Athletic Competitions for Childhood Cancer Survivors Moscow - May, 30th – June, 3rd 2012 “Internal scars caused by suffering are much deeper than traces from injections and surgeries. These children have already won the main battle; they have survived. Now they need help to return to their childhood, to learn to enjoy their lives, and to embrace the fact that they were ill. Such athletic events give these children an opportunity to show themselves and others what they are capable of.” The founders of the Gift of Life Foundation Russian actresses Chulpan Khamatova and Dina Korzun • The treatment of oncology diseases treatment is long and painful. • Restoring a high quality of life after treatment requires a lot of time and effort. • Children are often labeled handicapped and experience difficulties due to their limited physical abilities. • Athletic competitions allow children affected by oncology to gain self-esteem and the feeling of equality. • These athletic events will encourage children in treatment and empower them as they struggle with the disease. I finished in second place, but I didn’t feel upset because my mom told me I was great. After that we had a drawing contest and I won the first prize. I got a huge pile of presents!!! I’m so happy!!!!!!!
