THE SCOOP VOLUME V, ISSUE 3 SPRING 2015 Spring-Ford 7th Grade Center Spring-Ford Area School District Top 10 Moments of 7th grade By Tim Amarant, Ian Cowie, Julia DiNolti, Sabrina Rohrer, Aly Sadowniczak, and Cameron Snyder 10: Lockers. This is the first year that we got to use lockers. It isn’t really a huge deal, but they are the hugest lockers in the school district. Points of Interest: 9: Candy Grams. In the month of December, a week before winter break, we had Candy Grams. The reason why it isn’t so high is because in total, almost everyone got somewhere between 1-3 grams. Team Reports Clubs School Events Music Groups Book and Movie reviews Technology info Photographs! Comics 8: iPod Wednesdays. It only happened three times this year, and we got to listen to music, AT SCHOOL! Also, in total many people forgot to bring in money, or they got in trouble. 7: Mermaid Lake. This was an extremely fun water park. I got to swim with my friends and we played all day. Yes, there was a little argument, but we got over it… eventually. 6: Busch Gardens [People in Band, Chorus, and Orchestra will get this]. Busch Gardens was an okay field trip. We played music, rode rides, and rode in a bus [Well that wasn’t really that interesting]. We left on May 8th at 6:30 am, and returned May 10th 1:15 am, Happy Mothers Day!!! We got to stay in a hotel, and we got to perform. Inside this issue: Team Reports 3, 6, 7, 8, 19 Music 8, 10, 11 Comics 14, 15, 22, 23 Events throughout Reviews 12, 13, 16 Features Science Fair 9 Trevor Project 11 Talent Show 17 50 Moments 20 5: Specials. Art, Tech Ed, FCS, and Music. For the first time in our lives, we had one of these specials for a marking period. Art was full of new forms of art like perspectives and shadings, Tech Ed. had modules like Animation and Flight Simulation. FCS was life skills including Sewing and ALMOST everyone’s favorite, cooking. Music had interesting forms of music, and WE GOT TO PLAY GUITAR!!! 4: Turkiest Teacher. The week before Thanksgiving Break, we had Turkiest Teacher. All the students voted for their favorite teacher, and Mr. D’Orazio won! He even made the front cover of the second paper. 3: The Amazing Journey. It was an event full of physical and mental challenges. In all, we had a lot of fun! 2: Dance. A close second was the dance. I thought that there was going to be more, but there was only one. It was 2 full hours of awesomeness!!! The only downside is that it got kinda boring. QUICK! 1: Newspaper. You non-scoop reporters were probably not aware of this. The best after school-activity was the newspaper, in my opinion. From 3 to 4, we got to write articles which we got to share to the WHOLE SCHOOL! I appreciate how you came up with ideas and followed through on your responsibilities. You did a wonderful job! Page 3 Celts Team Report By Ian Cowie and Julia DiNolti Math – Miss Amersbach and Ms. Zimmerman: In math, students are learning about probability. For example, did you know the difference between theoretical and experimental probability? You will learn about it in this lesson. You will also learn about the birthday paradox. If there are 23 people in a room, there is a 50% chance that 2 of them share the same birthday. As you can see, this lesson is all about the chance of an event occurring. If you want to learn more about this exciting unit, please refrain from skipping math class. Science - Mrs. Cody: This unit in science is all about genetics. Are you tall? Are you short? Do you have blond hair, or brown hair? You will find out why in this unit. Students are also completing and presenting their Genetic Disorder Projects. English – Mr. Ridgeway: In English, we have been vigorously working on a 200 point oral book report. Students had to pick an authoritative text that was over 150 pages, and create a five to seven minute presentation with two or more modalities to present to the class. Reading – Mr. Hollingsworth: In reading class, Celt students have been learning about poetry and the different elements of it. We’ve learned about figures of speech, sound devices, and symbolism. Social Studies – Mr. Young: Social studies students have been learning about ancient Rome and Greece. We recently did a project where we came up with a quote answering the question, ‘what is life?’ Soon we will be starting a thirty slide project on the ABCs of culture. END OF SCHOOL!!!!! By Grant Iannarelli and Ethan Nafus The end of the year is here, so go call your friends and jump in a pool. Before you go though, just remember that you need to turn in all assignments and pay attention! Just think that there is only a week left! We know it’s hard, we got the summer-bug too, but you got to do it. This is it, the home stretch!!!! Say it with us, “SUMMERTIME! SUMMERTIME!” You can do it!!!! Go have fun, see you next year ;)J. Page 4 Pictures of the Scoop Staff! Page 5 Page 6 Greekified! By Savannah O’Connor and Ethan Nafus Mrs. Glossner: In science class we learned about cloning, selective breeding, and genetic engineering. Also, we are learning about stem cells and their uses. Do you think cloning is a good idea? Have a debate with your friend! Mrs. Keyser: The lovely Mrs. Keyser put her students through a tough poetry lesson. That was followed by stations about onomatopoeias, hyperboles, idioms, similes, metaphors, and many other poetry skills. Mrs. Plush: The young authors have learned the ways of argumentative writing. The project took time and effort, but it was completed happily. Mrs. Plush was never happier to complete any other assignment. Now, the authors are writing a non-fiction book about a topic of their choosing. FUN! Mr. Reagan: The mathematicians finished their geometry unit(s). They are now learning about Probability and Statistics. He loves to school his students in Connect Four and other games. The algebra students are learning about polynomials, and for the students who do NOT know what they are, it contains several variables and algebraic expressions. Miss Seward: The Greeks are learning about their ancient selves and the Romans are learning about their archenemies. We learned how vicious the Spartans were and how tranquil the Athenians were. The students learned that many governments are not fun, such as a tyranny, where they were forced to rot in a dungeon. Roman Team Report - 3rd MP By McKinley Linn Mr. Butterweck- Mr. Butterweck has been helping Mrs. Erb teach their students all about ancient Greece. Using the SmartBoard to show his students videos, his students have been doing their best to stay on top of all of their work! Mrs. Erb- Mrs. Erb has been teaching her students all about ancient Greece and its kinds of government. Using lots of hands-on activities and note papers, her students have been busy memorizing and remembering everything they’ve learned in her and Mr. Butterweck’s lessons. Mrs. Fryer- Mrs. Fryer has been teaching her students everything there is to know about poetry! From figurative language to limericks, she and her students have been busy understanding and analyzing these literary works. Mr. Marcellus- Mr. Marcellus has been teaching his students about probability and ratios and tree diagrams and so much more! Using the random name generator to make groups of two for his students to work in, his students have been busy learning and practicing all of the material. Continued on Page 5 Page 7 Egyptian Update By Natasha Abramowicz, Laura Klabe, and Aly Sadowniczak Social Studies (Mrs. Custer)- We learned the different types of government in Ancient Greece by incorporating music, volunteers, crowns, and “Custer Cash”. We took the required social studies assessment and did a scavenger hunt about the Minoans and Myceneans. Science (Mr. Kahler)- We finished up our Genetic Disorders project with our partners, researching and presenting information about Phenylketonuria (PKU), Marfan Syndrome, Huntington’s Disease, Tay-Sachs Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, Down Syndrome, Hemophilia, and ALS. Algebra (Mrs. McCloskey)- We learned about factoring and foiling polynomials. We did a birthday paradox activity. The algebra final at the end of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10th. Math (Mrs.Zimmerman & Mrs.McCloskey)- We just finished learning about the surface area and volume of three dimensional shapes. We’ve just begun our lesson about probability and compound events. English (Mrs. Exeter & Mrs. Shortall)- We recently finished our argumentative essays on various subjects and argumentative anchor project ads. We also completed the argumentative common assessment. Reading (Ms.Fallstich & Mrs. Ward)- We completed our lesson on poetry analysis and our poetry analysis test on the poem, “Slam, Dunk, And Hook” by Yusef Komunyakaa. We also analyzed “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost and “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes. We just began our drama unit starting with the play, Pygmalion. Roman team continued Mr. Rendick- Mr. Rendick has been teaching his students about cloning and stem cells. While using numerous videos to explain these topics, his students have been busy taking notes and trying to contain all of this information! Miss West- Miss West has been working with her students on finishing their argumentative essays, and starting their common assessments. Using her SmartBoard to illustrate many of the techniques