Letter to the Parents
Dear Bethel Parents,
Have you ever lost something? I am sure we all have. What about
something important? What were the emotions you felt when you lost
it? Where you anxious, fearful, stressed, frustrated, or angry?
Now think about a time that you lost something but you didn’t know
how long it had been missing. Where do you begin to search since you
cannot remember when you lost it?
The answer is simple. Whether you have lost something recently or
have lost something a long time ago, you do the same thing. You go
back to the place that you last had it and you start there.
As a Christian, the celebration of Easter is very important. Easter is a
time for us to celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of our
Saviour, Jesus Christ. However, for many reasons, we LOSE the real
meaning of Easter.
Somehow mixed in are messages about soft cute
bunnies, little yellow chicks, colorful plastic eggs, fancy clothes,
plastic green grass, decorated hard-boiled eggs, and lots and lots of
candy. Although these things are fun, the real meaning of Easter gets
LOST.
Where can I find the real meaning of Easter? As a family, how do we
search for this lost treasure?
Again, the answer is simple. You go back to where you lost it. You go
back to your foundation and the Word of God.
Take your family on an adventure. Investigate the last days of Jesus
as you celebrate Easter week together. This booklet is an interactive
devotional guide to help your family chronologically study the last days
of Jesus’ life on Earth.
Get out your magnifying glass and follow the clues to the greatest
treasure ever to be discovered.

How to use this devotionAL
Every great investigator needs tools to INVESTIGATE something lost. Each page has the
following icons to help you in your search! Parents, be sure to read ahead. It will require a
small amount of prep time but nothing to stress over. You can do it!

Have a member of the family read aloud the scripture passage that
goes with the title for the HEAR IT! portion. It’s not just for mom
or dad to do. This is a great job even for the newest of readers.
Remember to give praise and encouragement as he or she
demonstrates this new skill! *Bible passages referenced are from the
English Standard Version (ESV).
HEAR IT!
Each devotion has a coloring page that expresses what is going on in
the passage and should be colored by the listeners during the
reading time for those to truly SEE IT!. Print off copies BEFORE
the devotional time so that all can participate. Older siblings may
want to just help in this process. Allow for creativity so have extra
blank paper on hand.
This is an opportunity for your family to FEEL IT! together. This
portion of the devotion is where you act out the story (Option One)
and/or create something to symbolize it (Option Two).
Please Note: If your resources are limited or your time to
prepare is stretched, please feel free to view this as
OPTIONAL.

The Bible tells us in James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not
hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” The TAKE IT! part is where
every family member must apply action to what they have learned.
Take time as you answer the questions to put the Word in action.

Philippians 4:6 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in
everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your
requests to God.” We have created a prayer section for you to
conclude your devotional time together to PRAY IT! but please feel
the freedom to pray whatever is on your hearts.

The Triumphal Entry
Matthew 21:1-11
HEAR IT!
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the
Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into
the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied,
and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says
anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send
them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet,
saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,[a] the foal of a beast of
burden.’” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They
brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat
on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others
cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the
crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting,
“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the
whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said,
“This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

OPTION One:
Place a chair in the center of the room. Pretend Jesus is sitting on it.
Have family members take off their outer garments (jackets, sweatshirts,
sweaters, etc.) and lay them in front of the chair. Bring in a few small
branches or twigs from outside to use in your celebration. Just remind
your small ones to be careful as they wave their branches. Practice
shouting together as you dance around Jesus saying, “Hosanna!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” Take a
moment to talk about how you would have felt seeing Jesus on that day.
OPTION TWO:
Make PALM BRANCH COOKIES: You will need (1) roll of Cookie
Dough, a Leaf Cookie Cutter, and Green Sprinkles. Roll out the dough, use
the cookie cutter to make leaves, bake, cool, and shake sprinkles on top.
Create a family parade to march up to get your snack while shouting for
Jesus!

1. In this passage, the disciples were given clear directions by
Jesus to follow. Share about a time when Jesus asked you
to obey Him. How did you respond? Did you obey or
disobey?
HEAR IT!
2. Are there areas in your life where you have become QUIET
about Jesus? Would you be willing to look silly to worship
Him? Explain.
PRAY
IT!
Speak to us, Lord, like you did with the disciples. You were
clear in giving your instructions and they obeyed you. Help
us to obey you even to the detail. Let us honor you like a KIng
and celebrate you for all that you are. Jesus, let us be silly in
our worship and not worry about what others think. We love
you Jesus. You are our King!

