There were also many different businesses and organizations involved in the parade such as the NAACP, BiLo, and the local recreation department. People lined the streets just to see the Homecoming Parade. There were people from the library all the way around to the Jet to see the floats and cars and horses. Everyone start- Red Ribbon Week at MHS By: Anna Jackson Every year the students at Metter High School participate in Red Ribbon week. During this week, starting on October 23rd and ending on October 30th, high school students of all grades follow different types of themes to show they are drug free. On Friday, the students dressed in Tiger colors for spirit day. The following Monday was called be a warrior against drugs in which everyone wore camouflage. Sock it to drugs took place on Tuesday. Students had to wear the craziest socks they owned. In support of Red Ribbon Week, MHS students dressed in all red. This activity was called Paint the Town Red and took place on Wednesday. Thursday was pretty busy. It not only had the theme of dressing up but also a teen maze. The guys wore ties and the girls wore bows to tie down drugs. Teen Maze consisted of different stages that showed the ed screaming as the fire trucks topped with our own Metter Tigers and cheerleaders passed. The trucks turned on the sirens and went on by. Also, Freight Train did the Freight Train Whistle©™ in the speakerphone. After the parade, everybody went to get ready for the game. The floats were judged and the Freshmen were very happy as they won the title of best float. People’s spirits were high and many wondered, after a parade like this, what surprises would the game hold. consequences of careless actions and lasted all throughout the day. On the last day of Red Ribbon Week, Friday, we had to dress up like a character from a book. For every student that dressed up to show they were drug free, their names were drawn later that afternoon for the three top cat cards. The twelve winners were announced in the afternoon announcements and fifty prizes were also sent out. Overall, Red Ribbon Week was a success and had many participants. Powder Puff Football Game By: Alex Spivey On Thursday, October 15, 2009, Metter High School had their annual powder puff football game. The students at MHS participated in this event out of the many during homecoming week. All of the powder puff activities were held at the high school football field. All of the upper- and lower- classmen participated in this event. The freshmen played the juniors and the sophomores played the seniors. The school played these events for fun. This also gives the girls a chance to play football and the boys a chance to be cheerleaders. Last year’s results were upsetting for the lower classmen. The freshman lost to the juniors. The sophomores also lost to the seniors. This year’s results were a little better, the freshmen lost to the juniors but beat the sophomores. The seniors were the dominant players and beat the sophomores and tied the juniors. MHS Students Experience Teen Maze On Thursday, October 29, 2009, Metter High School’s ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders had a chance to experience the critical consequences of making bad decisions. Metter High School’s underclassmen wove their way through a frightening realistic maze of life called Teen Maze. The students that participated experienced bad situations caused by bad choices such as pregnancy, catching an STD (sexually transmitted disease), jail/prison time, and death. However, participating students also experienced good situations such as graduating from high school and getting a career. “This pregnancy thing is not good,” says Matt Conner, a junior at Metter High School. Matt experienced the unfortunate simulation of teen pregnancy. At the end of the maze, he by: Allison Clemons learned that it is not good to have sex before marriage because the consequences may result in a baby; possibly deformed and/or premature. Teen Maze is a challenge for teenagers to graduate and earn a career without getting caught by pregnancy or STDs. Through the maze, each student will learn how alcohol and drugs could lead to depression, jail time, babies, diseases, or death. “Teen Maze is good for the students because it makes them aware of consequences and making bad decisions,” says MHS principal John Jordan, “We are trying our best to educate the students and heighten awareness of destructive decisions. My hopes are that by exposing students to semi-realities of destructive decisions, they will learn to make better choices.” Teen Maze, sponsored by many businesses of Candler County, is hoping to lower the rates of STDs and teen pregnancy by informing teenagers of the consequences of making certain decisions. Metter High School also thanks the businesses who supported and contributed to the success of Teen Maze. Tiger Brigade by:Kaitlyn Stokes This year was a new experience for the Metter Tiger Brigade. Under the