used, her classes have been busy writing down everything they need to finish their essays! Page 8 INCA ACTION III By Ethan Burnheimer, Derrick Le, Cameron Snyder, and Sam Thomas Algebra: After the Mid-Terms in January, we’ve been busy learning Chapter 7, Chapter 8, and Chapter 9. Though the polynomials we’ve been practicing are hard, Mrs. Bower spends a lot of time helping us work through them. Pre-Algebra: In Pre-Algebra we have been learning about 3-D figures plus compound shapes. We also learned the formulas to solving the volume and areas. Plus we went over the different angles and lines. Social Studies: For a class about ancient history, it is anything but ancient. We’ve learned about China, Mongolia, Assyria, and Greece. Social Studies is never old when Mr. D’Orazio is teaching the class! Reading: In Mrs. Rotondo’s class, we started to work on a packet full of reading skills. In the learning field, we were taught about figurative language. We had a day where we played Pictionary on idioms. Science: In Mrs. Croll’s class, we have been exploring the many uses for Punnett squares and the way they can show the way genes are tied to our appearance. We have also been doing many labs about genetics. Before we even learned about Punnet Squares, the whole entire Inca team did a genetic disorder project with another person. English: In Mr. Baldan’s class, we have been doing a lot of essays that involve research done on different subjects. Although we do lots of writing, many days Mr. Baldan puts music on playing from his laptop, and sometimes he has rap battles with students! Orchestra Update By Laura Klabe In orchestra, we have been working extremely hard to get ready for our Spring Concert, Spring Jamboree, and the Busch Gardens trip. For our concert, we are doing the following songs: Viola Country, Midnight Tango, Yesterday, (yes, the Beatles song) Incantation, Mythos, and maybe Final Countdown. (yes, it is in Pitch Perfect) The Spring Jamboree is at the 9th grade center and it will include 4-12th grade string players. The Busch Gardens trip includes strings, as well as band and chorus. We will be staying overnight in a hotel, play for competition, and spend a day in the park. Orchestra members have a lot of fun events to look forward to in the remaining portion of the year! Page 9 The 2015 Montgomery County Science Research Competition and Delaware Valley Science Fair By Jonathan Brull It was a dark and gloomy day on April 1st. All of the SpringFord middle school kids were nervous- all 8 of them - as they walked through the doors at Ursinus College. The team contained only two 7th graders - Ritvik Ramakrishnan and me. My project was on Magnetic Linear Acceleration and Ritvik’s was on Meiosis Happening in Gummy Bears. There were originally more 7th graders, but they all dropped out for either a very valid reason or just because they didn’t feel like doing all of the work. There were also six 8th graders. In the end, I earned second place in the Physics category and a special award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and an 8th grader named Robert earned an honorable mention. The first and second place winners in all of the categories moved on to the bigger Delaware Valley Science Fair. The Delaware Valley Science Fair had people that won science fairs from counties in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and even New England. This science fair included kids from 5-12th grade and over 900 competitors. There were only two Spring-Ford kids at this science fair: a 9th grader and me. I was the only one to win an award. I got an honorable mention in Physics and a special award from the US Metric Association. Although my project took a while to do, I had fun doing it and learned that all of the hard work paid off. If you like science and doing experiments, I would highly advise doing the science fair next year, as it can help with scientific analysis, communication skills and public speaking. Page 10 Spring Play By McKinley Linn The Spring Play has come and gone, but it was a big success! Tickets were three dollars at the door, and the people who came had a fantastic time. 7th and 8th grade students performed the play “Double Trouble” by Angela D. Stewart. It was about a scientist’s experiment that caused a big catastrophe, her disappearance! That was when some of her loyal friends had to find her fast, before the mayor and banker came and took the house! Not only did the cast have a great time, but also the directors! Miss Seward and Mrs. Custer have enjoyed directing this play, and certainly did a fantastic job. They provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to those in