We invite you to take a journey with us. A journey that reflects on the outcomes and
continued growth of a 162 year old tradition which continues today. A tradition of making
a difference in the lives of those who live, work, and play in central Kentucky.
Given the long history of youth development programs, a strong membership base,
extensive collaborations with local communities, and financial stability, the YMCA of
Central Kentucky makes an impact each and every day in support of our mission.
With the Y’s help, kids in neighborhoods across central Kentucky are more interested in
learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, kids learn their ABCs, to share with
others, about sportsmanship, building leadership skills and most importantly, they learn
how to be themselves. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged
adults tomorrow.
Because the Y is for everyone, we bring together children, adults, and families of all
abilities like no other organization can. As a result, thousands of individuals in central
Kentucky are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater
health and well-being for their spirit, mind, and body.
Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and public and private donors who give to the Y,
our community is stronger. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make
sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to
learn, grow, and thrive.
We look forward to the next chapter of this amazing journey with you as the Y continues
to strengthen the foundation of our community.

AMY’S STORY
I started the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
program in 2014 after having three cancer
surgeries. While into the program I got sick and
had to have another surgery. In May of 2014
I became so depressed and nothing seemed to
bring me out of the depression that I was in so
I thought about ending my life.
Then it came to me! I called the North YMCA
and talked to Dave and he told me to come
back to LIVESTRONG at the YMCA for a new
class.
So I had hope again. Praise God.
I started LIVESTRONG at the YMCA and the
leaders Bob and Marian have been so great and
caring. I feel like I have a reason to live again.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has saved my life
and I am so grateful.
Thank you Bob, Marian and thank you YMCA for

CARROLL & SUSAN’S
STORY
Twelve years ago we became members of the
Beaumont YMCA. Our son, daughter-in-law and
grandson were members and suggested that we join.
After visiting as their guests we agreed this would
be a good idea. Shortly after joining we realized
it was a great idea. Not only was the Y a terrific
facility with up-to-date equipment and competent,
friendly, caring personnel, it also provided an
opportunity to make new friends and renew old
friendships with folks we had known before and had
not seen for many years.
During the time of our membership, we have
participated in a number of activities and programs.
Walking, swimming, SilverSneakers®, yoga, pilates
as well as working out on much of the exercise
equipment has been enjoyable and beneficial. In
the fall of 2014, I was invited to participate in the
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program for cancer
survivors. The program is designed to help each
participant physically, mentally and spiritually. I was
the participant, and my wife was my cheerleader.
The trainers were outstanding and we benefited
greatly from their expertise and knowledge. They
exposed us to equipment and classes that aided us
in our lives as survivors. We participated in dance,
swimming, pilates, yoga, Zumba® and exercise ball
classes. Also included was a class on nutrition.
Through these experiences all survivors were given
a chance to identify with other survivors in their
quests to strengthen their bodies, find more joy in
life and expand their horizons. Being a part of this
program was great! Hopefully I will be able to apply
and share my learnings as we continue to enjoy and
participate as active Beaumont Y members.

