PAWPRINT PRESS Our mo'o-‐ “Save one. Save two.” By adop:ng one shelter animal, you open up a cage for another animal to come in, be safe, and find a home. ABOUT THE PAWPRINT PRESS !
The PawPrint Press is a quarterly newsle1er created by 2 local kids whose experience with the shelter inspired them to become adop;on advocates for the animals. It has been distributed for 4 years in their Eden Park neighborhood. It is our hope that every animal at the shelter be adopted into a forever home. Editors in chief-‐ Michaiah and Abigail Kojoian !
socialized with people. What about fleas and ;cks and the diseases they carry? Now, look at the shelter cats. For prac;cally the same price, your cat or ki1en will come spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and in the company of humans! In this world full of good, unwanted animals, why support such an industry? !
HOLIDAY HAZARDS* HALLOWEEN: ▪
Trick or treaters-‐ watch out! As you open your door to trick or treaters, your animal may sneak out. If at all possible, keep your pet in another room safe from the opening door. ▪
Candles-‐ “what’s that bright thing? Maybe I should find out.” If Fido does inves;gate that curious bright thing, he could burn himself. He may also knock the candle down causing a house fire. ▪
Xylitol-‐ very dangerous to your pet! Actually, any candy, gum, or chocolate should be kept far away from any animal. Chocolate can poison your pet, and even cause pancrea;c inflamma;on from the high fat content. THANKSGIVING: ▪
▪
Bones-‐turkey, chicken, and other small animal bones are Balloons quite different from the large ones sold at pet stores. They can splinter and cause internal damager to your pet if they are swallowed. Hot containers-‐“something smells good!” Again, this could result in burn. !
▪
CHRISTMAS: Holiday plants-‐ Christmas rose, Holly, Lilies, and mistletoe are all toxic to dogs and cats. ▪ Ribbons-‐it may look adorable, but placing a ribbon around your pet’s neck may cause him to choke. ▪
▪
▪
▪
Bubbling lights-‐older forms of this a1rac;ve decora;on may contain methylene chloride, which is a highly toxic chemical. Fire salts-‐contain chemicals that could be harmful to pets. Angel hair (spun glass) -‐ can be irrita;ng to eyes and skin, and could cause obstruc;on if eaten in large amounts. Christmas tree water-‐ stagnant tree water or water containing preserva;ves could result in stomach upset if ingested. !
▪
Decora;on hooks-‐can cause blockage and/or trauma to gastrointes;nal tract if swallowed. Styrofoam-‐ can cause your ▪
pet to choke if swallowed. Ornaments-‐ these look like toys to cats and dogs, but are very dangerous if broken or swallowed. Tinsel-‐can cause choking or internal !
trauma if swallowed. NEW YEAR’S: Balloons and confel-‐ these fun New Year’s party decora;ons can cause your pets to choke or obstruct their intes;nes if ingested. Keep an eye on your pets when they’re around these items or move them to an undecorated area. Loud noises-‐ New Year’s is typically a noisy holiday. Unfortunately, loud noises frighten pets and could cause them to run off. Keep pets in a separate room, away from noisemakers music, and other loud noises that may startle them. !
VALENTINE’S DAY: Flowers and candy-‐ many types of flowers and plants found in bouquets are harmful to dogs and cats if they are ingested. Chocolate can cause vomi;ng, diarrhea, hyper ac;vity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures, and, in severe cases, chocolate can be fatal. !
EASTER: fake grass-‐this colorful grass may look appealing to pets, but it could cause them to choke or obstruct their intes;nes if ingested. Small toys and other plas;c items-‐ watch your pets to make sure they do not swallow these toys. !
4TH OF JULY: fireworks-‐ can scare your pets and make them run off. They can also cause serious injury if detonated near them. Many formulas are also toxic if ingested. *copied from the ASPCA’s “101 things you didn’t know could harm your pet” holiday hazards sec;on. HELPFUL HINTS AN ODOR FREE LITTER BOX-‐ 1. Clean the litter box as soon as you see it has been used. 2. Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom to eliminate odors. 3. If you’re really ambitious, empty all the contents of the box and rinse it out weekly or bi-‐ weekly. If you are not as ambitious about cleaning, try disposable litter box liners which can be changed as often as desired. 4. Keep the scooper clean 5. Consider placing the litter box on a rubber mat. The mat is easily shaken out or swept. 6. Keep a dust-‐pan and brush near the litter box. This way, litter that is knocked out can neatly be swept up. !
ASK MOOSE* Moose is the resident cat at the CAS. He was found abandoned in a cat carrier on the side of a road. He is now the resident cat, and helps to run the shelter by welcoming visitors. ❖ Q: has an animal ever saved a human? !
❖ A: yes. Here are just a few things animals have done. Scooter, a 2-‐year-‐ old German shepherd, showed her bravery by pulling her owner out of the freezing water of a river on their farm. Fred Priest was showing his new dog around the property when he fell through the ice. Scooter dug her claws into the ice !
!
and held fast while Fred used the dog’s leash to drag himself out of the water. !
Baby was a deaf li1le cat who had no voice. That didn’t make any difference to the Beriault family. They took her in and loved her. Late one winter night, Baby somehow knew that Mr. Beriault was ill. Since she couldn’t meow, she jumped up and down on Mrs. Beriault un;l she woke up. Mrs. Berisault rushed her husband to the hospital in ;me to save him from his almost-‐ fatal heart a1ack. YOU TOO CAN BE A HERO, ADOPT AN ANIMAL FROM THE SHELTER. *stories copied from “ The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids” chapter pets. !