the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ stands for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning. The Trevor Project provides confidential phone, instant/text messaging crisis intervention services. This charity saves lives every single day. You can help in the efforts too! On their website (www.thetrevor project.org) you can donate to the project. You (or an adult) can volunteer on the website as well. Volunteers can make safe places for LGBTQ youth in crisis and promote The Trevor Project’s resources to those in need. The Trevor Project has many extremely useful resources for anyone in the LGBTQ community. The website has a lot of resources like “Coming Out as You” (a guide for those in the closet), the spectrum for gender identity and sexuality, The Trevor Lifeguard Workshop, and the warning signs of suicide (which we learned in health). Many people we all know and look up to are involved in The Trevor Project. Actors and actresses like Amy Poehler, Zac Efron, Jane Lynch, Neil Patrick Harris, and Daniel Radcliffe are all supporters. The music industry also has supporters such as Lady Gaga, Joe Jonas, Miley Cyrus, and Ke$ha. Another supporter is Ellen DeGeneres. A very involved supporter is YouTube celebrity, Tyler Oakley. Tyler has mentioned the Trevor Project in loads of his videos, and even made a full video about it. Jazz Band By Deepak Kejariwal Jazz Band is a fun, musical afterschool activity that practices on Tuesday and Thursdays afterschool. Mrs. Jennings is the director, and she is very musically talented. Jazz Band is comprised of both 7th and 8th graders. In March, which is Music in our Schools Month, our jazz band went to four different schools. There we competed with school districts in our area and had a blast. We visited Arcola on March 13, Boyertown on March 19, Kutztown on March 21, and Penndale on March 27. The judges at all of the schools rated us as excellent. These trips were memorable, and we will never forget them. Pierce Fights Gender Roles By Aly Sadowniczak 16 year old Vlogger and Singer, Ben J. Pierce aka KidPOV on YouTube and BENNY when it comes to his music, released his first single titled, “Little Game”. Through the lyrics and visuals in the music video, Ben shows how ridiculous and strict gender roles are and how we should be more easygoing when it comes to them. In the beginning of the video, girls and boys were separated and wearing their “correct color”. One of the kids from each gender start to become interested in things meant for the opposite gender and are immediately repressed by the other kids. As the video goes on, the boy and the girl shake hands with the gendered colored powder on their hands. Visuals of blue and pink dye being dropped in water and blue and pink paint mixing soon follow, representing the breaking of gender roles. Lyrics like, “Don't you think it's funny how they tell us how to live? Don't you think it's funny how we're all delinquent kids?” and “Hush boy, oh hush boy, don't say a word, Throw on a jersey and no one gets hurt, Hush girl, oh hush girl, just bat your eyes, Play our little game, play our little game,” shows how as we grow up we are taught that guys are supposed to be masculine and girls are supposed to act feminine and its bad to act the opposite. Another line, “You're raising suicidals with your predetermined titles,” represents how harsh people can be about gender roles that people (especially those who are transgender) are afraid to be who they feel they are and would rather die than live in fear or deal with the consequences that might follow. Through this video and song, Ben sends out an amazing message. People shouldn’t be made fun of or be punished if they happen to act like the other gender or like things that are usually meant for the other gender. You shouldn’t be afraid to be who you are and you shouldn’t be repressed because of it. Transgender/Agender/ Intersex etc. people should be respected and not be ignored. I feel this video is an eye-opener and I hope it changes your views on gender roles for the greater good. You can check the video out here, https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNr3x1kVVEc Amazing App For Social Networking Users Alike By Natasha Abramowicz Do you have Instagram, but want to make your posts into something more than just one photo? Well, then Pic Collage is the perfect app for you! With this app, you can take up to nine photos to put together into a colorful collage! You can also add colored text, backgrounds, stickers, and even videos from Youtube! After creating your collage, you can import it to various social networking websites including Facebook, Twitter, and of course, Instagram. I