Letter From the Chairman and Executive Director
Dear Friend,
For the entire Southwest General family, 2013 has been a year of so many positive firsts. As you
may imagine there has been a great deal of excitement surrounding the growth of our new facility
as well as our continued and successful efforts both in the areas of patient care and in fundraising.
Listed below are just a few of the accomplishments we remain most proud of
in 2013:
� The largest gift in the history of Southwest General of $3 million dollars was generously made
by Dr. Vasu and Lisa Pandrangi and family to the Touch the Future capital campaign
� Successful implementation of the Foundation’s three-year strategic plan
� Largest corporate gifts in the Foundation’s history made on behalf of the Parker Hannifin
Corporation and the Jochum-Moll Foundation totaling $900,000
� Our most profitable golf outing to-date, which generated more than $97,000 in net proceeds
� Successful launch of the Foundation’s revamped website focusing on increased content and
ease of use
Many of these ambitious new initiatives have been, in large part, due to the generosity of friends
like you. Without the continued commitment of our volunteers, committee and board members,
donors and valued partners, we recognize that many of our accomplishments would not have
been possible to this extent.
We thank you again for all of your contributions to the Foundation. It’s the continued generosity
of our donors that play a large role in the success of these important achievements.

Southwest General’s MyHealth is a convenient new
online tool that allows patients to access portions
of their hospital-based medical record, anytime,
anywhere—for free. MyHealth can help individuals
quickly connect and communicate with the hospital to
see their Southwest General appointments, view lab
results, access medical records, share health records
with physicians, review discharge instructions, find a
physician and more. To learn more, visit

Additionally, Southwest General has
teamed up with University Hospitals to
offer Rainbow Pediatric Emergency Services
24 hours a day, seven days a week at the
hospital’s Main Campus Emergency Room
(ER) in Middleburg Heights and at the
Brunswick ER. Through this new service,
children receive emergency care designed
specifically for young patients in a familyfriendly, kid-focused environment—backed
by the full resources of University Hospitals
Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

In 2013, Southwest General collaborated with
University Hospitals to bring Southwest General
the award-winning services of University Hospitals
Neurological Institute (UH NI), University Hospitals
Connor Integrative Medicine Network and Rainbow
Pediatric Emergency Services.
The newly established UH NI at Southwest General
provides patients and community members with
direct access to treatment for stroke, spine surgery,
general neurology conditions and pain management
by physicians on Southwest General’s Medical Staff.
The University Hospitals Connor Integrative Medicine
Network—available at the Strongsville Medical
Center—offers services focused on preventing
and minimizing disease and promoting and
optimizing well-being. Services include acupuncture,
massotherapy, clinical hypnotherapy, myofascial
release therapy and life coaching.

Southwest General’s MyHealth
Emergency Services at Southwest General
Southwest General now offers InQuicker at its ER and
Urgicare Centers. The free service lets patients checkin online to receive a projected treatment time so that
they can wait in the comfort of home rather than in
the waiting room until it’s time to be seen. To learn

Southwest General earned national recognition
in 2013
� Southwest General was once again recognized
with an “A” grade when it comes to hospital safety
in the fall 2013 update to the Hospital Safety Score
report, administered by The Leapfrog Group.
� Southwest General received the American Heart
Association/American Stroke Association’s Get
With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality
Achievement Award and was recognized on the
Target: Stroke Honor Roll.

Michael Deucher, MD, has
been a distinguished member
of the Southwest General
Medical Staff for more than
12 years. A board-certified
cardiologist, Dr. Deucher has
served in many capacities and
roles since joining the Medical
Staff, such as a director of
Cardiac Rehabilitation; medical
director, Coronary Care Unit;
section chief, Cardiology;
and chairman, Department
of Medicine. In addition to
serving as a board member,
Dr. Deucher is the co-chair of
the Foundation’s annual golf
outing.

Mark’s footprint can be seen
throughout many aspects of the
communities served by Southwest
General. Mark was elected mayor
for three terms for the City of
Brook Park from 2001-2013. Mark,
along with his wife, Vicki, and
his children, Nicole and Corey,
are active community members
of Brook Park—a hospital taxing
district.
Brad Fischer has served as director
of Global Retail Operations for
Parker Hannifin Corporation for
the past nine years. Accompanying
his work at Parker Hannifin, Brad
serves as a board member for the
A Kid Again organization and as a
corporate committee member on
the Southwest Community Health
Foundation board of trustees.
Brad, his wife Beth, and his family
reside in Strongsville.
Brett Hazard
Brett Hazard joined the Southwest
Community Health Foundation
board of trustees with more than
19 years of experience successfully
planning and delivering supply
chain, IT and merger integration
capabilities and measurable
business benefits. Brett, a resident
of Olmsted Falls, currently serves
as the manager, Service and Repair
Strategy and Implementation
Team, for Sprint.
William H. Beyer
In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that the Southwest General
community marked the recent passing of
William H. Beyer, trustee, Southwest Community
Health Foundation.
William—also known as “Bill”—was a dedicated
member of the Southwest Community Health
Foundation board of trustees for more than 28 years.
During his time, Bill served in many leadership roles,
including treasurer of the board for more than 15
years, chairman of the Annual Appeal Committee as
well as member of the Nominating and Governance
Committee.
Through Bill’s efforts, the Southwest Community
Health Foundation’s Annual Appeal campaign
has flourished for more than 25 years. His pivotal
involvement in establishing this project helped to
generate funds to bring community residents many
health care benefits such as the TomoTherapy
Hi-Art® treatment system for radiation oncology, a
Residential Hospice facility and more.