guidance of Mr. Walden (Band Director), Ms. O’Connor (Assistant Band Director), and Mrs. Mullins (Guard Instructor), the band attended and performed at the football games as well as other events. They performed during each game during halftime. This year’s show was the performance of “Tribute to an American Icon: Michael Jackson”. The band played well known songs including Jackson’s biggest hit, “Thriller”. The Metter Tiger Brigade also attended Georgia Southern’s Band Day on September 19, 2009. This day consisted of bands from around the area coming together to learn new songs and, for the guard, routines. At halftime of the Georgia Southern vs. Western Carolina game, the bands performed with the GSU band. “Performing with GSU was very fun. It gave us an oppor- tunity to show off our skills, “says Starr Howard, the Tiger Brigade’s xylophonist. The Tiger Brigade also attended the Costal Classic band competition in Effingham. They performed their show as well as watched the other bands from around the region. The Tiger Brigade placed fourth in their level. The percussion section of the band was awarded a Superior, the highest scoring, for their hard work. Drum Major Jamaal Green was also awarded with an Excellent. This season has been a good season for the Metter Tiger Brigade and preparations for next season are already under way. Features Candler County’s Teacher of the Year Mrs. Courtney Alligood was named Metter High School’s Teacher of the Year and the Candler County Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Alligood is one out of four educators awarded at the annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on Tuesday, November 10th. The recipient of Candler County Teacher of the Year was announced by none other than Dr. Tom Bigwood, Candler County Superintendent. Mrs. Alligood will now continue on to compete By: Jamaal Green for other honors within this state. Mrs. Alligood will also have many opportunities to share with other educators from all over the state who have received the same honor. Congratulations to Mrs. Courtney Alligood! Mr. Sean Patrick Mr. Sean Patrick is the new History student teacher for Mr. Doolittle. He is currently enrolled in Georgia Southern University and is majoring in History Education. As a second job, he is currently coaching football at ECI and he has been an assistant coach there for four years. He grew up with two sisters, one currently a senior and the other a sophomore attending ECI, and he says that they got along very well (unlike most sibling relationships these days). Mr. Patrick said that during his teen years, he didn’t have a teen idol, but he did have someone he looked up to: his father. He also said that his biggest fear growing up was the dark. During his high school By: Jamaal Green years, he attended Swainsboro High School. His favorite teacher was actually the assistant principal, but he got along with all of them pretty good. When asked about a huge thing that happened when he was in school, he recalls being in tenth grade when the 9/11 incident occurred in 2001. His first real job was working at a plant in Swainsboro (Swainsboro Electroplating). Mr.Patrick says it was very hot and nasty, and he didn’t like getting dirty. He is currently married to his high school sweetheart and they have been together for four years. He will listen to any type of music except country. Whatever mood he is in can change his style of music. On T.V. he will watch anything that is about sports, and his favorite video games are games that involve football. By now we can probably tell he is a huge football fanatic. He also loves them U.G.A Dawg’s. He will be leaving us here at MHS December 4, 2009. So he can continue his journey on becoming a teacher as he wanted to when he was in Twinnie Tai and Brenda Bezerra New faces to Metter High School By: Jamaal Green Twinnie Tai is one of our newest members of MHS. She has come all the way from Hong Kong, China to be with us. Her intentions on coming here is to further her education in college so she can help her father, Yuen-Hung Tai, and her mother, Ying-Han Chan. She is an extraordinary teenager who has many friends whom she likes to hang out with including her best friend Natalie. Twinnie thinks that she is a very mature girl who By: Twinnie Tai Brenda Bezerra, a gorgeous, sweet, funny, talented Brazilian sixteen year old young lady, is Metter High School’s newest exchange student from Brazil. She is currently staying with Mr. David Koneman, Mrs. Sabrina Koneman and their daughter Caitlyn Koneman. They also house another exchange student, Twinnie Tai, who is from Hong Kong. Brenda lives with both of her parents in Brazil. She also has an elder sister in her family, who is currently 20 years old. Her sister is studying college classes in Brazil. Brenda was encouraged to join this exchange program because she wants to improve her English. Like most of the typical Brazil- is very respectful to everyone and anyone. Twinnie