District 6880 June 2015 2014-2015 Leadership Team Linda Mong District Governor Michael Chambers District Governor Elect Barry Cavan District Governor Nominee Bob Callahan iPDG Paul St. Onge AG Coordinator Jan McDonald District Secretary Bob Mills District Treasurer Eric Lewis Dist. Comm. Officer Joe Saloom Vice Governor Robert Greer District Rotary Foundation Rotary Review A Letter from Governor Linda. . . I can hardly believe that my term as Governor of District 6880 is coming to a close. Putting the “P” in front of my “DG” ends one chapter of my life and begins another. I have met so many wonderful Rotarians through my visits and seen so many of you Light Up Rotary with your acts of service and volunteering. You have shown “Service Above Self” to me so many times and in so many ways. Thank you for welcoming me into your clubs, for your encouragement, your assistance and your prayers as I embarked on my journey as DG. Now, I ask that each of you “BE a GIFT to the World” and to our new DG, Michael Chambers. He and his leadership team have a great new year planned for District 6880. The Rotary International Convention in Sao Paul, Brazil, was amazing. Dave and I had quite an adventure getting there but once we arrive we explored the sights and sounds of the city. We met new Rotarians and had an opportunity to connect with old friends. If you haven’t attended a Rotary International Convention, put it on your bucket list! The speakers are fantastic and you’ll have lots of fun. You’ll see Rotarians in their native cultural dress and have opportunities to learn about new projects for your club. While there, I took the opportunity to become a lifetime member of the Fellowship of Beer Drinking Rotarians. Naturally, I had to pay equal homage and become a lifetime member of the Fellowship of Wine Drinking Rotarians! A personal highlight was being on hand for John Germ to be officially named as RI President 2016-17. While in Sao Paulo, Dave and I were able to be of service to several other Rotarians. One couple from Oregon found their credit cards wouldn’t work. Although they’d left a travel notice, neither their cards nor cell phone worked. Luckily, we had some Brazilian Real to share as well as a phone that could call the US to help with the credit cards. Continued on Page 2 Governor Linda’s Letter Continued. . . The best thing about serving as District Governor is the opportunity to recognize the achievements of others. During my last few days serving as DG, I was honored to present two awards: It was a pleasure to present PDG Tom Mann with a Citation for Meritorious Service. The Citation, presented by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, recognizes Rotarians who have actively demonstrated outstanding service to The Rotary Foundation for more than one year. While each of the 535 Rotary districts is allowed to nominate one Rotarian, a mere 100 Citations for Meritorious Service are presented each year. Tom is only the 13th recipient to receive this award from District 6880. Congratulations Tom!!! Richard Bollinger, Tom Mann, DG Linda It was an equal pleasure to present our Newsletter Editor, Katherine Rogers Hughes with a Paul Harris Fellowship. A non-Rotarian, Kathy has worked tirelessly to produce our monthly newsletter including photos and fun information about the clubs and activities in our district. Congratulations Kathy!!!! Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your District Governor. Oh, what a year! Linda DG Linda is right, oh what a year it has been. I was made an honorary member of the Daphne/Spanish Fort Rotary Club AND a Paul Harris Fellow. I am truly blessed. Thanks to each of you who contributed stories, pictures, flyers, etc. to the Rotary Review Newsletter. Without you, there would be no news for the newsletter. Please keep sending news to me at [email protected] I will be continuing as editor under incoming DG Michael Chambers. Please remember to update your dacDB information for new officers and send pictures of your new leadership. Thank you, DG Linda, for being not only a great governor, but a wonderful friend. Thanks for all the great memories! Wise The Luverne Rotary Club hosted the 23rd Lawson Richards Fishing Rodeo, Thursday, April 16, for the 6th Grade Honor Students in Crenshaw County. This Rodeo was named after Mr. Richards, the long- time Representative of the Zebco Company who promoted this Rodeo, along with Hick’s Inc. and Rotary. This fishing Rodeo was started on May 20, 1982, and has continued each year. The Luverne Rotary Club purchases catfish and with the assistance of the Crenshaw County Lake, Hick’s Inc. and other supporters, the Rodeo is off to another opportunity to fish and fellowship. The Honor Students are outfitted with rods, reels, line, floats, stringers and catfish bait. Rotarians assist all the students