EDGEWOOD INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
Graduates ready for future success!
Edgewood students to get free
backpacks, school supplies for
third consecutive year
The Edgewood ISD School Board
has approved the purchase of backpacks
and school supplies for students in
prekindergarten through 12th grade for the
2014-2015 school year from Educational
Products Inc. The Board approved the
initiative in May.
This is the third consecutive year the
Board has approved the free backpacks
and school supplies. The District’s
comprehensive
needs
assessment
indicates that current economic conditions
are prohibiting many families from being
able to purchase school supplies necessary
for academic success.
Velma Bendele, a parent at Loma
Park Elementary, has a 3rd grader and
5th grader. Bendele was pleased with the
decision to provide backpacks for students
next year. She said, “With all the expenses
involved in a new school year, it helps
save money so we can focus on clothing or
uniforms for our children.”
“My children are better prepared
in class because they have the tools they
need. I believe it helps a child emotionally
as well because they know they have the
proper school supplies.
This need and strategy is described
in the District Improvement Plan and is a
supplemental purchase.
Edgewood
Independent
School
District graduated over 500 students in early
June. Graduation for both high schools was
held at St. Mary’s University Greehey Arena
on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Family and friends
in attendance took part in one of the most
important events in the graduate’s lives.
The Memorial High School Minutemen
had a total of 239 eligible graduates cross the
stage. The Kennedy High School Rockets
had 274 students meeting the requirements
for graduation.
Edgewood ISD students have prepared
for higher education and for their futures.
Students crossed the stage determined and
career-minded as they leave their alma mater
behind and begin the next segment of their
lives. Whether the plan is for higher education,
a military career, or entering today’s workforce,
students have been educated to meet those
demanding challenges.
Memorial High School students
received $1,242,635 in scholarships this year.
Eighty-five percent of the graduates have

Message from the superintendent
Dear Edgewood ISD community!
Our 12,000 students and 1,800 employees
just completed the 2013-2014 school year and
preparations are well under way for the 2014-2015
academic year. The first day of class is Monday,
August 25.
Edgewood ISD ended the school year

most punctual elementary, middle school, and
high school students at the Excellence in Edgewood; we recognized
our longtime employees, teachers of the year, and retirees at Night
of Edgewood Stars; and we prepared our seniors from Kennedy
and Memorial high schools to venture into the world by pursuing a
college education, entering the military, or joining the workforce.
This summer, Edgewood ISD has opportunities exclusively
for EISD students. The District is offering summer enrichment
programs, acceleration programs, and sports camps. Many of these
programs have breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Edgewood ISD
students, and transportation is provided to most of the summer sites.
Registration is ongoing Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12
p.m. at Cisneros, Gardendale and Winston elementary schools; and
Kennedy and Memorial high schools. Don’t let your child miss out on
these great summer programs.
With the new school year on the horizon, you can look forward
to bigger and better things in Edgewood ISD.
Starting on the first day of class, all 6th grade students will
report to the 6th Grade Academy at the former Hoelscher Elementary
School building at 1602 W. Thompson Place, next to Brentwood
Middle School. The District will use a transitional design that helps
bridge students from the structure of elementary school to the
independence of middle school. This research-based concept will
use best practices in helping approximately 800 6th grade students
move from elementary to middle school. An informational video on
the 6th Grade Academy is on the District’s web site.
The District is implementing the Superintendent’s vision of
an elementary fine arts magnet program. Five of the elementary
schools will adopt a designated fine arts program in 2014-2015;
the other five elementaries will implement the fine arts magnet the
following year.
Edgewood ISD is bringing a full range of services that charter
and private schools, including those opening within Edgewood, do
not provide. If your child is not in Edgewood ISD, he or she is missing
out! Thank you.

What’s New for the fall
6th Grade Academy to open
Edgewood ISD is introducing the 6th Grade Academy starting
with the 2014-2015 school year.
All 6th grade students will be housed in the former Hoelscher
building, 1602 W. Thompson Place next to Brentwood Middle School.
Edgewood will use a transitional design that will help bridge students
from the structure of elementary school to the independence of middle
school.
The District held information meetings for parents of current
5th grade students in April. Meetings were held at all 10 elementary
schools allowing an opportunity for parents to ask questions of concern.
Parents were also shown a video about the program. The information
video that was shown at the meetings is currently on the District’s web
site. Parents can watch the video in the leisure of their home.
The 6th Grade Academy will offer technology in all content areas,
student-teacher teams, a transitional schedule, and project based
learning. In addition, students will have choices in electives, including
art, band, orchestra/mariachi, choir, and P.E.
There will be after-school clubs, including Police Athletic League
(PAL), chess, robotics, drill team, Anime (animation), and University
Interscholastic League activities.
Edgewood ISD will
provide transportation for
eligible students.
Students will return
to their attendance zone
assigned middle school for
7th and 8th grades.
For
questions
concerning the program,
parents can contact the
secondary
curriculum
department at 444-8102.

