“Our class of 2015 was
successful in completing scholarship
applications and received awards
of over a million dollars per High
School. However, we want to remind
our students that we have local
organizations that award scholarships
and it is beneficial for them to apply
for all scholarships that will assist with
their education”, said Monica Garcia,
Director of Student Support Services.
Information can be found on
the district website. Some of the local
scholarship offerings are: Edgewood
Education Foundation, Edgewood
Veterans, Compadres for Scholarships,
Edgewood Alumni, Kennedy Class

Message from the superintendent
Hello, Edgewood community!
The 2014-2015 school year has ended and I hope
you can look forward to the summer.
Over the last year, we served our students and
community to the best of our ability. Every day, we have
the privilege of providing rich learning experiences for
the students to ensure they reach their goals.
We are always moving the district forward, and
that includes fulfilling the daily needs of our students,
Dr. José A. Cervantes
employees,
and community. We never sacrifice the
Superintendent
safety and wellbeing of the Edgewood family, and
most importantly, we do not stop providing the best customer service
possible. I assure you, we do whatever is necessary to operate Edgewood
as responsible and competent stewards.
As the majority of our staff and students are home for the summer,
many employees are still on duty planning and preparing for next school
year. No two school years are ever the same; there are always new goals
and expectations. I am excited for what lies ahead.
For example, next school year, all 10 elementary schools will have
a fine arts magnet program. Edgewood Veterans Stadium will have a new
press box. Construction of a new band hall at Kennedy High School will
begin soon. Our schools and facilities will continue to be the safest in Bexar
County.
I am grateful for having an amazing team of talented and dedicated
people in Edgewood. Our employees’ commitment to the 12,000 students
and their passion for education was obvious every time I visited a campus.
Being a superintendent is challenging, but my greatest job satisfaction is
seeing and hearing the excitement in our students when they learn a new
skill or use a new product for the first time.
Everything we propose and recommend is for the overall good of our
students and employees. I am optimistic that Edgewood ISD will prevail and
continue to be a source of hope and pride for students and this community.

by dedicating a Little Free Library at
various local public schools to honor
veterans of the San Antonio area.

in the communities where the libraries
are placed by providing ready access
to books.
Little Free Library is a “take a
book, return a book” gathering place
where neighbors share their favorite
literature and stories. In its most basic
form, the library is a box full of books
where anyone may stop by and pick
up a book, or two, and bring back
another book to share.
Little Free Library honors local
service members who died in wars
from Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan
by placing the tiny libraries in
communities such as Edgewood ISD.
The Little Library at Winston is
dedicated to Marine Corps Cpl. Jorge

Kennedy HS in 2006 and was killed in
Afghanistan in 2010.

reading skills by reading a book a day

the borrowed books is an important
part of the process in keeping the
library stocked for others to use.

After-School Program receives grant
The After-School Program at Loma Park ES received a grant from the
Sundt Foundation. The grant will be used to purchase books for the program.
Alexis Marshall, Employee Owner from the Sundt Construction, Inc.
presented Dr. Patricia Karam, Executive Director of Greater San Antonio AfterSchool All-Stars, with a check for $3,234 to purchase age-appropriate and
interesting books to improve reading comprehension skills of the Challenge
participants. The reading comprehension level of students is most important in
academic success. Several strategies will be implemented to increase reading
skills. The books will be used in read-aloud activities where either the instructor
or another student reads a book to a larger group, or with partner reading
where two students take turns reading to each other, or in silent reading by
the individual student using a book of his/her choice. The purchased books will
be selected by the Program Coordinator for the 10 elementary campuses and
Brentwood Middle School in Edgewood ISD.

Dancing with the Children honors dance champions
Presents Lola Falana Award
Edgewood ISD elementary
students dusted off their dancing
shoes and prepared for the annual
Dancing with Children competition.
Students in grades 2nd, 3rd, and
4th, annually compete for the title of
dance champions.
Students receive more than
a lesson in dance while attending
sessions with the Dance Therapy/
Dancing with the Children. Students
benefit from exposure to positive role
models and learning about building
their own self-esteem.
“Dance Therapy’ Dance Your
Depression Away!, Inc., a nonprofit
organization helping children, adults
and seniors deal with obesity and
depression through dance. The
program integrated Latin ballroom
dance with counseling, spiritual
discovery and cultural education.
Jorge Perez, CEO, launched the
community-wide San Antonio Mayors’
Dance Challenge. Each dance
session allows six elementary schools
and over 200 children to participate.
“Everything we do is about family and
community,” said Perez. It creates a
cascading effect. “When you have a
healthy child, you have a healthy family.
When you have healthy families,
you create healthy neighborhoods.
Healthy neighborhoods encompass a
healthy city,” he added.
The Dancing with Children
program held individual competitions
at
the
following
campuses:
Gardendale ES; Las Palmas;
Gonzalez ES; Stafford ES; Loma
Park ES; and Cisneros ES. Finals
for the competition were held at The
Neighborhood Place.
The finalists were treated
to a “Red Carpet” competition for
Dancing with Children and brought in
professional dancers Robert Ramirez
and Adriana Bruton; Christopher
Sullivan; and Street Urchin Dance
Group. Music was provided by Eddie
Bermudez Orquestra.
Perez, encourages students
and parents to participate in this
unique style of bringing families
together. “Dance and music feed
the soul,” he said. “It brings families
together. It teaches children to enjoy
life and believe in themselves and we
are here to nourish and instill those
needs.”
“Dance Therapy” Dance Your
Depression Away Inc. teaches dance
lessons, in Tango and Merengue,
designed to relieve stress, build
confidence, self-esteem and
teach healthy choices in life.
During the finals a special
award, The Lola Falana
Legacy Award – Community
Service/Dancing
Award,
was presented to Jasmine
Guerrero, from Cisneros ES.
“She epitomizes the
true meaning of the award. She
has demonstrated the value of
her character by supporting
and helping others,” said
Perez.
The award will be presented
annually, awarding a child the
distinction of going above and

a part of 32 years of graduations and
watched thousands of students cross
the stage.
I have witnessed the many
faces of Edgewood ISD. I’ve seen
the construction of new schools
and newly renovated facilities that
house our students in academic and
athletic programs. I have been a part
of ribbon cutting ceremonies and
celebrations throughout the district
and have shared those stories with
the community through The Historian.
I have enjoyed the triumphs
of many students as they received
recognition for academic and athletic
successes. And have seen many staff
and departments honored for their
achievements. I have celebrated state
recognized programs in education,
finance, and public relations.
Finally, I have been a part of
a team that has set no boundaries on
excellence. A team that has worked
diligently to create a positive image
for Edgewood ISD. An image that we
should all be proud of because we are
all a part of this community. A “World
Class Education” is an inspirational
theme for all. We need to believe that
this is what we want for all students.
We need to encourage students to
believe that this is what they want
for themselves. We must continue
to work as a team in educating the
leaders of tomorrow.
I thank our public relations
team of six - Roland Martinez, Marivel
Insall, Jason Gatell, Marvin Jimenez,
George Garnica, and myself for
creating the image that has inspired
other school districts to work on
recreating their own. And for placing
Edgewood on the Texas map at
the Texas School Public Relations
Association Conference by bringing
home 21 state awards, including six
Best in Category Gold medals and
numerous awards for the Edgewood
Historian. Edgewood is truly a unique
district.
In closing, I thank each
and every one of you I have been
privileged to meet and to work with. I
am proud to be an alumni and a staff