started using this app a little after I created my Instagram. So far, I find it convenient, and I personally enjoy it, and I’m sure plenty of people who don’t have it already will enjoy it too! So head onto the app store, download Pic Collage, and have a Party with your photos! Page 13 Cube World Game Review By Grant Iannarelli Cube world is a beta (unfinished, but is being tested) state, but is still very fun. This game is third-person and comes with a huge variety of features! One feature is races. With a total of eight races (and more to come) people can play as characters from humans to dwarves to even frog people! There are four total classes including- Mage, Warrior, Ranger and Rogue. They all have certain specialties and can only hold items for that class. There are six total biomes (and yet again, more to come), an extremely large number of animals, monsters, npcs, and bosses. There are some scary monsters too! If a skull bull catches you by surprise, WOW! it’s scary! More features include multiplayer. Unfortunately, Cube World can only have four players as a maximum, but the makers at Picroma™ are working on massively multiplayer servers. Many, many more great features are in this awesome game, and they extremely outweigh the amount of bad ones. I would highly recommend this game, even though the price is a little absurd for a game in alpha, if you get to play it enough, you won’t care about the price (especially if you’re playing with friends). More information can be found at picroma.com The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire: The World of Dan and Phil By Aly Sadowniczak Coming on October 8th 2015, “The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire: The World of Dan and Phil” by Dan Howell and Phil Lester will be released worldwide. After years of making awkward and entertaining videos on YouTube, Dan and Phil, aka danisnotonfire and AmazingPhil, have come together to create the most epic book ever. From stories from Phil’s teenage diary to never before heard easons Why Dan’s a Fail, “The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire” never fails to entertain. During your journey through the book, you learn how to draw the perfect cat whiskers, as worn in all the “Phil is not on fire” videos and get advice on dealing with awkward situations (They’ve had plenty experience in awkward moments, trust me). You can also find out which of their “dining chairs represents you emotionally”, as said in the book description. You get inside looks at their texts to each other, tales from when they met One Direction, and what actually happened to the Vegas Video. Along with the book, they will be going on a tour around the UK, and if people turn up to it, they will go around the world. Subscribe to Dan at https://www.youtube.com/user/danisnotonfire, subscribe to Phil at https:// www.youtube.com/user/amazingphil, and their gaming channel at https://www.youtube.com/ user/danandphilgames. The Amazing Book Is Not On Fire: The World of Dan and Phil will be exciting and very entertaining; I hope you will check it out! Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Imagine Dragons: Smoke + Mirrors By Aly Sadowniczak Imagine Dragons is an alternative rock band that kick started their career by releasing their first album, Night Visions in 2012. “Radioactive,” a song on the album, gained popularity in 2013 and other songs like, “Demons” and “On Top Of the World” got its fair share of fame later on. Now they are back, with their new album, Smoke + Mirrors. They released the song, “I Bet My Life”, as a single from Smoke + Mirrors on December 27th and it immediately got recognized, being bought on iTunes and featured in many commercials. Later on, two more singles from the album, “Gold” and “Shots”, were released. On February 17th, Smoke + Mirrors was released, allowing the 13 songs to be available to the public’s ears. Tracks on the album include (in order): “Shots”, “Gold”, “Smoke + Mirrors”, “I’m So Sorry”, “I Bet My Life”, “Polaroid”, “Friction”, “It Comes Back To You”, “Dream”, “Trouble”, “Summer”, “Hopeless Opus”, and “The Fall”. You can join them at the Wells Fargo Center on June 27th. The album is available for electronic sale on ITunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/smoke-+-mirrors/id950797707. Book Review: Steelheart By Sam Thomas Steelheart is a coming-of-age tale about a dystopian Chicago, called Newcago, ruled by mysterious super-humans called Epics. After a world-ending event, which they ominously called Calamity, cities all across the United States are being controlled by the Epics. Regular people are starting to get restless, forming rebel groups called