Painting Career Spins Off From
Children’s Art Therapy Class
R
obert Bishop was quite happy with his chosen
vocation as a professional child and youth
therapist. He worked at a Windsor, Ontario, hospital
where he leaned heavily on art therapy to inspire the
children to find their hidden inner strength.
“If you asked me who inspired me to move from
art therapy into a career as a painter, the first person
who comes to mind is Kathy, a nurse who worked at
the therapy center,” Robert says. “She would often
elbow me as she passed my station and say, ‘aren’t
you doing anything else with your art talent?’”

may have spoken to
his supervisor who then
asked him if he could do a
painting for him. He knew I
couldn’t resist a challenge.
A month later, the artist
took the man a picture and
the supervisor encouraged
him to do another one.
“I think you can do better,’
my supervisor said to me
and when I brought him the
second version, he asked
me which one I liked better.
I knew he was encouraging
me and shortly after that
a bunch of my coworkers
convinced me to paint
murals on the walls for
Christmas. The kids loved
them and it made the area
more kid friendly.”

He might have continued painting as a therapy tool and a
vocation, but he had always had back pain that doctors said
might one day require surgery. One day while he was working
with the children, his back went into a spasm and he couldn’t
walk. He couldn’t keep up with the children who were running
through the woods. One child noticed he had fallen and came
back to get help for him.
“I knew I couldn’t continue to be responsible for the children
and I didn’t want surgery at that point in my life. My wife, Patty,
agreed with me that God was leading us to take a leap of faith
into painting full-time. It seemed an unlikely career choice
since I’m color blind, but Patty has a remarkable capacity for
adjusting my color palette.”
His work is so realistic, you will feel like you’re experiencing
his sunsets or walking on the beaches he paints. The pet
paintings that are one of his specialties inspire viewers to want
to reach out and touch them.

f you go out to the Woods this summer, you’re sure of a big surprise…Shaker
Woods that is….where Lori Cline will be surrounded with wooden bears and a
variety of other uniquely designed, cut out, put together and painted collectibles
made especially for the Shaker Woods Festival.
You may wonder why Lori features bears as a focal point in her Cabin Cellar Craft
booth.
“The Cline family are hunters,” Lori says. “We live in a rural area where bears may
choose to take up residence. Our two sons, Jesse and Nate, learned to hunt as early
as the law allowed and in fact they have a hunting show on DirectTV called “Tree
Stand Buddys Game On” that airs every week.”
She speaks with obvious pride of her sons’ accomplishments and her pleasure in
having a craft that everyone in the family can enjoy.
“We were really happy when our daughter, Holly, and her family decided they
wanted to live here on the farm, too. My husband, Doyle’s family has lived here for
generations and I think my woodcraft has helped me fit in like a native.”
Twenty-nine years ago, she began to sell her woodwork through home parties. As
well as things friends could buy and take with them, she took special orders for family
and holiday occasions. She remembers a mother asking her to design and build a
clothes rack for her son’s room to fit his interest as a weight lifter. She doesn’t know
if the rack inspired him to pick up his clothes, but other mother’s ordered similar teen
incentives.

The Children’s Order - 2012
Celebrating Our 20th Year of Schooling/Craft Classes
O

Schoolhouse will be open for classes
during the three-weekend festival. Our school,
now in its 20th year, is run in the tradition
of the shaker community and known as the
“Children’s Order“. Classes were first held in
1992 and entitled “The Children’s Order.” This
was the term used by the Shaker Villages to
denote their schooling system.
All classes are related to the craft that the
teacher exhibits at the festival. Classes will be one and one-half hours and you may safely
leave your child in the schoolroom while you shop. The teacher will be sure that your child is
monitored until you return.
Classes are held at the Shaker Schoolhouse and last approximately 45 minutes to one hour.
During that time parents are free to shop unless otherwise noted below by the instructor. Each
teacher has determined the age range for their project. The fee for each class is $10.00 and
covers all supplies needed. Please stop by the schoolhouse early in the day to register your
child for the class of his/her choice.

