This year’s event drew thousands to Arlington on Saturday, May 25. Thank you for bringing your family and friends! Save the date: Saturday, May 24, 2014. Ward 5 Update A Place to Play Summer school vacation is almost here and soon, thousands of our children will be enthusiastically looking for fun things to do with their time off from school. The cost for the camp is $92 per week for residents and $138 per week for non-residents. A variety of Specialty Classes will also be offered throughout the summer. These classes will include, dance, martial arts, fitness and exercise, basketball and Teen Scene. The Pools at Hunt Park, located at 4015 Jackson Ave. and Arlington Park, located at 3860 Van Buren Blvd. will be open from June 15–August 22. Recreational swim and swim lessons will be offered. Free Recreation swim, sponsored by the Riverside Police Activities League will be available on Fridays from June 21 – July 12. Residents are encouraged to visit the Parks and Recreation website at www.Riverside ca.gov for a complete list of programs and services, class schedules and fees. For additional information please call (951) 826-2000. The city has worked tirelessly over the past seven years to improve all our parks and make them a fun and safe place for our residents to visit, especially our children. We encourage you to check out all of Riverside’s wonderful parks and exciting programs. I wish you all a happy, fun and safe summer. — Councilman Chris MacArthur Ward 6 Update Thank You for 12 Great Years Hi Ward 6! The time has come to say Farewell. I will be in the office till June 18th. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the Ward 6 residents and businesses for the kindnesses you have all shown me over the last 12 years. We have gotten a lot done and have many great projects finished and an amazing number still in the pipeline that Jim will finish up for the betterment of all of us and the city in general. Thank you all for the vote on Measure A. The cuts that would have had to be made would have proven a big hit to our quality of life. We have the best city around because we are willing to fund the things that make a difference to how we live. You get what you are willing to pay to have. I don’t believe cities should have great bank accounts to sit on. That money is meant to be spent now and in times of disaster. Cutting of the purse strings sounds laudable until your street needs fixed, your house catches fire or some other need arises like a new park for all to enjoy. You elect people to office to help make those decisions with your input. I backed Jim and gave him my support because I believe he will be a good leader and take us to the next step of raising the bar in our community. You evidently do too by the number of votes. Thank you all again for the pleasure of having served you in the PTA, on the Alvord School Board and on the city council. We’ve had a good run. See you around in all the right places of service as the beat goes on. — Councilwoman Nancy Hart Welcome, Jim Perry! The residents of Ward 6 have spoken and their new City Councilman is Jim Perry. Jim is a retired Police Lieutenant and has been a resident of Ward 6 for the past 22 years. Although his first day on the job is Tuesday, June 18th, Jim has been on the job representing his constituents for many years serving as a volunteer on various boards and commissions. Riverside Parking, Traffic and Streets Commission, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office Division of Victim Services and he proudly served as a volunteer for our own Arlington Business Partnership. Some organizations he’s been involved in include the Riverside Metropolitan Museum Board, the Please join us in welcoming Jim to Ward 6 and wishing him only the best! Arlington Times-0613 6/14/13 3:42 PM Page 2 Business Spotlight VM Dental Group Helping people perfect their smiles is what drew Dr. Suraj Pal Sharma (DDS) into the field of General Dentistry. “I was fascinated with my own dentist as a child,” remarked Dr. Sharma, and that compelled him to decide while in college to start his own dental business. The office is located at 5515 Van Buren Blvd., near Philbin Avenue The team at VM Dental in-house financing to patients that qualify. Along with maintaining reasonable prices, he has incorporated coupons in the Pennysaver along with coupons/flyers handed out by his staff. “In times like this, you have to find ways to draw people to you – aside from providing great service – to stay in business,” stated Sharma. Suraj Pal Sharma, D.D.S., Owner Dr. Sharma chose Riverside as the location for VM Dental Group because he had friends living in the area and felt a connection to the City. He appreciates the kindness of people who live here and also enjoys the cleanliness of the City compared to others he’s visited. He is very pleased with Riverside as a location for his small business. The success of his business is in no small part due to his staff. His Front Office Manager is Elizabeth Varela and she’s been working there for 4 years. Karina Lopez is his Back Office Manager, and she’s been at VM Dental Group for 5 years. Another key member of his team is Dental Hygienist, Melissa Totten. She graduated from RCC in 2011, and is a native of Riverside. She works once a week, and has been at VM Dental since January of this year. “We are very pleased to have her a part of our team. Patients compliment her work every week.” His office on Van Buren Blvd. has been open for 8 years and he has one other office on Mission Boulevard in Glen Avon. Although he still sees a steady stream of patients since the economic downturn, he finds that many of his patients just can’t afford their treatments due to lack of income. He’s been able to overcome that by partnering with two companies that assist with payment plans and also by offering Pennsylvania, Dr. Georgieff is only at the office once a month for ortho exams. “He is a very experienced and kind doctor, and our office is happy he has joined us.” VM Dental offers dental services including implants, root canal treatment, cerec crowns, teeth cleanings, sleep apnea treatment and much more. The office is located at 5515 Van Buren Blvd. near Philbin Avenue. The office can be reached at 951-352-5838, via email at [email protected] or on the web at vmdentistry.com. Orthodontist, Dr George Georgieff, has been practicing for over 53 year and he recently joined VM Dental Group. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Van Buren Drive-In Converts to Digital Word from Hollywood is they will no longer distribute 35-millimeter film prints to movie theaters later this year. Most indoor theaters have already converted to digital and recently, our own Van Buren Drive-In made the change too. The owner of the theater also owns the Mission Drive-In Theater in Montclair and they made the investment of several hundred thousand dollars in order to make the switch in April. The expense included equipment, installation and remodeling of the projection booths. Although drive-ins have had a tough time surviving as an industry, they have made a comeback in the past decade mainly due to lower ticket prices. Locals in the community speak of the theater’s nostalgic charm and opportunity for family time. The theater is clean, the quality of the movie is just as good as an indoor theater and the food in the snack bar is really good. We’ve also heard comments about the ability to accommodate families who have a lot of children or children with special needs. Make it a point to visit the Van Buren Drive-In this summer and enjoy the view from your vehicle.
