coming to a close as October becomes the next page on our calendars. The Music City Mustang club's annual All Ford Show at Cool Springs Mall drew nearly 100 Ford vehicles. Despite the still too-high gas prices, many vintage (and new) Ford vehicles graced the parking lot after a beautiful drive through (or to) middle Tennessee. Many of our experienced members who have helped staff the show in the past were absent this year leaving a large number of rookies in charge. I don't think anybody noticed. Our long standing tradition of Thursday, September 21, 7:00pm Club meetings are held at the Piccadilly Cafeteria (615-367-4640), 874 Murfreesboro Road, Nashville, on the third Thursday of the month (except December). being great hosts continues. The Music City Mustang club has been invited by the local SVTOA to join them on a Natchez Trace cruise on October 28th. We will be leaving from the head end of the Trace next to the Loveless Café around 7 AM that morning. The Tennessee Cougar has also been invited to join. With all the varied colors on the new and vintage Ford products traveling the Natchez Trace combined with the fall foliage, That Saturday will definitely be a Kodak Moment. This summer has been a great summer as president of the Music City Mustang Club, enjoying our gettogethers, as well as others I have attended myself. I'm so happy I could just..... Skid! We pulled over to the side of the highway. Barry and Sheila turned around to come back. Then Keith drove by, recognized Billy and pulled over. He had tools! The first thought was that the problem was the coil. Billy had a new one—at home! Barry graciously let Billy and Keith take the coil from his trailored concours „67 fastback, but this was not the problem. So Barry, Shelia, and Kay drove back 9 miles to Athens to find an Advance Auto Parts store. Luckily there was one, but they didn‟t have the part. Kay decided to just take a wrecker back to haul the car home. In the mean time, Ray and Ruth Helwig drove by Billy and Keith and stopped. Ray said “Don‟t bring a wrecker. I‟ll take my convertible Mustang off of my trailer and we will push and pull Billy‟s car onto the trailer.” That was a job! Keith stayed the entire time (which was about four hours) until we were all on our way home again...and the story is not over yet. Ray and Ruth live in Clarksville, and Barry and Sheila live in Hartsville. They all drove caravan to Billy‟s house to help unload Billy‟s fastback from the trailer. They they drove home to their house which was some past midnight. THANK YOU Barry, Sheila, Keith, Ray, and Ruth! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! The towing bill would‟ve been $250. The problem with the fastback ended up being the distributor. Thank you dear friends! —Billy and Kay Beasley WEBMASTER Tracy Reynolds .... 615-643-6159 Page 2 This article is a tribute from Billy and Kay Beasley to Barry and Sheila Morrison, Keith Stem, and Ray and Ruth Helwig...Mustangers who went over and beyond to help a fellow Mustanger. I spent 3 days in the Motor City with the ROEA (Roush owners and Enthusiast‟s Association) going to events, hanging out at the track, and cruising Woodward Ave., generally having a slam bang time of it. I had driven from Nashville to Detroit with a stop over in Cincinnati (Wednesday) to sleep...you‟re thinking, sleep? Who needs sleep?...unfortunately I did...don‟t like driving at night anymore. Well, cell phones are a wonderful thing...helps you keep in touch with folks you‟re suppose to meet up with at an O‟Charley‟s somewhere on I-94...or was it I-96 (Thursday). Well, I found the restaurant...it was the one with all the Roush Mustang‟s taking up half the parking lot. This is where the fun started...after a brief lunch we caravanned...I like to call it: follow the leader...if you can keep up, to the airport where we were all given a ”tour” of the Roush aircraft hangar...WWII vintage P-51 Mustangs are...cool...and a surprise meet and greet with Jack Roush. He talked with us and autographed cars for everyone. After all this we headed to the Roush Round-Up hotel to unwind and get ready for the show and shine at the Roush Museum later that afternoon. I did say that this weekend was packed with stuff to do...didn‟t I? Well we played “follow the leader” to the Roush Museum, I got set up for the show and shine, got my cleaning gear out of the trunk and my folding chair...dusted off the car...cleaned the wheels...looked it over and went in to the “museum”, large garage is more like it...man the cars this guy has...holy moly. Cobras, Mustangs, GT-40s...Pintos. All kinds of cars. I picked up a couple of T-shirts, strolled around the grounds. Looked at some cool cars...took loads of pictures and just hung out having a good time. octane gas and burning rubber, the whine of superchargers...what a rush! I did some parade laps in car...but the treat was doing some hot laps in the co-pilot seat taking some corners waaay to fast, and filling my need for speed. I pulled flag stand duty most of the day as my way of contributing to the fun...got some good photos of the action in the process. Saturday dawns...a little drizzly and wet, by now you know the drill...its “follow the leader” time again. This time to the Roush Factory for a tour of the facility...if you‟ve seen the program RIDES on TLC, you‟ll know this part...unfortunately I forgot to bring a duffle bag large enough for the miscellaneous parts I would‟ve liked to have brought home. After the tour it was time to head to Woodward Ave...and Mustang Alley...still drizzly too...it was until about 1PM...we all parked together in the police precinct parking lot. Every mustang in Mustang Alley was entered in a show and shine...and there were LOTS of them...from the classic years...to the survival years (Mustang IIs) a whole parking lot full, the early Fox body cars... and the SN-95 body style...Saleens, Shelbys (real and clones), SVOs, California Specials...the yellow mustang registry