rookfield, Ohio - Ruth and Carl Jennings opened their Alcraft Egg Artistry shop
in 1971. Their 200-acre farm wasn’t too far off the beaten track and before long
customers were making their way to their shop where they featured materials and
lessons for every popular craft. Carl remembers that macramé and bead craft were
popular and resin casting had come into its own in the early 1970s.
“I worked fulltime as an electronic technician at a plant in Sharon and the craft
business was Ruth’s to run,” Carl says. “She was always one to listen to her
customers and one day, a customer talked her into going to a seminar in Cleveland
to learn about Faberge Egg making. It was a day that changed our lives.”
He doesn’t remember the time frame, but within what seemed a short period of
time, he was hauling a 40-foot long semi-trailer truck of inventory out of their shop
that contained everything that didn’t relate to the ornate eggs. Ruth was ready to
pursue her passion and pass it on to others. Before she begins to demonstrate, she
makes sure her students understand the difference between Pysanki-style eggs and
her Faberge-style creations.
“Pysanki is painting designs on eggs,” Ruth says. “Faberge was a Russian artist
who decorated egg shapes made of precious metals with silk fabric, beautiful braids
and precious gems. These were called the Imperial Faberge eggs.

Ruth uses the eggs of finch, quail,
duck, emu, rhea and ostrich supplied
by hatcheries that may maintain
laying birds only for the eggs she
needs. She has mastered the art of
cutting, hinging and decorating eggs
that hold surprises as unique as any
the royal families may have enjoyed.
“Tools Carl designed make it
possible for me to work efficiently.
The brass hinges he designed and
manufactures here on the farm are
better than any others on the market.
He’s also adapted dental tools and
a box with a dust collector makes it
possible to cut eggs without being exposed to the shell dust.”
She also praises his creativity and skill in wiring the bases she melds her eggs into.
“Our eggs reveal light under the crystal ice that supports the skaters and more than
light they move to the music and if there’s a train on a track, you’ll love to watch it
travel on a track with special effects built into the system.”
Ruth’s studio is in the shop and you will find her there most days focusing on one
step of the process or another. And this is no small space to devote to one craft –
9,000 square feet at the present time with 2300 square feet devoted to show rooms
and class space.
“Now that Carl is retired, we made the decision to apply at Shaker Woods. Years
ago, I helped a friend who sold her work there and I know that people who come to
the Woods appreciate fine historic art forms.”
To achieve the quality Ruth demands of herself, she spends an average of thirty
to forty hours on each egg and many more hours on more elaborate designs. In
addition to eggs on gold-plated stands, she makes many eggs with hangers suitable
for decorating holiday trees.
Visitors to Shaker Woods this summer will see a wide array of intricate things Ruth
has done with her real eggshells. One of her favorite scenes is a tiny ballerina twirling
on a lighted stage to the music of a Russian ballet. Kits will also be available for those
who want to complete their own ready-to-decorate eggs.

arryl grew up in Beaver Falls, PA where he began singing with his brother
Don at an early age. The duo went on to great success in Nashville,
recording two albums with Sony/Epic Records and were nominated for
Country Music Duo of the Year for five consecutive years. They performed on
the Grand Ole Opry eleven times and performed with such legends as Merle
Haggard, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Alabama, the Mandrells and many
more. They even managed to score a Billboard Top 40 hit with their single ‘No
Sir’ and have three videos in the TNN Hall of Fame. Darryl has been a singer/
songwriter/entertainer his whole life, focusing on his live shows the past ten
years and mesmerizes every crowd.
Andrea grew up in Marion, OH and earned a Bachelor of Music degree
from Ashland University where she majored in music education with a vocal
emphasis. Her voice has taken her to stages across the country and even
overseas to England with her ability to sing six languages and all styles

recorder players, producing more than 40 CDs and selling over 1,000,000 copies.
His music has been played on hundreds of radio stations around the world,

David’s performances are visually and musically stimulating to any audience.

“I liked the challenge of bringing the wood to life
with my designs and for years my inventory was
driven by what people suggested they’d like.”
After eighteen years on the home party circuit,
Lori decided to sell exclusively through the many
large craft festivals in West Virginia, Ohio and
Pennsylvania.
In addition to decorator woodcraft, Lori makes
many useful items, some of them decorated with
seasonal paintings. Her most popular household
item is a rectangular box that she makes in many
sizes.
“I’ll bring all sizes of boxes to Shaker Woods and
some will have pumpkins or fall leaves painted on
them,” the artist says. “My husband, Doyle, finds
really unique wood branches that he adds for
handles. You can use these boxes for all kinds of
things, but I like them as plant holders. They can sit
outside for years without losing their good looks.”
She applies five coats of finish over the design
and insists on painting the backs and underside of
everything so it can be viewed on all sides.
For the person who loves miniatures, Lori cuts
out tiny standup figures people use for party
favors or small special occasion mementos. The
demand for nurse figures far outdistances requests
for any other vocational figures. She prices these
miniatures between $3 and $5. Larger items range
in price up to $100 with many items in the $25 to
$50 range.

