As I’ve said before, the presence of these (and other) events is the price of being in a vibrant, lively city and the inconvenience we experience pales in comparison to what some Christians in other places face as they seek to gather for worship, so I try to keep that in perspective as I rise earlier than normal to avoid the barricaded streets. Thanks, too, to those who gathered on Sunday evening for our first of two listening and learning sessions, hosted by the Marriage Task Force. The goal of these gatherings isn’t necessarily to change anyone’s mind on a contentious issue, but to enable us to make room for each other, if we share differing points of view. The Task Force continues to invite input either by signed letter or by email ([email protected]) as they move through this time of discernment. One of the last things I did before graduating from Union was arrange a visit with Ben Lacy Rose, a retired professor of preaching and pastoral leadership and a legendary figure in the Presbyterian Church, who still lived in the Seminary neighborhood. A group of my colleagues and I spent an afternoon with him, talking about ministry, trying to glean from his wisdom. At some point, one of my friends asked Dr. Rose if he foresaw an “issue” that would bring division in the church. Dr. Rose thought for a moment and said, “There is really only one issue before the church and that is whether we are being faithful to our proclamation that Jesus Christ is Lord. All other issues are secondary to that, and have no business dividing the church.” I believed that then, and I believe it now. The church has always dealt with divisive matters, a cursory reading of the New Testament will make that clear, but the Apostle Paul stressed that the church’s unity is rooted in Christ, not in a uniformity of opinion, and he strove mightily to keep the church together. It was a worthy effort then, and it’s a worthy effort now. Contact Ginny Bunch via email at [email protected] with any questions. FPC Shares In the month of October we collected 171 cans of meat. Throughout the month of November, we will be concentrating on canned vegetables. As you shop for your Thanksgiving meals, please pick up a few extra items for our neighbors. And remember, we will have a special collection at the Thanksgiving Dinner on Tuesday, November 24, of food and financial donations to help support the 3 area food pantries with whom we partner; Catholic Parish Outreach, Urban Ministries and Wake Relief. We refer to these pantries, clients that we see through the Friendship Fund. By helping our clients spread their food dollars, they are better able to meet their utility and rent bills. Thank you for your continued faithfulness in this ministry to others. With each of us doing a little, we can accomplish a lot. PW Christmas Special Giving Project Everyone is invited to join FPC’s Presbyterian Women in their special giving projects for Christmas. Donations will benefit Healing Transitions, formerly known as The Healing Place for Men and Women of Wake County, which is a recovery and rehab center for homeless with drug or alcohol addiction, and the Pride for Parents Christmas Store, a project to provide low-income parents a way to purchase gifts for their children at an affordable price. For Healing Transitions we’ll collect items for the Santa Bags which will be put out Christmas Eve. Bring new unwrapped: gloves, socks, warm scarves, knitted hats, ink pens, or travel-sized toiletries. For the Pride for Parents Christmas Store we will collect new toys, bikes/helmets, books, and clothing for infants through teens. There is a special need for toys or electronic items suitable for teenagers. Donate money or gift cards and we will purchase items for the store. You may put your donation in the labeled bins in the lobby of the Edge building from November 9th –December 14th. Questions? Contact Terri Becom at 919-880-8499 or [email protected] Page 2 Our Annual Advent Festival is coming soon! Sunday, November 22, from 4-6:30 pm, we will have tables of crafts for ALL to enjoy! More information to come soon! Please mark your calendars, as there will be something for everyone of all ages, and we would love the whole church to come enjoy this start to the Advent season together! Anyone interested in hosting a craft table is welcome and encouraged to join in on the celebration! Please contact Katherine Peiper ([email protected]) with your interest and supply needs. It will be a wonderful evening as we gather together to begin the anticipation of Advent as one FPC family. Thank you! Help get new tables & chairs for Memorial Hall As a gift for our church’s bi-centennial, the PW want to replace the current tables and chairs in Memorial Hall. They are selling Christmas ornaments to help fund this project and invite you to consider the gift of a table and 8 chairs in honor or memory of a loved one. The cost of a complete set is $600. PW will be in the Edge Lobby or nearby in the Gathering Space each Sunday morning before Sunday School and after the 11:00 service selling the ornaments. Please consider this meaningful gift to your church family by purchasing an ornament, chair, table, or complete set. Presbyterian Women of New Hope Scholarship The current Presbyterian Women of New Hope Presbytery Budget provides for awarding 9 scholarships of $600 each. The purpose of each scholarship is to encourage and enable young men and women in financial need to pursue higher education. Applicants must live in the Presbytery of New Hope and be a member of a church in the Presbytery. The application form can be downloaded from the New Hope Presbytery website. The application should be mailed after January 1, 2016, and received by March 1, 2016. 2015, Issue 38 Kid’s Corner Contributions: BOLIVIAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND James & Dorothy Humphrey As we work to raise our children in the light and love of God despite the pressures of the world tugging at us to buy more, look different, do more, I am reminded of a Mr. Rogers song, sung regularly on his show. Let’s sing it, say it, chant it to our kids and ask them to repeat it to others, like the most popular song on the radio today. In doing so, perhaps we remind ourselves that this is God’s song to us. Blessings, Katherine It’s you I like, It’s not the things you wear, It’s not the way you do your hair– But it’s you I like The way you are right now, The way down deep inside you– Not the things that hide you, Not your toys– They’re just beside you. But it’s you I like– Every part of you, Your skin, your eyes, your feelings Whether old or new. I hope that you’ll remember Even when you’re feeling blue That it’s you I like, It’s you yourself, It’s you, it’s you I like. -Fred Rogers Page 3 FRIENDSHIP FUND Presbyterian Women Session In memory of John Ralph Stump, Oliver Banks’ brother-in -law by Jack, Susan, & John Davis In memory of George Kaloyannides by: Anonymous Sandra & Bill Baker Jeff & JJ Bulluck George & Carol Shackelford Circle #5 Bill & Barbara Williams Beth Wise In memory of Wanda King by Sandra & Bill Baker In memory of Lou Poole by Sandra & Bill Baker In memory of Jerry Young by Diane Young & her children HOPE FOR YEARS TO COME Darcy Dye Bowers Thaddeus Busby Jr. Ernest & Marilyn Jordan Bill & Barbara Williams In honor of Leon & Carolyn Cheek by Fred & Betty Crisp In honor of the children’s choir from anonymous In honor of Carl Hurley by Fred & Betty Crisp In honor of the volunteer with the children’s choir from anonymous In memory of Frances Allen, Sam Allen’s mother, by Fred & Betty Crisp In memory of Helen Ayers by Fred & Betty Crisp In memory of Frank Brooks by Fred & Betty Crisp In memory of Kathryn Burwell, Buck Burwell’s mother, by Fred & Betty Crisp In memory of Harold Harrison, Linda Armstrong’s father, by Fred & Betty Crisp In memory of George Kaloyannides by: Fred & Betty Crisp Bill & Karen Dunn Nancy Raynor MEALS ON WHEELS Presbyterian Women MOSQUITO NETTING Presbyterian Women PENNIES FOR HUNGER Presbyterian Women STEPHEN MINISTRY In memory of Keith and Ruth Lawson by their children, Margo Elder, Carol Moore, June Kelley, and Douglas Lawson THANK YOU To everyone who volunteered and participated in the PW BBQ Fundraiser.
