Willard Duane Knudson was born June 1, 1934 at
Rolla, ND to Henry and Elen (Mathiason) Knudson.
He was raised and educated at Rolla. Willard entered
the United States Army on May 26, 1954 at Ft. Lewis,
MO and served 18 months in Germany. He was honorably discharged May 4, 1956 at Ft. Sheridan, IL.
He received the National Defense Service Medal,
Army of Occupation Medal, and Good Conduct
Medal. After his military service he was united in
marriage to Louise Michels on January 5, 1958. The
couple made their home first in Bisbee, ND, then Tioga, ND where Willard
worked for the local Lumber Yard until it was discontinued. Willard then
went to work for Koch Service, as a truck driver from 1985 through 1998.
After his retirement the couple moved to Lake Metigoshe where they built a
beautiful retirement home on the lake. For health reasons and to be closer to
family Willard and Louise returned to Tioga, ND in 2007. Willard worked as
a carpenter for the majority of his life. This was his passion and he took a lot
of pride in his work. He especially loved the detail in finish carpentry. He
loved helping his children with all of their remodeling projects.
Willard loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He
seemed to have a sense of balance in hard work and enjoying life. Camping,
teaching his children how to water ski, fishing and just spending time together around the campfire telling stories were special times. After he retired
and lived at the Lake, one of his favorite things to do was go on long pontoon
rides with the love of his life, Louise.
Willard was a gentle and caring man who loved his family and friends.

God looked around his garden
And he found an empty place
He then looked down upon his earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest
God’s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills are hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered “Peace be Thine”
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