was out as a herd too. Ford had the Shelby GT500 on display as well as the Mustang GT with the GT/CS package. After lunch, the sun broke through the clouds and we actually got out an cruised Woodward Ave as a group in our ponies. Checking out the crowds that formed along the route that were checking us out...too cool. All to soon it was over, the next morning I packed up and headed back home to Nashville, my Dream Cruise fully documented on my digital camera. The Legend THANK YOU MCMC by Stan Bryant Many thanks to the members of M.C.M.C.for the continued hospitality they have shown me on my recent trip to Nashville. I have been a member of the club since 1994 after meeting Jim Chism in Charlotte N.C. at the Mustang 30th Anniversary show. In that time I have only attended 3 meetings, a Cool Springs Show and also the Grand National the club hosted for the M.C.A. I have made many friends in the club and really enjoyed the trip to Savannah G.A. with a gteat group of members. The friendship and enjoyment I experienced will never be forgotten. The Roush Roundup in Detroit, the Woodward Dream Cruiseand the Michigan 400 were also unforgettable and I sincerly thank Jim and Lisa Chism for their friendship and hospitality. Hope to catch up with you all again in the not too distant future but in the meantime enjoy your Mustangs and the wonderful spirit of your fellow members. SEPTEMBER 2006 MCA 30th ANNIVERSARY STAMPEDE AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK Photos by Wes Duenkel (See all the pictures in color at www.wesduenkel.com) The next morning (Friday)...way to bright and early, you guessed it...more “follow the leader”. This time to Waterford Hill Raceway for an open track event. This was a tour de force Roush event...Roush, SVT Cobras, Mustang GTs...even a stray Cobra kit car and a Subaru rice rocket. The track went hot at 10AM and ran until about 4PM...the smell of high Page 8 SEPTEMBER 2006 SEPTEMBER 2006 Page 5 SEPTEMBER 2006 The Legend SHELBY TEST DRIVE SEPTEMBER 2006 they have learned from the stories about the ‟66 Shelby‟s. She handed me the keys and I was off. Story and Photos by Jeff Billigs Like many of you in the club, I occasionally have to travel on business. Most recently I‟ve been traveling down to Vero Beach, FL, flying into Orlando and then driving the 1 ½ hours down to Vero. When I learned that Orlando had received their allotment of Shelby GT-H‟s, I was eager to rent one. Now I‟m guessing that most of you have already read the specs on the GT-H along with the testdrive reports. So I won‟t repeat that information here. What I will tell you about is the experience of renting and driving one of these machines. As the wheels touched down on my Southwest flight into Orlando, I couldn‟t wait to check out the GT-H I had reserved two weeks earlier. Most of the rental companies in Orlando are right at the airport, however, Hertz is off-site. After the fiveminute ride to the Hertz lot, I could see two rows of GT-H‟s lined up. I quickly counted 20 cars. As the bus pulled into the drop-off area, I counted 8 more lined up right in front of the office. I jumped off the bus and found my name on the Gold Member board. But instead of a space number for my car, it contained ***. I stopped into the office, gave them my name, and they responded with, “Oh, you‟ve rented one of Mr. Shelby‟s cars”. My cheeks were starting to hurt from the big ol‟ grin on my face. They asked me to wait one minute and then Denise, the Assistant Manager, came around the counter to walk me out to the Shelby. Right out the side door were two black and gold Shelby‟s. My name was on one and another lucky sole had reserved the other. Denise then proceeded to let me know that we were going to walk around the car and identify all the unique parts that make this Mustang a Shelby. She pulled out a checklist that contained all the Shelby components and started checking them off as we walked around the car. She used terms like, “and here is the special sway bar Mr. Shelby added”. Denise thought the car looked a little dirty so she called someone to come out and wipe it down. Within a few moments another Hertz employee was out with a California Duster wiping down the car. By this time I was dying to get behind the wheel. We completed the checklist, she had me sign it, and then Denise said, “make sure all these parts remain on the car”. I guessed Page 6 The Legend As you pull over the “do not back up” speed bumps, you instantly notice that this car has been lowered. It scraped all along the underside of the car. I pulled out into traffic and waited until I was out of earshot to do my first of many full throttle blasts. Manually shifting the 5-speed automatic, I quickly found out that the rev limiter kicks in at 6500 rpm. I also quickly found out that you can‟t disengage the traction control. So while smoky burnouts aren‟t possible, the car does launch very well. Another personal observation is the sound. Shelby nailed this one. It sounds great. Quiet at idle and on the expressway, but just about perfect when under acceleration. Finally, my last observation is the looks you get while driving the car. I was asked questions in parking lots, given the thumbs up while driving, and noticed people walking over to the car after I parked it. Speaking of parking, be careful around the parking bumpers and curbs. The front airdam will hit them if you pull up too far. So what did this little adventure into “Shelby-dom” cost? In Orlando the best rate I could find was $123 a day with 75 free miles each day. It‟s 39 cents for each additional mile. I was told that on slow weekdays they have been offering unlimited free miles. After I returned to Nashville I stopped by the Hertz counter in the airport to find out about the availability here. They had just received the Shelby and their best rate was $149 a day with unlimited mileage. Personally, I thought the three days I had the car was well worth the price of admission.