Mark 11:15-18
HEAR IT!
And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began
to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and
he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of
those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry
anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying
to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of
prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of
robbers.” And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were
seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the
crowd was astonished at his teaching.

OPTION One:

It is time for show and tell! Have each person bring a special item to
share with the family (parents included). It may be an item like a
blanket, stuffed animal, photo album, sports equipment, award, and so
forth. Ask everyone to talk about their special thing and why it is so
valuable to them. Ask each person how they would feel if someone were
to mess it up (like color on it, squish it, run over it with the car, etc). They
probably would be very angry. In today’s devotion, Jesus was upset that
people were messing with what was special to Him. His house and His
people are very valuable to Him and should be to us too.
OPTION TWO:
Make a PRAYER BOX FOR THE NATIONS: Take an empty shoebox
and cover it with white construction paper. Either draw or print flags of
nations to paste on the outside of the box. Take strips of paper and have
each person write down a “prayer” for a nation and place it inside the
box. Place your prayer box on your kitchen table this week. Read the
prayers at dinner time together. Feel free to add more prayer strips
inside of your box as God lays the prayers on your hearts.

things that upset God? Let’s talk about it.

2. What is our family’s national heritage? What makes us
unique?
3. How can we as a family care more for the nations? What
are some practical things we can do to impact the nations?

Open our eyes Lord to see like you do. Help us to care about the
things that matter to you. Let us watch over your house and
your people. Remind us to always pray for the nations. Help
us to remember that You love the whole world and you desire for
everyone to know you!

Jesus Anointed in Bethany
MaRK 14:3-9
HEAR IT!
And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he
was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of
ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and
poured it over his head. There were some who said to themselves
indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this
ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii
and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. But Jesus said, “Leave
her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing
to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you
want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have
me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body
beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel
is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in
memory of her.”

OPTION One:
Place a blanket in the center of the room. Have each family member
gather and place their ‘special things’ in the center of the blanket (i.e.
stuffed animals, blankets, photos, jewelry, etc.). Talk about the lady in
the bible story. Talk about how hard it must have been for her to give up
her ‘special thing’- the alabaster jar. Was Jesus worth it to her?
Would it be difficult for us to do the same thing today with these items
on the blanket? Is Jesus worth it?
FOR EXTRA EMPHASIS: Have the family close their eyes and listen
together to CeCe Winans song, “Alabaster Box”.
OPTION TWO:
Make an Alabaster Bag: You will need a scrap of fabric, a ribbon, a
cotton ball, and some perfume/cologne. Spread out fabric, spray
perfume/cologne on cotton ball, pull the corners together of the fabric,
and tie with the ribbon. Have the children smell their Alabaster Bag.
Place under a pillow, in a sock drawer, gym bag,etc... anywhere to remind
us of Jesus.

that was great. What can you for Him?

weak, you want us to come to you! When we come, you want us
to give you our whole heart. Help us Jesus not to hold anything
back from you. You are so worth it!

The Plot Against Jesus
LUKE 22:3-6
HEAR IT!
Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the
number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief
priests and officers how he might betray him to them. And they were
glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an
opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

OPTION One:
Tell the kids to meet you by the closet in a few minutes but they need to
first go and put on a disguise. Outside of the closet, explain to the
children that they are acting out the part of Judas and are to be very
secretive. Once in the closet pass around a heavy bag of coins. Talk
about the story they just read. Why did Judas need to be secretive?
Was the money worth it to give up Jesus to the chief priests and officers
of the temple guard?
OPTION TWO:
Do a KISS TEST: You will need a handful of Hershey Kisses and a
sample of unsweetened chocolate. Taste a Hershey’s Kiss. Describe how it
looks, smells, and tastes. NOW, taste a piece of unsweetened chocolate.
Slowly describe how it looks, smells, and tastes. Compare the two! Read
Luke 22:47-48 on how Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss. How was that
kiss like the unsweetened chocolate?

1. Have you ever told a lie or been untruthful? How does it
feel when you are not honest? Compare what it feels like
when you tell the truth.

2. Do you think Judas was happy with the money he got? Do
you think anything is worth giving up Jesus for?

There is nothing in this world that we value more than you
Jesus. No money! No toys! No things! No, Nothing! Guard
our hearts from believing the lie that something is worth more
than you. You are awesome! You rock!