goes to Christian Alliance S.C. Chan Memorial College which is a high school in Hong Kong. She had to wear a uniform at her school. Her favorite subject in china was History. Coincidentally, Twinnie’s history teacher was her favorite teacher, Ms.To. Ms. To is her favorite teacher because she is willing to help others with whatever they need help with. Also, if Ms. To heard a cell phone ring in class, she would just say turn your phone off and put it away; not take it away like other teachers. Twinnie got to school by walking and taking the subway. Twinnie’s favorite game is basketball. However, since she has been here in the United States, softball and volleyball is also fa- vorite sports. I asked Twinnie if she remembered any major things happening before she left china, and she say’s that she recalled H1N1 shutting her whole school and church down for a week. She plans on going to college here in America at either SCAD or GSU. Twinnie is undecided on what she would like to major in, but she did want to be a Psychologist. But since her stay in America, Twinnie eyes have been opened to much, much more. Her interests are Trucks, Damin Rice (an Irish singer), and Jason Mraz. Her favorite TV show is “Gossip Girl”. Twinnie is a very talented person and will do great things in her future. Metter High School is lucky to have such a wonderful attribution. ian girls, Brenda likes going to the beach during her free time, going to parties, dancing, and listening to music. Besides knowing how to dance the traditional Brazil dancing, she also knows how to dance ballet and tap dance. Brenda also loves eating. Her favorite American food is Zaxby’s chicken. She also loves eating Ranch dressing with every kind of food and snacking on Subway’s cookies. “Most of the schools in Brazil are private and we need to wear a uniform to go to school.” Brenda said. Brenda’s school in Brazil starts at 7:20 A.M. Students don’t have lunch during school time, and they leave school at 12:50 P.M. Students in Brazil take all of their subjects at one time, and students in different grades study in the same classroom (which is very different from American schools). Brenda thinks her American parents are more protective than her Brazilian parents are. They have many more apartments in Brazil than America does, and she lives in an apartment with her parents. Transportation in Brazil is different than that of the USA. They use taxi cabs more than we do here in little ‘ole Metter. However, the personal cars in Brazil are like those here in America. There are a lot of things in common between Brazil and USA such as clothes and music. Brenda would like to study college here, but it mainly depends on her parents’ decision. Anyway, let’s welcome Brenda to Metter High School! ! ! ! Advice from you peers whenever you need it. What should I do? - Confused F.A.B., I need help. This is a big school with a lot of cool people I don’t know. I want to get to know them, but I’m not sure how. How can I make friends quickly without being weird? - Lonely Dear Lonely, Okay you want to make new friends and you just aren’t sure what to do. It’s actually pretty easy. Almost everyone wants to meet other people and feel understood. If you feel a little afraid, build yourself up in advance. Tell yourself that everyone likes me and I like everyone else. Just go for it. Worst case is that you have smiled at someone. If they reject you, just move on to the next person. Also, letting others know that you think they’re funny makes them feel good and shows them you’re interested in what they think. It also shows you have a good sense of humor, which is one of the things people look for in friends. - Allison F.A.B., When someone is laughing, I look around to see who and what they are laughing at. When I can’t find something funny, it makes me uneasy. If someone behind you is laughing, are they laughing at you? - Paranoid Dear Paranoid, Not necessarily. It depends on their actions. If they roll their eyes at you or look you up and down, then it is very likely that their laughing at you. Other than that, they are problem just laughing at an inside joke, or maybe someone else behind you did something stupid or ridiculous that was funny to them. Don’t worry about it. Only you know if there is something funny about the way you act or look. Don’t worry about what others say because they know nothing about you. - Flor F.A.B., I want to join more than one Dear Confused, If I was you, I would just join the one club that I wanted to go to most. In my opinion, joining two club 1s or 2s is probably a bad idea because you either have to choose between the two clubs or cut time from the clubs (which isn’t good considering club time is very short as it is). Don’t stress yourslef. Choose one club to go to every other Friday. - Brandon F. A. B. is Tiger Pride’s newest advice column. Every question in this column is real and anonymous. If you need any advice and wish to contact F. A. B., you