enhartsville, PA - Some would say Mark Hamm
has come up in the world. His love affair with wood
began in the basement of his father’s home where his
interest blossomed into a passion for making split oak
baskets. In mid life, after earning a college degree and
pursuing several careers, he’s come up in the world of
wood to a full-scale woodshop on the second floor of his
Cape Cod style house in Lenhartsville, Pennsylvania.
“You have to love what you do to exchange a five-day
work week with a paycheck to a seven-day 24/7 career
with possibilities,” Mark says.

While we talk, he e-mails a picture of the room with
a view where he’s surrounded by neat piles of wood
in various stages of preparation to become wooden
utensils that are both beautiful and functional. Patterns
for the majority of his spoons, forks, salad servers and
more than 90-utensils form a decorative border near the
ceiling of two walls. Their beautiful lines might have been
stenciled there as part of the décor.

lue Shades is a south-central Pennsylvania bluegrass music band, formed
in the summer of 2001. This four-piece group performs a wide variety of
bluegrass music ranging from the high lonesome sound of traditional music, to
the most modern songs of todays more progressive bluegrass sound, as well as
prominently featuring the ever popular Bluegrass Gospel music. Whatever the style,
they play it bluegrass. Comprised of four veteran bluegrass performers, with nearly
100 years of combined music experience, this band can play any venue. From a

Made Windsor Chairs
J
efferson, Ohio _ About one hour north of Shaker
Woods, Joseph Graham makes a style of chair that
first appeared in the British Isles in the 17th century.
Legend has it that King George I was out riding his horse
when a sudden rainstorm drove him to take shelter in a
wheelwright’s home. There he was offered a chair by the
fire to sit and dry out before returning home. The chair
was not only beautiful to look upon, but the king found
comfort in the scooped wooden seat. By the time he
headed back to Windsor castle, he had ordered chairs
and given them the distinctive name they carry today
“The first time I saw a Windsor chair, I was drawn to
the delicate curved legs and the elegant spindled back,”
the local builder says. “I was curious about its history and
found a builder whose workshop I attended. I fell in love
at first sight with the process and within 18-months, I was
making chairs people wanted to buy.”
He had planned to be an architect, but his fascination
with the chairs quickly became his way of life. At first
he was able to buy the logs he needed from three local
sawmills, but they were small and when they closed, he
sought help from the Amish.
“You see, the strength of a Windsor, in it’s many
variations, depends on the core strength of the logs we
strip to form the frame. These core logs are from what
they call the butt end -- the part of the log from the ground
to the first branch because we need knot-free boards.”
Joseph loves the labor of splitting the logs with
sledgehammer and wedge as well as using specialized
hand tools like the “froe,” a more precise splitting tool. After
the logs are prepared in
strips of various widths,
he stores them in a drying
barn until they’re ready
for steam bending over
many different shaped
forms.
“I use almost all white
oak for these frames
because it’s dense and
strong. The long fibers
are supple and split and
bend well. It’s because of
these long fibers within
the trunk that I split the
logs following the fiber
lines without damaging them. Most of the work is done on
the green wood and once the parts are clamped on forms,
the wood must dry up to six months.”
The seats can be made of many kinds of wood. Joseph
prefers cherry, walnut, curly maple and several exotic
woods. He dyes the frames to match the natural color
of the wood or in some instances, he chooses to use
contrasting stain colors.
While Joseph spent his children’s growing up years in
the woodshop, his wife, Peggy, focused on rearing their
six children – three boys and three girls. Their youngest,
Charley, who is in his early thirties, has been the only one
of their children who has had a lasting interesting in making
chairs. Sometimes he helps with shows, but his goal is to
open a restaurant serving healthy foods. His wife, Lauren,
grows organic vegetables.
“Our other children are scattered all over the world
in successful careers,” Joseph says. “Now that we are
empty-nesters, Peggy gets more involved in our business.
Outside of the few big festivals where we sell our furniture,
she cooks wonderful meals for the people who come to
our farm and stay for a week while they learn to make
chairs. It’s like a wonderful retreat week and each one
completes a chair.”
Although he spends much time alone in his shop, the
training weeks he offers are highlights for both he and his
wife.
“We’ve hosted many family groups. I only can take six in
a class and one class is memorable for including a father
and three sons. Sixteen accompanied by a parent is as
young as I can take a teenager because they have to have
adequate strength in the upper body. Making Windsor
chairs is a workout, but a great break from a stressful 9 to
5 desk job. We have quite a few who come back time and
again for the pleasure of it.”
He says he will have many rocking chairs at Shaker
Woods because these have been much in demand. His
display will also include a wide variety of Windsor chair
styles. In addition to living room chairs, he will have sets
of dining room chairs. Prices range from $1200 to $3500.

