R
ichard and Lisa Menkel and their son Michael Franklin
are the artisans that make up Against the Grain: RLM
Designs. This is their first appearance at Shaker Woods.
Together, they turn domestic and exotic hardwoods into
functional pieces of art. The jewelry boxes they create are
the culmination of hours of hard work and lots of love.
Twenty-seven years ago, Richard made a little wooden
duck for a neighbor. She loved it and he was asked to
make another one. The next thing he knew, neighbors,
friends, coworkers and strangers started asking him
if he could build them something. While doing this, he
discovered a passion for woodworking and the process
involved in crafting it into various things. He began making
small household items for local craft shows and fell in love
with building and selling wood crafts.
About six years ago, Richard met Lisa while taking
classes for a master’s degrees. They became friends and
got to know each other outside the classroom. When Lisa
found out about his woodworking, she offered to help.
While she hadn’t done any woodworking before, she was
excited to learn a new skill and was a quick learner.
Soon afterward Lisa’s oldest son Michael (though he
prefers to be called Franklin) asked Richard to help him
build a wedding gift. Michael didn’t have experience with
power tools or woodworking, so Richard showed him
some techniques and tools to use. Michael was a natural
and loved working on the gift so much that Richard asked
him to help with the shop. And the rest is history.

well together. So well
in fact that I asked Lisa
to marry me,” Richard
said. The couple married
in November 2015 and
work in the garage
behind the house where
they live in Washington, Pa.
This trio is a great team. Each has a particular set of
skills and brings something unique to the shop. Richard
has an eye for rough cut lumber. With a well-trained eye,
he sees the potential for beauty by matching grain patterns
and colors. Michael has only been cutting on a band saw
for a few years, but is very creative and as quick a learner
as his mother. Lisa hand sands and stains all the pieces
bringing out the natural beauty and colors of the various
woods.
The boxes aren’t just beautiful to look at; they’re useful
pieces to store precious or even daily used items such
as rings, watches, necklaces, cuff links, glasses, keys,
keepsakes and collectibles. You can see examples of their
work on Facebook, but for a truly breathtaking experience

E
stablished more than three decades ago, the Shaker Woods Festival has long
been considered one of the premier craft events in the country. With this type of
reputation, it would be easy to sit back and rest on our laurels.
But, we’re not going to do that. Instead, we continue to look for ways to improve the
“Simple Life” experience. So, here’s what we’ve been doing to prepare for another
successful festival:
• Expanded and adjusted handicap parking with easier access to the woods;
• Built new craft booths;
• Added new menu selections;
• Doubled the number of picnic tables and benches; and
• Increased the amount of portable restrooms.
Don’t miss out on this year’s outstanding line-up of skilled crafters, talented musicians
and exceptional concessionaires situated in a magical wooded setting. It’s Shaker Woods
Festival time.

as gifts. Owner Kara Hohn is a stay-at-home mom, or a work from home mom,
depending on whom you ask. She’s
inspired by such designers and
retailers as Lilly Pulitzer, Matilda Jane,
Gymboree, Pottery Barn and Vera
Bradley.
Every item is handmade from fabrics
and materials that Kara “obsessively”
selects.
Moms,
grandmothers,
caregivers and gift-givers will find

Appealing. As a young mother, Kara
learned she could make better baby
care items than what was sold in
traditional retailers. Her business
started small; it was born from
discussions with moms about what
would help them care for their children.

T
wenty years ago, Sam Bard and Kevin Moat were professional ice skaters for
Holiday on Ice. Today, they’re successful entrepreneurs in Clyde, Ohio.
Sam and Kevin started Botanically Built 15 years ago literally from the ground
up. Culling from their six acre farm,
they make rustic twig furniture and
dried floral decorations. They create
the furniture from sticks and use the
end bits for wreaths. Their inventory
includes small chairs, benches, love
seats, wreaths, swags and more.
“First, we used all kinds of wood to
make our furniture,” Sam said. “But
our customers really like the curly
willow, so we started planting curly
willow trees on our farm.”
He added, “In our local area,
everyone comes to us when they need
a floral arrangement.” Items come in
different sizes, shapes, designs and
prices and can be delivered to funeral
homes, hung on walls, for display
purposes or as decorations. The
average twig wreath, for example, is 24 to 36 inches,
while larger ones are up to 5-foot by 6-foot.
The full-time farm florists enjoy making custom
pieces for special occasions and gifts. The duo
encourage customers to provide their own materials.
One customer brought in an antique ironing board,
which Sam and Kevin beautifully decorated with silver
flowers for a bridal shower. A gift for a farmer, on the
other hand, included wheat.
Their flower garden is so large that they regularly
sell excess inventory to local florists. Sam and Kevin

