•• Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois Annual Report 2011–2012
•• Message from Our
Executive Director
Welcome to our first ever BHGH of Illinois
Annual Report.
We are thrilled to offer this snapshot of the past
year to you, our financial partners, who make
our work possible. It is fitting that you receive
a report on your investment in the BHGH of
Illinois Scholars.
The Taproot Foundation has worked with us
over the last six months on everything from design and layout to the pictures on
the page. They have created a template that we can update or modify for future
reports. Everyone here at BHGH of Illinois is extremely grateful for their insight
and guidance.
As you page through this report you’ll learn what a typical week is like for our
Scholars and appreciate the long term impact the BHGH of Illinois program has
on their lives. The opportunities you provide are fantastic and worlds apart from
Our mission is to help academically capable and
motivated children who are in-need and at-risk to
meet their full potential by providing value-centered,
family-like homes, opportunities and quality
education through college.
what they have in their neighborhoods. Our promise to you is that we will
continue to help deserving young men and women make the best use of their
abilities. Along with our educational partners, Loyola Academy, Regina Dominican High School and Saint Athanasius Parish School, we will ensure that our
Scholars persist through college and realize the ‘Hope’ assured in our name.
And lastly, my personal thanks to the Scholars, staff, mentors, house parents,
grantors, volunteers and donors for making this a truly remarkable year.
Please enjoy reliving the past year with us!
Peter Beale-DelVecchio, Executive Director

•• Boys Hope Girls Hope Success
Sit down with the Scholars of Boys Hope Girls Hope and ask them to
describe the program in one word and their answers probably won’t surprise
you: opportunity, friendship, sisterhood...
Ask them how their lives have changed as a result of the program and the
responses are thoughtful and slow in coming, but usually begin with “Wow!”
The Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholars struggle with profound challenges
during their high school years: living away from their families, making
new friends, mastering new subjects, exploring their limits as well as their
potential, and most importantly, learning what it means to be an adult.
But unlike many young people, and certainly more so than their peers who grow
up in some of the Chicago area’s poorest and most crime-ridden neighborhoods,
the Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholars have the benefit of perspective.
These young people know too personally what it means to live in low income
and frequently dangerous neighborhoods. Through Boys Hope Girls Hope, they
also know the joy of learning in a safe environment with the support they need
to pursue their dreams.
Contributions to Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois do more than pay for
the housing, tuition, counseling, tutoring, food, clothing, medical care and
supervision of our residential Scholars or the financial assistance provided to
our collegians.
Your donations make the Boys Hope Girls Hope mission a reality.
Thanks to your support, students with scholastic aptitude and determination
can achieve their potential despite the financial, family or neighborhood
circumstances that would derail their dreams.
By providing safe and structured home-like environments for our residential
Scholars, Boys Hope Girls Hope helps these young people focus on their
education, free from influences beyond their control.
What makes our mission unique is our long term commitment to helping
individual Scholars learn, grow and meet their futures with hope and confidence.
We count upon your generosity to help these young Scholars reach their goals,
and in so doing help their families and provide examples of attainable success
for their peers and communities.
Please take a few minutes and read about the tremendous impact your
donations have had upon just a few of the lives touched by Boys Hope
Girls Hope of Illinois.