A
t 18 years old Vanessa Campagna is already a
seasoned professional. She’s been warming up
crowds for industry icons such as Reba, Wynona, and
Loretta since she was 8 years old. It is her commanding
presence and explosive stage personality along with
her dynamic and versatile voice that has made her a
fan favorite and has catapulted her to national attention.
These traits along with her passion to perform have earned
her the opportunity to work with some of the best music
entertainment people in the business as well as major
venues across the country including the Superbowl of
Country Music, “Jamboree in the Hills”, in Belmont, Ohio.
She was only six when she sang her first National Anthem
in front of more than 35,000 people for the Pittsburgh Pirates
and only 10 years old when she got her first TV appearance
when she was chosen out of 24,000 youngsters to appear
on CBS’ Star Search.
Since then, she has performed with some of the greatest
artists in the music industry such as Sugarland, Trace
Adkins, Blake Shelton, Allan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn,
Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Kelly Pickler, Tricia Yearwood,

Bob Corbin, famous for his many hits with Kenny Rogers,
Alabama and the Oakridge Boys. Bob and Vanessa went

Every inch of the 800 square foot room with a view of
his wife Collene’s English style garden has been put into
service as storage and work space.
Beyond the garden, a split rail fence covered with
plastic coated dog wire encloses the acre and a half
lawn where they exercise the Keeschond puppies they
raise to show and sell.
“My typical schedule is preparing supplies on Monday
for the work I’ll complete Tuesday through Friday. In
addition to arranging stacks of American black cherry
wood in the work area, I draw the utensil patterns on
two-inch boards and stack the boards in bins ready for
rough cutting on the bandsaw.”
He uses the band-saw for cutting the primary shape,
but most of the real shaping takes place at the drum
sander.
“I built the sander myself and I load it with course 100grit sandpaper for the first round of shaping. I guide this
by hand very carefully because with full pressure, I could
grind the whole thing to dust and my fingers as well.”
He doesn’t wear gloves because he needs to feel the
design springing to life beneath his fingers.
“The wood flies off and when I’m satisfied with the
shaping, I change to a fine sandpaper to perfect the
shape and smoothness I want.”
He believes the joy he feels in making heirloom-quality
utensils, cutting boards, and other wooden implements,
springs from the bond he feels with nature and history.
“My ancestors came to this country in the mid-1700s
and made their living by farming and woodworking. It’s
a thrill to me to be doing the same things they did and
know that what I do has the potential to meet the needs
of generations into the future.“

n May 2005, five veteran musicians who shared a common vision of combining many types of
music with the unique style of each group member formed the Hot Pursuit Band. The result is a