Washing of the feet
John 13:1-17
HEAR IT!
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his
hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having
loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the
end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart
of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the
Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come
from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside
his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his
waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the
disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped
around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you
wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not
understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to
him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not
wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him,
“Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said
to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for
his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every
one of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he
said, “Not all of you are clean.”
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and
resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have
done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so
I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you
also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an
example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly,
truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a
messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these
things, blessed are you if you do them.

OPTION One:HEAR IT!
It is time to get dirty! Take off your shoes and walk outside in the dirt.
Imagine what it was like to walk on the roads during Jesus‘ time. Have
everyone come inside and sit on a chair. Mom or dad will need to pretend
to be Jesus and wash everyone’s feet. You will need a towel for drying, a
washcloth for washing, and a bowl with water and soap for cleaning.
What was it like for the disciples to have their feet washed by their
teacher? How do you think it made them feel? How did it make you
feel? Take turns pretending to be Jesus and wash each others‘ feet.
OPTION TWO:
Make a Family Foot Fan: You will need colorful construction paper, a
marker, scissors, hole puncher, and a piece of yarn. Trace each family
member’s foot/feet on construction paper and cut each out. Stack the
feet together and hole punch the heel. Thread the yard through the hole
and then fan the feet outward. Talk about ways your family can work
together to do something kind for someone else. Write each idea on the
foot represented in your fan. Here are some examples: flowers for
someone sick, a yard clean-up day for a neighbor, a card or drawing for
the postal worker, etc.

1. Describe how a president, king, and/or famous person is
treated? Do you think they do ‘ordinary’ activities? Would
you be surprised if they picked up your trash on trash day?
What if they came to your house to make you breakfast?
Would you be surprised? Let’s talk about it.
2. If Jesus is considered the King of Kings and He took time
to do something like wash His friend’s feet, what are ways
we can take care of those around us? What things can we
do for our friends and neighbors?

Thank you for loving us Lord and showing us how to truly
serve! Teach us to love and care about people the way you care
for them. Give us creative ways to show your love to those
around us.
FRIDAY
The death of Jesus
Note to Parents: The story of the Crucifixion can be challenging to share with our
children because of the depth of its’ cruelty. However, it’s very important to share with
them because it’s at the core of our faith. If the story makes the children sad, it’s okay,
it’s sad for all of us. Just remind the children that Jesus did all this because of His great
love for us. The best part of the crucifixion is that it’s just the beginning and the best part
is to come!

Mark 15:33-37
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the
whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried
with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My
God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the
bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone
ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it
to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to
take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.

OPTION One:
FEEL
IT!
Take time to imagine and describe a time when each family member was
really sick. Place two empty drinking glasses in front of each person.
Pour a glass of cold water for everyone, drink it, and describe how that
water would taste on that imagined sick day. Now pour a small amount of
vinegar in the other glass. Have each person smell it and drink it (if they
will). Describe how it would have felt to drink the vinegar when not
feeling well. How do you think Jesus felt when He was given the wine
vinegar to drink when He was dying?
OPTION TWO:
Make a CROWN OF THORNS WREATH: You will need a small
grapevine wreath, toothpicks, and a red ribbon. Place the grapevine
wreath on the table and slide in the toothpicks throughout the wreath.
Tie it up with ribbon to hang on a door to represent Jesus’ death for us.
As you are working on the craft together, talk about crowns most kings
wear. How is this one different? How would this crown with needles
sticking out feel like to wear? Why did they give Jesus this kind of
crown?

1. Imagine you had a chance to share the story of Jesus’
death with someone who has never heard about it. What
was it like for Jesus on that day? How did people treat
him?
HEAR IT!
2. Read John 3:16 and talk about what God’s love means to
you. Take a moment to thank Jesus for dying on the cross
for you and the world.
PRAY

Wow! You died for us. You gave up your life for us! Even for
people that were mean to you- you died for them too. Let us not
forget what you did that day. Thank you. Thank you. Thank
you, Jesus!!!

(Silence)
Although the scriptures are quiet on this day, the SILENCE seems
to speak a thousand words. The moments leading up to Jesus’ death
do require reflection so take this day as a family to look back and
take in all that happened in Jesus’ life in His last week.