in casting and helping to get the catfish off the hooks, etc. Some of these students have never been fishing, so this is an exciting time for them and some students come experienced and ready to fish. Luverne Rotary Club was started in 1949 and has continued the legacy of “Service Above Self” through promoting business ethics, supporting handicapped children, supplying toys for Christmas, Library projects, Interact (Rotary for High School Students), eradication of Polio World Wide and many other local projects. The Luverne Rotary Club hosted the annual Golf Tournament Fund Raiser on May 13, 2015. We raised approximately $3000.00. Rotary President, John Wise, Jr. and Golf Committee Chairman, and Rotary Treasurer, Danny Rolling welcomed the thirty six golfers and explained the fun rules for the day. The Old Barn Restaurant in Goshen, Alabama catered the food for the day. It was a fun filled day for everyone. Prizes were awarded and fellowship was enjoyed by all who participated. In addition to the Honor’s Day Fishing Rodeo, The Luverne Rotary Club hosted the 6th Annual Special Needs Fishing Rodeo on Friday, the 17th. Mr. Henry Edwards, Chairman, along with Mr. Jack Jones, Mr. Danny Rolling, and Mrs. Pat Folmar, coordinated with Teresa Smith, a special education teacher at Luverne High School, to arrange for approximately 20 special needs students from Brantley, Highland Home, and Luverne to spend a fun filled day catching catfish. Several parents came to help assist with their children along with 20 plus Interact students from Crenshaw Christian Academy. The students had a wonderful time making memories of the “one that got way” fishing but more importantly, made life-long friends and memories with the CCA Interact students. These selfless Interact students worked tirelessly helping to reel in the “big one,” putting smelly bait on hooks, and stringing up all the fish the children caught. Laughter and good times were had by all that attended. “Thank You Rotary and Interact!” is the message that was asked to be shared by all the special needs students from all 3 schools. Also a special thanks to Hicks Inc. for providing all the fishing supplies, bait, tackle, Club News Jackson High Interact To celebrate "World Environmental Day" members of the Jackson Interact Club cleaned up the "Rotary Mile" on Hwy 43. Bill Hopper and Earl Ingram hosted the Troy Rotary Club meeting for June 9th. They invited Matt Clower to provide an update about the Internet and social media. This is the second year that Matt has spoken to club members about how best to use the various on-line media. He also attended Troy Rotary meetings in past years as a reporter for the Messenger. As expected with technology today there has been lots of changes beyond the more common platforms or sites. Social media should be the cornerstone for any prudent businesses or public service organization. Facebook remains the largest social media platform by far with 71 percent of adult Internet users. Instagram is one of the big surprises in 2014. Twitter, although widely recognized and talked-about, only attracts young, college educated and somewhat affluent folks. Linked In is the second largest social network behind Facebook. Pinterest is growing but overwhelmingly female followers. Matt outlined how to get started with social media and what the content should be. He stated that social media should be a dialog. Pictured above are Bill Hopper, Matt Clower, and Earl Ingram. Club News Troy Con’t Lee Hicks & Tom Hicks hosted the Troy Rotary Meeting for June 2nd. They invited Dr. Donnella Carter, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of the Pike County School System. Dr. Carter spoke about the new education programs in the Pike County schools. After a successful and busy year the motto for next year is “DO MORE.” Thirteen students were awarded college graduate degrees in business and finance this year. Through existing and new academes the number is expected to increases in the coming years . This is an opportunity for high school students to obtain college credit at no or little additional cost to parents. In addition to the business and finance academe students will be able to obtain college credit in agricultural science, aviation, and performing arts next year. Dr. Carter is expecting as many as ninety in these programs next year. Another major educational effort is the virtual high school. This pro- gram provides credit recovery, skills training, and accelerated learning. Plans are to bring all of the academe programs under the virtual high school system. Efforts are being made to introduce students to the academe programs as early as the fifth grade. Pre-K units are coming online in two of the three elementary schools. Dr. Carter stated that it is a welcome challenge to keep up with all of these advancements.