Reckoners. David was a young child when Calamity happened, and has dreamt of joining the Reckoners, dedicating his life to studying Epics. Finally, David’s chance comes, but will it end in Steelheart killing another from David’s family, or will David finally get his revenge? Little Holidays By Savannah O’Connor Have you ever heard of Find a Rainbow Day? Or Chocolate Chip Day? If you haven’t then you are missing out on some great but little known holidays! Page 17 Talent Show By Mrs. Snelling On Thursday, May 21st, the audience in the ninth grade center auditorium was treated to a terrific evening of talent courtesy of our seventh and eighth grade performers. There were singers, comedians, a piano player, a string sextet, and a dancer. Miss Seward and Mrs. Muñoz did a great job of choosing a variety of acts. The hosts also did a fabulous job introducing the acts with jokes matched to the performance. If you missed the show this year, make sure you don’t miss it next year! 7th Grade Participants 8th Grade Participants Gia Rice (singing) Rebekah Eliot (singing w/ guitar) Tim Amarant and Ethan Amis (Comedy skit) Mikayla DeFrancesco (singing) Eric Gu (Piano) Carlos Paredes (singing) Olivia Hungate (Singing) Sydnee Sherrick (singing w/ guitar) Kaitlyn Weber, Peter Boretski, Robbie Dittmar, Patrick Gray, Brian Lynch & Devi Spletzer (strings) Kirsten Evans (dance) HOSTS: Nick Tufillaro, Harry Bastable,& Nick Elsner Alycia Laubert (singing) STAGE CREW: Ben Renner & Isabella Flowers Eric Gro on the piano Page 18 Phone Danger!! By Ethan Nafus Your phones are in danger! They are being taken from careless students who really want to check Snapchat, Instagram, Vine, and many other pointless things that can wait. If seen or heard, a teacher has the right to take it until the end of the day, if it is taken at the end of the day you will get it at the end of the next day. The second time, your parents have to pick your phone up in the office. When will the faculty take it away? Well, the Student Handbook page 70 says, “A PED that emits an audible signal, vibrates, is in ‘sleep mode,’ displays a message or otherwise summons interacts or in any way conveys a message to the device user or any other person at the users direction….A PED that is ‘turned off’ - such that is not activated and cannot self-activate and is stored out-of-sight in a container such as a back pack, book bag, locker, pocket, purse, vehicle, etc. shall not be deemed ‘in use.’” You are allowed to take your phone out once you exit the building, not when you are in the hallway leaving school. Keep that phone off so you don’t get it taken, this was all mentioned in the meeting with Mrs. Kotch. PSSA Challenge! By Sam Thomas In preparation of the PSSAs, multicolored papers have been given out, with review questions about Math and Reading on them. If we answered all the questions correctly and turned the paper in to one of the Student Government representatives, we would have the chance to win a $5 gift card to Wawa. Thanks to all the participation! Or have a small committee vote for you? Think about it. You have a voice. Shouldn’t you use it? Vote for you. Not, “Vote for this guy,” which would happen to be you. Meaning, “Oh we vote for you now. You can’t vote because only ours count. How would you feel? This survey polled 21 Spring-Ford students. 19 said everyone should vote. 1 said we should have a small committee. While 1 just didn’t know. Summing up the poll, it seems that most people said that everyone should have a right to vote. If most people at Spring-Ford said that everyone should vote, what if the survey polled more Spring-Ford students. What if the survey polled other schools? Would the number for the small committee increase, or would everyone still say that everyone should vote. Imagine. The United States of America said, “The states of Florida, California, Ohio, and Michigan, along with their residents, are allowed to vote for the next president.” What if you didn’t live in any of those states? You have been cut and have not been able to vote. How would you feel? How would you react? These are just some of the questions that should be answered. Unfortunately, the decision was made final. Now your votes don’t count. Before the actions of Susan B. Anthony, this is what it was like for women. Women couldn’t vote. Only men could vote. If a small committee did the voting, people not in the committee, would be like the new version of women. And all the manly men would DEFINITELY not like that! The poll has spoken. And the majority rules. Most people agree that everyone should vote. In conclusion, everyone should vote. Everyone has a voice, and everyone has the right to use it.