*Have the children fill in the empty face on their coloring page to best
reflect how Jesus’ friends must have felt on that ‘silent’ day.
OPTION One:
FEEL
IT!
It is time for us to imagine! What do you think the people acted like
after Jesus had died? Now act out the part of: Jesus‘ friends, His
family, the people who were mean to Jesus, and others. How would you
have responded to his death on that day?
OPTION TWO:
Make a Garden Tomb:
(PART ONE) You will need a pie plate, a roll of toilet paper, small rocks
and dirt, a large rock, a white piece of tissue, marker, a popsicle stick, and
some toy army men. Start by placing the toilet paper roll on its side in
the middle of the pie plate (You will see through the middle). Fill the
plate with small rocks and dirt. This represents the tomb. Take the
popsicle stick and draw a face for Jesus on one end. Wrap Him with the
piece of tissue to represent his burial clothes and place Him inside the
toilet paper (t.p.) roll. Cover the opening of the tomb (t.p.) with a large
rock and place soldiers to the side to guard the tomb.
(PART TWO) The next morning, parents need to remember to make some
tomb changes before the children see it. Place the large rock beside the
tomb (t.p,), place the soldiers on their sides, and remove Jesus. Fold the
tissue and place it back inside the tomb (pot). Ask the children what
happened to the tomb? What looks different? Where did Jesus go?
FOR EXTRA EMPHASIS: Take the Garden Tomb one step further by
placing it in a central location and end the classic hymn, “Where You
There”. Wrap Jesus with tissue as you sing the verses but omit the last
verse. Then blow out the candle when you cover the tomb and close the
closet door with the soldiers guarding it. The next day, the children will
find the closet door open, the soldiers on their sides, the rock removed,
and just the garments left behind. Then sing the hymn again emphasizing
the final verse... “Were you there when God raised Him from the tomb?”

1. How do you feel today? Are you sad? Share your feelings
with the family.
HEAR IT!
2. Read John 3:16 again. What does it mean to you that God
GAVE His Son for you?
It must have been very sad Lord for all the people that saw you
die. It makes us sad too. Help us as we share our feelings that
we would tell you how we really feel. We know you are here with
us and you understand. And although we feel sad today, we
know you have a plan because you always do. It’s coming and
we know it. Jesus, we love you.

Jesus Has Risen
LUKE 24:1-12
HEAR IT!
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the
tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone
rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find
the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this,
behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they
were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said
to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not
here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in
Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of
sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they
remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all
these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary
Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other
women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these
words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe
them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he
saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at
what had happened.

OPTION One:
Create a fort using blankets and chairs. Have a family member pretend to
be Jesus and lay inside the fort. Peek inside the blankets to reveal Jesus
inside the tomb. Close the blanket and go into the kitchen to get spices
to prepare Jesus‘ body for burial. When you return, make sure that
“Jesus” disappeared out of the fort and is out of sight. Pull open the
blanket to reveal that the tomb is empty. Now run around the house
shouting that Jesus has risen! Repeat and let others take turns
pretending to be Jesus.
OPTION TWO:
Make Resurrection
Cookies:

IT!
You will need a can of crescent rolls,
butter, cinnamon, and a few large marshmallows. Have the children help
you unwrap the crescent rolls, place the marshmallow inside, roll in melted
butter, and sprinkle with a cinnamon. Bake at 375 until the roll is
browned and then set out to cool. While you are preparing the cookies,
baking them, and waiting for them to cool, explain how this recipe is like
the tomb of Jesus. When it is time to eat the cookies, everyone will
wonder where did the marshmallow (Jesus) go?

1. In this story, the women went and told the disciples what
they had seen and experienced at the tomb. Can you think
of someone right now that also needs to hear that Jesus
rose from the dead? What will you say to him/her?
2. This passage in the NIV said that the disciples “...did not
believe the women, because their words seemed to them
like nonsense.” Even though the story of Jesus may seem
unbelievable to others at times, will that stop you from
sharing it?
3. Read John 3:16 one more time. What does it mean to have
Eternal Life? You can know His SALVATION! *Knowing in
our mind that our parents will give us a birthday gift is not
enough. What do we need to do? We need to receive the
gift and open it so it becomes ours. Knowing that Jesus
died on the cross for us is also not enough. We need to

Have you received Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life? If

PRAYER OF SALVATION:
Dear Jesus, forgive me for I have sinned against you. I know that because of
my sins, I am separated from you. I make a decision now to turn away from
my sins and follow you all the days of my life. Thank you for dying on the
cross for me. I now receive you into my life as my Lord, my Master, my
Savior, and forgiver of all my sins. I now receive the gift of eternal life. Help
me to live for you and please you from this day on. In Jesus‘ name... Amen.
