St. John the Baptist leapt in the womb as he encountered Jesus for the first time. Each time we go to Reconciliation
we have an intimate encounter with our Lord, one in which we should leap for joy as we experience God’s mercy
and love. Action: Mary and Elizabeth greeted one another with a hug and kiss. In reconciliation we receive that
ultimate hug from God. Share God’s hug with others.

We, the leaders of the Jewish community in Calgary and the Catholic Diocese of
Calgary, together with our people, do covenant and promise:
To celebrate, dialogue, pray and join in working for the benefit of Creation through the recognition in our
respective traditions of the Divine Image implanted within every human being and of the unity that reveals
the loving and redemptive presence of the One God. As Jews, we acknowledge that Christianity bears a
message of wisdom and truth that merits respect as it leads its adherents toward a path of righteousness,
justice and hope for a messianic future. As Christians, we acknowledge that the Jewish people possess
“the sonship and the glory and the covenants and the law and the worship and the promises” (Rom. 9:4-5, NA
4).
We together deplore the moral actions of any person or group who hurtfully discriminates any
person or group because of religion or creed according to the rights of all persons “made in the image” of God
(Gen. 1:27). With the common ancestry of Adam and Eve, the first humans created in the Garden of Eden, we
promise to defend the other if any of us is discriminated against or harassed for the reason of belief or
practice (NA 5, Mic. 6:8).
We do apologize, as far as it is in our power, for all the actions of our communities, leading to, or against
the freedom and dignity of the human person. We promise to journey, with God as our guide, toward
greater understanding and collaboration in enhancing the quality of life for all who live in Southern
Alberta, and urge our all followers of/in Christ, and the Jewish People around the world to do this as well.
We affirm our current friendship as Christians and Jews, and implore and trust God to be with us, and to lift
up to God the prayer of the righteous Job: “As for me, I would seek God, and to God I commit my cause,
who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number.” (Job 5:8-9)

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Catholic service with Bishop Henry will take place during
the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2016 on Thursday Jan. 21st, 2016 at 7:00-8:30pm at St.
Mary’s Cathedral, Calgary. Pray with other Christian leaders and Bishop Henry as we explore the
week’s theme that together Christians of all denominations are "Called to proclaim the mighty acts
of the Lord" (1 Pet. 2:9). Reception will follow.
CANADIAN CATHOLIC ORGANIZATION FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE
Save the Date: The Share Lent Workshop will be held on Saturday, January 23rd from 10 am to 3
pm at Corpus Christi Church, 404 Northmount Place NW, Calgary. We are continuing our ‘Create a
Climate of Change’ campaign into the season of reflection, prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We will
explore how to use the freely available materials to enhance our celebration of the season. More