orwalk, Ohio - You may have
heard stories about the farmer’s
daughter or the coalminer’s daughter.
But Desiree Gilbert has attained status
as a woodworker’s daughter.
“My dad drew me into woodcraft
step-by-step,” Desiree says. “As a
preschooler, I’d hang out in the shop
doing little tasks from sweeping sawdust
to stacking blocks of wood before I
graduated to drawing and painting on
wood.”
Although her husband, Tom, was an
art major in college, he worked for Ford
Motor Company in Lorraine, Ohio, rather
than pursue a career in the arts. When
the plant closed, he decided to turn
his woodworking hobby into a fulltime
vocation.
“Our mutual interests make us as
perfect a fit as a work team as the pieces
of the puzzle boxes he specializes in
making.”
The first time you see their puzzle
box display, you might assume you are
looking at a variety of handsome onepiece wooden decorations. You may
start to imagine where you’d place
such a piece to show it off. If you collect
butterflies, you’ll find butterflies. Enjoy
music? Consider a jazzy-looking guitar
to set on your fireplace hearth. Want to
say ‘I love you’ to some special person? A triple heart will speak volumes.
But what you see at a glance is barely
the beginning. Run your finger down the
side of a heart and remove an almost
invisible pin to open the first of many
doors, drawers and sliding panels inside.
Whether the flower, fish or frog is 3 by
3 inches or 8 inches tall by 18 inches
wide, you will work your way through an
elaborate puzzle inside the box. Take
out one little drawer and reveal another
hidden one in a quest for the most secret
compartment, a place to hide treasured
rings, bracelets or coins.
“Tom sketches out the inner puzzle in
the way a jigsaw maker might draw his
parameters,” Desiree says. “Some he
does freehand and he’s also designed
templates he can reuse. Some may have
similar dimensions, but no two are alike
because nature varies and he will be
working with a variety
of beautiful woods.”
She adds that finding
the unique wood they
use is just as much fun
as building the boxes.
Their field trips may
begin near their Ohio
home, but spending
a couple days circling
the surrounding states
often brings them to
their favorite suppliers
in the state of Kentucky.
“Tom doesn’t like to buy from a catalog. He
wants to see the wood. The boxes all have a
solid black walnut base, but the accent on top
may be burled maple or buckeye, manzanita,
curly oak or one of dozens of other exotic
woods. Some of the quality lumberyards import
wood from all over the world.”
Tom is always looking for new ways to open
the puzzle boxes and in the case of his teardrop
boxes, he’s used a simple lift off lid. The teardrop
box is 18-inches tall and two feet wide with five doors shaped like tear drops.
“I find them irresistible,” Desiree says.
Boxes are priced from $20 to $2300. An average price is in the range between $100
and $200.

he “Free Spirit Cloggers,” from northeast Ohio and under the direction of
Jean Baird, clog to a variety of music, including traditional clogging music,
country and pop. There are 33 dancers on the show team that range in age from 8
years old to retired folks! They perform at fairs, festivals and many special events
throughout the state of Ohio, such as the Geauga Lake Oktoberfest and Kings
Island Theme Park. Come on out and see them at Christmas in the Woods, and
maybe you’ll get the urge to “learn to clog.” It’s great exercise, and lots of fun too!

If you prefer the homey quality of a backyard barnyard,
consider pigs and chickens on the edge of a pumpkin
patch flanked by short red mushrooms with polka-dotted
tops or the natural brown color of tall pointy mushrooms
in a bed of salvia and delphinium surrounding a deck.
Stake out a bluebird house by the railing. Plant a few
geraniums in gourd pots to create a mobile deck
arrangement.
“Every year I add new items to my array of collectible
gourds,” Mary says.
You have to see the variety of shapes and sizes to
believe what Mary does with nature’s bounty.

“I probably use 10,000 gourds and I’m proud to say everything we use is locally
produced. We have a 30-acre farm and do some growing, but we commission Amish
farmers from Pennsylvania and Ohio to grow most of what we need. We provide the
seed and get the gourds back ready to palette dry them.”
It takes about nine months for gourds to fully dry out depending on their size. During
the drying cycle the moist interior creates a perfect environment for mildew and many
home growers throw out their gourds when they see the mold forming on the outside.
“Mildew isn’t a problem. When the gourd is fully dried, I submerge them in warm
water. You don’t even have to add soap although I might sometimes. Let them soak
awhile and then scrub the mold off with a metal scrubby. You’ll find a beautiful smooth
surface underneath. Give them a short re-drying time and you’re ready to let the shape
guide what you make of it.”
Mary’s gourd ladles and pitchers are safe to hold drinking water and her birdhouses,
which she paints to resemble cottages, have a back door for easy cleaning.
“I taught our five children to be involved in gourd craft but none of them have followed
us into this farming vocation. The two youngest boys are finished college now and
have worked with us on the shows we do.”
This year, Mary will teach a children’s class in giraffe making at the Shaker Woods
Festival.
“When the children complete their giraffe, I invite them to come into our booth and
see the display. We get a lot of ‘ohs’ and ‘aws’ and ‘wows’ when they see all the
animals.”
In addition to animals and household implements, Mary will have an assortment of
fall decorations including costumed scarecrows with gourd heads.