Bill, and his wife, Joan, were long-time residents of Berea and Bill was a proud graduate of Baldwin
Wallace University. As members of the community, they understood the importance of supporting the
institutions that provide critical support to their residents. In addition to his many years of service as
a board of trustee member, Bill and Joan have provided continued financial support to the Southwest
Community Health Foundation. Their generous gifts over the years have placed them among the
distinguished Lifetime Benefactor Giving Circle.
“Bill took great pride in his work, and was extremely passionate about all that we do here at the
hospital for our patients,” notes Bobbie Simmerman, executive director, Southwest Community Health
Foundation. “This could be seen in
everything he did. And, although
he was soft spoken, Bill remained
powerful and genuine in every
action he made. It was my honor and
privilege to work beside Bill for the
past few years, and we remain so
grateful for his years of service.”
Bill’s commitment, perseverance
and quiet, but mighty voice, are
just a few of the reasons why he
was recently awarded Southwest
General’s prestigious Mighty
Oak Award. We encourage all to
remember Bill’s outstanding legacy
each and every day.

The valued support from these dedicated

finance and Foundation operations. We are
grateful for their significant investment of
time, talent and treasure to the Foundation.
Dedicated Volunteers
The volunteers of the Southwest Community Health
Foundation continue to serve as a vital component of
our efforts. We are fortunate to have so many dedicated
individuals that serve on our various boards and
committees as well as on special events and in our offices.
In 2013, more than 1,500 collective hours were donated
by our volunteers that helped us to raise more than
$4.9 million in total attainment — a record amount in
the history of the Foundation.

The Southwest Community Health Foundation continues to place great importance upon a
healthy financial bottom line. Our overall total attainment in 2013 reached more than $4.9
million thanks to the successful efforts of the Touch the Future capital campaign, Annual
Appeal, Golf Outing, Grateful Patient program and other fundraising initiatives.
Community Benefit
In order to provide the best health and wellness services possible, Southwest General offers
many free services to our community residents. Some of these critical initiatives include:
Geriatric Assessment/Elder Evaluation Program, Van Transportation, Emergency Medical
Services (EMS), Community Nurse Program, the Neighborhood Care Center and more.

Capital Campaign At-A-Glance
The Touch the Future capital campaign experienced a pivotal year in 2013. During this campaign period we are proud
to report that more than $4.1 million was raised through gifts and pledges in support of the Building for Your Future
expansion project. Some highlights below include:
� Informational sessions, mock-up tours and hard hat tours for the new Emergency Room and patient rooms to 26
different groups throughout the community
� A formal celebration and cultivation event honoring the Pandrangi family for their generous gift to the campaign
� Successful implementation of a staff and volunteer campaign raising more than $268,000
� Beam signing and topping-off ceremony in June, which installed the final signed beams to the new building. The
beams were signed by donors, patients and hospital leaders
� Achieved 100 percent participation from the Foundation board of trustees as well as active financial support from all
Foundation committees, hospital leadership, staff and governing boards

campaign Steering Committee worked tirelessly
to move forward the efforts of the Touch the

In 2013, the Southwest Community Health Foundation
celebrated the largest gift in Southwest General’s history
from Dr. Vasu and Lisa Pandrangi and family. The milestone
gift of $3 million was dedicated to the Touch the Future
capital campaign in support of the hospital’s Building for
Your Future expansion project. In recognition of their
generosity, the new private 96 patient bed tower, slated to
open in Oct. 2014, will be named the “Pandrangi Tower.”
We cannot thank Dr. Pandrangi and his family enough for
this extraordinary and transformative gift. The Pandrangis’
contribution to the Touch the Future capital campaign
has set a new bar for future giving and will leave a lasting
legacy at Southwest General.

allows exceptional caregivers to be recognized through gifts made in
their honor.

recognition by their supervisors, a card from the hospital president and
CEO and recognition in hospital publications. If you don’t know the name

Sprague Haven
As we look back at the year in review,
we are reminded that Southwest
General’s spirit of philanthropy has
been alive and well for nearly 100 years.
In 1918, a group of committed Berea
residents raised $100,000 in only 10
days to build a much-needed 32-bed
hospital. During the five years it took
to build this new facility, patients were
cared for in the former home of the
generous Milton Sprague—also known
as Sprague Haven.
As a member of the Sprague Haven Society, you, too, have the chance to create a legacy through
giving. There are several ways that you can make a lasting impact on future generations of Southwest
General patients, they include:
� Creating a multi-year giving plan to the Foundation
� Including Southwest General as a beneficiary in your will or estate plans
� Establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity
� Adding Southwest General as a recipient to your insurance policy
Consult with your financial planner or attorney to discuss how-to include Southwest General in your