attempted to try the aerobics classes, but that
also left me feeling over-whelmed and defeated.
Determined that I was not going to give up on my
desire to lose weight, I started a walking/jogging
routine while educating myself on nutrition and
exercise.
DANETTE’S STORY
My fitness journey began several years ago, when
I decided I wanted to make a change in my life.
I wanted to be fit and healthy. I was obese, I
weighed close to 220 lbs., wore a size 24 and I
had asthma. Simple things like walking up a flight
of stairs were a chore and asthma attacks and
frequent visits to doctors were normal for me.
In 2003, I decided to join my local gym. Upon
joining I was given two complimentary personal
training sessions and a personal trainer showed
me around the gym. I tried working out and was
over-whelmed by all of the fancy equipment. When
I would ask questions regarding the equipment
and how to use it, I would be given information
on expensive personal training packages instead
of being shown how to use the equipment. I
Losing weight was not an easy task for me. I realized
that it was not just about losing weight but about
making a lifestyle change. There were times when
I felt like giving up would be so much easier but
I was not going to allow myself to give up. My
perseverance paid off, as I have lost over 80 lbs.
since 2003, was able to fit into a size 6 and the
best part was my asthma no longer bothered me.
Having obtained my fitness goals, I wanted to help
others achieve their weight loss and fitness goals. I
wanted to use my past experiences to lessen their
struggle and decided to become a certified personal
trainer and group fitness instructor. My mission is
to enable one’s passion for healthy living through a
healthy lifestyle. After becoming a personal trainer
and group fitness instructor, I wanted to continue
educating myself in the endeavors of health and
fitness and became certified in Yoga and registered
with Yoga Alliance, the national yoga registry and
trained in Stott Pilates® mat and reformer.
I continue to challenge myself and set new goals,
and last spring I decided that I want to do a
triathlon. The only problem, which was a big
problem, was that I did not know how to swim. I
joined the North Lexington Family YMCA and enrolled
in an Adult Beginner Swim class. I quickly realized
that not only did I not know how to swim but that I
had a great fear of the water. The swim instructor
was very encouraging and I eventually gained enough
confidence to take individual swim lessons. It has
been a little over a year and I am working on my
free-style swimming stroke and have set a goal to
do a Sprint Triathlon in the Fall of 2015.
JACKSON FAMILY STORY
Anthony Sr. and I grew up very active. We both
played basketball and ran track throughout our
school years. When we started our family, we
really put physical fitness on the back burner
and focused on raising our children. We had
many discussions over the years about getting
in shape and leading healthier lifestyles but
never quite put our plan into action.
In January of 2014, we had planned a family
vacation for the upcoming summer. Getting
our “beach bodies” together was a priority. We
set goals and supported each other to meet
them. Without much thought we knew that the
YMCA facilities were for our family and were
perfect for meeting those goals. We needed the
Kids Corner for our three year old son, Aubrey.
We needed a variety of activities for our ten
year old son, AJ. We need a welcoming family
friendly atmosphere. Our needs are always met
at the Y.
To date, our boys have played basketball, flag
football, Pee Wee sports, & have taken swim
lessons to name a few. Anthony and I take
advantage of the Wellness Center and enjoy a
variety of classes.
Since our January ’14 goal was put in place, we
have not only lost weight, we’ve met our goals
and have found our home at the YMCA. The
Jackson Family Loves the YMCA, especially the
North location…so we ask Why not the Y??
dedication finally paid off and my son earned his
first degree black belt in December of 2013. Even
now, I get a little emotional thinking of the way he
grew and matured during those 5 years. Even when
he failed, he never gave up!
By this time, I was getting closer to being ready
to test for my black belt, too. My challenges
were different from my son’s. I was significantly
overweight and knew I would have to change that
in order to reach my full potential. Added to that,
I was fast approaching my fortieth birthday, and
didn’t want to spend my next decade in the same
physical condition in which I had spent my thirties.
A FAMILY’S SHAOLIN
STORY
My family has been active at the Y since 2003.
We’ve participated in a wide variety of programs and
have really enjoyed all the opportunities we’ve had
as our family has grown.
What I’d really like to focus on in this story, though,
is our participation in the Central Shaolin Martial
Arts program. All seven of us have taken martial
arts classes at one time or another over the past ten
years, and for me, it was the catalyst to a whole new
healthy lifestyle.
My oldest son began taking the Shaolin Kids class
in January of 2005, just after he turned five. He
was not the most coordinated of kids, but he loved
it, and it was a much better fit for him than team
sports (and still is!).
Over the years, each of my five kids would take the
kids’ class. My two daughters earned brown belts,
my middle son is working on his yellow belt, and my
youngest son has been in the kids’ class for a year.
In 2010, when my youngest son was a few months
old, it was finally my turn. I had taken pilates
classes and had done some cardio on and off over
the years, but mostly, I was pregnant or caring for
a herd of small children. My older daughter had
just turned eight and so we started taking the rank
progression classes together. We progressed as far
as third degree brown belt and then my daughter
decided she really wanted to play volleyball and
soccer instead.
In the meantime, my oldest son had progressed
to the rank of first degree brown belt. He wanted
to earn his black belt, but was having trouble. He
would often end up crying tears of frustration. We
began taking classes together and soon were taking
two classes per week, and then three, and practicing
an additional day each week. All that hard work and
In January of 2014, I started tracking my workouts
in order to earn a 100 Hour Club shirt. I first
started by spending 30 minutes on a recumbent
bike a few times per week in addition to my martial
arts classes. Soon, I added elliptical workouts, and
then started taking group exercise classes, where
I discovered a love of Zumba®. In February, the Y
had a contest where the person who worked out
the most days would win a prize. I exercised 27
out of 28 days. Since then, it has been rare for me
to miss a day. By the end of the year, I had logged
363.5 hours! In July, I signed up for the MobileFit®
program and had earned all the rewards within a few
months- the first person to do so!
July also brought a new life-changing activity. My
sister and I decided to do the Couch to 5K® running
program together. A month later, we ran in our
first 5K, the Midsummer Night’s Run. Our time
was 46:39. I caught the race bug and have run in
sixteen more races since then. At the end of March,
I ran in my first half marathon, Run the Bluegrass,
with a finishing time of 2:37:05, something which
would have been inconceivable a year ago. A week
later, I won first place in my age group at a small 5K
race, setting a new personal record of 30:33.
Throughout all of this, I had been working hard to
achieve my goal of earning my black belt. My son
and I attended classes twice per week and we came
and practiced every weekend. I found myself doing
things that had at first seemed impossible. My
cardiovascular endurance kept improving and soon
I found myself able to practice, without taking a
break, all ten of the forms I would need to test on.
On November 3, 2014, I tested and passed.
I would not by any means call this the end of my
story. I am still a work in progress! My younger
daughter has recently started running with me (and
will pass me up soon, I think!). I plan to run in five
more half marathons and many shorter races this
year, and I am working toward earning a 500 Mile
Club shirt. I am so grateful to the YMCA and to the
martial arts program for making such a difference
in my life and in the lives of my children and I look
forward to many happy, healthy years to come.

PEGGYS’ STORY
58, Executive Director, Rotary Club of Lexington
When Peggy moved to Central Kentucky 9 years
ago, a lot of things changed for her. She went
from living in a sleepy New York suburb to
moving into the heart of Downtown Lexington.
Peggy quickly became involved in the running
community and the High Street YMCA (where she
now serves as a board member). Working out on
a regular basis became a part of her routine and
helped build her confidence, circle of friends and
overall happiness.
Peggy says she loves to mix up her fitness
routine, and a perfect Saturday includes all the
fitness activities she loves. “You might think
I’m crazy, but I start with an early morning run
with friends and then a tennis game. I follow
that up with a bike ride out to Spindletop and
a dive in the pool for some lap swimming,” she
explains. “The hardest part is the bike ride back
downtown!” She enjoys a healthy diet and loves
snacking on nuts.
Peggy says that Rotary inspires her to be the
best she can be–in mind, body and spirit. She
is excited about Rotary’s commitment to Rotary
International’s End Polio Now, a program aimed
at helping to eradicate polio by 2018. Peggy is
also involved with the Bluegrass Auburn Alumni
Association and serves as Eucharistic Minister
at Christ Church Cathedral. She has two grown
children.
When encouraging others to get fit, Peggy says,
“It’s never too late to change! I started over with
a new town, job, friends and lifestyle at middle
age!”
