Nurses are the backbone of health care In the doctor’s office, the hospital, or in the home, often the first face that people see when seeking out health care and treatment is that of a nurse. Nurses are vital to the health and wellness of Canadians, and work hard with patients and in the community to promote healthy personal choices. In fact, this year's theme for National Nursing Week, May 8 to 14, is Nursing: Promoting Healthy Choices for Healthy Living. In 2004, nurses numbered above 260,000, the largest group of health care professionals in Canada. This number has increased by about 3% since 2000, meaning there’s about one nurse per every 129 people. Another increase is seen in the number of registered nurses that are employed in their field - about 93% - up by 6% from 2000. This is good news when compared to earlier statistics, which predicted a significant shortfall of registered nurses in the workforce by 2011. This increase can be attributed, in part, to efforts made by the Canadian Nurses Association to monitor statistics and promote training in the field of nursing. Noting that nurses are the “backbone of the health care system”, the association works with the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing to keep track of how many graduates will be joining the workforce, how many have additional qualifications, and information about educational programs in Canada. The CNA also stays on top of new research and technology in the field of health care, and encourages nurses to update their skills and knowledge so they can provide the best care possible to Canadians. Recently, the need to include genetics in nursing education has been seen as a way for nurses to make a valuable contribution to health and patient care. An emerging field, genetics has been embraced by nursing systems in the US and UK for the past several years, by incorporating genetics and genetics training to give nurses the necessary credentials to work in this field. Nurses are the undisputed front line workers of our healthcare system.