It’s “Crunchy Leaves
Festival” Time
B
orn and raised in Coraopolis, Pa.,
Amber Fuentes currently resides in
Denver, NC. She enjoys spending time
with her husband, daughter and their
dogs, as well as yard saling and antique
shopping. Amber works in the veterinary
field when she’s not creating stories of
enchantment. By combining descriptive
details with valuable lessons, her stories
are engaging for all ages.
“I like to write stories where it prompts
us to look beneath the surface of what’s
in front of us,” Amber said. “I like to make
the reader think, what if this was true?
How fantastic would that be?”

Crunchy Leaves Festival approaching.
With summer giving way to fall, autumn’s
majestic change provides the perfect
setting as the crunchy leaves begin to drift
slowly from the trees and onto the ground.
Shaker Woods is actually the setting
Amber used as the backdrop, thanks to
her many visits to the festival!
But the festival isn’t just special for
the people of this small town; it’s also
special for the animals that call this forest
their home. Despite the daunting task of
stocking up for the winter, the animals can
hardly contain their excitement as they
prepare for their own Crunchy Leaves
Festival.
However, amid the excitement one little
squirrel, Sophie, finds herself sad and
lonely. Not feeling as pretty as the other
squirrels, Sophie believes her tail isn’t as
bushy, shiny and full as the others and that
her big, falling down glasses alienate her
from the group.
Fortunately, an owl named Sir Frederick
James notices Sophie’s distress and
swoops down to help, giving her a magic
acorn to help her realize how important
she is.
Amber Fuentes’ vivid imagery and rich
illustrations place readers so deep into the
middle of the festival, they can almost feel
the leaves crunching beneath their feet.
“I want to make the reader feel like
they’re part of the book,” Amber said. “I
want them to be able to relate to not only
the character, but also different elements
of the story. I want them to understand
and appreciate the importance of selfworth and kindness. Perhaps you relate
to Sophie or maybe you’ll seize the
opportunity and make a difference like Sir
Frederick James; either way we all can
relate in some way.”

arryl grew up in Beaver Falls, PA where he began singing with his brother
Don at an early age. The duo went on to great success in Nashville,
recording two albums with Sony/Epic Records and were nominated for
Country Music Duo of the Year for five consecutive years. They performed on
the Grand Ole Opry eleven times and performed with such legends as Merle
Haggard, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Alabama, the Mandrells and many
more. They even managed to score a Billboard Top 40 hit with their single ‘No
Sir’ and have three videos in the TNN Hall of Fame. Darryl has been a singer/
songwriter/entertainer his whole life, focusing on his live shows the past ten
years and mesmerizes every crowd.
Andrea grew up in Marion, OH and earned a Bachelor of Music degree
from Ashland University where she majored in music education with a vocal
emphasis. Her voice has taken her to stages across the country and even
overseas to England with her ability to sing six languages and all styles
of music, from opera to Broadway to hip-hop to classics and everything in
between. She earned the Best Classical Talent award at Miss Ohio and was
featured on Fox Sports Net for her performances of the National Anthem at
Columbus Blue Jackets NHL games.
Together, the two have combined their dynamic voices and diverse musical
backgrounds to create an exciting live show like none other. The duo can be
seen all over Ohio, Midwest and South, performing over 150 dates a year.

Shaker Recipe
Spiced Apple Pudding
• 3/4 cup butter
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon allspice
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
• 4 medium chopped apples,
peeled, cored and chopped
Cream butter and sugar in mixing bowl until light. Beat in egg. Sift together all the dry ingredients.
Stir into creamed mixture. Stir in apples. Turn into greased oblong pudding pan. Bake in 375° F. oven
for 30 minutes. Serve with heavy cream flavored with maple syrup or vanilla. Serves 4-6.