can send your questions to tigerpride@metter. org or you can contact Allison Clemons. Every queston WILL be anonymous. Just when I think that I might win, You smile again and draw me in. So, I’m trapped….. Like an animal, In the cold, hungry, alone, and on the edge. Leaning blindly, my toes are on a ledge. Falling now with my eyes closed, And just when I’m ready to go, You’re there again, Smiling, I’m a slave. Entangled-how must I behave? Should I smile too? And belong to you? Or should I frown free, and become something new. Every poem had it’s own design from broken hearts to cheerful days. We appreciate your participation in this edition of the newspaper. We are also glad to present the top three most favored poems by the judges for this edition. Prizes were given to these poems that were exceptional to our readers. Hopefully, you agree as you read the words of others. Thank you! 2nd Place: 3rd Place: Saved Red Popsicle He never knew a mother’s love. He has no coat, he has no gloves. As I sit there and feed the doves, I ask my savior up above. There’s purple. There’s pink. There’s blue. There’s orange. He sleeps alone on the roadside. I would feel guilty if he died. He is not loved, he is denied. I knew he feels great pain inside. The kids run around All happy and far from broken. Though there’s one And she’s over there beyond. I know that he is all alone. By: Starr Howard Football By: Ben Powell As soon as school started, so did the football season. It was the time of year that high school football fans gathered as their home team either won or lost an exciting game. As Metter’s football season kicked off, everyone had high hopes that this year, we would have a winning season and save our reputation. As you know, the past couple of years we haven’t really had a good season and everybody was in high hopes when we beat Portal in the first game. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there as the season ended with a total of three wins and seven losses. It may have started out bad, but it ended with a bang when the Tigers played their last game in a rematch against Portal, which was a very exciting game. Ever since we beat the Wildcats in the first game, their (Portal) game play began to improve and they posed a threat against the Tigers. By the time the first half was over, the Tigers were lagging behind with a score of 26-7, but in the last minute of the fourth quarter, they managed to score a last minute touchdown turning the score into 34-32. After the end of the sea- Sports son, Coach Hill is already looking towards the future. “Next year’s team looks promising, because this year’s team only consisted of five seniors, but with 21 returning juniors, we might have a better season next year.” Coach Hill has also stated that he is fixing to begin Metter’s off season conditioning program to prepare for the next year. As the next year comes around, so does another exciting year of football. Hopefully, our team will be able to improve and have several splendid wins. Our Cheerleaders have come a long way! They traveled to SEB and went against many different high schools in the region. Senior Cheerleader, Faith Cole- man, said “The challenge is good, and has definitely taught me to be patient with people.” Metter High School had a great end of their Competitive Season. Our Cheerleaders got 3rd in Region. Good Job Girls! Raiders Above: Metter High School’s Raider team competes at Hephzibah. The Raider team traveled to Hephzibah, Georgia on Saturday, September 26, 2009 for a Raider meet. The Raider team is a JROTC team composed of male and female JROTC Cadets. Along with the everyday Physical Training, Team members work on individual events such as the Rope Bridge, Cross Country Rescue, Team Run, and the Army One-Act Play Competition By: Allison Clemons The Metter High School drama department competed at the Region Literary One-Act Play Competition for the first time on November 6, 2009 for the first time in about twelve years. The drama department traveled to Southeastern Tech in Vidalia to compete with eleven other schools. Metter High School received seventh place for the oneact play, Conversation Therapy by Bradley Hayward. “The cast and crew worked very hard,” says director Felicia Odum, “Seventh place was really an accomplishment because this was the first time we competed at this particular literary event.” The drama department also performed their one-act play for the community at the Wilcox Auditorium on November 12, 2009. Conversation Therapy is about a high school conversation therapy room turning into a zoo when a group of crazy students attempts to save their beloved teacher’s position. They try everything they can to save her job, but over the course of the play it becomes apparent why they’re all in therapy in the first place. Mrs. Felicia Odum patiently guided the cast along with the help of Stephanie Comny, the student director. The cast of Conversation Therapy includes Allison