March 2016 - Temple B`nai Israel
THE MARCH 2016 / VOLUME 16 ISSUE 2 Temple Chronicle C O N G R E G AT I O N FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY RABBI BARRY BLOCK Dear Friends: Jews don’t usually advertise our faith. Particularly not in the newspaper. This month, though, our congregation will be taking out advertisements in the Democrat-Gazette and the Arkansas Times, to invite participation in a program called, “A Taste of Judaism,” which I plan to teach at the Temple on Thursday evenings, March 31 and April 7 and 14, 7:30-9:00 pm. “A Taste of Judaism” is an offering of our Union of Reform Judaism. I taught the program previously in San Antonio. “A Taste of Judaism” invites people in our community, individuals of any faith or none, to come to our Temple and to gain an introductory insight into our tradition. Each of the three sessions focuses on one of the central pillars of Judaism, God, Torah, and Israel. (“Torah” for this purpose refers more to Jewish teaching and practice than to Scripture itself. “Israel” in this case refers more to Jewish peoplehood than to the Jewish State.) The course is very introductory, so it isn’t primarily designed for Temple members. However, the program is particularly meaningful for people who aren’t Jewish but who have Jewish family members, including members of our congregation. Even some of our members may welcome the refresher! Last summer, Ellyn Polsky submitted an application for a URJ grant, which covers two-thirds of the cost of the advertising, the balance of which will be made possible by a grant from my rabbinic discretionary fund. There is no charge for participation, but advanced registration is required. If you are interested, or if you know somebody who would be, please contact Ellyn, 225-9700 or [email protected]. Since virtually all are church groups, nonChristians and those who are unchurched are not often among our visitors. The large majority are white and are socio-economically similar to our own membership, simply because that’s who asks to come. Torah Study, led by Rabbi Block, at 9:30 am Shabbat Services, led by Rabbi Block, at 11:00 am “A Taste of Judaism” attracts a diverse group of individuals from throughout our community to learn about Judaism, without relying on a church or other group to take the initiative. In addition, “A Taste of Judaism” can attract folks who are Jewish – or who have a Jewish parent, grandparent, or other ancestor – but who never were offered a formal Jewish education. Welcoming the entire community into the Temple has always been important to Reform Judaism and this historic congregation. Even for those who don’t sign up and participate, the “Taste of Judaism” advertisements send a powerful message that all are welcome at Congregation B’nai Israel. Now there’s an answer! TASTE OF JUDAISM: Are You Curious? will be held in our congregation this spring. The class is being taught by Rabbi Block and is sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism. This FREE, three session Outreach program is open to the unaffiliated Jews and non-Jews- all are welcome. Please take advantage of this opportunity to reach out to your extended family members, future in-laws, neighbors, and friends and offer them a “taste” of what makes Judaism so special right here in our own community. If you know anyone that you think may benefit from A TASTE OF JUDAISM please have them register online at http://www.reformjudaism.org/taste-judaism%C2%AE Book discussion and signing with Dr. Michael Cooper Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m. Be here, and bring your book club too. Welcome Dr. Cooper, winner of the 2011 Indie Publishing Contest Grand Prize for his book FOXES IN THE VINEYARD to our congregation for a book discussion and signing. Dr. Cooper, a pediatric cardiologist in Northern California, has volunteered 20 times for medical missions, to serve Palestinian children who lack access to medical care. He also serves on his synagogue’s Israel Engagement committee. He began writing historical fiction to convey a message of coexistence and hope for reconciliation and peace in Israel. THE RABBI’S KNIGHT is his second novel. THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE VOLUME 16 ISSUE 2 MARCH 2016 PAGE 9 Miriam’s Seder Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 6:00pm, in the Teen Lounge Facilitated by the CBI Sisterhood Miriam’s Seder follows a special Haggadah called “The Journey Continues”. It is deeply committed to women’s full integration in every aspect of Jewish