March April 2010
Volume 15 No.2
SPECIAL FESTIVAL EDITION
Welcome to the Folk & Bluegrass Festival #10
This year’s festival is one of our best. We have just the right mixture of folks who’ve been around awhile and those who
are relatively new to performing. For instance we all know who Dr. Elmo is, by his famous song “Grandma Got Run
Over By a Reindeer” though we’re not all familiar with his bluegrass leanings through his band “Wild Blue”
Kathy Kallick is another long-time SoCoFoSo favorite. She headlined one of our original Sonoma County Folk Festivals in 1999 and it’s certainly time to have her again on the Community Center Stage. This time, Kathy comes with a
newly assembled band fresh from rave reviews throughout the Bay Area. The word is a CD is coming at the end of April
but meanwhile, the live performance at this festival is our only chance to hear her great music in Sonoma County.
Another aural treat at this festival will be the singing of Rita Hosking accompanied by her band, Cousin Jack. Rita has
been a favorite performer on the North Coast of California. She was a head turner at the 2009 Kate Wolf Festival and
we’re excited to have her at our Festival this year.
Other performers we’re looking forward to hearing are the exciting bluegrass band 49 Special and a great cowboy
band “Lone Prairie”. Ed Neff, the King of Sonoma County Bluegrass, with his amazing band “Blue and Lonesome” will
return this year and Evo Bluestein will be here to provide an incredible, not to be missed, 2 hour workshop and performance in the Community Center’s youth Annex.
All in all, we’re looking forward to a great day of music and jamming and keeping this wonderful music alive.
We wish to gratefully thank Dr. David Fichman and Ron Blair for their generous donations to the festival!

49 Special
The word is getting around about 49 Special. Danny
Booth, Jim Chayka, Alisa Rose, and Tyson Alteri
have put together a sound that combines tradition
with freshness, and honors the first generation masters while clearly making a statement that they’ve
got something to bring to the genre themselves. All
the basic ingredients of good bluegrass are there. It’s
spontaneous, it’s intense, it’s simply joyful.
Dr. Elmo & Wild Blue
Marin County’s premier bluegrass band. The
quintet mixes bluegrass classics and originals with
folk and country songs, providing an entertaining
and energetic show for audiences of all ages.
All five of these guys are very talented musicians, and the
three-part harmonies forge a musical blend that captivates
and delights listeners. Their 2009 recording, “Wild Blue
Grass,” covers a range of material, from ballads and Beatles
to gospel and goofy songs, such as Elmo’s inimitable rendition of “The Wild Dogs of Kentucky.”
Having performed all over California for the past 19 years,
Wild Blue is a band that is fun to watch and who obviously
enjoys the music that they play.

Rita Hosking and Cousin
Jack
Kitchen tables, loggers, trailers, springs, loss, miners, culture clash, hope, forest fires—Rita Hosking’s show is about all that and more, and always
fierce and lovely. Her delivery is, to put it simply,
intense.
“Close harmonies and strong backup provided
by [Rita’s] band, Cousin Jack, round out a sound
rooted firmly in traditional music but distinct
to an artist with a particular lyrical love for the
mountains and the lives they envelop.” ( Eugene
Weekly.) Together, they make Rita Hosking and
Cousin Jack.
Lone Prairie
This fine band performs Vintage Western Music in
the style of the great groups of the Thirties and
Forties, such as the legendary Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry & Roy Rogers. Lone Prairie has
been featured at events throughout the west. They
have performed at many cowboy poetry and music
gatherings.
Page The Kathy Kallick Band
Blue & Lonesome
A traditional bluegrass band from Northern California playing in the style of the originators of the genre.
The five members of this band are evenly matched in
talent, influences and intent, having been exposed to
Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Bros. and
many other first generation players. Ed Neff, Mike
Wilhoyte, Jeff King, Larry Cohea and Paul Shelasky
remind one why they were drawn to bluegrass music
to begin with.Bluegrass music, being a specific art
form, demands certain structures, instruments and
delivery to be called Bluegrass. These guys have all
that and their individual creativity within that structure. A lifelong (so far) pursuit of these five players,
to uphold and respect the originators, is apparent in
the groove they attain, the energy they exhibit and
the quality they deliver. This is Bluegrass music.
“Kathy Kallick is a mountain gal at heart, an expressive singer and a profound songwriter. Her singing
has always been earthy and passionate. A troubadour
and exquisite storyteller, (her) arrangements are
tightly crafted, with each song given its own non-formulaic treatment.” —Joe Ross, BLUEGRASS NOW
Kathy Kallick has been leading bluegrass bands since
1975, releasing 14 albums. She received a Grammy and
two IBMA Awards for her part on “True Life Blues: The
Songs Of Bill Monroe,” and a CBA Honorary Lifetime
Membership. Kathy’s music is defined by her luminous
vocals, stellar rhythm guitar playing, celebrated original compositions – and great band. Tom Bekeny, Dan
Booth, Greg Booth, and Annie Staninec, are all inventive
and exciting players, distinctive and soulful singers, and
share with Kathy a joy in making and presenting bluegrass music.

Evo Bluestein
Fiddling, singing, clogging–at the same time! A banjo
concert, autoharp par excellence and a repertoire of
American folk songs that you will find fresh and authentic.
Multi-instrumentalist and singer Evo Bluestein brings to
his music a rich legacy of American folk tradition.
Considered one of this country’s most accomplished
Appalachian-style autoharpists, Bluestein is equally known
as a performer and teacher of oldtime fiddle, button accordion, guitar and banjo.
“Evo presents a great musical ‘experience.’ It is more than a
performance, more than educational, it is a terrific balance
of the two.” Scott Jacobs, Concord, CA
We’ll clear the chairs and do some clogging, square or
contra dances. Don’t know how? Don’t have a partner?
Fine! All ages welcome.
