Chevron STAR Rings by Marjorie Rhine I Chevron Star Rings, 58½" x 73½", by Marjorie Rhine enjoy creating new designs from traditional favorites. My most recent series is based on the Double Wedding Ring block—but without the curves. Changing the piecing and substituting straight-line seams in strategic locations give the resulting quilt the look of curved piecing without the challenge of curved seams. For more detailed information on making quilts, see the AQS Quiltmaking Essentials & Tested Tips at www.AmericanQuilter.com. 72 American Quilter September 2009 Cutting 45˚ diamonds FABRIC & CUTTING REQUIREMENTS For the B patches, cut 11 strips 1½" x 40". Line up the 45º line on the rotary ruler with the bottom edge of a fabric strip. Trim away the strip end (fig. 1) and discard. Quilt size: 58¹⁄₂" x 73¹⁄₂" Finished block size: 7¹⁄₂" x 7¹⁄₂ 1½" strip 45˚ line Fig. 1 Rotate the strip 180˚. Place the 45º line on the ruler along the strip edge to ensure that cuts are made at the correct angle and then cut 1½" wide diamonds from the strip (fig.2). Cut 192 B patches. Skill level: Intermediate • Requirements are based on 40" fabric width. • Cut strips from selvage to selvage unless otherwise noted. Then cut strips for the strip-sets parallel to the selvages. Finally, cut any remaining needed strips perpendicular to the selvages. An extra 2" has been added to the length to allow for adjustments. SUPPLIES: Small- to medium-size square rotary ruler, fabric marking pencil or pen 45˚ line 1½" line ROTARY CUTTING A B Tip: You can use this process to cut any 45º diamond. Just remember that the width of the cut diamond equals the width of the strip. – see “Cutting 45° diamonds” 4⁷⁄₈" x 4⁷⁄₈" 1¾" Press Preparing the strip-sets and cutting strip segments Sew strips together in the order shown in figure 3 to make a strip-set X. Offset each strip 1½" from the previous strip before sewing. Press the seam allowances as directed by the arrow, pressing after each strip addition. Make 6 strip-sets X Sew the remaining 40" strips together in the order shown in figure 4 to make 6 strip-sets Y. Offset each strip 1½" from previous strip before sewing. Press seam allowances as you go. Press the seam allowances toward the triangles (fig. 14). Make 48 blocks (fig. 15). Cut 48 Piecing the blocks Sew each X segment to a Y segment, matching seams carefully (fig. 9). The narrower green patches must be at the point of the unit. Press the seam allowances open. Make 48. A Y X Fig. 9 A X-Y Unit – make 48 Align the 45˚ line on the square rotary ruler with the long center seam of each X-Y unit. Adjust the ruler so the adjacent 1½" lines on the ruler are at the point where the green seams intersect at the end of the unit as shown (fig. 10). Trim away the points and discard. Using the marking pencil or pen, draw a line from tip to tip on the wrong side of each B patch (fig. 11). 74 Fig. 14 American Quilter September 2009 Fig. 15 Block – Make 48 Assembling the quilt Quilting and finishing Arrange the blocks in 8 horizontal rows of 6 blocks each. Sew the blocks together in rows as shown in the quilt assembly diagram. Press the seam allowances in adjacent rows in opposite directions. Sew the rows together. Press the seam allowances in one direction. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Baste the layers together. I used an allover paisley-style quilting pattern. Another quilting design option is shown in Fig. 16. Sew the binding strips together to make 274" of continuous binding. Finish the edges of your quilt with double-fold binding. Adding the borders Using bias seams, sew the 2¼" dark green strips together to make one long strip. Press the quilt top well. Measure the vertical length of the quilt through the center and cut 2 dark green strips this measurement for border #1. Sew the borders to the long sides of the quilt. Press the seam allowances away from the quilt center. Measure the width of the quilt through the center, including the side borders you just added. Cut 2 dark green strips this length and sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press the seam allowances away from the quilt center. Add the border #2 strips, measuring and trimming as you did before. Fig. 16 Alternate coloration Quilt assembly September 2009 American Quilter 75