Silver “Wear”
W
hen Bob Schriever, of Cincinnati, Ohio, retired from his job as a high school
math teacher, he looked for a creative hobby he and his wife Joan could enjoy
together.
Bob remembered one of his former students worked his way through college making
jewelry and enjoyed it so much he became a jeweler. He also recalled Navy buddies
during World War II who made jewelry for their girlfriends from silver tableware.
The idea fascinated him and he began experimenting making bracelets from spoon
handles. Bob cut away the spoon end and bent the handles this way and that until
he had a pleasing shape. Then, he added a jump ring, a clasp and a small trademark
[charm] to the bracelet.
“He has an artistic gift that lay dormant all those years,” his wife said. “He never tires
of working with the silverware and he’s constantly experimenting with new ideas.”
Bob found the tines of salad forks make beautiful earrings and he could turn an oyster
fork into a custom ring. Spoon bowls had endless possibilities. Joan and their friends
who received gifts were the first models and encouraged him to continue.
“Many people ask where we get the silverware - all silver plate,” Joan said. “Is it safe
to invite you to dinner, they ask me?”
Actually, Bob’s artistic endeavor
requires Joan’s savvy shopping:
“Bob says I have a knack for choosing
the right patterns at auctions, flea
markets and secondhand stores.
Every silver pattern isn’t a winner.”
Joan admits she made some
mistakes in the beginning. Her 15year experience as Bob’s material
buyer, quality control person and
jewelry consultant at craft shows
makes it possible for her to advise
customers who want them to turn
family heirlooms into jewelry.

rowing up in a family where food
and cooking were a way of life,
Pat Chrystal always felt right at home
in the kitchen. He enjoyed cooking for
family and friends so much that he and a
partner renovated and opened the Open
Hearth Grill on Youngstown’s west side.
Customers not only enjoyed the meals
but also Pat’s camaraderie and humor.
Pat’s passion for cooking didn’t go
unnoticed by his son Patrick. Patrick
helped out in the kitchen at the Open
Hearth Grill while in high school, then
attended Johnson & Wales University
in Providence, R.I., where he earned
bachelor’s degrees in culinary arts and
hospitality and event management.
Patrick trained on the east coast
throughout Providence and Newport, as
well as in Marlboro, Mass, then returned
to Youngstown to pursue his dream of
owning a restaurant “back home.”
Patrick, his parents Pat and Sandy,
and his sister Shawn were all involved
in Patrick’s Chophouse at Lock 24 in
Lisbon.
Patrick created a recipe for stuffed
Hungarian hot peppers that he and his
Dad began making for friends, Irish
conventions and golf outings. The hot
pepper sandwiches were so well liked
that people began hinting the duo should
take them on the road! Sadly, Patrick
passed away in 2007.
In honor of Patrick’s memory, Pat built
a food trailer and “Patty McPeppers
and his Irish Tenders” was born. Menu
items consisting of stuffed hot Hungarian
peppers, barbecued pork tenderloin,
Guinness brat sandwiches and Rueben
rolls were a hit with the customers he
and his brother, Pete, served at various
special events.
Some years later, Pat and Pete met
a man who imported brick pizza ovens
from Italy. From that chance meeting,
Pete’s-A-Place was born. Pat designed
and built the trailer that houses their
pizza oven from the ground up. After
much experimenting, they’re now known
for some of the best pizzas in Ohio.
What started as a hobby and love of
stuffed hot peppers has evolved into
being part of the Shaker Woods Festival
family. Pat and Pete couldn’t be more
excited!

become very successful in the last few years.
A native Ohioan, Sam earned a bachelor of arts
degree in floral design and greenhouse management
from Ohio State University and previously worked at
a greenhouse. Kevin is from Northern England.
Having exhibited at other craft shows, they’re
excited to be at Shaker Woods for the first time this

t is her commanding presence and captivating stage
personality along with her dynamic and versatile voice
that has made Vanessa Campagna a fan favorite. These
traits along with her passion to perform have earned her
the opportunity to work with some of the most successful
entertainers in the music industry and at many of the most
prestigious music venues across the country. It is her
diversity, yet vocal purity that earned her the respect of
world-renowned multi-award winning, director/composer,
Marvin Hamlisch; who claimed, “Vanessa is the real deal”.
She was both honored and humbled when he asked
her to join him for a variety of shows with the National,
Buffalo Philharmonic, and Pittsburgh Symphonies. The
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said after one of her shows, “…
the blossoming star power and whopping voice of young
Vanessa Campagna shined brightly” and in the words
of the Buffalo News, “Vanessa is a precociously gifted
vocal powerhouse and a mature singer reminiscent of a
young Celine Dion.”
She was only 10 years old when she was chosen out of
24,000 youngsters to appear on CBS’ Star Search. Since
then, she has shared the stage with some of the greatest
artists in the music industry such as Reba, Sugarland,
Trace Adkins, Blake Shelton, Alan Jackson, Brooks &
Dunn, Loretta Lynn, Keith Urban and more. In Vanessa’s
eyes, dreams are meant to come true! Her passion for

