Community Celebrates Conservation at 5th Annual Breakfast
Bell Farm in Dungeness - Conserved in 2003
Lindsey Aspelund Photography
On March 21st, North Olympic Land Trust hosted its
5th Annual Conservation Breakfast. The event was an
opportunity for the community to come together and
celebrate conservation of the lands that make the
North Olympic Peninsula a wonderful place to live
and visit.
The program included the presentation of the first
annual Out Standing in the Field Award to Ron Allen
and the Natural Resources staff at the Jamestown
S’Klallam Tribe for their decades of leadership in
community efforts to maintain and restore the health
of the Dungeness River.
This year’s breakfast was attended by over 175
community supporters and focused on the long history
of efforts to conserve the farms, fish and forests of the
Dungeness River Watershed.
The Conservation Breakfast also serves as a
fundraiser for the Land Trust’s work across Clallam
County. This year’s event raised a record $21,000!
Land Trust Selected for National Excellence Program
The Land Trust Alliance has invited North Olympic
Land Trust to be an inaugural member of its National
Excellence Program. This program has been designed
to deliver tailored organizational development
assistance over multiple years to a select group of land
trusts across the country that are poised to grow their
capacity and advance their conservation impact.
Initial funding is being provided by the Doris Duke
Charitable Foundation.
North Olympic Land Trust was chosen for this
program due to its long commitment to
organizational excellence coupled with the
phenomenal potential for landscape-scale land
conservation.
To kick off its participation, later this year the
Alliance will fund a broad organizational assessment
of North Olympic Land Trust. Based on the results
of this assessment, the two groups will work together
to fund and build the Land Trust’s capacity to have
an even deeper impact in the community.

Land Trust Awarded Over $90,000
in Conservation Planning Grants
North Olympic Land Trust has been awarded two planning grants
from the Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration program. Over the
coming year, the Land Trust will use these grants to support a
collaborative effort with partner groups to prioritize and develop long
-term strategies for conservation and restoration projects along the
bluffs to the west of Dungeness Spit and along the Elwha River
between its mouth and the Olympic National Park boundary.
The overall goal of the Dungeness portion of the grant is to have a
prioritization of projects for land purchase or conservation easements
to ensure the uninterrupted long-term marine sediment supply that
creates and maintains complex shoreline features and habitat needed
by salmon including the Dungeness Bay Estuary Ecosystem.
The Elwha portion of the grant will analyze and prioritizes lands in
the Elwha River, Little River and Indian Creek watersheds that are
most important to restore and maintain critical salmon habitat.
In coming years, the results of this planning work will both ensure
that quality conservation projects are developed and will increase the
likelihood that the Land Trust and other local groups can acquire the
outside funding necessary to accomplish the further conservation of
these important resources.