life and practice. The Haggadah also enriches and renews Judaism by exposing the voices and experiences of women of the past, including the women who are part of the Exodus story–the acts of civil disobedience of the midwives Puah and Shifra, of Miriam at the shore of the Sea of Reeds, and Miriam’s Well. By recognizing them, we reclaim the women’s participation in Jewish history. Each year there is a new associated theme. Everyone is invited. The cost is $18 per person and reservations are required. RSVP to the Temple office. The “Torah on Tap” program is now called “J-Rock”. The first “J-Rock” Event will take place on March 26 at the Lost Forty Brewing and Taproom. If you are interested in meeting new and interesting people, and if you are a Millennial (give or take a few years) you are invited to the party! The “Twenties and Thirties” young adult group known as “Torah on Tap” is alive and well, and moving on in name and structure. The new name is “J-Rock” and they are planning to rock the Jewish singles and young family scene in Little Rock. Last year we entered into a partnership with the Jewish Federation of Arkansas to consolidate our programming efforts and combine contact lists for this target group, which has been meeting under the Lifelong Learning umbrella for six years. With support from Marianne Tettlebaum and several “senior” advisors, participants have begun to plan the next events, which include a variety of social, study, and social action programs. Schmoozerama! Saturday, March 5, 2016 – Gentleman’s Agreement Discussion facilitated by Carmen Arick. Havdallah led by ISJL Education Fellow, Bethany Berger. Potluck Dinner and a Movie, Discussion, and Havdalah, too! “…fascinating as a historical novel, thrilling in the twists and turns of the story, and delightful in the manner in which important aspects and concepts of Kabbalah are presented to a general readership.” —Ronit Meroz, Ph.D., Department of Hebrew Culture Studies— Division of Kabbalah and Hasidism, Tel Aviv University Join us in the cozy Teen Lounge from 6:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. Bring a dish that serves 8. Enjoy the company and the show! Reservations are requested for planning purposes. RSVP thru the Temple office. (Please enter through the back door closest to the teen lounge.) “…a wonderful, exciting, and most entertaining story.” —Rabbi David Zisenwine, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Education, Tel Aviv University. Chair of the Israel Jewish Educational Research Association Gentleman’s Agreement: A reporter pretends to be Jewish in order to cover a story on anti-Semitism, and personally discovers the true depths of bigotry and hatred. The 1947 film was directed by Elia Kazan and stars Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire. Both books are available for purchase in the office. Half of the proceeds will be generously donated back to the Lifelong Learning program. Dr. Cooper will donate the other half of the book sale proceeds to his late sister Adrienne Cooper’s legacy fund, the “Adrienne Cooper Dreaming in Yiddish Fund”, which continues her efforts of reviving the Yiddish language and culture. He will give a copy of her first solo CD, Dreaming in Yiddish, with every book purchased. An immigrant with no formal education, Judge Trieber went on to become the first Jewish person to serve as a federal judge as well as a brilliant jurist with a vision that was way ahead of his time. The opinions he wrote while on the bench remain a crucial part of our understanding of the Constitution today. Join Judge Evans to discuss Judge Trieber’s continued importance to all people. TEAM CHALLAH WANTS YOU! JEWISH FOOD FESTIVAL • APRIL 10, 2016 WE’RE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD CHALLAH BAKERS! Truth be told, we can use as few or as many as you’d like to bake, so tie on that apron and join our merry band. Not a challah baker yet? We will gladly teach you, so grab a couple of friends and let’s get going! Last year, with only a few bakers, we sold over 200 loaves of challah before 1:30. Obviously, we need more bakers which is where you come in. You may bake in your home or join a baking session at the Temple, and you may use either your own recipe or we will share ours with you. Best thing about baking challah? The aroma. It’s seriously intoxicating. So, please challah at either of your Challah Booth Co-Chairs, Trudy Jacobson at [email protected] 501.690.7491 or Meg Marion at [email protected] 501.951.3345 to get this challah party started.
