He went to school six days a week until he was 14. His passion and avocation was designing, building, riding and racing bicycles. The cycling club that he started is still in existence today. He married the love of his life, Caroline, and they had two children. Encouraged by a family member, the Cappelletti family embarked on a nine-day boat and three-day train trip to arrive in California. Florio spoke no English and was employed as a janitor in a nursing home. After purchasing his own home and creating a board and care facility, he then had Julia Convalescent Home built, and his family managed this “state-of-the-art” facility for years. After college, his son, John, became more involved in the business and saw the need for an “Independent Living” community. In 1975, they opened Redwood Villa Retirement Residence and the first residents moved in. We thank all of our extended family members who live here and help make Redwood Villa a great community. Merry Christmas from the Cappelletti family and staff Redwood Villa calendar is available online at www.redwoodvillamv.com 2 Snowman Trivia Adorned with a corncob pipe and a button nose, this frosty friend warmed the soul as a symbol of our youth. Some snowman trivia: It was the Dark Ages, not the Ice Age, when the first snowman was built, according to Bob Eckstein’s book “The History of the Snowman.” The world’s tallest snowman was just over 122 feet tall. It was constructed in Bethel, Maine, in March 2008. It didn’t completely melt for four months. Gene Autry’s rendition of “Frosty the Snowman” hit the airwaves in 1950. In the song, Frosty was a “jolly, happy soul.” Michael Keaton awakens as a snowman after dying in an auto accident in the 1998 film “Jack Frost.” The Abominable Snowman is a creature said by some to roam mountainous regions of Nepal and Tibet. Seven Healthy Travel Tips GET ACQUAINTED TEA COME AND WELCOME OUR NEWEST RESIDENTS EVERYONE WELCOME WEDNESDAY, DEC. 9 2 p.m. AT THE COFFEE BAR DELICIOUS TREATS AND CONVERSATIONS ««««««««««« Spending time with friends and family is one of the greatest joys of the holiday season, even if travel is required. Make a point to arrive in good health this holiday season so you can enjoy your visit! 1. Plan some downtime both during your trip and after your arrival to recharge and recuperate. 2. If your travel plans involve flying, pack your medications in your carry-on bag. 3. Get your flu shot. 4. Stick as closely as possible to your regular schedule for eating and taking your medications. Pack snacks if you’re not sure whether food will be available when needed. 5. Take movement breaks to keep your energy up and your blood moving. 6. Carry a card in your wallet that identifies your health conditions, the name and number of an emergency contact and the name and number of your primary care physician. 7. Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer. Cramped quarters (planes, trains and buses) are hotbeds for germs and viruses. 3 Flower of [December] [Narcissus] gggggg gggggggg Botanical name | Narcissus poeticus actaea .............................................................................. Fruitcake was outlawed in the 1800s in parts of Europe because it was “sinfully rich.” Based on an old English custom, wedding guests placed a slice of fruitcake under their pillows so they would dream about who they would marry. Thirteen percent of 1,000 adults in a research firm’s survey said they used gift fruitcakes as doorstops. Manitou Springs, Colo., has held its annual Fruitcake Toss the first Saturday of January since 1995. Mail-order fruitcakes were first delivered in the United States in 1913. How do you choose one organization among so many, though? Consider these aspects: Proximity. If you’d like to keep your charitable donation in our community, consider donating to the local United Way chapter. The United Way supports many different local organizations, and it has very strict requirements of the organizations it funds. You can be confident that your money is going to a well-organized charity that is focused on its mission. Trustworthiness. Check out your chosen charity. Sites such as www.CharityNavigator.org rank charities based on their financial health and their ability to support their missions over time. You can also investigate charities through the Better Business Bureau (www.BBB.org). Budget. If you’d like to help but don’t have money to contribute to a cause, remember that doing good for others doesn’t have to cost you a dime. Your time can be just as valuable. Many charities can always use an extra set of hands. If you don’t have the time to help, you can also log on to sites such as www.TheHungerSite.com. All you have to do is click a button, and the site’s sponsors donate money toward alleviating hunger. Similar sites support breast cancer research, rain forest preservation, children’s health, wildlife preservation and literacy.