“A Night of Inspiration” welcomes opportunities for students
A “Night of Inspiration” was a dedication to the unveiling of the
new Steinway Concert Grand Model D Piano at the Edgewood Theatre
of Performing Arts. The evening was only one of many highlights in
this year’s spectacular events. Over 200 guests were in attendance
at the public event that featured musical performances by students as
well as invited guests. The main attraction was the unveiling of the
prestigious Steinway Concert Grand Model D Piano that will be housed
at the theatre.
Guests were treated to variety of musical pieces played by
featured musical artists Dr. Silvia Santinelli (piano) and Francisco
Fullana (violin). YOSA, Edgewood elementary students, performed
with Santinelli to various musical pieces. Kennedy band students
Julian Casarez played the saxophone and William Guzman played
the baritone, and performed musical solos. Memorial HS choir student
Samantha Moreno performed an opera piece of “Tu Lo Sai.”
The piano will be available during special performances by
students to gain an experience not readily available to students in other
school districts. The opportunities for students are endless. Dr. Silvia
Santinelli, world renowned pianist comments, “I believe that the inspiration
generated
in
students
will
render
limitless
possibilities and
immeasurable
benefits to their
music education.”
She adds, “In

experienced before, having a world class piano available will not only
attract excellent musicians and programs, but it will allow for much of
the student concerts to have live music accompaniment to their choir,
dance, theater, and solo performances.”
The evening was celebrated with students showcasing their
talents. The Memorial HS Culinary Arts program provided an array
of finger foods and apple cider while students provided musical
entertainment prior to the start of the program. Marisol Parra, a Loma
Park student, was honored as the winner of the name the Steinway
Piano Contest. Parra’s suggested name of “El Corazon de Edgewood”
was selected as the new name for the Steinway.
Santinelli commented on her own performance as, “I enjoy
playing most of the repertoire that I know just as equally. Lately I’ve
noticed that when I’m learning a new piece, the novelty of certain
passages or technical challenges make me look forward to enjoying it
for performance. Some of my favorite composers to play are Beethoven,
de Falla and Rachmaninoff.
The Edgewood Mariachi entertained guests following the
performances.
Elementary magnet program to begin
with 2014-2015 school year
The Board of Trustees approved the implementation of an
elementary fine arts magnet program for music and dance in five
elementary schools starting in 2014-2015.
The five campuses and the designated fine arts program are
Cisneros ES (choir), Henry B. Gonzalez ES (mariachi/ guitar), Las
Palmas ES (dance), Perales ES (piano), and Winston ES (orchestra).
The transfer process will be implemented for any student who
wants to participate in any of these programs. The remaining five
elementary schools will adopt a fine arts magnet program in 2015-2016.
Edgewood ISD’s new Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano,
which arrived in April, ties into the District’s vision of creating fine arts
magnet programs at the elementary schools.
Students will have an opportunity to experience the Steinway by
participating in music programs throughout the year.
The
Steinway
Model D will be housed in
the Edgewood Theatre of
Performing Arts and will
be available to students
through one of the music
programs.

Excellence in Edgewood recognizes
hundreds
The Edgewood School District held its annual Excellence in
Edgewood over four nights. The event honored elementary, middle
school, and high school students who received either all A’s or A’s and
B’s; those who had perfect attendance; those who displayed model
citizenship; and students who exhibit all of the above.
The principal from every campus had the opportunity to select
one student who represented himself/herself in the most positive light
and received the Edgewood Choice Award. Students represented the
epitome of what all students should strive to be.
Pictured below are groups of students with their awards on

young girl in dire need of shoes. The child and her siblings were living
with their grandmother who lived on a fixed income making it difficult
to provide for the children.
The officers were determined to provide some assistance to
the family. After leaving work that evening, both officers took it upon
themselves to purchase a pair of shoes for the girl. They returned the
next day to deliver two pair of shoes to the young girl.
The officers never mentioned to anyone about their act of
kindness to assist the family in need. It wasn’t until a concerned
community member notified the public relations department of the act
of kindness these officers had willingly provided without praise.
Edgewood ISD Police Officers have long been a huge part of
this community offering gifts to the families in need, especially during
the holidays. Many thanks to Officer Lilly Hernandez who was in
training (one month) after joining the Edgewood Police Department
and Officer Frank Guajardo for offering a gift of need from the heart.