Ari I am a 5 year old grey and white cat who longs for a home. CAS doesn’t know my history, because I was a stray but I have one. If you adopt me, I will have a future. Will you give me that chance? !
!
!
Snow As you can tell by name I am a white cat (Domes;c Long Hair). What you can’t tell is that I was abandoned. The editors of the Pawprint Press thought I would be adopted soon because of my beau;ful white coat. I’m s;ll wai;ng. Would you end my wait? !
!
Torch Torch, as you can tell, looks like a light. He is cream with yellow stripes on his face, and is a domes;c medium hair. He is friendly. Could you be his light? !
Lucy !
Lucy is an orange 2 year old female tabby. She arrived a stray from Franklin Ave. She is a mother and wants to be loved. Will you love her? !

Brat Brat is not a brat. She is actually described as being a very mellow cat. As you can see, she likes playing, but also sits quietly in her cage. Does she look like a brat to you? Maybe you should take a ride to the CAS and find out. !
!
Sady Sady is a 4 year old short haired calico. She is already spayed, mellow, and sweet. She has been at the CAS for over 6 months. She just sits quietly in her cage and would sit quietly with you too. She’s been the cat of the month in PeRinder.com, but s;ll is in need of a home. Please let her sit with you. !
Georgia Georgia is a 4 year female cat (already spayed) she is a short haired brown and white ;ger who is very fat. If brought home, she would probably lose some weight by being able to exercise daily. Despite her name, she would be perfectly happy with living in Rhode Island. Would anyone in RI have a home for me? Henry Henry is a 4 year old cat that has been at the shelter for a year! He is a Buff Domes;c Long Hair, and looks like a li1le lion. He is very affec;onate arer he knows you. Will you let him show you his affec;on? !
Jack Jack was also there when we took pictures of the animals last ;me. He is a black and white handsome li1le boy with four white paws a white chest, chin, and whiskers. He is the first to let you know if he’s not gelng enough a1en;on and meows through his li1le black nose. Will you give him the a1en;on he needs? !
Baby I am a 5 year old black Pug mix. I am good with cats and dogs, but I am not good with li1le children. I lunge at my cage gate when anyone walks into the dog room, longing for a1en;on. Would you take me home? !
!
Nameless This 5year old Yorkshire terrier was found a stray on Jordan Avenue. He is black and tan, and is very sweet. Will you snuggle with him if you adopt him? !
Nameless Have you heard my story? I was ;ed to a tree in the woods with a pinch collar and a strong. The CAS rescued me, but I want to be rescued one more ;me. I want a home. !
Will it be yours? !

Would you take me for a walk? !
Jeo Although I have floppy ears, my ears are always pricked up. I am very alert and aware of my surroundings and hope you will be aware of me too. Will you? !
!
Nameless I stand at the edge of my cage hoping someone will no;ce me despite my small size. Will you no;ce me? !
Nameless I am s;ll wai;ng since last ;me. I s;ll sit quietly in my cage wai;ng for a home. I do love games and walks, even though I’m quiet. Could you take me home? !
