The photo eye is a secondary safety device. It produces a beam between the 2 units. When the beam is
broken it will keep the gate from closing. It requires wires to be connected to both units (20 gauge) for
operation. Typically a swing gate needs two sets of photo eyes for the best area protection. 12 or 24

The USAutomatic optional seven day timer, available from DADS, can be used to open the gate at a
preset time and if the auto close feature of the gate opener is being used the gate can then close
automatically at a preset time. The timer is supplied with a 3 wire harness that easily wires to the control
board. This timer operates on 12 volts dc. There are 24 Event timer settings, each with their own (on)
and (off) settings. Also has manual and random settings. Reads in 24 hour format. Temp -4°F to 158°F.
Timer was designed for use with USAutomatic boards. NOTE: While designed for USAutomatic
operators, it will also work on 12 volt GTO’s, Apollo’s and other 12 volt dc operators that use ground to
trigger. (If the control board in question uses a ground input to activate an input it should work).

BEAM NOTES - Beams, when interrupted sense objects. Beams are frequently used in an attempt to provide additional
protection from moving gates as they will detect humans and animals where loops will not. Unfortunately, because of the
narrowness of the beam, they are not a perfect solution and can leave some areas unprotected. Slide gates due to their in-line
travel are probably easier to provide protection for. Swing gates on the other hand cover a lot of ground while “plowing”
across their path. No beam can provide 100% coverage and should be used in conjunction with other devices.

To understand Solar Cycles, picture a piggy bank with 50
pennies in it. If you put in 4 pennies
a day and take out 4 pennies a day,
your original 50 pennies will remain
constant. If you start removing more
pennies than you return and don’t
catch up soon, you will run out in a
matter of time. This is how solar
works. You are limited by the
number of cycles you can return to
the battery over a period of time. The
returning number of cycles must
meet or exceed the number of cycles used. The above chart gives
the “returning cycles” produced on a winter day with minimum
sunlight and the sun at an inefficient low angle. Spring, Fall &
Summer return rate will be more. If your use of the operator is
higher or lower on weekends, add your total cycles for the week
and divide by 7 to get an average daily requirement rate. A new,
fully charged, standard GTO Battery, available from DADS,
contains/holds 30 to 50 cycles depending on model used. In some
circumstances, using an optional larger battery system will help
store more cycles during periods of low use. These increased cycles
will then be available later if needed. The addition of accessories
will cause additional draw on the batteries. Some accessories may
require extra solar wattage or separate transformers in order to keep
the operator battery from being run down.

GTO Low Voltage Charging Circuits are designed to handle up
to 30 Watts Total Solar per system except the SL2000B which
accepts up to 20 watts.
Accessories: DADS recommends that you keep total accessory
demands to below 20-30 ma., especially when you are pushing
the envelope on wattage requirements. Some accessories are
just not solar compatible due to too much current draw.

Exit Wands (Free Exit Probe)
Economically priced exit wands, available from DADS, activate the opening cycle of the gate when a
vehicle drives by, while leaving the property, without the need for a transmitter, key pad or other control
device. Works with all brands of operators providing 8-26 volts for accessories. Better than exit loops
located just inside the gate because wands are normally installed further back (50’-100’ and will start the
gate opening sooner. Provided the driveway is long enough, longer versions (up to 250’) are available
for impatient users who want the gate to start opening quicker. Easier to install than loops. Normally
there is no need to saw cut or tear up the driveway. Probe buries along side the driveway about 6-12”
deep. Cable can be just under the roots of the grass if there is no danger of lawn gouging. Senses

The GTO Battery heater, available from DADS, is designed to maintain the batteries in the GTO control
box at a higher temperature when the system is installed in a cold climate. The heater is easy to install
and wire. Controlled by a built in thermostat that activates the heater at temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
One or two heaters can be used depending on the number of batteries installed in the control box. The
heater is designed to be used with all GTO and Mighty Mule gate operators equipped with the RB500

WANDS - Exit wands detect moving metal. Exit wands normally detect a car going past that is within about 6’ and traveling about 5 m.p.h. (idle
speed). Allowing for the width of the car, the wand covers about a 12’ wide drive. Wands do not require saw cutting the pavement as they (and the
lead cable) are usually buried along side the drive from 50-500 feet back from the gate. Speed and metal mass effects wand sensitivity. Exit wands

An Overview For LOOPS - Loops detect the metal in cars and trucks, both moving and non moving. Loops are connected to detectors and come in two (2) basic
formats, single loop and double loop. This permits various different combinations of applications. Loops can be used to open gates (free exit) and

as hold-open-loops (formerly called safety loops). Shadow loops are used on swing gates when the distance between the inner and outer loop is
excessive. Below are several sample application diagrams. When connecting loops, remember to connect them to the appropriate operator circuit

The Linear Model AK-11 Exterior Digital Keypad is a digital
keyless entry system designed for access control applications. The
keypad, available from DADS, is housed in a rugged cast aluminum
enclosure that can be mounted to a pedestal or bolted directly to a
wall. The die-cast keys have bright, easy-to-read yellow graphics.
Up to 480 entry codes, from 1 to 6 digits in length, can be
programmed. They can activate either, or both, of the relay outputs.
Relay #1 has a 5 Amp capacity. Relay #2 has a 1 Amp capacity. The relays can be
set for timed or latch-on/latch-off toggle operation per each individual entry code.
The on or off toggle state of a relay is maintained even after power interruption.
When power is restored to the keypad, each relay will assume the state it was in

The D4130 Thermostatic Battery Warmer Controller is a temperature controlled
electrical thermostat outlet. Designed to automatically turn on and off electrical
devices when the ambient temperature drops or raises in accordance with a preset
temperature setting, the Controller is the ideal device to control the operation of
the heater pad(s). The Controller plugs into an outdoor 15 amp, 120 volt AC electrical
outlet and has two 120 volt receptacles. The controller must be at the same ambient
temperature as the battery and protected from the weather. The maximum electrical