I would like to extend to you an invitation to join us at the
2016 Shaker Woods Festival. My products are unique in the
Arts and Craft business because I feature wood products
each incorporating Hand Sculpted artwork. My pieces are all
original designs that utilize a marble sculpting compound, hand
detailing and time intensive antiquing process, which in turn
gives them a very rich, old world appearance.
As an added benefit to all of my customers, I finish all
the pieces for either indoor or outdoor display and actively
copyright each one to assure you that you will not find
anything like them anywhere else. Please stop by for our
regular demonstrations and experience works of art that are
pleasing to behold and a joy to own and collect. Thank You
“Last year, acquaintances asked us
to make jewelry they received in the
mail from their grandparents in East
Germany. Over a period of time, they
received some of the packages that
were sent, but some were lost and
they didn’t have a complete set,” Joan
said. “There wasn’t enough to use as
tableware, but they were thrilled we
were able to make enough jewelry
that everyone in the family could have
mementoes to share.”
Although all jewelry they display at
Shaker Woods is made of silver-plated
tableware, many of their custom orders are made from a family’s sterling silver.
“Sterling silver is so expensive that we couldn’t afford to buy it and try to resell
it as jewelry. However, sterling silver tableware makes beautiful jewelry,” she said.
Bob makes rings and bracelets in several sizes, and at Shaker Woods, Joan
takes the time to make sure each piece fits the buyer, saying, “You may find people
crowded around our booth because buying our jewelry is very much one-on-one.
We want each person to be perfectly satisfied. When you craft because you love to
do it, hearing firsthand how people enjoy our jewelry adds to our pleasure.”
It’s been 17 years since the Schriever’s made their first appearance at Shaker
Woods. While the product line has changed during the 30-plus years Silver “Wear”
has been in business, the quality of its service and workmanship is still the “best!”

Kara’s first creation was a thick bib, custom made
for her niece who drooled day and night. Then, next
in her line, were bibs large enough to cover her own
toddler and be fastened with a snap so he couldn’t pull
off the bib.
Early on at a local farmer’s market, a few customers
requested aprons and Kara soon realized that aprons
were becoming popular again (and that she loved
picking the coordinating fabrics.)
Her business has grown steadily in the past eight
years. One of the best compliments she received was
that the toddler bibs have washed and worn so well
that satisfied customers are handing them down to
new moms. One customer said, “The bibs still look so
nice even after several years!” All bibs, burp cloths and
toddler bibs are backed in soft absorbent chenille.
Sew Appealing also works with two bakeries that
wear (and wash) her aprons daily. The employees love
how beautiful the aprons look many months later!
This is Sew Appealing’s first year at the Shaker
Woods Festival. Kara grew up in Butler, Pa., then lived
in Medina, Ohio for eight years, where Sew Appealing
began. It was a big

indsay Jean-Marie Adam is a
fashion designer and textile artist
from Akron, Ohio. After graduating from
the University of Akron with a bachelor
of fine arts in fashion merchandising
degree in 2003, she started designing
her own knitwear collection for women
and young girls.
Working from a home studio, Lindsay
develops her own patterns. Among them
is her signature flip sweater, for which
she’s known throughout the U.S.
Two different looks from one sweater
Lindsay spent five years perfecting
this unique and versatile type of sweater.
“It’s great for all climates because of the
open stitch,” she said. “Simply wear the
sweater long or flip upside down and
wear short. The short look can also
provides a hood. You get two sweaters
in one!”
Along with hundreds of sweaters
to choose from, this wearable art
fashion designer also creates gorgeous
ponchos, gloves, scarves, shawls and
vests. Plus, she designs and hammers
metal pins to hold the scarves in place. Working eight or more hours a day six
days a week, she takes great pride in
her open weave style and loves sharing
her expertise combining different
textiles. Examples include a faux fur
yarn with a soft plush cotton blend and
a silk bamboo yarn along with a bumpy
chenille yarn. “My sweaters have an
unusual flare to them with a tailored
scoop back accenting the beauty of a

