U.S. POSTAGE PAID SEBASTOPOL CA PERMIT NO. 114 I The Little Red Hen Dining Room Remodel continues t has been another rewarding year for the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. We couldn’t be happier in our home at the Veterans Memorial Building. Community donations funded the remodel and redesign of the spaces for our many different activities. This investment and our long-term partnership with the County of Sonoma insures that this facility will be a center for all the arts for many years to come. We have recently raised additional funds to remodel two very import rooms within the Veterans Memorial Building: the Little Red Hen Dining Room and the Fireside Room. Many of you have probably been aware of these developments for the last couple years. However, these upgrades triggered the need for fire sprinklers throughout the building. The County of Sonoma and the City of Sebastopol have partnered to install a sprinkler and monitoring system that will allow us to continue with the improvements to the building. So this summer, you will see a lot of big machines and industrial activities to not only install these systems, but complete the work in the Little Red Hen. Although it may be slow, our work and process continues to raise the bar and make this center a place of pride for the entire community. Blue signs will lead the way to the open art studios throughout Sonoma County on the second & third weekends in October! Start your tour in the Galletta Gallery to preview the work of this year’s 174 participating artists. Studios are located throughout Sonoma County Petaluma to Healdsburg, and Sonoma to Bodega Bay. Use the Art Trails “Collector’s Guide” (available in the Gallery or online at www.SonomaCountyArtTrails) to plan your weekend visits. Sebastopol Center for the Arts 282 S. Oliver Ranch is home to 18 site-specific installations by Andy Goldsworthy, Ann Hamilton, Bruce Nauman, Judith Shea and other world-renowned artists. Nancy and Steve Oliver have been building this collection for over 25 years. They work closely with each of the artists, who become part family, part collaborators and and part idols. The tour length is 2-3 hours and it covers approximately 2.5 miles with 600 feet of up and down elevation change. It can be likened to a light hike in the woods as the paths are unpaved. The tour is not wheelchair accessible and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Discover art. Discover the artists. We are now plunged into the long days of summer while the globe’s other half welcomes long winter nights. Here summertime starts lush with color & formfilling landscaped garden spaces. Forest trilliums under the oaks have disappeared beneath the duff. Seniors and their parents left high school in the dust; younger kids are grinning from ear to ear. Most of my summer memories come from our garden. Nearly an acre of abundance: my grandparents had started the asparagus bed 30 years before. We sowed rows of sweet white corn, cuJean cumbers, squash, bell peppers, onions and potatoes … there McGlothlin was also a raspberry patch, sacred to my Mom & Grandmother. The four of us kids used to pick peppers, cukes, squash, melons and head for the horse pasture water wars. Object: throw the veggie bomb in the water trough and get someone else sopping wet. When you ran out of veggie bombs you had to retrieve them from the trough. Like a demolition derby, when the veggies were in shreds, no replacements could come in from the garden. Full This Page Program(5.5”x8.5”) summer on South High Street, our kids can choose from four Summer Arts Camps: Poetry & writing; visual, mixed media and functional art projects. Ghost Town to Havana, Friday 17 July is a fabulous story about little league baseball and a coach’s heart that knows no bounds. Keep checking the Quarterly. This is my last President’s message. It’s been an honor to lead our organization this past year and I am most appreciative of your commentary and ideas. Itamura July 14: Talk by master-printers Caren Catterall, Holly Downing and Rik Olson Thursday July 14, 2016 7-8 pm Brent Auditorium, Donation Requested Evening with master printmakers: Caren Catterall, Holly Downing and Rik Olson. Through July 24: “The Art of the Book” Juried by Betsy Davids, BA, MA, UC Berkeley and owner of Rebis Press in Berkeley. “The Art of the Book” is a show of 63 magnificent examples of book art created by local and international artists. This exhibition is a delight for all but especially for those passionate about the art that includes paper, words and books. Gallery II: An educational exhibition, an introduction to the main traditional forms or printmaking. Eric Johnson’s “Archetext” Best Of Show Discover the differences between intaglio, reliefprintmaking, planography and serography and a few unusual