Clemons as Ms. Whittle, Janice Thomas as Mindy, Andrew Smith as Cort, Nick Tallent as Woody, Valerie Trevino as Lily, Alexa Fanny as Jayne, Elijah Baxter as Kyle, Kayla Dailey as Betty, Dashia Scott as Netty, PT test. The workload of an average Raider Team member will prepare them for the many competitions against Raider Teams of other High Schools, Prep Schools, and Private Schools. “The Raider Team gives you the skills you’re going to need in life,” says First Sergeant Hector Vazquez. Raider members strive for team work, discipline, strategy, and mental, as well as, physical strength. These skills are important for each member as they work together to compete with other schools. Raider competitions are unlike any other high school sporting event. Schools do not compete against other schools according to class. The 2009 Raider Season has been overall excellent with Metter winning second place four times and first place once out of five competitions. Metter won first place at Hephzibah and took home with them the Marauder Cup. Metter’s Raider team includes Michael Vedder, Aaztrid Gonzalez, Andew Smith, Stephanie Conmy, Nathan Wolfe, Jamar Williams, Ronnie Harden, Malik Newbill, Brianna Lancaster, Julio Salazar, Kayla Gonzalez, Shakiel Marlin, Blake Bankey, Aliesha Tillman, Nancy Nevarez, Jaime Olarte, Martha Perez, Javier Escalona, and Jose Martinez. Editorials Red Ribbon Week by:Starr Howard “Don’t smoke or you’ll croak” If you’ve heard or seen that before it was probably on your way to a class on the five hundred hall. On that hall, students from this semesters health class has posted clear updates on drugs. There are many that state straight forwardly what kind of things would happen to you if you were to do such an irresponsible thing. How could you destroy your life and not think twice about it? So coincidently, Red Ribbon week decides to set its settlement here, making us understand our possible consequences and our future before we make stupid decisions. Monday, kicked off “Camouflage” day. Tuesday, was “Sock it to Drugs day”, where students wear their craziest socks. Wednesday proceeded on to “Wear All Red” day, where students dress in all red to show that they’re drug free. Thursday, was “Bows and Ties” day, where males wore ties and the ladies hair bows or a bow of such. Lastly, Friday ended the week with the opportunity to share the creativity of costumes. Students were encouraged to come to school dressed as a book character. Another event during Red Ribbon Week was on Thursday. Teen Maze came to Metter High. Teen Homecomming Week by:Kaitlyn Stokes Homecoming comes once a year stirring up emotions of excitement and determination amidst the student body as well as the faculty. During this particular week, students gain access of more freedom with enjoyable ways to express themselves throughout events. Although, these events are a little crazy and the people dress a bit outrageously, a majority of the students are involved and enjoy participating. The spread of such joy entices people to have that positive attitude, faith, and pride in our Tigers to win the big game. Everyday during Homecoming Week, there are events that take place at the school. Because Monday was a holiday, Tuesday kicked off the festivities by being Flashback Day. On that day, students came to school in outdated clothes ranging from approximately the 1700’s to the 1990’s. The student that dressed according to attire in the 1700’s was certainly an eyeful of creativity. Wednesday was the day where students hop out of bed and come to school. Yes, that’s right; pajama day. Thankfully all students followed the dress code and had a splendid time in being comfortable all day. Thursday was the thing that all teens dread on Maze is where students had the privilege to get a hint of the life they were to live if they were to do things such as drugs, have unprotected sex, drink and drive, etc. This event gave Metter High’s students a chance to see the consequences of their choices and define their personal morals with the help of several different businesses in the community. Teen Maze as well as the rest of the week are good ideas to influence the students. regular days, or some of them anyway; tacky day! Tacky day was expressed throughout so many students’ creativity and personality. Though on Friday, things went back to normal as Metter High showed their spirit through spirit day. This day students wore orange and black for the following homecoming game to follow after that same night. Metter High’s students certainly got a kick out the previous homecoming events These events were fun ways to express our team spirit. It was a week to rejuvenate the school and pump up our Tiger football players. Our players played a good game but the highlight of the game was halftime. As a member of band, I was able to see the representatives up close as each of these ladies was escorted down the fifty yard line. Homecoming week was eventful and fun.