•• Scholar Success Over A Typical Week, 2011
MarcAnthony, Scholar
MarcAnthony’s path to BHGH of Illinois began with the prompting of teachers
and mentors. He has made the most of his time at Loyola Academy where
he is known for his leadership, initiative and school pride. His interests include
music, boxing and bowling. MarcAnthony would love to pursue a career in
music or writing.
SUNDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MarcAnthony returns to the boys’ house after spending the weekend with his
family. There’s just enough time left before bed to finish schoolwork, unwind
with some video games and pack tomorrow’s lunch.
MONDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . After breakfast, he takes a CTA train and bus to get to school by 7:45 a.m.
As a senior, one class period is devoted to planning and preparing for
college. He applied to 11 schools and has been accepted to several.
House chores this week include setting the dinner table and cleaning up
leftovers.
TUESDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . On Tuesdays and Thursdays, MarcAnthony works at Loyola – today he delivers
paper supplies to the English and Art departments.
After school, he heads to a local community center to tutor 2nd graders.
WEDNESDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Choir class and rehearsal for the men’s a cappella group. A tenor,
MarcAnthony has been a choir member since junior year.
Daily study session from 7–9 p.m. Since freshmen year, the high expectations of his teachers, house parents and the other Scholars helped foster
strong study habits that he knows aided his academic success.
THURSDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Another day of school, work and volunteering. He also finds time to write
song lyrics and rap rhymes and attend a Torch Club meeting. Torch Club only
accepts students who demonstrate leadership, initiative and school pride.
Before bed, MarcAnthony calls home to check in and keep tabs on his
younger brothers. Tonight he asks permission to go to University of
Wisconsin-Madison for a weekend visit with friend and BHGH of Illinois
collegian Trederick Dean.
“Without Boys Hope Girls Hope I would not be as open to
growth, and I wouldn’t be who I am today.” •• MarcAnthony
FRIDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . His African-American Authors class has just finished reading “Kindred,” by
Octavia Butler. The homework assignment is to write a short story inspired
by the novel. His story involves a slave owner from the antebellum South
who time-travels to the present day.
MarcAnthony visits the Sunrise Senior Living Community to play dominos
with the residents.
Dinner tonight is MarcAnthony’s favorite, pasta with alfredo sauce.
•• 4
SATURDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . MarcAnthony is up early to pack for his trip to Madison after getting
approval from his mom and his house parents.
Before catching the bus, he finishes a math assignment, works on his short
story and enjoys a quick round of video games.
At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he and Trederick attend a free
concert and make plans for the future.

•• Scholar Success Over 4 School Years, 2008-2012
Michallé, Scholar
Michallé came to the BHGH of Illinois program from KIPP Ascend Charter
School and would like to return there one day as an elementary school teacher.
Her high school years have been busy with extracurricular activities like dance
and lacrosse. At Regina Dominican High School, Michallé discovered another
talent and passion, writing.
Spring 2008 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michallé is accepted into BHGH of Illinois and moves into the girls’ house in
June. She was introduced to BHGH of Illinois by her teachers at Kipp Ascend
Charter School in Chicago.
Summer 2008 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michallé participates in the Northwestern University’s Center for Talent
Development program. For her Java programming final, Michallé wrote
and developed a computer game she called “Reverse Pacman.” She
maintains a Facebook friendship with her roommate from the program
who lives in India.
“It’s learning how to manage time, become independent,
finding who you are, bettering your education, becoming
a better person in general.” •• Michallé
Fall 2008 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . She begins classes at Regina Dominican High School and qualifies for
inclusion in “B Honors.” She maintains her “B Honors” status throughout
high-school. Michallé joins the poms team and takes up lacrosse.
2009 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michallé’s grandmother passes away after a long struggle with cancer.
Michallé’s house parents, school friends and fellow Scholars provide emotional support during this difficult time. Her Am-Lit teacher encourages her
to take an honors class in journalism and she begins writing for the school
newspaper. She interns over the summer at a web site design company.
2009-2010 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michallé continues playing lacrosse and earns a spot on the varsity poms
team. She takes her first dance class at Regina.
2010-2011 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . After budget cuts force cancellation of the poms program, Michallé worked
with school advisors to create Regina’s Hip Hop Dance Club. She discovers a
love of writing in her favorite class, Journalism I.
2011-2012 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michallé works as a camp counselor at The Robert Crown Center in
Evanston. She attends the national meeting of BHGH Scholars and collegians
in Nebraska.
Following a seminar at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism,
she writes the editorial for the year’s first issue of Crown, the student
newspaper. Her article sparked a school-wide conversation about how
to show respect for fellow students and school property. She becomes
Editor-in-Chief of Crown.
Michallé auditions and is accepted into Orchesis, the school dance
company. She is named Co-President of the Regina Dominican Athletic
Association.
Michallé was named a Golden Apple Scholar in Illinois and will likely attend
Marquette University and study elementary education and journalism.

his big brother at The Mercy Big Brother program. He attended a picnic along
Lake Michigan where he met BHGH of Illinois Scholars for the first time and
took a tour of the house. He remembers being filled with anxiety before starting
the program, but Loyola Academy was a great experience and entering BHGH
of Illinois proved to be the right decision for him.
1998 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Grant attended summer camp and worked a summer job as a caddy at
Westmoreland Country Club. He rode his bike to work and remembers waiting nearly 4 weeks to get his first caddy assignment where he earned $40.
“The follow-through BHGH of Illinois provides is essential
and holistic. It would have been impossible for me to be at
home during high school.” •• Grant
