■ Local woman killed in Lyons shooting
Reidsville resident Ashley D. Sharpe, 29, died Friday
afternoon after she was reportedly shot somewhere in
Lyons. The exact time of the shooting and other details
are sketchy, but Lyons Police Chief Wesley Walker said
that two women, Ashley D. Sharpe and Barbara A. Polke, 35, both of Reidsville were said to be riding in Lyons at an unconirmed location and stopped at an intersection. Polke stated that a black male approached
and ired two shots into the vehicle. One bullet struck
Sharpe in the head. Polke said she panicked and drove
back to Reidsville where she dialed 911 and local police
and emergency medical units responded. Sharpe was
pronounced dead at the Reidsville location on Bryant
Road. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Tattnall
County Sheriff’s Ofice, and Lyons Police Department
are investigating the incident.

for community web portal

shared ideas for a new
community web portal
with the Candler County
Archway
Partnership
Executive Committee on
July 8.
Dr. Davis is the coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Writing Certiicate Program in the
Department of English at
the University of Georgia.
During the Spring 2014
Semester, students in
her “Writing for the Web”
and “Technical Writing”
classes worked with representatives from the City
of Metter, Candler County
Commissioners, Candler
County Industrial Authority and Metter-Candler
Chamber of Commerce to
help design a comprehensive online strategy for
the community.
The major recommendations included developing a new “Better in Metter” website, revising the
Candler Industrial Park
website and implementing social media throughout these main sites to
encourage active participation and a strong identity.
Both sites, she suggested, should be reorganized
for streamlined structure,
cohesive text and updated photos. Social media,
she said, offers outlets for
all the people in Metter
to answer the question,

Davis said the new and
revised websites would be
easier to navigate, offer
better information and

the City of Metter. Maintaining an active and consistent web presence will

to offer, she added.

■ Child dies after underage vehicle driver strikes tree
A ive-year-old child died Saturday after the pickup truck in which he was riding struck a tree on
Four Acre Road in south Toombs County. According
to Toombs County Sheriff Alvie Kight, a 14-year-old
male child was driving the truck when the accident
occurred. Four passengers ranging in ages from 3-10
were riding in the back of the truck when it hit the
tree. The ive-year-old was thrown from the truck. He
was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. The
other occupants of the vehicle were all taken to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia.

■ Tax sale: county and city to auction properties
Approximately 55 property owners in Jenkins
County and 30 owners in the City of Millen will have
their properties sold on August 5 if they fail to pay
their delinquent property taxes. The sale will take
place on the Jenkins County Courthouse lawn from
10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
■ JCHS/JCMS combine and prepare for 2014-15
The Jenkins County Middle School and Jenkins
County High School will be combined this year under one leadership team and has been renamed Jenkins County Middle/High School. Rob Gray will serve
as principal with Assistant Principals Josh Fleming,
John Paul Hearn and Kimberly Dasher.

■ Schools say bye to CRCT, preparing for new GA Milestones
Out with the old and in with the new. Georgia Dept.
of Education announced a new testing system would
be implemented during the coming 2014-15 academic
year, and Evans County Schools have been steadily
preparing for the new test while still ensuring students were ready to take the Criterion-Referenced
Competency Tests for the last time. In Evans County,
ifth grade scores relect the most overall improvement on the last CRCT while fourth grade scores were
the lowest. Evans County third graders also excelled
in math scores this year with an 80 percent pass rate.

be available on the web
offered these students a
unique experience.
“We believe that if Candler County adheres to
the
recommendations
in this report, economic
growth will follow.”

■ Liberty Co. high-speed chase ends near Tattnall Co. line
A high-speed chase that began in Liberty County
ended in Long County near the Tattnall County line,
with the pursued driver facing multiple charges. According to GSP Patrol Sergeant John Snipe, a little
before 5 p.m. on Saturday, deputies from the Liberty
County Sheriff’s Ofice began chasing a white van
near Groover Road in a routine trafic stop. The highspeed chase led across the county line, and units from
the Long County Sheriff’s Ofice also became involved.
Snipe said that Sergeant Gary Eason who is with the
Liberty County ofice, hit the van in its rear, attempting a pit maneuver to stop the driver. He said at this
point, the van crossed over the road, hitting a ditch.
Snipe said when the van hit the ditch, it then became
airborne, lying over the driveway and coming to rest
on its side, colliding with a mailbox. Upon arrival, the
driver was out of the vehicle.

was recently awarded two
scholarships by Pinewood
Christian Academy Headmaster Harold Roach.
Ridge was the recipient
of the Pinewood Christian
Academy Faculty Scholarship and the Clydes
Market Scholarship. Each
scholarship is $1,000.
The PCA Faculty Scholarship is voted on by all
faculty members of PCA
from the 3 year old class
to senior teachers. Teachers and administrators
are asked to vote for one
male and one female student that they feel represent integrity, academic
success, respect, friendliness, dedication, patriotism and leadership both
at school and off campus.
Students are required
to submit an essay and
undergo an interview process as well.

Mosley elected to GMA board
Metter City Manager Joseph Mosley was
elected to the Board of
Directors for the Georgia
Municipal
Association
during the association’s
annual meeting in Savannah June 23.
Mosley will serve on the
board as president of the
City Manager Section.
“We are pleased to have
Mr. Mosley taking on this
leadership position,” said
GMA Executive Director Lamar Norton. “He’s
well respected by his colleagues and I’m sure he’ll
provide great leadership
to cities across Georgia.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to support
the Candler Co. Physicians Scholarship Fund
at the Georgia Health
Sciences Foundation in
Augusta.
