•• Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois Annual Report 2011–2012
•• Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois Annual Report 2011–2012 •• Message from Our Executive Director Welcome to our first ever BHGH of Illinois Annual Report. We are thrilled to offer this snapshot of the past year to you, our financial partners, who make our work possible. It is fitting that you receive a report on your investment in the BHGH of Illinois Scholars. The Taproot Foundation has worked with us over the last six months on everything from design and layout to the pictures on the page. They have created a template that we can update or modify for future reports. Everyone here at BHGH of Illinois is extremely grateful for their insight and guidance. As you page through this report you’ll learn what a typical week is like for our Scholars and appreciate the long term impact the BHGH of Illinois program has on their lives. The opportunities you provide are fantastic and worlds apart from Our mission is to help academically capable and motivated children who are in-need and at-risk to meet their full potential by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and quality education through college. what they have in their neighborhoods. Our promise to you is that we will continue to help deserving young men and women make the best use of their abilities. Along with our educational partners, Loyola Academy, Regina Dominican High School and Saint Athanasius Parish School, we will ensure that our Scholars persist through college and realize the ‘Hope’ assured in our name. And lastly, my personal thanks to the Scholars, staff, mentors, house parents, grantors, volunteers and donors for making this a truly remarkable year. Please enjoy reliving the past year with us! Peter Beale-DelVecchio, Executive Director •• 2 •• Boys Hope Girls Hope Success Sit down with the Scholars of Boys Hope Girls Hope and ask them to describe the program in one word and their answers probably won’t surprise you: opportunity, friendship, sisterhood... Ask them how their lives have changed as a result of the program and the responses are thoughtful and slow in coming, but usually begin with “Wow!” The Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholars struggle with profound challenges during their high school years: living away from their families, making new friends, mastering new subjects, exploring their limits as well as their potential, and most importantly, learning what it means to be an adult. But unlike many young people, and certainly more so than their peers who grow up in some of the Chicago area’s poorest and most crime-ridden neighborhoods, the Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholars have the benefit of perspective. These young people know too personally what it means to live in low income and frequently dangerous neighborhoods. Through Boys Hope Girls Hope, they also know the joy of learning in a safe environment with the support they need to pursue their dreams. Contributions to Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois do more than pay for the housing, tuition, counseling, tutoring, food, clothing, medical care and supervision of our residential Scholars or the financial assistance provided to our collegians. Your donations make the Boys Hope Girls Hope mission a reality. Thanks to your support, students with scholastic aptitude and determination can achieve their potential despite the financial, family or neighborhood circumstances that would derail their dreams. By providing safe and structured home-like environments for our residential Scholars, Boys Hope Girls Hope helps these young people focus on their education, free from influences beyond their control. What makes our mission unique is our long term commitment to helping individual Scholars learn, grow and meet their futures with hope and confidence. We count upon your generosity to help these young Scholars reach their goals, and in so doing help their families and provide examples of attainable success for their peers and communities. Please take a few minutes and read about the tremendous impact your donations have had upon just a few of the lives touched by Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois. 1979 . . . . . . . . . THURSDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Another day of school, work and volunteering. He also finds time to write song lyrics and rap rhymes and attend a Torch Club meeting. Torch Club only accepts students who demonstrate leadership, initiative and school pride. Before bed, MarcAnthony calls home to check in and keep tabs on his younger brothers. Tonight he asks permission to go to University of Wisconsin-Madison for a weekend visit with friend and BHGH of Illinois collegian Trederick Dean. “Without Boys Hope Girls Hope I would not be as open to growth, and I wouldn’t be who I am today.” •• MarcAnthony FRIDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . His African-American Authors class has just finished reading “Kindred,” by Octavia Butler. The homework assignment is to write a short story inspired by the novel. His story involves a slave owner from the antebellum South who time-travels to the present day. MarcAnthony visits the Sunrise Senior Living Community to play dominos with the residents. Dinner tonight is MarcAnthony’s favorite, pasta with alfredo sauce. •• 4 SATURDAY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