t’s been 38 years since Maria Pistiolas made her
first rag doll for her then four-year-old daughter
Nikki. That little rag doll with a white eyelet apron
and red hair turned into a family business called
Little Friends Cloth Dolls.
Maria was born and raised in Ambridge, Pa.,
where her mother taught her how to hand sew at a
young age. Her dad was a barber and his customers
would leave newspapers behind, which Maria used
to make patterns. Later, when married and living in
Brunswick, Ohio, she inherited her mom’s antique
treadle sewing machine.
Maria taught Nikki and son Michael how to sew
and stuff body parts. She gave most of her early
creations to family, friends and charities to raise
funds for children and abused women. She recalls
being told, “Those little dolls of yours make me
smile.”
In 1980, a local show promoter convinced Maria
to sell her dolls at a show and to her surprise all of
them sold! The fourth bedroom of her home became
the official sewing room. A newer and faster sewing
machine was purchased. Husband George built
shelves for storage. And she started collecting
fabric, lace and buttons, baskets for the dolls to hold,
along with small bears, rabbits and cats for the dolls
to carry, and anything that might make each doll
unique.
When traveling, Maria found new treasures for the
dolls, including colorful fabrics, vintage children’s
books, hats, American flags, antique jewelry and
different color yarns for hair.
No two of the whimsical folk art rag dolls are the
same. The range in size from 12 to 36 inches and
have a raggedy or little girl’s face. Different color
yarns and threads are used for hair.
Customers often give Maria cherished “hankies”
handed down from a grandmother or a keepsake
piece of jewelry to create dolls in memory of loved
ones or for gifts.
In 1993, Little Friends Cloth Dolls became part of
the Shaker Woods family. During those three glorious
weekends, Maria sold every doll she made. She
promised Sue Ferguson she’d be better prepared
the following year for her new customers.
Maria says most of the dolls are purchased by
ladies who love collecting and decorating or to give

She believes in encouraging
women to express themselves
and strives for sophistication
and elegance with her colorful
creations, which come in
black, grey, off-white, tan,
taupe and white to name just
a few.
Lindsay exhibits at shows
throughout the U.S. and
is excited to be at Shaker
Woods, booth 162, for the first
time. She welcomes custom
orders, saying, “I strive in
giving each customer a oneof-a-kind experience.”

utler, Pa. native Ken Tynan is excited to be at Shaker Woods for the first time.
The former billboard painter turned chainsaw artist will create three to four
carvings each day of the show. To determine what to carve, he often asks kids
what they want to see.
Ken first witnessed chainsaw carving at the Iowa State Fair 16 years ago. While
living in Iowa, he took a carving class, participated in a competition and beat the
teacher. “I just got it. It made sense to me. I call it the art of subtraction. I went nuts
with it,” he said. “I never looked back.”
Since then, he’s returned to Butler, become a multiple award-winner on the
international carving competition circuit and was featured on the Canadian reality
television series “Saw Dogs.”
Today, this self-employed chainsaw carver works 40 hours a week, producing
one creation after another, most of them large. “Each one makes me better,” he
said.
Ken’s sculptures include superheroes, animals and faces, for which he’s best
known. That’s no doubt due to the years he spent painting faces of realtors and
lawyers on billboards. His keen eye for faces is exemplified in his lifelike artwork.
His preferred wood is white pine because it
stands up better, although he’s currently working
with a metal sculptor to combine both materials.

Cranberry Township, Pa.

to start a website. In 2014, her
son Michael helped design www.
littlefriendsdolls.com. Thanks to the
website, Maria has formed many
friendships throughout the U.S.
Today, Maria designs dolls for
every holiday, season and show.
She welcomes special requests.
“It’s been a great journey and as
long as my hands can keep sewing,
I’ll continue,” Maria said. “I now
have two granddaughters, and of
course they have my handmade
dolls. Evgenia, our five- year-old granddaughter, has claimed the sewing room as
her favorite place in our home where she plays with unfinished and finished dolls,
helping me decide what necklace this one should wear or whether the dolly should
hold on tight to a teddy bear.” Maria will be at booth 50 at this year’s show.