approaches to the art of printmaking. Enjoy work and working tools from established local printmakers, and work on loan from Calabi Gallery. Gallery III: a beautiful collection of recent work, “Linocut Prints”, by Robert Cormack. LOOKING BACK w[o]rdrobe is a solo installation of new three-dimensional, mixed media, book art and text-based works, created by C.K.Itamura, which serve as explorations of and commentaries on the psychology of fashion, fashion as industry, industry of oppression, and finding freedom. Each individual work in w[o]rdrobe reveals a contemplation, refection or revelation, and although the materials each piece is comprised of varies greatly – from traditional Japanese handmade paper and ink, to ready-made textiles and cut vinyl, to adhesives and conductor wire common denominators all the pieces in w[o]rdrobe share are the use of words, and pockets of memories shrouded in layers of meanings. An exhibition booklet, containing artist’s notes and photographs will accompany the exhibition. Copies of which will be available for sale at Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Gallery III: The Continual Effect of Abuse: Using Photography for Healing Gary Kaplan – Photography Stephanie Hamilton-Oravetz – Narrative This exhibition comes out of a unique project by photographer Gary Kaplan who worked with Stephanie HamiltonOravetz to create a series of portraits related to her history of sexual abuse in childhood. The portraits sensitively and artistically convey aspects of her experiences, and initially were created as part of Stephanie’s ongoing healing. However, in this exhibition, the combination of Gary’s portraits and Stephanie’s accompanying narrative also provides a unique and artistic bridge to understanding this difficult issue. This exhibition illustrates the power of the visual arts in healing from trauma. The message is positive and strong: While the effects of child abuse continues, the ability to heal continues, as well. Oct. 21 - Nov. 27 Galletta Gallery: Call for entries “Your Landscape?” “Spring into Nature” Bringing children into the gallery ranks highly in the mission of the Visual Arts at SCA. Exposure to original art is a privilege not granted to every child, especially nowadays as art education becomes scarcer in the schools. Three volunteers Natalie Boothe, Sally Briggs and Angela Z. Sturr from the SCA Visual Art Team were particularly interested in bringing forward an art installation of work by elementary schools. Their combined efforts resulted in a phenomenal exhibition of more than 700 pieces; vibrant, colorful, joyful… One could only smile when walking between the gourd-birds, the rainsticks, the sculptures of explorers and native American Indians, the sheep in a pen, the multitude of paintings and drawings of Sonoma County landscapes and their various animals. Not to forget the flags, the pillows and ceramic pieces of turtles and birds and bells. It was just awesome! A big thank you to all the children, the enthusiastic teachers and the support of generous donors: Alan Porter and Paul Hoge, Balletto Wineries, Village Art (Montgomery Village) and Caroline Fuller (Century 21, Sebastopol). We hope to be repeating this experience annually. French chanteuse, musette accordion, gypsy-jazz guitar, upright bass, and drum kit combine to revive the enchanting songs of that era. This music has retained its power to charm and transport listeners, and SonoMusette taps that nostalgia with artistry in both vocals and instrumentation. Inspired by the great performers of that era, such as Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, and Django Reinhardt, along with contemporary artists such as Zaz, SonoMusette brings bal-musette to the “moderne” era. Oct. 15: Stranger in Paradise, Alexander Borodin’s “Polovetsian Dances” Saturday Oct 15, 7:30pm, Sunday Oct. 16, 4pm $15 The Brothers Hazelrigg accompany the California Redwood Chorale(CRC) in the exotic music of Russian composer Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) whose themes from his opera, Prince Igor, were made famous in the 1953 musical “Kismet”. Singing fearured songs such as “Stranger in Paradise” is Bonnie Brooks. Although CRC will sing selections from other composers, the jewel of this concert will be our director and his brother on two grand pianos playing the original Borodin score as the CRC sings in Russian. Robert Hazelrigg - director, John Hazelrigg - accompanist. film arts Sebastopol’s “Best of the Fest” Brings Back SDFF Winners & Favorites The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival proudly presents its summertime encore presentations of festival favorites and award winners, dubbed “Best of the Fest”, on select Friday evenings from June to October, 2016 at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.
